This document discusses different file formats used for storing digital images and other media. It provides information on common file formats like JPEG, PNG, GIF, PSD, TIFF, RAW, EPS, and their uses and characteristics. Key differences between raster and vector images are explained. Common software applications used for creating raster images like Photoshop and vector images like Illustrator are also mentioned. The document seeks to inform readers about the various digital file formats and their applications.
Raster graphics are made up of pixels arranged in a grid, so they have a fixed resolution. Larger raster images take up more file space due to more pixels. Raster images can be scaled down without quality loss but scaling up may cause pixelation. Vector graphics use paths instead of pixels, so they can be scaled up without quality loss. Common raster file formats include JPEG, TIFF, GIF, and BMP, which vary in compression, quality, and file size. Optimizing images by reducing file size makes uploading and loading faster without degrading quality. Proper naming and organization of image assets helps with file management and collaborative work.
The document discusses various file formats for images, including GIF, JPEG, PNG, SVG, EPS, AI, PDF, PSD, RAW, TIFF, BMP, vector graphics, and raster graphics. It provides details on the appropriate uses and key pros and cons of each format. GIF is best for images with flat colors while JPEG is best for photographic images. PNG is a good replacement for many GIFs but JPEG may be more efficient for photos. SVG and EPS can contain vector data but have limitations. PDF is good for protecting intellectual property but is meant for print. PSD contains the most image data but is Photoshop-specific. RAW files contain full sensor data while TIFF is a reliable cross-platform
Digital file formats can be either raster or vector graphics. Raster graphics are made up of pixels and use file formats like JPEG, TIFF, GIF, and BMP. Vector graphics use mathematical equations to describe paths, shapes, and strokes, and common formats are PSD, AI, FLA, and WMF. Compression reduces file sizes by decreasing image information, improving download speeds but reducing quality. Images can be captured through scanners, cameras, or graphics tablets. Files should be optimized, accurately named, and organized in folders for storage and management to improve workflow.

Royal Canin was re-branded by Samuel Preston because the old logo was bland and did not convey that it was a pet brand. Initial research involved paper questionnaires to understand how people viewed the brand and focus groups to get opinions on the logo. The old logo is shown along with the final logo, business card, and letterhead designs from the re-branding project. Samuel invites any questions about the new designs.
The researcher conducted initial research on the Royal Canin brand by gathering its history and information on existing products. They created questionnaires and held a focus group to get feedback on the current logo. Participants said the old logo was bland and did not convey what the brand sold. The researcher then gathered data from the questionnaires and focus group to help plan rebrand designs, focusing on keeping the color red while making the brand look crisp, clean, and stand out more. Through practicing Photoshop skills like the pen tool, the researcher developed effective pre-production and refined designs based on peer and tutor feedback. The final logo design incorporated elements suggested in focus groups like paw prints and images of cats and dogs to better communicate and appeal to

This document summarizes Ange Albertini's talk on "Funky file Formats". The talk discusses how files can take on multiple formats by exploiting ambiguities and tolerance in file specifications. Examples are given of files that are valid images, archives, documents, and encrypted files simultaneously. The talk also covers steganography techniques like hiding files within other file formats by manipulating metadata or unused portions of file specifications. Overall, the talk illustrates the concept of "format polymorphism" where single files can masquerade as multiple file types to evade detection or trigger different parser behaviors.
There are three main types of audio file formats: uncompressed, lossless compression, and lossy compression. Lossless compression preserves all audio quality while reducing file size, while lossy compression permanently removes some audio information to greatly reduce file size. Common audio formats include WAV (uncompressed), lossless WMA, MP3 and AAC (lossy), and MIDI (event-based musical instrument data). Audio is digitized through sampling, with higher sampling rates and more bits per sample providing better quality but larger file sizes. Formats like WAV and AIFF store uncompressed audio, while MP3 and WMA use lossy compression to reduce file sizes.

