3. EXAMPLES OF A DOUBLE PAGE SPREAD

4. MAIN HEADLINE
The main headline is; as always
the largest text on the page. It is
the artist/ bands name usually.
On a double page spread the
main headline usually covers the
top of both two pages and is
always starts from the left hand
side. The headline is short and
snappy. This fits the genre of the
magazine and is in a ‘unique’
font. This writing is eye-catching
as it is large and bold.

5. MAIN IMAGE
On a double page spread there is only one main image across both pages
and it takes up the majority of one page as it is the main focus, however,
sometimes it can be over two pages, the middle or 2/3 of a page. The image
is surrounded by columns. Additionally, the shots are mainly close-up or
medium close-ups. Also, the biggest image ‘bleeds’ into the second image.
The artist is probably using direct address as well to try and connect with the
audience.

6. IMAGES
Apart from the main image, mon
a double page spread there are
other smaller images alongside
the large main image. Also, the
smaller images ‘bleed’ into each
other. These separate images
act as a border for both pages;
the border is plain. There are
also striking images of authors,
editors and journalists of the
magazine across the double
page.

7. TEXT
The text on a double page spread
is always in a small font, usually
size 11 and lots of writing over
the two pages. The mode of
address is quite informal as the
audience of certain music
magazine will be teenagers.

8. COLUMNS
The columns are included on
a double page spread to
break the information up into
sections. They are arranged
with 3-4 columns all together.
Furthermore, inside the
columns there are paragraphs
indented either by words in
different colours or by a few
spaces.

9. STAND ALONE / STAND FIRST
The stand first / alone is a
paragraph that outlines the article
and is a piece of information to
introduce what the magazine is
including; a summary. It is placed at
the top of the page just under the
main headline as is used to
introduce and to engage the
readers. Additionally, if you put the
artists name in the stand first, then
their name will be in a different
colour to the rest of the text.

10. DROP CAPITAL (CAP) / DROP QUOTE
A drop capital is an enlarged letter
at the beginning of the first word in
a sentence. It is situated at the start
of the article about 3-4 lines deep.
This can be in a different colour to
the rest of the sentences.
The drop quote is a quote said by the
artist/ band that is featured and is an
enlarged quote that is there to break up
text and this also gains the audiences
attention. This is usually the most
interesting thing said so it appeals to
the reader, also if it is the artist saying it
then there is no name given at the end,
however this is the opposite for a band.

11. BYLINES & GRAPHIC FEATURES
The bylines in an article are just
the names of whoever has written
or said anything. These are
included in case any of the
readers would like to research
some of the journalists etc.
Moreover, on a double page spread there
are also graphic features at the end of a
paragraphs. It is there to let the audience
know that it is the end of the paragraph
.However, if there is no graphic feature,
then the editors name will be in a small
font, in capital letters at the end of the
text.

12. COLOUR SCHEME
The colour scheme is usually
made up of 3-4 colours, no more
so they don’t clash. The colours
that are used are basic, such as
reds and whites. The colour
scheme is linked to the magazine’s
front cover and the genre of the
magazine. It also links to the
image and it might have a border
to frame it. The colour scheme
indicates the colours for the rest of
the magazine. Additionally, it
reinforces the house style and
genre of the magazine or the band
and colours.

13. DATE, WEB ADDRESS & PAGE NUMBERS
On a double page spread the date is
also included in the bottom right
hand corner. This is so the audience
knows when it was published and if it
is the most recent issue of the
magazine.
Next, the web address is used on the
double page spread for knowledge
purposes. For example: if a customer
wants to find out more information
about the magazine they can go to the
brands website and to reform the
brands identity.
Page numbers are also included at the
bottom of the page to indicate the
information on this certain page.

14. LAYOUT AND STRUCTURE
The structuring and layout of a double page spread is
beneficial for the whole magazine. This is the format of
the double page spread as the audience would like to
know more about the featured artist in the magazine.
Firstly, the date is always included in the bottom right
hand corner of the front cover, alongside the date,
page numbers and web address. Also, page numbers
are used to indicate what information is on what page
and is useful for the readers. The double page spread
always includes the main headline surrounded by the
drop cap and quote. The main image is the focus of the
double page and is surrounded by smaller images of
the featured artist. Next, usually on the right hand side
of both pages there is a graphic feature or the editors
name in a smaller font and a byline too. Also, the
colour scheme is important because it set the tone for
the rest of the magazine. Furthermore, the stand alone
is included as well. Columns are also used to break up
the text; which is in a small font and there is a lot of it
on the double page spread. There is also some
element of continuity in the structure.
