A Report On The Los Penasquitos Trail
In late October our class explored the Los Penasquitos Trail in Sorrento Valley and collected samples
of the area s vegetation, water sources and soil. We hiked early in the morning on a dry, dirt trail
surrounded by drought resistant landscaping. The soil samples for this experiment were collected from
the descending end of a hill leading down to the Wagon Creek Bridge. It was our assumption that this
area would have more microorganisms because of the increased foot traffic. The purpose of this report
is to discuss the bacteria we discovered in our soil sample. The samples were kept in plastic tubes with
a closed lid until we were ready for analysis. One gram of the soil was measured out from the tube and
mixed with 20ml of deionized water. A serial dilution was prepared consisting of five glass test tubes
filled with 9ml of culture broth. Afterwards, 1ml of the soil was piped from the center of the sample
and placed into the first tube of the serial dilution. We lightly capped each tube and incubated the
sample under a ventilation hood at room temperature (~24ºC) for 48 hours. After the incubation period
the samples were mixed well will a vortex. We then piped 1ml of the first dilution into the second
dilution and mixed thoroughly with the vortex. This process was repeated with remainder of the
dilutions.. Streak plates were prepared in petri dishes filled with premade nutrient agar and 100µl of
the third, fourth and fifth dilutions. We streaked an additional

The Similarities Between Humans and Fish
Human and fish are not closely related on the outside. Most people would not see how we can share
same features with fishes, but scientists do know that these two species share homologous features.
These features imply that human and fish are related in the lineage of chordate because human shared
homologous features with fish. Homologous features shared by human and fish lighten up the
evolutionary pathway from the earliest vertebrate by sharing similar structures of the hands and fins.
The development of teeth that diversified into features that showed up from the skin, and down to the
instruction that made us who we are. The similar bone structures and genetic made up are just

In this same section, Shubin included Charles Darwin s statement that makes it easier to understand.
Humans have the same layout as other vertebrate creatures because we all came from a common
descent (Shubin p. 32). Finally, the ancient fish, the Eusthenpteron, which we shared this limbs
structure with was discovered in Devonian rocks around 380 million years old. It had the exact limbs
structure as Owen described, however for this fish, the bones of the limbs were inside a fin (Shubin,
p.33). This ancient fish unlocked the mystery that we are derived from a common ancestor that enable
us to hold tools to do our everyday life tasks.
Humans spent thousands of dollars going to the dentists so we can keep using our teeth healthy and be
able to chew on food that we eat every day. Teeth are earliest development and the lead to many other
features. They were first seen in eel like vertebrate, the Conodonts that had armor teeth like structure
that were made from the interaction of two skin layers. Also found in the ancient fish called
Ostracoderms (Shubin, p.77). Its head were composed of tiny bone shield that were made from the
teeth like structures. Teeth were developed to process food. The development of teeth was composed
of two layers of the tissue in the skin. The protein in the outer layer of the skin produce enamel and
the inner layer produces the dentine and the pulp inside the tooth (Shubin, p.78). The process of two

Sullivan Airport Research Paper
If you have ever passed through Sullivan Illinois, or live in Sullivan, I am sure you went over railroad
tracks and thought how can these be in this bad of condition? Sullivan is a very small city with a
population of 4,400 people. There are a lot of people passing through Sullivan every day. On their way
to school, work, to the store, or just passing through. For the most part people would have to go over a
railroad track to get anywhere and they are in very poor conditions. There is no bypass to get around
them so it backs up cars, and it doesn t help the trains take around five or more minutes to pass; along
with this I think it is very unsafe for people to drive on, walk over, and cross them. In Sullivan, there
are two railroads, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This is a serious problem for some people who do not know what the tracks are like and do not know
how slow to go over them. This could cause many accidents and sometimes even serious injuries.
Every time someone drives over a railroad they should not have to slow to down to ten miles an hour
or slower. Yes, it is a good idea too and is safer, but what if they were smooth and flat and people
could just keep going the speed limit. It would make things more efficient and faster to get to places.
If the driver goes too fast over the tracks it could damage their car because the railroad is not flat. For
instance, on my way to school, I have to go over a railroad track and it is in terrible condition. There
are no meters to know if a train is coming, one of the lights are out also to know when a train is
coming, it is so bumpy even going slow doesn t help, I jerk back and forth, and drivers cannot see if
there is oncoming traffic because the tracks are elevated higher than the rest of the road. An easy way
to solve this is lower the tracks to the same level as the road to where it is flat. People walking could
see oncoming traffic and have a better understanding of where to walk. Another way to solve this is
get new tracks to lie on the road. A few years ago, Sullivan got new tracks near where the highway
crosses them in the middle of town and it is so much smoother and easier to drive over then most of
the railroads in town. It might cost some money, but I think it is something the city of Sullivan should
invest

South Africa
The history of South Africa encompasses over three million years. Ape like hominids who migrated to
South Africa around three million years ago became the first human like inhabitants of the area now
known as South Africa. Representatives of homo erectus gradually replaced them around a million
years ago when they also spread across Africa and into Europe and Asia. Homo erectus gave way to
homo sapiens around 100,000 years ago. The first homo sapiens formed the Bushman culture of
skilled hunter gatherers. Around 2,500 years ago Bantu peoples migrated into Southern Africa from
the Niger River Delta. The Bushmen and the Bantu lived mostly peacefully together, although since

South Africa became a republic in 1961. The African National Congress offered the most active black
run opposition to apartheid, and after two decades of repression and economic troubles, the
government of F.W. de Klerk dismantled the apartheid system in 1992. The first multi racial vote in
South African history took place in 1994, electing Nelson Mandela as President. South Africa now
sees itself as a multi racial democracy.
Into the future
While the ANC (African National Congress) grassroots hold Mbeki in far less affection than the
beloved Madiba (Mandela), he has proven himself a shrewd politician, maintaining his political pre
eminence by isolating or co opting opposition parties. In 2003, Mbeki manoeuvred the ANC to a two
thirds majority in parliament for the first time, giving it the power to re write the constitution if it
chooses.
Yet not everything has gone the ANC s way. In the early days of his presidency, Mbeki s effective
denial of the HIV crisis invited global criticism, and his conspicuous failure to condemn the forced
reclamation of white owned farms in neighbouring Zimbabwe unnerved both South African
landowners and foreign investors.
Non political crime has increased dramatically since the end of apartheid. According to a report by
Sibusiso Masuku, in the seven years between 1994 and 2001, violent crime increased by 33% .[1] The
Economist reports the killing of approximately

of alternates. There was then an approval of agenda items, a report given by the town planner, reports
from the board members, and then the board members opened the floor to public comments, which
none were given. Before the issues were addressed there was a review of old minutes, and selection of
a new secretary. Following the agenda items, the issues were presented.
David Newhall, who is a perspective lot buyer, brought the first issue to attention, which was asking
for approval to construct a driveway, and water and electric utilities for a new single family house.
This new development would occur within the Wetland Conservation Overlay District and this
proposal was the final action of this movement. The board members

Increasing Minimum Wage
Why the minimum wage should not be increased 211
The minimum wage is a topic which has been heavily discussed amongst the people of the United
Kingdom. Some think it should be lowered, some think it is at the right amount and others think it
should be increased. I was shocked when I found out what the minimum wage was as I thought how
could anyone live on such a little amount. I thought how could anyone afford to pay all of their bills
and everything else on top of that like food and clothes. But then I looked into it more and I realised
that the minimum wage is at that amount for a reason, these reasons are ones which I agree with.
The minimum wage is the same no matter where you live. For example, if you re on the minimum