It also discusses topics like image capture methods, file compression, optimizing images for the web, file size considerations, file naming conventions, and asset management.
Raster graphics are made up of pixels that store color information. They have a fixed resolution and can distort when resized. Vector graphics use paths and curves instead of pixels, so they can be resized without quality loss. Common file formats include JPEG for photos, GIF for animations, PNG for images with transparency, and TIFF, BMP, PSD, AI for high-quality images. Files are compressed to reduce size, but this can cause quality loss from information reduction. Images can be captured via scanner, camera, or graphics tablet and optimized for web use by reducing size and resolution to improve loading speeds.
Raster graphics are made up of pixels and have a fixed resolution, so resizing can result in distortion. Vector graphics are made up of paths defined by points and curves, so there is no quality loss when resizing. Common file formats include JPEG for photographs, TIFF for publishing, GIF for small files like emails, and BMP from Paint. Vector formats include PSD for Photoshop layers, AI for logos, and FLA for animations. Compressing files reduces size but can lower quality, while optimizing removes unnecessary data without affecting quality. File size depends on layers and scaling before exporting preserves quality. Accurate naming and folders aid organization.
The document discusses various digital file formats including raster graphics (JPEG, TIFF, GIF, BMP), vector graphics (PSD, AI, FLA, WMF), and methods for capturing and optimizing graphics. JPEG is used to compress photos, TIFF maintains quality on edits, GIF uses 256 colors for animations, and BMP displays accurate color. PSD preserves Photoshop layers, AI is a vector format, FLA is for Flash movies, and WMF works on Windows. Compression reduces file sizes for storage and transfer while optimization improves loading speed online. Factors like bit depth, scaling, and file naming impact file sizes and organization.
The document discusses various digital file formats including raster graphics (JPEG, TIFF, GIF, BMP), vector graphics (PSD, AI, FLA, WMF), and methods for capturing and optimizing graphics. JPEG is used to compress large image files while TIFF maintains quality during editing. GIFs have small file sizes but limited colors. PSD files preserve layers in Photoshop. Compression reduces file sizes for easier sharing while optimization makes files smaller for faster loading online. Accurately naming and organizing assets in folders helps manage game development resources.

Methods for capturing and optimizing images are also outlined, along with factors that influence file size and best practices for naming and organizing assets.
There are various file formats used for different types of digital data and graphic design work. Raster images are made up of pixels while vector images use paths. Common raster formats include JPEG, PNG, GIF and TIFF. JPEG is best for photos but loses quality each time it's resaved. PNG is lossless and better for logos. PSD files preserve layers and are widely used in design. Vector formats include EPS, which prints at high quality. RAW files store unprocessed camera sensor data to give more editing control. Different programs are used to create and edit raster and vector images.
This document discusses different types of digital file formats for graphics, including raster formats like JPEG, TIFF, GIF, BMP, and vector formats like PSD, AI, FLA, and WMF. It describes the key characteristics of each format such as whether they are bitmap or vector images, if they support compression and layers, common uses, and advantages and disadvantages. The document also covers topics like compression, optimizing files, and different methods of capturing digital images.
This document discusses different types of digital graphics file formats including raster graphics like JPEG, TIFF, GIF, and BMP which use pixels and compression, and vector graphics like AI, FLA, and WMF which use paths and shapes. It also covers topics like file size, storage, naming conventions, and asset management for digital graphics files.
Raster graphics use pixels to form images, so file sizes are large. When resized, raster graphics become pixelated and distorted. Vector graphics use vectors and paths defined by starting and ending points, so they are scalable without quality loss, making them suitable for logos. Common raster graphic file formats include JPEG, TIFF, GIF and BMP. JPEG is used for web and is universal but loses quality with edits. TIFF retains quality but has large file sizes. GIF is used for animations and has small file sizes but poor quality. BMP has no compression but large file sizes. Common vector graphic file formats are PSD, AI and WMF. PSD is used by artists and retains layers but needs Photoshop.
Raster graphics are made up of pixels arranged in a grid, resulting in fixed resolution and potential distortion when resized. They are commonly used formats like JPEG, GIF, BMP and TIFF. Vector graphics use vectors defined by start and end points that can be lines, shapes, or paths. They can be resized without quality loss. Common formats are PSD, AI, FLA and WMF. File formats have different uses depending on factors like compression, quality, file size and editing capabilities. Images can be captured using scanners, cameras, or graphics tablets and optimized to reduce file size for web display with some potential quality reduction.
This document provides information on different types of digital graphics file formats including raster graphics, vector graphics, and specific file formats like JPEG, TIFF, GIF, BMP, PSD, AI, FLA, and WMF. It discusses advantages and disadvantages of each format as well as topics like compression, image capture methods, optimizing files, file sizes, naming conventions, and asset management.
The document describes research and rebranding work done for the pet food company Royal Canin. Initial research included learning the company history and gathering feedback from questionnaires and a focus group. The focus group said the old logo was "bland" and did not clearly communicate what the brand sold. New logo designs incorporated elements suggested in feedback, like a clearer crown image. Further feedback was gathered via additional focus groups and surveys. The final logo design incorporated a line drawing of a cat and dog with the brand name in red font, and testing showed it better communicated the brand's target market compared to the old logo.
The documents provide information from various sources on dog breeds. The Kennel Club pages discuss the histories and traits of German Shepherds, Labradors, and Dachshunds. Videos from the TV show Dogs 101 provide details on grooming needs, trainability, and suitability for children for various breeds. Additional sources include a Secret Life of Dogs TV show that shares dog facts and stories, as well as websites that fill in knowledge gaps for Chihuahuas and Dalmatians. Pictures from magazines and online provide ideas for laying out content in a booklet format.
Royal Canin was re-branded by Samuel Preston because the old logo was bland and did not convey that it was a pet brand. Initial research included paper questionnaires to understand how people viewed the brand, a focus group to get opinions on the logo, and research into the existing brand and products. The document then shows the old logo followed by final logo, business card, and letterhead designs from the re-branding project and asks if there are any questions about the new designs.
Royal Canin is a pet food company that was founded in 1967 and produces dog and cat food tailored to each breed's specific nutritional needs. It first introduced diets for large puppy breeds in 1980 and was the first to recognize different nutritional needs based on dog size in 1997. Royal Canin created the first breed-specific cat food for Persians in 1999. The company was sold to Mars for 1.5 billion euros in 2001 and is now based in the U.S.
The final logo was tested in a second focus group and found to better convey the pet food market and be more appropriate and effective for
Royal Canin is a company founded in 1967 that produces tailored dog and cat food for different breeds and sizes. They produce foods under categories like breed health nutrition and lifestyle nutrition. The company conducted market research including questionnaires and a focus group to understand public perception of their branding. Most respondents liked the red color but did not recognize what the company produced from the logo alone. This research found that while the target audience of pet owners was large, Royal Canin's brand was not widely recognized. The rebranding will aim to make the logo more prominently communicate that it is a pet food company through elements like incorporating an animal image and redesigning the unclear crown symbol.

