exchange of media text in your chosen media area. (Film)

Examiners comments – key points
• “Candidates seem to have far more knowledge of production than any
other phase of film, but at times this led to naive answers, which
ignored both the exchange of media texts the role of film audiences.”
• The examiner notes that while most candidates had good knowledge
of the production stage of a film, it does not make up for ignoring
other aspects of film. For future answers, it is important to make sure
every relevant aspect of a film has been taken into account and
discussed, as the examiner mentions here, stating that mentioning
more things than just production created a successful answer:
Examiners comments – key points
• “It was noted that one centre had good success comparing Slumdog
Millionaire and Avatar by extending their case studies and investigating the
ownership, production and exchange of these films in detail whilst referring
to other films and the effect of new technology.”
• The examiner feedback also makes clear the importance of relating your
answer to the question, and adapting the knowledge you already have to
meet the demands of the question.
• “In an examination candidates need the skill to adapt their case study
knowledge and understanding to the demands of a specific question.”
• Comparing two institutions proved successful according to the feedback, as
it allows the candidate to talk about the contrasts between each institution
and how the differences make them more or less successful.
Mark Scheme Comparison
• The main difference between level 3 and 4 is the accuracy of your case studies to the
question and the relevance of the case studies for backing up a point.
• Main loss of marks is for straying away from the question and lack of relevance behind the
chosen example case studies