The Ford Production Of Ford Pinto
The Ford automobile company began producing the Ford Pinto line up in 1968. The Chief Executive
Officer (CEO) at the time of the pinto production was Lee Iacocca. The reason for the decision to
mass produce the pinto in a short amount of time is because American automobiles were losing market
share to smaller Japanese imports. Lee Iacocca wanted his engineers to design and manufacture a
compact car that weighed less than 2,000 pounds and cost less than 2,000 dollars. Because of this
monumental task from Lee Iacocca, that meant the ford pinto automobile would have to be built
within 25 months instead of the typical 43 months. There are many safety test that is mandated by the

The savings from not installing the baffle was $20.9 million dollars. The Ford Motor Company s
reputation also suffered. From a utilitarian theory, the Ford Motor Company focus on damage arising
from this decision of money and nothing else. Money is seen as value by the Ford Motor Company, so
by losing money by law suites and protecting the Ford Motor Company employees outweigh the
collateral damage the Ford Pintos line up imposes. Jeremy Bentham brings to light the pleasure and
pain aspect of what the decision would bring. In this case the Ford Motor Company expresses that the
money saved from the recall brings more pleasure to the most amount of people. The money being
saved is obviously from not installing the baffle between the gas tank and rear bumper. The consumer
will also save money by the Ford Motor Company not issuing a recall. If the Ford Motor Company
issued a recall, then the price of the Ford Pinto would be more than what was stated thus maybe
making it not comparable to other cars in its class. You must also consider the pain that this decision
creates. Because the Ford Motor Company refused to issue a recall to install the baffle between the gas
tank and the bumper, it has created pain and suffering to those who were affected by rear end collision
injuries. You have to consider the Ford Motor Company s reputation after they made the decision to
not recall the Ford Pinto to

Descriptive Essay About Michaelmas
Michaelmas
Every year, on the colorful fall day of September 29th, Sacramento Waldorf School hosts a festival
where good triumphs and evil parishes. Young girls and boys eagerly dress up as knights, to help Saint
George and Saint Michael conquer and tame the malicious dragon, through good actions and deeds.
Along with fun activities, caramel apples, and motivating spirit, Michaelmas is a special way to
prepare students for the challenging academic year ahead.
Michaelmas is a whole school event, where grades first through twelve are assigned a different role, to
put on a show that has its own unique twist each time. The roles include villagers (played by first
through fourth grade), Knights (played by the fifth grade) the dragon (Played by the sixth grade),
Lords and nobles (played by seventh through eleventh grade) and lastly, Saint George and Saint
Michael (played by twelfth graders). The story told is a classic good vs. evil, preformed inside a giant
circle, created by everyone attending the festival. A town of poor villages are fearful of a dragon, who
is merciless and cruel. One day, the dragon attacks the village, leaving the villagers desperate and
frightened. All the noble knights flee in fear, except for one, Saint George. Saint George bravely faces
the dragon, but instead of using his sword, he kneels and prays to saint Michael to give him wisdom
and strength. Michael appears out of the heavens, and empowers Saint George, with courage, and
kindness. Saint George

Necessities for Parents
As of 2014, there are an estimated 153 million orphans in the world (Wiki Answers). This statistic is
both saddening and frightening because all of those children who do not have parents are being
exposed to life without someone to care for them and their basic needs. Growing up, it can be
extremely difficult at moments to deal with parents and not question them from time to time. All
children have some type of problem with their parents or legal guardians at one point in time or
another. Parents are constantly being taken for granted because children do not always understand just
how important their parents are when it comes to the role that they play in their life. The age group

Children need that acceptance from their parents in order to feel free to explore his or her world and
express himself or herself to you without fear of [their parent s] disapproval (Eugster). Parents are also
supposed to provide their child with security and stability. According to Jayshree Shah, stability and
security are the most critical ingredients a child needs in order to thrive in our world. Children need to
know that their parents have everything under control so that they are not constantly worrying about
those things themselves. There has to be routines and order in a child s life so that they are not
confused and they will have a semblance of what they can expect. The routines can be as simple as
washing your face when you wake up every morning or saying your prayer every night right before
you go to bed. These routines and stability are useful in crazy situations because even though your
child s world may be spinning they know that even when things go wrong your love and commitment
towards [them] will remain (Shah). Another thing that stability and security helps with is making a
child independent. When a child has a daily routine they know what to follow and once they get used
to that routine they will memorize it and start doing it on their own making them independent and
responsible individuals.

Summary Of Orientalism And The Clash Of Civilization
The way in which Said and Huntington define culture within their texts Orientalism and The Clash of
Civilisation, divulges each author s position within and perception of both the Arab and Western
Worlds. The difference in each author s ideology and contexts Said (a professor in comparative lit with
a Palestinian background, writing in 1978, a time of conflict and devastation in the middle east) and
Huntington, (an American political scientist writing at a time in which his country is at a height of its
power), causes what is described by Said as The clash of definitions (SD). Said views culture as a
culmination and product of ideologies, morals and beliefs propagated by members of society.
Huntington views culture as more definite, established and finite. Said defines a specific culture in
relation to others whist Huntington believes each culture is its own separate entity. Through the
exploration of these contrasting views it can be interpreted that a key difference between each
definition is that Said defines culture as more broad and capable of being influenced whilst
Huntington views it only as a powerful influencer. This may also reflect their positions as either from
the West or the Orient.
Whilst Huntington defines culture as basic and less mutable , Said acknowledges culture as a complex
matter . He defines culture as a product of society and its values and refers to Gramsci s theories of
consent and cultural hegemony to support this definition. Gramsci s

Lake Bellville Essay
The family lived on Lake Bellville in a wood framed house. The slope that led to the lake was not
steep enough to ride a toboggan over the snow. According to the family legend, the house became
warm only in July and August.
Their wood stove heated one room in the two story house. Therefore, three boys slept in the same bed.
As their mother taught them the alphabet, she pointed out that when they slept, they formed an E,
which stood for exemplary trouble.
When the war began in 41, the oldest boy left for the Navy. He was 16 when Pearl Harbor occurred.
He told his father, If you don t sign for me, I ll steal a rowboat and row across the Pacific to fight.

these countries are in this position appears to be a mystery, despite many cash grants, relief efforts,

The origins of the debt crisis lie in the beginning of the Cold War era. An era in which the two
superpowers of the world sought to gain alliances with as many nations as possible. One such method
of attracting allegiance was to provide military aid and economic aid
(termed defense support by the US)[5] to countries such as Taiwan and
South Korea that lay directly in the path of communist efforts. One such individual involved in
defense support projects was Secretary of
State John Foster Dulles, who quickly realized what a disadvantageous situation the American
government had found themselves in by offering only military support. Dulles stated that he was being

viewpoint. He also gives Reuven self confidence and the ability to make his own decisions. He
supports Reuven, helps him through hard times, and shares insights with him. A man must fill his life
with meaning, meaning is not automatically given to life. It is hard work to fill one s life with
meaning, Mr. Malter once said to his son.
Reuven acts as a buffer between Reb and Danny Saunders. Since Reb feels he can t talk to Danny in
order to raise him properly, he talks to Reuven about Danny. They talk to each other through Reuven.
Reuven is also a very supportive and encouraging friend to Danny. He gives him advice and is willing
to listen to Danny s problems.
In this predominately Jewish setting, Billy Merrit and Tony Savo give Reuven a window into the
outside world. Reuven learned about Gentile culture when with them. They serve an important role in
the novel by teaching Reuven that suffering is universal and life isn t always fair. It really awakened
him to new ideas.

