The poem depicts a first grade student who is punished by his teacher for not being able to read. The teacher throws the boy outside of the classroom. The boy stands alone, thinking of his grandmother in the hospital. He knows the letters make up stories but cannot read them himself. The punishment does not make the boy eager to learn and measures a student's skills too narrowly. A child's talents should be allowed to develop naturally rather than through imposition or punishment. Teachers should consider each student as an individual.
