The document analyzes the contents pages of three music magazines: Kerrang!, Q, and NME. It examines the layout, use of text, images, representation of audiences, and how each addresses its target readership. The Kerrang! and Q contents pages use bold colors, graphics and large images to represent younger audiences. NME contains more text in a simpler layout with fewer images, potentially appealing more to older readers. In summary, the document evaluates how the design elements of different music magazine contents pages are tailored to their intended age demographics.
My magazine analysis for my A-Level Media Blog. I have analysed two Music magazines, Metal Hammer and Kerrang, I chose both of these magazines because my magazine will be focused on the same genre of music as these and both of the main articles were Slipknot.

2. Main Task: Contents Page Analysis
KERRANG!
Layout
The contents page of KERRANG! Has been set out in
columns provided with feature titles and page numbers. In
each column there is a subheading in yellow with a black
box around it to divide each category within the information
provided. There are no bullet points however the page
numbers are highlighted in red and used in a similar way to
bullet points shown to the left of each feature title. Images
have been used to highlight important sections of the
magazine/ likely sections that the audience may want to
read with a group shot at the top of the contents page with a
caption and a page number in bold (used with bright
colours) to show where it is in the magazine and what it’s
about in a simple form.
The Use of Text
The style of fonts alternate in the contents page depending
on the caption of focus used, such as the information in the
bottom right of the contents relating to the issue being
created with help from….. The font style in this section is
clear but bold, highlighted with a grey box and a title in
yellow. Headings and sub-headings are used in the same
way within the main section of the
3. Main Task: Contents Page Analysis
KERRANG!
The Use of Images
The biggest image is at the top of the page as it would make sense for this type and size of
image to be placed here as it is a group shot with a page number and caption. However further
down the page the images start to get smaller to ensure the page is filled plus the information
used which then relates to this. There is a two-shot, two group shots and a medium close-up
on the page.
Representation
With the uses of imaging and colour different social groups that have been represented on the
contents on the contents page, however there is really only one that is noticeable in which it is
aiming towards the younger generation of people up to mid-20s. Though there is a small
section towards the top right as this may relate to someone slightly older from just looking at
the image and font style used. (Including lack of colour and exaggeration of style)
Audience
The layout of the magazine will help to address the audience as it has been set out in columns
as the information can be clearly read. The images and feature titles can then relate to this. The
text has been used within captions and information that relates to the images used which may
help to address the reader in understanding what the information may be leading to/ what it is
about.
4. Main Task: Contents Page Analysis
Q
Layout
The contents page for Q has also been set out in a column
form in which the feature titles and page numbers are set
out to show what is in the magazine. There are no bullet
points but the page numbers are linked with the subheadings with the use of separate colours to divide them
and the separate categories between each section. The
images have been set out all in one place with feature
titles used in a similar way as captions to relate to the
images. There is also a section to the right side of the
page known as the review giving a guide to each
section/category of the magazine.
Use of Text
The red text has been used for the sub-headings in the
main section, which is also slightly larger so it is more
noticeable, of the contents followed by a clear but classic
font style similar to Times New Roman to present
information on the feature titles to show what it is about
for each category. A slightly larger font size has been used
for the review section to the right of the page again to
make it more noticeable which relates to the image and
has been surrounded by a text box. The masthead has
also been used in this way but with the use of a different
font and size.
5. Main Task: Contents Page Analysis
Q
Use of Images
As mentioned the images have been mashed together similarly to the cover of the
KERRANG! Magazine to show the main focus of what is to be in the magazine in relation
to the page numbers, graphical effects and information provided. There is also an image
at the top of the Q review section with a caption which relates to the text below.
Representation
This contents page really on focuses on the younger generation because of the images of
young people used and the use of colours for various graphical effects including subheadings and text box backgrounds. This would also relate to people who like the type of
music mentioned in this magazine.
Audience
The simplistic layout helps to address the reader especially as it may be more suited to
the younger generation. To add to this not a lot of writing is used but the use of feature
titles and colour used especially for text boxes and backgrounds it makes up for the fact
that there isn’t a lot of writing.
6. Main Task: Contents Page Analysis
NME
Layout
The content of NME is set out again in columns involving a lot of
text/information relating to the few images used and the rest of the
magazine. Again no bullet points are used but similarly to the
KERRANG! Contents page it uses Page numbers in the way that you
would use bullet points to present feature titles. The page is divided
into three sections with the first being page numbers and information
in relation to what was presented on the cover. The second section
involving images and captions to go with them and finally the third
section telling you what is new in this issue providing a band list.
Use of Text
The font size appears slightly larger generally in comparison to the
other magazines analysed which may be due to the fact that this
magazine may suit the older audience. The style is simplistic but
understandable making it a suitable and a good overall font to use
throughout this type of magazine. The font colour only appears to
change when there is a title such as the masthead or a subheading/caption in relation to an image.
7. Main Task: Contents Page Analysis
NME
Use of Images
There are few images used on the contents page however those that are used have captions in
relation to them to provide them with meaning towards the audience. There predominantly
appears to be a use of close-ups and medium close-ups. Most of the images used are also small
close-ups with two of them in the second column in the contents being circular.
Representation
The contents may appeal more to the older generation of people due to the amount of text used
and few visual enhancements/images used. The graphical effects appear mainly at the top of the
page followed by a mass of information about the magazine including the feature titles. Some
bright colours are used but they are not as vibrantly used as the other contents pages analysed
so it may not suit the younger generation as much however the type of music mentioned in this
magazine may relate to anyone.
Audience
The amount of information and images provided may address the older audience as it is
providing more context than in comparison to a magazine which may suit someone of a
younger age. The layout is simple, set out in columns which titles and information in each.