but he unable to relate to people. Reuven is very bright and relates well to people, but he finds

The Host In The Canterbury Tales
On its surface, the Host s presence in the Merchant s account from Chaucer s Canterbury Tales seems
to portray the Host as empathetic towards the Merchant. This makes sense because the Host is initially
depicted as a Christ like figure in the General Prologue. Close reading reveals, however, that the
deeper significance of the story is that the Host uses the Merchant as a mechanism to express his own
desires. Consequently, the Christ like persona that the Host embodies in the General Prologue
becomes antithetical throughout the Merchant s story. This thesis will be demonstrated by means of
close reading, including reference to the following Principles of Close Reading: Structure, Temporal
Order, and Diction. Several instances in the General ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
After the Host finishes talking about his own wife and the vices of women, he concludes with the
following statement: To tellen al, wherfor my tale is do (211.2440). Essentially, the Host says to tell
all, therefore his tale is finished. The use of the word tale embodies a much deeper significance here.
Because this word is used to describe each character s story, it appears as though the Host has created
his own story of sorts in The Epilogue. This supports the idea that the Host uses the Merchant as a
mechanism to exploit his own personal interests. For the Host tells the Merchant what type of tale to
tell, claiming that his tale is finished implies that the Host is actually in control of the Merchant s
story. Moreover, because the Host makes this statement in the very last line of The Epilogue, there
exists a sort of finality in his statement. The Host quite literally has the last word here, which implies
that he ultimately takes priority over the Merchant. In the end, the Host s personal interests are at the
forefront of this story, and the Merchant is merely a mechanism through which the Host can prioritize
his own

The Firs Nation
The experience of the Firs Nation s during the fur trade would have been a new and novel situation for
all First Nation s. York and Hudson Bay Company led a competition between anyone living in Canada
at the time but it became very competitive for the First Nation tribes. There was increasing fur and
goods in 1730, but shortly after there was a sharp decline in goods until 1750 because of the
competition was so hard. Indian tribes competed with one another for control of the trading posts.

The York factory actually used a unit called a MD (made beaver) which was a prime pelt of beaver,
and they sued that measuring unit as a way trading with the First Nation s. For example, a cotton

that the First Nation s couldn t understand the ideas of surplus or inflation , so they begin adjusting
prices and short changing the First Nation s. The First Nation s noticed this, and began compromising

MB per year for basic necessities. The short changing of the First Nation s forced them into bargaining
within their own terms of reference, so when the time arose, they were able to bargain effectively with
other tribes. Another aspect of trading was the gift giving to the First Nation s that happened before
trading days, and had this not occurred, no trading would have happened. The Europeans also gave

The usefulness of just using support alone will only tell you how many times each item appear

Claude Monet s The Impressionist Era
Born in Paris in 1840, Claude Monet would later become a leading artist in the Impressionist era. At a
young age, Monet had a passion for nature and art and in 1859, Monet began to study art in Paris.
Here he met many artists such as Bazille, Sisley, and Renoir. Monet practiced painting en plein air or
moving from inside the studios to painting outside in the open. Embodying the Impressionist era in
1873, Monet painted Impression, Sunrise , showing many characteristics that define Impressionism
and Monet s painting style (Figure 1). The painting shows lax, bold, and precise brush strokes moving
away from the previously blended and even style of earlier eras. Monet uses; cool purples, blues,
bright oranges, and yellows show the effect of the natural light and capture the moment and the feeling
of the sunrise. In later years, Monet focused mostly on landscapes which, today are notably Monet s
most famous works.
Pierre Auguste Renoir was born in France in 1841 and like Monet was also a leading artist in the
Impressionist art movement. After moving to Paris between 1844 to 1846, Renoir began working as a
porcelain painter painting designs onto dishes and china. In 1862, Renoir started studying art in Paris

A good way to look at your subconscious is like the gas in your car that you drive. You obviously
know that there is gas in your car thanks to the fuel gauge and the fact that you physically pumped and
paid for it at the gas station; but when you turn the key and start your car you cannot see the gas
functioning to power the vehicle, and you don t really think about everything that it does to make your
car function while on your way down the road. A subliminal stimulus is found in this subconscious
section of our mind because they operate below the invisible line of what you are presently aware of
and are able to interpret by your subconscious (Biology Online, 2014).
The first understanding that there may be something other than our conscious that could influence us
came from a man named Sir Francis Galton in 1879. This belief would latter go on to inspire much of
Freud s theories of human behavior like the Freudian Slip, a time when unconscious though gets
blurted out during inappropriate circumstances (Gazzaniga, 2016). Since Galton and Freud take on our
subconscious we have advanced further to realize the term subliminal advertising. This term first
began during the 1970s and is described as the arrangements of words, pictures, and shapes

Why Is The Squire Dressed In Canterbury Tales
The Squire is the second character to be introduced in the Canterbury Tales written by Chaucer. Along
with the Knight, his father, they are the only nobility that are on the pilgrimage to Canterbury. The
Squire is a courteous and serviceable person especially in serving his father. He is a free spirited
romantic who is twenty years old. Although the Squire, as he often sings, is spontaneous and free, he
has performed bravely in his limited battle experience with strength and agility in honor of his lady.
Chaucer describes him as a lover and a cadet showing how he truly represents the romantic spirit of

When thinking about a novel, one of the most commonly used rhetorical tools used is imagery. When
a scene is important for the sake of the plot or important to the author, the author works hard to bring
the reader into the world that they see the action happening in. The same can be said of the
presentation of a certain sequence within a piece of sequential art. Whereas a square can be seen as an
ordinary frame for a comic, when the art is put into any other shape, it now stands out as important to
the reader and they are more inclined to noticed more detail within the scene or frame. The same
effect applies within the Narmer Palette and its presentation on the stone tablet that it is carved on.
The main parts of the story are in giant panels, framed in a large rectangle and surrounded by the
Egyptian goddess Bat, a cow goddess who was prevalent in the Old and Middle Kingdoms of Egypt.
The goddess was told to have two faces, one able to see to the past and the other to see towards the
future, hence why the face of a cow appears twice on each panel of significance. For many who were
to look upon the palette it would be a sign of a blessing, significance, and greatness. This particular
style of detail can be considered a rhetorical device because of its purpose towards the main theme of

Food Intake In Adolescents
Food Intake A poor diet containing high levels of fat or sugar and few nutrients can cause kids to gain

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that 32 percent of adolescent girls and

Benefits Of A New Team
When I was in Noida working for Headstrong, my team used to go out for lunch on special occasions.
As that area had quite many options, sometimes we used to be in a fix as to where to go. Another
reason for long decision making was because different people had their own tastes. And, few of them
had even been to places we were zeroing in on and didn t want to go again. Now, that was a mess as it
would delay our outings that were supposed to become a lifetime memory for a few at least! We tried
to plan well ahead in advance, but that also had issues as people wanted to delay it to the last minute.
We primarily relied on word of mouth recommendations and what we as a team preferred the most.
All in all, it used to go just fine most of the times. However, i remember one incident when one of our
new team members strongly recommended a restaurant to which his family were regular visitors for
many years. He was giving mouthwatering description of the dishes available there and most of us
melted like butter on a parantha and were looking forward to go there. Come the D day, being a
foodie, i was especially charged up; but there was one delay after another as few of the folks were held
up in meetings. It was way past my usual lunch time and finally, we went ahead around quarter to 3.
We were all very hungry but to our utter disappointment we found the place closed.
The colleague who had recommended us looked pretty sad and asked nearby shops if the restaurant
had closed for good.

