Research task 2D-similarities
between all 3 parts.
By Baldeep Gahir.
Colour scheme:
The house colour/colour scheme is the same for all three parts of the magazine. They all include the
main colours of white, red and black. This is seen on the cover page, as the colour white is used for the
models shirt, the white tiles, the main coverline, the pull quote and the bold stroke on the masthead.
This colour is also used on the contents page. For example, the background of the right hand side
column, the contents title, the caption and the drop cap. And lastly the colour white is shown on the
double page spread as it is the background of the right hand side page.
In the same way the main colour, red is used for the masthead on the cover page, the writing for the
band index on the contents page, and the colour of the models jacket on the double page spread.
Lastly, the colour black is used on the cover by the strapline, the black tiles on the floor, the 3d effect on
the main cover line, the outline of the masthead, the black graffiti on the background, and on the top
where the list of music artists are mentioned I.e.: “Maximo park” and “Muse.”
The colour is also used on the contents page, for the block of colour on which the contents title and
masthead are placed, the drop cap, band index title and the background for the main image and
editorial letter. Finally, this main colour is also used on the double page spread, as it uses the black for
the colour of the graffiti, stereo, the main headline, by-line and last of all the drop cap.
The use of a colour scheme makes it easily recognizable for the target audience to identify the
magazine, and also to create style and an eye catching appearance.
Size of typography:
The size of the fonts for all three pages, are similar in the sense that if a feature for
example a caption is meant to stand out and catch the target audiences attention, the
typography will be in a large font. This is seen, as the cover page uses this technique
by applying it to the masthead, the main coverline and the pull quote. These are the
main features that are meant to stand out and therefore grab the readers attention.
In the same way, on the contents page a large font size is used for features such as the
contents title and masthead, the caption and the drop cap.Again, this is so that it is
the first thing that the target audience notices.
And lastly, for the double page spread the main headline and the drop cap are in a
large font.
Bold typography:
The technique of using bold typography is also effective in terms of grabbing the
target audiences attention. This is used in all three pages of the magazine. For
example, on the cover page, it is used on the top strapline regarding the “Autumn tour
special.” This is done deliberately as, the word “special” is a buzz word, and when the
target audience notices this “due to it being in a bold font) they are more likely to be
enticed to buy it and find out more.
In the same way on the contents page, the title of the band index and the article titles
are in a bold font.
And lastly, on the double page spread this technique is used with features such as the
name of the main model in the sub-headline “Dizzee Rascal” and the main headline
being in a bold lettering.
Rule of thirds/(grid):
The rule of thirds/a grid is applied to all three pages of the magazine. On the cover
page, every part of the cover has something included in it. For example, the main
image is central, as well as the main coverline, the top and bottom strapline are used,
and the bottom left hand pug includes a pull quote and the top left pug includes the
masthead.
For the contents, the grid of the page is sectioned so that the main image is central,
there are two columns on either side which inform the target audience about where
to find certain articles/names of bands, the contents title and masthead are together
and sectioned off at the top of the page. And lastly, the magazine subscription
advertisement is placed on the bottom right hand corner so that when the target
audience is reading the editorial letter, it catches their attention.(This is also due to
the colour of the “subscribe” title being yellow and bold.)
And lastly, the double page spread uses the rule of thirds/grid to its advantage, as
there are no dead spaces as the main hotspots are clearly visible such as the models
face, and the main headline.
Use of space:
For all three of the pages, the use of space is used in a similar way in terms of
there being no dead/blank space. This is seen on the contents page as there is
a lot going on In terms of what the target audience can see. For example, in
the corner/pug, the masthead is present and so is the pull quote. The main
image also takes up a lot of room. Also, any small parts of dead space are not
as visible, due to the colourful/chaotic background of the multi-coloured
graffiti.
Similarly, on the contents page features such as the contents title, editorial
letter, main image, columns, the masthead and contents title do not allow for
any dead space.
And lastly, for the double page spread the main two features that make sure
that there is not any dead space, is the main image and the main headline.
This is because they take up a lot of space on the page.
Main image:
Finally, all three pages include one main image. This is shown on the cover
page, as the main model “Dizzee Rascal” is shown, on the contents page, as
there is the main image of the girl standing next to the tour bus and finally on
the double page spread, “Dizzee Rascal” is shown again
