This document discusses culling, or removing, young male deer called "spikes" from high fence deer ranches. While culling spikes has been researched for decades, there are good arguments on both sides. Culling spikes may be too extreme, as they could become marketable animals later. Allowing spikes to mature is important to see their potential before culling. In some areas, culling spikes can help decrease herd density where fawn production varies. However, doe nutrition is also key to genetic quality, so culling spikes is not necessary for improvement and they should be given a chance to develop.