The dams built for irrigation are often diversion dams, which are usually constructed to stop the
natural course of the river for sending the water to a different place of need. To control flooding in
certain areas, detention dams are constructed to either stop or slow the flow of the water in a river or
stream. These dams have been constructed worldwide for drinking water, flood control, drinking
water, hydropower, irrigation, navigation, and water storage. Structures such as towers or bridges do
not even experience a fraction of the forces acting on that of a dam holding back the flow of a river or
a lake. There are numerous factors one must consider before the construction of a dam. The basic
concept that one must understand before the construction of a dam, are the forces that act on a dam.
There are tremendous forces acting on the material used in the construction of the dam. For example,
concrete is an essential material for the construction of a dam and factors such as its compressive
strength must be considered when a huge mass of water acts on it. Furthermore, to construct any dam,
engineers must consult a variety of criteria. For example, flowing water tends to erode everything
eventually no matter the material whether it be soil or the concrete used to construct the dam. Civil
engineers who specialize in water resource engineering are tasked with designing a dam that can

you all flesh must come. God let everlasting light shine upon us grant us eternal rest. The famous Lord
s prayer : Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. The kingdom come. They will be
done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses, as we
forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. We did
that before every theology class, my understanding is we should restraint temptation in our life, keep
evil away from us. Prayer over the offering: Receive ,Lord you re your kindness, the sacrificial
offering we make for all your servants who sleep in Christ , that ,set free from the bonds of death by
this singular sacrifice, they may merit eternal life .Through Christ and Lord. Even for me who have no

The Mexican Revolution Of Mexico And The United States Essay
During the Mexican Revolution there were many prominent figures that emerged during the long
struggle. Some of the figures had a positive impact on the region, and some others a very negative
impact on the people of Mexico and their quest for an uncorrupted government. One figure that stands
out in the border region between Mexico and The United States during this time is General Francisco
Pancho Villa. To understand Pancho Villa s significant role during this uprising it is important to
understand who Villa was prior to the revolution, and what acts lead to his rise to power.
Francisco Pancho Villa (born Doroteo Arango on June 5th, 1878) was known as a bandit prior to his
life as a Mexican General. Villa was born to sharecropper parents on a hacienda in San Juan Del Rio,
Durango, Mexico. After the death of his father, Villa only in his teens became the head of his family.
Villa soon found himself on the run from the law and the Haciendas owner after he shot the man in the
foot after an altercation over Villa s sister; this is what led to him initially becoming an outlaw. While
on the run as a fugitive Villa adapted other well known bandito ways of making money including
robbing haciendas, and sticking up wealthy mine owners, this is also when he officially dropped
Arango and only used Francisco Pancho Villa (Katz, 1998). Some bits of folklore can be found when
describing Villa s actions during this time period. There are tales of him acting like a Robin

Human Development Theories Paper
When it comes to the different development theories there is a significant amount that contribute to the
helping and aiding of the human development process. Chapter 1 gives readers a clear and concise
diagnostic of theories such as Behaviorism and Social Learning theory focusing on just the
behaviorism and the Ecological Systems of theory. These two theories have played a role in many
different instances throughout my friend Aliyah s life. Aliyah has continuously moved back from
Jamaica to the United States throughout her younger years. She participated in first, fourth, fifth, sixth,
seventh, and eighth grade in Jamaica with her grandmother and two aunts. Aliyah s second grade year
was spent in Orlando, but third grade happened in Georgia. She came back her ninth grade year to
Orlando and has been in Florida ever since, currently a sophomore at the University of Florida. ...

For example, her views of education has changed because in Jamaica she had to pay for school, but in
the US it is free which made her want to be more grateful and not take for granted the free schooling
she gets. If she never went to school in Jamaica where it cost money causing her to enter a new
mesosystem of immediate family and schooling she probably wouldn t care that education is free here
in the United States. Furthermore, her microsystem through family interaction and the affect it had on
her with her mother not being her in the US. Aliyah seems to rely on her family more back in Jamaica
because they were so close when she was there during schooling. Her many different environments
molded Aliyah into the person she is through Bronfenbrenner theory with the biologically influenced
dispositions also highlighting different key points in her

We March And The Blacker The Berry
A notable contributor to the socialization process is children s books. Though there is scant scientific
evidence of the effect of literature on children s development, many teachers and parents regard books
as important influences (Kimmel 209). Given recent racial tensions in the U.S., the socialization of
race through values presented in children s literature is necessary to examine. Three books presenting
race in children s literature are We March by Shane W. Evans, Civil War on Sunday by Mary Pope
Osborne, and The Blacker the Berry by Joyce Carol Thomas. Children s books with racial themes
promote values to varying levels of effectiveness, and the values fit into U.S. cultural identity. We

The series tells the adventures of siblings 8 year old Jack and 7 year old Annie as they travel in time
and space with help from the library of a mysterious magician (Osborne 1 2). The series promotes the
values of learning, curiosity, and adventure. Civil War on Sunday is about Jack and Annie s adventure
to the time of the U.S. Civil War, where they find a battlefield hospital and meet soldiers and nurses.
Although the book briefly touches upon the issue of racial justice (30 34), it s major moral theme is
anti war. Much of the book centers around 8 year old Jack feeling terrified of the war. Osborne s book
even lists values by describing them as a clue that the children need to find and enact on their quest
(Osborne, 24). They

Vibrio Fischeri Is A Bacterium That Served As The Model...
Vibrio fischeri is a Gram negative bacterium that served as the model organism in this experiment. We
isolated only the luxAB portion of the entire lux operon and inserted it into the pGEM vector plasmid
to transcribe the luciferase enzyme required for bioluminescence. Within the lux operon, luxAB is
responsible for producing subunits that form luciferase, which oxidizes the aldehyde made by luxCDE
into the reduced flavin mononucleotide FMNH2 and results in the production of light known as
bioluminescence[6]. The luxI gene that is also present on the operon produces the autoinducer which
interacts with a regulator, LuxR, [and] activates transcription of the lux operon at high cell density to
induce bioluminescence[4]. This interaction between the products of luxI and luxR is known as
quorum sensing and serves as an evolutionary purpose in the symbiotic relationship with Euprymna
scolopes, a type of squid that contains the light organ where the bacteria resides[6].
In the first portion of the experiment, Vibrio fischeri chromosomal DNA was isolated by lysing the
bacterial membranes and removing the proteins and lipids. Addition of a lysozyme solution breaks
down the peptidoglycan layer in Gram negative bacteria and proteinase K/SDS degrades the proteins
and disrupt the membranes. Liquid liquid extraction using Tris buffered phenol permits separation of
proteins and lipids from the DNA into the organic layer. It is also essential that the isolated DNA is
pure and free of

