To put out a fire we need to:
Smother itSmother it (stops it breathing)
Remove the fuelRemove the fuel (stops it from eating, starves it)
Reduce the heatReduce the heat (cools the fire)

Editor's Notes

  • #2 A fire needs three element to start. These are represented by three sides of a triangle. You don’t have to remember the triangle, just the three elements required. Because, if you can remember those three, you are all set for helping prevent a fire. See next slide
  • #3 The first thing a fire needs is… Oxygen, which is in the Air. So, no matter where you are, there is a good chance that one of the things required by a fire to BREATH is readily available. See next slide
  • #4 A fire also needs heat. This doesn’t mean that a fire can only happen when it’s warm – an electrical fault could create heat for example. Therefore, you will often see firemen spraying their water hoses onto a fire. This helps to take away the heat See next slide
  • #5 The last thing a fire needs is fuel. If you think of fuel as food, and you take away that food from the fire – it will starve. We have three things needed by a fire: Air Heat Fuel See next slide
  • #6 The fire BREATHES oxygen It EATS the fuel And the HEAT maintains its health. We need to SMOTHER the fire by excluding the oxygen (cover it with a blanket of foam for example) We need to STARVE the fire by removing its food source (fuel). This can be done by removing any combustible materials from the fire’s proximity. We need to COOL the fire. As we’ve seen before, this can be done by pouring water on it (in many cases, but not all) See next slide
  • #7 Either one of the methods detailed on the previous slide can help to put out a fire. However, extreme care must be taken when dealing with a fire and it is often best left to experts. Your role is to follow your institution’s Fire Safety Procedures (if you hear the alarm, leave the building immediately and join everyone else at the specified assembly point). Reminders of this should be posted in every room. If you have to tackle the fire yourself, be very careful – make sure you have understood all of the fire safety precautions and activites.
  • #8 Final slide. You have seen the three elements that are needed by a fire: Air/Oxygen Fuel Heat and you have seen some basic examples of these might be removed. You have studied the ‘fire triangle’ Take a look at the two internet addresses (URLs) for more information. http://www.splicd.com/K2Ml2GJJ9Dc/55/71 and http://youtu.be/K2Ml2GJJ9Dc Good luck
