Digital jamming: creativity, collaboration and skill-building through easy en...Jisc
Presenter: Sara Perry, director of studies, digital heritage, University of York.
This interactive session offers an introduction to the application of a variety of simple digital media technologies in building intellectual independence, critical thinking, professional networks and confidence amongst their users. Such technologies offer not only meaningful creative opportunities, but also mechanisms by which the very nature of academic and professional fields of practice can be prodded, extended and perhaps even fundamentally reconfigured.
Alongside considering their problematic implications (including their relationship to free labour, neoliberalism and personal security), I demonstrate here how they promise both to narrow the gap between theory and practice, and simultaneously empower emerging professionals.
Please bring your laptop, smartphone or tablet, and come ready to invent, experiment, discuss your experiences and share your questions and concerns about digital media in the educational environment.
Advances in computer technology continue to change the
lives of instructors and students. One of the exciting new ways
to use computers in education is in testing. According to Brown
(1997), computer-based tests (CBTs) have been used in second
language testing since the early 80's. This rapid change in mode
of administration of tests is very understandable. As Jamieson
(2005) states, computers have a number of very desirable
functions that considerably eases up the test creation and
assessment task, including item creation and presentation,
answer collection and scoring, statistical analysis, and storage,
transmission, and retrieval of information. Also the literature on
computer-assisted language learning indicates that language
learners have generally positive attitudes towards using
computers in the classroom (Reid, 1986; Neu and Scarcella,
1991; Phinney, 1991).
Computer-based assessment has been used in many
disciplines to give both formative feedback and to offer
summative testing. This is especially so in the sciences. There is
evidence to suggest that formative computer-based assessment
can produce improvement in student learning outcomes
(Clariana, 1993) and that this can lead to a positive attitudes of
students to learning.

Using Brightspace to Design and Develop Scholarly Activities: Successes and C...D2L
How do you motivate a student to participate in research and scholarly activities, when they have no motivation to learn the content in the first place? Tamara Ellen Carver from McGill University helps address this problem by going over the rationale for design and development of building a course, how to showcase it, and the challenges that come with it.
A walkthrough of the new features, services and functionality that make up the Brightspace Spring 2016 Release. Highlights include:

Please join the Community College Consortium for Open Educational Resources (CCCOER) for a free and open webinar on how OER is being used to design and offer low-cost competency-based certificates and degrees. Competency-based degrees can offer a shorter path to a degree because students advance as soon as they master the subject matter. Students work at their own pace and move as far and fast as their proven knowledge takes them. With competencies that are clearly aligned to career skills, graduates are more employable.
Washington community colleges launched their first competency based degree with an online business transfer degree that uses only open educational resources and no commercial textbooks. The program has been in pilot mode at single college since summer 2015 but will be expanding to 7 more colleges in Winter 2016. Students in this particular competency-based program are taught by highly qualified instructors and receive guidance from completion coaches.
Lord Fairfax Community College (LFCC) launched competency-based education this fall with their Knowledge to Work program. With approval from its accrediting agency, the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges, LFCC becomes the first institution in the region to offer 100% direct assessment, competency-based education. Direct assessment does not involve counting hours in the classroom. Instead, the focus shifts to documenting learning and the attainment of competencies using OER and low cost curriculum which makes college both more affordable and accelerated.
Learning Object is a company focused on competency-based and personalized learning environments.

Assessing Transformative Learning Beyond the ClassroomD2L
When the University of Central Oklahoma (UCO) was choosing a new LMS, they knew it needed to be easy to use—but also flexible enough to support their specific goals. With Brightspace, they’ve been able to develop a new way to track learning activities that happen outside the classroom. It’s called the Student Transformative Learning Record (STLR). Now, their students can share the non-academic learning experiences and skills they've gained with graduate schools and potential employers.

Community College Consortium for OER Panel: Increasing Student Retention and ...Una Daly
Presentation at the Online Teaching Conference Jun 18, 2015 in San Diego, CA:
The cost of textbooks has been identified as a major barrier for students completing their education. Colleges seeking to increase student retention and success are promoting the use of open educational resources and open textbooks to reduce costs and improve pedagogy. A key strategy for college adoption campaigns has been participating in communities of practice. Members of the Community College Consortium for OER (CCCOER) will share their best practices and other tactics for nurturing a national community of practice focused on open education.
Etienne Wenger defines communities of practice as “groups of people who share a concern or a passion for something they do and learn how to do it better as they interact regularly.” With over 250 member colleges in 19 states and provinces, CCCOER encourages collaboration between members and invites OER project presentations at monthly online meetings. Experienced members advise those who are just getting started on OER and best practices are freely shared. Access to a community of college OER experts through our advisory listserve allows new members to quickly find and adopt the highest quality OER available. Meetups at regional and national conferences provide an opportunity to share and promote the OER adoption successes of our members with colleagues in higher education.
Hear from this panel of OER experts about how they promote open textbooks and OER adoption at their colleges:
Una Daly, Director of CCCOER and Curriculum Design at the Open Education Consortium. Panel facilitator.
Katie Datko: Interim Associate Dean of Distance Education and Instructional Designer, Pasadena City College.
James Glapa-Grossklag, Dean of Educational Technology, Learning Resources, and Distance Learning, College of the Canyons, President of CCCOER Advisory

Cherylee Kushida: Distance Education Coordinator and Computer Science professor at Santa Ana College.

65. Faculty feedback
“The quality of my students this term is much higher than previous terms for an intro class with no
pre-reqs.”
“I didn't get any direct feedback from my students, however, I have found that I am having to
explain much less about using our online system (D2L), which is vital to retaining my GED
students.”
“Although I have not received any direct information regarding this from my students this term, they
appear to be more prepared to deal with the technology involved in the D2L class. Thank you for
instituting this training requirement!”
66. Student Feedback
“Great assessment of both subjective and objective opinion. Learned more about my learning
style.”
“Really super and lots of useful information. Thank you for that!”
“To long and some things way to esoteric for previously enrolled and graduated online students. I
got two masters degrees on line...this was a huge waste of time.”

As part of our prepare efforts, we are creating a pathway to support online students. We have been organizing resources and support materials to create an intentional flow so that students can make informed decisions about online learning and start their first online class ready to learn. The bulk of this presentation is to focus on the Start Guide, because it is a major change in how students will interact with online learning at PCC. However, it is only part of a larger picture of the online student experience.

After reviewing feedback, the team worked to tighten up the Academic Integrity section. Many students don’t learn meaningfully about academic integrity until there is subject-specific examples, so keeping the intro as high-level as possible is useful, and shaves off a couple minutes.
5% fewer F grades and 4% fewer withdrawals than previous spring for first time online students.
First time/Start Guide completers had a comperable pass rate to experienced online students.