Tom Szaky, Chief Executive And Founder Of Terracycle
Read the following article in which Tom Szaky, chief executive and founder of TerraCycle, explains
how he makes money from other people s rubbish, and why he s worn the same pair of jeans for a
year: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business 31036601
Imagine he has hired you as Vice President of Sales. Now answer these questions as completely as you
can:
1) How do you imagine the concepts of anagnorisis and peripeteia might work in this example? (1
point)
Peripeteia means a turning point or a reversal moment, while anagnorisis means a point where a
person becomes aware of his or her true nature. Tom is in turning point of his life because turning a
waste into something else is not what majority people would think of, most of us will be disgusted by
only thinking about the concept. However not for Tom, he is actually passionate in the ecological
concept and his belief of doing good and making good money at the same time, which is what
anagnorisis means. Just like the pig farmers who gathered all the wastes from big casinos in Las
Vegas, and fed his pigs with very nutritious food that eventually double size them, Tom could do the
same! Tom could utilize the waste and turn it into something profitable. He has to believe in himself
and just like Jared says, as long as you like what you re doing, people will be drawn into that
positivity. He needs to be brave because this is not what majority of people could think of, or even
brave enough to do, so he should be the stand out one and

Analysis Of Normal Life By Dean Spade
Dean Spade and Critical Trans Politics
Activist and professor Dean Spade, in his book Normal Life: Administrative Violence, Critical Trans
Politics, and the Limits of Law, condemns current law policies surrounding discrimination and hate
crimes against transgender and gender non conforming populations. Spade proposes a critical trans
politics that is superior to the equal rights efforts of gay and lesbian activists up to this point in United
States history. Instead of desiring to be included in a law enforcement system that oppresses the
people it claims to protect, proponents of Spade s critical trans politics argue that the entire system,
along with all related systems of policing and regulation, need to be either fundamentally ... Show

This drastically reduces the life chances of poor people, queer and trans people, immigrants, and
people of color. In practice, every law system and mainstream law reform effort has attempted to
assign people and groups of people into two categories: who is worthy of a chance at a good life, and
who is not. Spade s proposal of a critical trans politics creates a system in which life chances are
redistributed in a way that gives marginalized groups the opportunity to survive and succeed. Within
the United States government en masse, there are many legal systems that contribute to the uneven
distribution of life chances and thus require dismantling and radical reconstruction. These include the
criminal justice system, the education system, the prison system (also called the prison industrial
complex), the social welfare system, the immigration system, the housing system, the healthcare
system, and the U.S. military. Each of these legal and political systems in some way targets a specific
population within the United States, very often transgender and gender variant people, and directly
reduces that population s life chances. This is the issue that Spade seeks to amend when he proposes
the move toward a critical trans politics.
Changing how large governmental structures function is neither an easy task nor a quick one; it will
require the undoing and unlearning of a very tightly held political and economic system by all parties
involved. At the center of Spade s call for

Women Of An Amorous Woman
In his The Life of An Amorous Woman, Ihara Saikaku traces the demise of a woman whose thoughts
and actions were controlled by insatiable lust and sexual desire. She begins as a wife and then
progresses to a court lady in waiting, a concubine to a feudal lord, courtesan, priest s mistress, brothel
prostitute, and, finally a streetwalker. Though courtesans did not play a major role in ancient Japan, by
the seventeenth century, the courtesan class was sanctioned by the government to the extent that
official decrees created a separate district to enclose them and put up physical boundaries that
mirrored the division between them and traditional prostitutes. According to Chesemore in her essay,
Women of the Floating World, as in all areas of Japanese life, attention was paid to the distinctions in
the rank of the various inhabitants of this world, and clearly the courtesan reigned supreme
(Chesemore, 1990). Saikaku writes that, because of her beauty and talent, she had her choice of men,
and in the streets she walks with her head held high and does not step aside for anyone. Far from the
traditional Confucian gender roles, the amorous woman can afford to be haughty, as she was showered
with gifts and other luxuries. In Japanese society, at the time when these works were created, the
feminine sexuality of a wife and of a courtesan were seen as two dichotomous roles that could not
possibly be carried out by a single woman, at least in an ideal world. While it is true many

The Corruption Of India And The Problem Of Abortion In India
All around the world, an abortion is a very controversial topic and is talked about immensely. In
America, when you hear people talk about an abortion, you hear them make a big deal about it. On the
other hand, within the Hindu religion in India, that is a different story. The first problem that arises
with regard to an abortion in India is how differently Hindu women are treated in comparison to
Hindu men. As a whole, the government of India is trying to control the people and the population of
the country by controlling the female to male sex ratios. As stated in the article Sexuality, caste,
governmentality: contests over gender in India by Nivedita Menon, the government is trying to cut
down the population for the development of the country. As they are trying to do this, they are
diminishing women and the rights that they have. The concern that the government should have
should not mainly be what the women and their bodies and the lives that they live, but woman as key
to the stability and reproduction of society and the patriarchal family. As stated in the article, the
population rise might not be a problem caused by women. It might not be a female problem because
the sex ratio was at an all time low for women as the ratio was 933 females per 1000 men in the 2001
census. One of the main reasons that the sex ratio for women has gone down is because of the widely
practiced selective abortion of female foetuses.
Secondly, some people might be wondering what an

Should Nuclear Power Plants Be Banned
Should nuclear power plants be banned?
Nuclear power plants have been around for many years. The first nuclear power plant was built in
1954. The controversy over them is whether they are harmful or beneficial to the environment and to
humans. We as humans tend use a lot of energy. Nuclear power plants are so called a strong candidate
for supplying our energy. There are many harmful remarks on nuclear power plants, and today I am
here to talk about why they should be potentially reduced if not banned. For starters it can lead to
cancer for children young of age, it can be used a weapon for destroying or targeting our country, and
how expensive they are related to other fuel factors. For instance, nuclear power plants are shown to
have an effect on kids with cancer. According to Ten Strikes Against Nuclear Power, There are
growing concerns that living near even accident free nuclear plants increases the risk for childhood
leukemia and other cancers. One Texas study found increased cancer rates in north central Texas since
a nuclear power plant was established in 1990, and a recent German study found childhood leukemia
clusters near several nuclear power sites in Europe (source 2). These power plants are causing
innocent kids to get cancer and leukemia which plays a huge role in a child s life who suffers from
one. Even though it is accident free it can still lead to other types of accidents. In many cases nuclear
power plants can be used as a weapon for many things involving nuclear. According to Ten Strikes
Against Nuclear Power, Nuclear reactors represent a clear national security risk, and an attractive
target for terrorists (source 2). Nuclear missiles, bombs, and other sorts of weapons can be used to
destroy or target our country. Robert Kennedy had found out that there are at least eight relatively easy
ways to cause a major meltdown at a nuclear power plant (source 2). Most nuclear power plants are
used as a target and advantage for war on other countries, including ours. In addition to the reasons
why nuclear power plants are harmful is the fact that they cost so much money to build. According to
What is Nuclear? Nuclear reactors are generally large and complex, with lots of reinforced

  • 2. A Report On The Los Penasquitos Trail In late October our class explored the Los Penasquitos Trail in Sorrento Valley and collected samples of the area s vegetation, water sources and soil. We hiked early in the morning on a dry, dirt trail surrounded by drought resistant landscaping. The soil samples for this experiment were collected from the descending end of a hill leading down to the Wagon Creek Bridge. It was our assumption that this area would have more microorganisms because of the increased foot traffic. The purpose of this report is to discuss the bacteria we discovered in our soil sample. The samples were kept in plastic tubes with a closed lid until we were ready for analysis. One gram of the soil was measured out from the tube and mixed with 20ml of deionized water. A serial dilution was prepared consisting of five glass test tubes filled with 9ml of culture broth. Afterwards, 1ml of the soil was piped from the center of the sample and placed into the first tube of the serial dilution. We lightly capped each tube and incubated the sample under a ventilation hood at room temperature (~24ºC) for 48 hours. After the incubation period the samples were mixed well will a vortex. We then piped 1ml of the first dilution into the second dilution and mixed thoroughly with the vortex. This process was repeated with remainder of the dilutions.. Streak plates were prepared in petri dishes filled with premade nutrient agar and 100µl of the third, fourth and fifth dilutions. We streaked an additional ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. The Similarities Between Humans and Fish Human and fish are not closely related on the outside. Most people would not see how we can share same features with fishes, but scientists do know that these two species share homologous features. These features imply that human and fish are related in the lineage of chordate because human shared homologous features with fish. Homologous features shared by human and fish lighten up the evolutionary pathway from the earliest vertebrate by sharing similar structures of the hands and fins. The development of teeth that diversified into features that showed up from the skin, and down to the instruction that made us who we are. The similar bone structures and genetic made up are just modification that we have and they are modification of what ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In this same section, Shubin included Charles Darwin s statement that makes it easier to understand. Humans have the same layout as other vertebrate creatures because we all came from a common descent (Shubin p. 32). Finally, the ancient fish, the Eusthenpteron, which we shared this limbs structure with was discovered in Devonian rocks around 380 million years old. It had the exact limbs structure as Owen described, however for this fish, the bones of the limbs were inside a fin (Shubin, p.33). This ancient fish unlocked the mystery that we are derived from a common ancestor that enable us to hold tools to do our everyday life tasks. Humans spent thousands of dollars going to the dentists so we can keep using our teeth healthy and be able to chew on food that we eat every day. Teeth are earliest development and the lead to many other features. They were first seen in eel like vertebrate, the Conodonts that had armor teeth like structure that were made from the interaction of two skin layers. Also found in the ancient fish called Ostracoderms (Shubin, p.77). Its head were composed of tiny bone shield that were made from the teeth like structures. Teeth were developed to process food. The development of teeth was composed of two layers of the tissue in the skin. The protein in the outer layer of the skin produce enamel and the inner layer produces the dentine and the pulp inside the tooth (Shubin, p.78). The process of two ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Sullivan Airport Research Paper If you have ever passed through Sullivan Illinois, or live in Sullivan, I am sure you went over railroad tracks and thought how can these be in this bad of condition? Sullivan is a very small city with a population of 4,400 people. There are a lot of people passing through Sullivan every day. On their way to school, work, to the store, or just passing through. For the most part people would have to go over a railroad track to get anywhere and they are in very poor conditions. There is no bypass to get around them so it backs up cars, and it doesn t help the trains take around five or more minutes to pass; along with this I think it is very unsafe for people to drive on, walk over, and cross them. In Sullivan, there are two railroads, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This is a serious problem for some people who do not know what the tracks are like and do not know how slow to go over them. This could cause many accidents and sometimes even serious injuries. Every time someone drives over a railroad they should not have to slow to down to ten miles an hour or slower. Yes, it is a good idea too and is safer, but what if they were smooth and flat and people could just keep going the speed limit. It would make things more efficient and faster to get to places. If the driver goes too fast over the tracks it could damage their car because the railroad is not flat. For instance, on my way to school, I have to go over a railroad track and it is in terrible condition. There are no meters to know if a train is coming, one of the lights are out also to know when a train is coming, it is so bumpy even going slow doesn t help, I jerk back and forth, and drivers cannot see if there is oncoming traffic because the tracks are elevated higher than the rest of the road. An easy way to solve this is lower the tracks to the same level as the road to where it is flat. People walking could see oncoming traffic and have a better understanding of where to walk. Another way to solve this is get new tracks to lie on the road. A few years ago, Sullivan got new tracks near where the highway crosses them in the middle of town and it is so much smoother and easier to drive over then most of the railroads in town. It might cost some money, but I think it is something the city of Sullivan should invest ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. South Africa The history of South Africa encompasses over three million years. Ape like hominids who migrated to South Africa around three million years ago became the first human like inhabitants of the area now known as South Africa. Representatives of homo erectus gradually replaced them around a million years ago when they also spread across Africa and into Europe and Asia. Homo erectus gave way to homo sapiens around 100,000 years ago. The first homo sapiens formed the Bushman culture of skilled hunter gatherers. South Africa became a republic in 1961. The African National Congress offered the most active black run opposition to apartheid, and after two decades of repression and economic troubles, the government of F.W. de Klerk dismantled the apartheid system in 1992. The first multi racial vote in South African history took place in 1994, electing Nelson Mandela as President. South Africa now sees itself as a multi racial democracy. Into the future While the ANC (African National Congress) grassroots hold Mbeki in far less affection than the beloved Madiba (Mandela), he has proven himself a shrewd politician, maintaining his political pre eminence by isolating or co opting opposition parties. In 2003, Mbeki manoeuvred the ANC to a two thirds majority in parliament for the first time, giving it the power to re write the constitution if it chooses. Yet not everything has gone the ANC s way. In the early days of his presidency, Mbeki s effective denial of the HIV crisis invited global criticism, and his conspicuous failure to condemn the forced reclamation of white owned farms in neighbouring Zimbabwe unnerved both South African landowners and foreign investors. Non political crime has increased dramatically since the end of apartheid. • 7. Increasing Minimum Wage Why the minimum wage should not be increased 211 The minimum wage is a topic which has been heavily discussed amongst the people of the United Kingdom. Some think it should be lowered, some think it is at the right amount and others think it should be increased. I was shocked when I found out what the minimum wage was as I thought how could anyone live on such a little amount. I thought how could anyone afford to pay all of their bills and everything else on top of that like food and clothes. But then I looked into it more and I realised that the minimum wage is at that amount for a reason, these reasons are ones which I agree with. The minimum wage is the same no matter where you live. The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) at the time of the pinto production was Lee Iacocca. The reason for the decision to mass produce the pinto in a short amount of time is because American automobiles were losing market share to smaller Japanese imports. Lee Iacocca wanted his engineers to design and manufacture a compact car that weighed less than 2,000 pounds and cost less than 2,000 dollars. Because of this monumental task from Lee Iacocca, that meant the ford pinto automobile would have to be built within 25 months instead of the typical 43 months. The savings from not installing the baffle was $20.9 million dollars. The Ford Motor Company s reputation also suffered. From a utilitarian theory, the Ford Motor Company focus on damage arising from this decision of money and nothing else. Money is seen as value by the Ford Motor Company, so by losing money by law suites and protecting the Ford Motor Company employees outweigh the collateral damage the Ford Pintos line up imposes. Jeremy Bentham brings to light the pleasure and pain aspect of what the decision would bring. In this case the Ford Motor Company expresses that the money saved from the recall brings more pleasure to the most amount of people. The money being saved is obviously from not installing the baffle between the gas tank and rear bumper. The consumer will also save money by the Ford Motor Company not issuing a recall. If the Ford Motor Company issued a recall, then the price of the Ford Pinto would be more than what was stated thus maybe making it not comparable to other cars in its class. You must also consider the pain that this decision creates. Because the Ford Motor Company refused to issue a recall to install the baffle between the gas tank and the bumper, it has created pain and suffering to those who were affected by rear end collision injuries. Growing up, it can be extremely difficult at moments to deal with parents and not question them from time to time. All children have some type of problem with their parents or legal guardians at one point in time or another. Children need that acceptance from their parents in order to feel free to explore his or her world and express himself or herself to you without fear of [their parent s] disapproval (Eugster). Parents are also supposed to provide their child with security and stability. According to Jayshree Shah, stability and security are the most critical ingredients a child needs in order to thrive in our world. Children need to know that their parents have everything under control so that they are not constantly worrying about those things themselves. There has to be routines and order in a child s life so that they are not confused and they will have a semblance of what they can expect. The routines can be as simple as washing your face when you wake up every morning or saying your prayer every night right before you go to bed. These routines and stability are useful in crazy situations because even though your child s world may be spinning they know that even when things go wrong your love and commitment towards [them] will remain (Shah). Another thing that stability and security helps with is making a child independent. When a child has a daily routine they know what to follow and once they get used to that routine they will memorize it and start doing it on their own making them independent and responsible individuals. ... • 13. Summary Of Orientalism And The Clash Of Civilization The way in which Said and Huntington define culture within their texts Orientalism and The Clash of Civilisation, divulges each author s position within and perception of both the Arab and Western Worlds. The difference in each author s ideology and contexts Said (a professor in comparative lit with a Palestinian background, writing in 1978, a time of conflict and devastation in the middle east) and Huntington, (an American political scientist writing at a time in which his country is at a height of its power), causes what is described by Said as The clash of definitions (SD). Said views culture as a culmination and product of ideologies, morals and beliefs propagated by members of society. Huntington views culture as more definite, established and finite. Said defines a specific culture in relation to others whist Huntington believes each culture is its own separate entity. Through the exploration of these contrasting views it can be interpreted that a key difference between each definition is that Said defines culture as more broad and capable of being influenced whilst Huntington views it only as a powerful influencer. This may also reflect their positions as either from the West or the Orient. Whilst Huntington defines culture as basic and less mutable , Said acknowledges culture as a complex matter . He defines culture as a product of society and its values and refers to Gramsci s theories of consent and cultural hegemony to support this definition. Gramsci s ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The origins of the debt crisis lie in the beginning of the Cold War era. An era in which the two superpowers of the world sought to gain alliances with as many nations as possible. One such method of attracting allegiance was to provide military aid and economic aid (termed defense support by the US)[5] to countries such as Taiwan and South Korea that lay directly in the path of communist efforts. One such individual involved in defense support projects was Secretary of State John Foster Dulles, who quickly realized what a disadvantageous situation the American government had found themselves in by offering only military support. Dulles stated that he was being forced to defend the interests of the US with one arm tied behind his back; namely the nations economic strength. This makes sense because the Host is initially depicted as a Christ like figure in the General Prologue. Close reading reveals, however, that the deeper significance of the story is that the Host uses the Merchant as a mechanism to express his own desires. Consequently, the Christ like persona that the Host embodies in the General Prologue becomes antithetical throughout the Merchant s story. Because this word is used to describe each character s story, it appears as though the Host has created his own story of sorts in The Epilogue. This supports the idea that the Host uses the Merchant as a mechanism to exploit his own personal interests. For the Host tells the Merchant what type of tale to tell, claiming that his tale is finished implies that the Host is actually in control of the Merchant s story. Moreover, because the Host makes this statement in the very last line of The Epilogue, there exists a sort of finality in his statement. He was giving mouthwatering description of the dishes available there and most of us melted like butter on a parantha and were looking forward to go there. Come the D day, being a foodie, i was especially charged up; but there was one delay after another as few of the folks were held up in meetings. It was way past my usual lunch time and finally, we went ahead around quarter to 3. We were all very hungry but to our utter disappointment we found the place closed. The colleague who had recommended us looked pretty sad and asked nearby shops if the restaurant had closed for good. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 36. Oil Vs Hemp Oil Cannabidiol (CBD) Oil vs. Hemp Oil In the medical marijuana, there seems to be some confusion regarding the difference between hemp oil and CBD or cannabidiol oil. As both products gain notoriety, more research is pursued, more doctors make recommendations, and more consumers turn to and experiment with these oils as alternative therapeutic treatments for a varying number of diseases, the need to inform the public is crucial. In 2009, in an attempt to respond to the misbranding of CBD products as hemp oil, the Hemp Industries Association (HIA) asserted, Our Hemp Industries Association position regarding this distinction calls on makers of CBD products to brand and market their products truthfully and clearly, so as to not further the confusion ... In contrast, CBD rich oil naturally has higher levels of CBD than hemp which would require a considerable amount to extract a useful amount of CBD. Hence, industrial hemp is not an optimal source of CBD rich oil, despite being present in the natural growing hemp plant. However, there have been references to CBD rich hemp oil that is extracted from hemp plants that are specifically and uniquely bred to produce potent natural occurring CBD. Civil Engineering Is A Professional Engineering Introduction Civil engineering is a professional engineering discipline that deals with the design of the physical and naturally built environment. One aspect of civil engineering is water resource engineering. Water resource engineering is a specific kind of civil engineering that involves the design of new systems and equipment that help manage the human water resources. In simpler terms water resources engineering is concerned with the collection and management of water. It particularly concerns the quality and quantity of water being managed in both underground and above resources. Since ancient times we civil engineers have been refining and expanding the concept of this aspect of water resources engineering. About 70% of the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The dams built for irrigation are often diversion dams, which are usually constructed to stop the natural course of the river for sending the water to a different place of need. To control flooding in certain areas, detention dams are constructed to either stop or slow the flow of the water in a river or stream. These dams have been constructed worldwide for drinking water, flood control, drinking water, hydropower, irrigation, navigation, and water storage. Structures such as towers or bridges do not even experience a fraction of the forces acting on that of a dam holding back the flow of a river or a lake. There are numerous factors one must consider before the construction of a dam. The basic concept that one must understand before the construction of a dam, are the forces that act on a dam. There are tremendous forces acting on the material used in the construction of the dam. For example, concrete is an essential material for the construction of a dam and factors such as its compressive strength must be considered when a huge mass of water acts on it. Furthermore, to construct any dam, engineers must consult a variety of criteria. For example, flowing water tends to erode everything eventually no matter the material whether it be soil or the concrete used to construct the dam. Civil engineers who specialize in water resource engineering are tasked with designing a dam that can ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 39. The Mexican Revolution Of Mexico And The United States Essay During the Mexican Revolution there were many prominent figures that emerged during the long struggle. Some of the figures had a positive impact on the region, and some others a very negative impact on the people of Mexico and their quest for an uncorrupted government. One figure that stands out in the border region between Mexico and The United States during this time is General Francisco Pancho Villa. To understand Pancho Villa s significant role during this uprising it is important to understand who Villa was prior to the revolution, and what acts lead to his rise to power. Francisco Pancho Villa (born Doroteo Arango on June 5th, 1878) was known as a bandit prior to his life as a Mexican General. Villa was born to sharecropper parents on a hacienda in San Juan Del Rio, Durango, Mexico. After the death of his father, Villa only in his teens became the head of his family. Villa soon found himself on the run from the law and the Haciendas owner after he shot the man in the foot after an altercation over Villa s sister; this is what led to him initially becoming an outlaw. While on the run as a fugitive Villa adapted other well known bandito ways of making money including robbing haciendas, and sticking up wealthy mine owners, this is also when he officially dropped Arango and only used Francisco Pancho Villa (Katz, 1998). Some bits of folklore can be found when describing Villa s actions during this time period. There are tales of him acting like a Robin ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Though there is scant scientific evidence of the effect of literature on children s development, many teachers and parents regard books as important influences (Kimmel 209). Given recent racial tensions in the U.S., the socialization of race through values presented in children s literature is necessary to examine. Three books presenting race in children s literature are We March by Shane W. Evans, Civil War on Sunday by Mary Pope Osborne, and The Blacker the Berry by Joyce Carol Thomas. • 42. Vibrio Fischeri Is A Bacterium That Served As The Model... Vibrio fischeri is a Gram negative bacterium that served as the model organism in this experiment. We isolated only the luxAB portion of the entire lux operon and inserted it into the pGEM vector plasmid to transcribe the luciferase enzyme required for bioluminescence. Within the lux operon, luxAB is responsible for producing subunits that form luciferase, which oxidizes the aldehyde made by luxCDE into the reduced flavin mononucleotide FMNH2 and results in the production of light known as bioluminescence[6]. The luxI gene that is also present on the operon produces the autoinducer which interacts with a regulator, LuxR, [and] activates transcription of the lux operon at high cell density to induce bioluminescence[4]. This interaction between the products of luxI and luxR is known as quorum sensing and serves as an evolutionary purpose in the symbiotic relationship with Euprymna scolopes, a type of squid that contains the light organ where the bacteria resides[6]. In the first portion of the experiment, Vibrio fischeri chromosomal DNA was isolated by lysing the bacterial membranes and removing the proteins and lipids. Addition of a lysozyme solution breaks down the peptidoglycan layer in Gram negative bacteria and proteinase K/SDS degrades the proteins and disrupt the membranes. Liquid liquid extraction using Tris buffered phenol permits separation of proteins and lipids from the DNA into the organic layer. It is also essential that the isolated DNA is pure and free of ... Now answer these questions as completely as you can: 1) How do you imagine the concepts of anagnorisis and peripeteia might work in this example? (1 point) Peripeteia means a turning point or a reversal moment, while anagnorisis means a point where a person becomes aware of his or her true nature. Tom is in turning point of his life because turning a waste into something else is not what majority people would think of, most of us will be disgusted by only thinking about the concept. However not for Tom, he is actually passionate in the ecological concept and his belief of doing good and making good money at the same time, which is what anagnorisis means. Just like the pig farmers who gathered all the wastes from big casinos in Las Vegas, and fed his pigs with very nutritious food that eventually double size them, Tom could do the same! Tom could utilize the waste and turn it into something profitable. He has to believe in himself and just like Jared says, as long as you like what you re doing, people will be drawn into that positivity. Spade proposes a critical trans politics that is superior to the equal rights efforts of gay and lesbian activists up to this point in United States history. Instead of desiring to be included in a law enforcement system that oppresses the people it claims to protect, proponents of Spade s critical trans politics argue that the entire system, along with all related systems of policing and regulation, need to be either fundamentally ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This drastically reduces the life chances of poor people, queer and trans people, immigrants, and people of color. In practice, every law system and mainstream law reform effort has attempted to assign people and groups of people into two categories: who is worthy of a chance at a good life, and who is not. Spade s proposal of a critical trans politics creates a system in which life chances are redistributed in a way that gives marginalized groups the opportunity to survive and succeed. Within the United States government en masse, there are many legal systems that contribute to the uneven distribution of life chances and thus require dismantling and radical reconstruction. These include the criminal justice system, the education system, the prison system (also called the prison industrial complex), the social welfare system, the immigration system, the housing system, the healthcare system, and the U.S. military. Each of these legal and political systems in some way targets a specific population within the United States, very often transgender and gender variant people, and directly reduces that population s life chances. This is the issue that Spade seeks to amend when he proposes the move toward a critical trans politics. Changing how large governmental structures function is neither an easy task nor a quick one; it will require the undoing and unlearning of a very tightly held political and economic system by all parties involved. • 45. Women Of An Amorous Woman In his The Life of An Amorous Woman, Ihara Saikaku traces the demise of a woman whose thoughts and actions were controlled by insatiable lust and sexual desire. She begins as a wife and then progresses to a court lady in waiting, a concubine to a feudal lord, courtesan, priest s mistress, brothel prostitute, and, finally a streetwalker. Though courtesans did not play a major role in ancient Japan, by the seventeenth century, the courtesan class was sanctioned by the government to the extent that official decrees created a separate district to enclose them and put up physical boundaries that mirrored the division between them and traditional prostitutes. According to Chesemore in her essay, Women of the Floating World, as in all areas of Japanese life, attention was paid to the distinctions in the rank of the various inhabitants of this world, and clearly the courtesan reigned supreme (Chesemore, 1990). Saikaku writes that, because of her beauty and talent, she had her choice of men, and in the streets she walks with her head held high and does not step aside for anyone. Far from the traditional Confucian gender roles, the amorous woman can afford to be haughty, as she was showered with gifts and other luxuries. In Japanese society, at the time when these works were created, the feminine sexuality of a wife and of a courtesan were seen as two dichotomous roles that could not possibly be carried out by a single woman, at least in an ideal world. • 46. The Corruption Of India And The Problem Of Abortion In India All around the world, an abortion is a very controversial topic and is talked about immensely. In America, when you hear people talk about an abortion, you hear them make a big deal about it. On the other hand, within the Hindu religion in India, that is a different story. The first problem that arises with regard to an abortion in India is how differently Hindu women are treated in comparison to Hindu men. As a whole, the government of India is trying to control the people and the population of the country by controlling the female to male sex ratios. As stated in the article Sexuality, caste, governmentality: contests over gender in India by Nivedita Menon, the government is trying to cut down the population for the development of the country. As they are trying to do this, they are diminishing women and the rights that they have. The concern that the government should have should not mainly be what the women and their bodies and the lives that they live, but woman as key to the stability and reproduction of society and the patriarchal family. As stated in the article, the population rise might not be a problem caused by women. It might not be a female problem because the sex ratio was at an all time low for women as the ratio was 933 females per 1000 men in the 2001 census. One of the main reasons that the sex ratio for women has gone down is because of the widely practiced selective abortion of female foetuses. Secondly, some people might be wondering what an ... • 47. Should Nuclear Power Plants Be Banned Should nuclear power plants be banned? Nuclear power plants have been around for many years. The first nuclear power plant was built in 1954. The controversy over them is whether they are harmful or beneficial to the environment and to humans. We as humans tend use a lot of energy. Nuclear power plants are so called a strong candidate for supplying our energy. There are many harmful remarks on nuclear power plants, and today I am here to talk about why they should be potentially reduced if not banned. For starters it can lead to cancer for children young of age, it can be used a weapon for destroying or targeting our country, and how expensive they are related to other fuel factors. For instance, nuclear power plants are shown to have an effect on kids with cancer. According to Ten Strikes Against Nuclear Power, There are growing concerns that living near even accident free nuclear plants increases the risk for childhood leukemia and other cancers. One Texas study found increased cancer rates in north central Texas since a nuclear power plant was established in 1990, and a recent German study found childhood leukemia clusters near several nuclear power sites in Europe (source 2). These power plants are causing innocent kids to get cancer and leukemia which plays a huge role in a child s life who suffers from one. Even though it is accident free it can still lead to other types of accidents. In many cases nuclear power plants can be used as a weapon for many things involving nuclear. According to Ten Strikes Against Nuclear Power, Nuclear reactors represent a clear national security risk, and an attractive target for terrorists (source 2). Nuclear missiles, bombs, and other sorts of weapons can be used to destroy or target our country. Robert Kennedy had found out that there are at least eight relatively easy ways to cause a major meltdown at a nuclear power plant (source 2). Most nuclear power plants are used as a target and advantage for war on other countries, including ours. In addition to the reasons why nuclear power plants are harmful is the fact that they cost so much money to build. According to What is Nuclear?