2. WHAT IS A FILE FORMAT?
A file format is a way of storing information to be used at a
later date on a different or the same software as before. Some
of the many things that can be stored using file formats are
documents, images and films.
Also different file types require different formats for which to
work operate. For example Photoshop. This is compatible with
an image file because Photoshop is an image manipulation
software. However, due to this, files such as movie files are not
compatible with Photoshop.
3. TYPES OF FILE FORMATS
JPE

PNG PDF GIF
TIF EPS PSD RA
4. WHAT IS A JPEG FILE?
A JPEG is a file format used for storing digital images. It allows you to store
images of good quality, while taking up minimal space. The benefits of JPEGS
are that you can use them in a wider range of software such as Photoshop
and Microsoft Documents. You can use them in any web browser and any
computer can universally view open standard format. It is the perfect format if
you are planning on doing some limited image editing on the computer.
One of the main disadvantages to JPEG are that you can lose image quality
therefore the edges tend to come out blurry. Also JPEG image format is not
capable of handling “JPGs utilize lossy image compression, which helps
conserve file size but reduces the quality of the image”- Digital Manga
Workshop. animated graphic images. The type of design work that you could
use JPEGs for are print, interactive and exhibition.

6. WHAT IS A PNG FILE?
PNG stands for Portable Network Graphics and is saved as a PNG
format. For internet graphics a PNG is a perfect file type and it does not
have any patent restriction and it is ideal for screenshot software,
allowing pixel for pixel reproduction of your desktop environment.
The PNG is the best used for simple graphics like logos and
illustrations. It saves simple graphics as a small file without
compromising the quality of the image. However, PNG can not store
more than one image on the same file, it does not support animation
files and does not work well when saving full coloured images.

8. WHAT IS A GIF FILE?
“ GIF is a file format good for images with monochrome or limited colour palette
as well as animated and transparent images”- Digital Manga Workshop. GIF
stands for Graphic Interchange Format and there are two types. A GIF image and a
Transparent GIF image. The Transparent GIF is the same as a standard GIF except
that a Transparent GIF is an image with no background whilst the standard GIF does
have a background. This is also a Animated GIF image which is the same as a
Transparent GIF except that it is a moving image rather than a static one.
The GIF file is the one of the oldest files being created in the late 80’s so could be
considered outdated and in most cases the file size is bigger than a PNG. The GIF
uses lossless compression and has 256 number of colours. It is also suitable for logos,
flat areas of colour with regions that are well defined. It is also suitable for icons
containing few colours and small animations.
10. WHAT IS A PSD FILE?
A PSD file is Photoshop document a file that is created using a Power
Director program. This is the default format Photoshop uses to save
data due to this, it lets the user edit each layer individually. The files can
contain movies, slideshows, videos etc… It can contain menu setting
such as effects and transitions that can be used to edit videos. The PSD
file tends to be very large which is good because it keep the images in
their original form and is more suited to import/export files such as
Adobe Illustrator. Due to the size of the file, it makes it hard to send this
file format as an email and very few programmes can open/read a PSD
file. If you save this file as a JPEG, TIFF or GIF, you can not convert it
back to a PSD file.

12. WHAT IS A TIFF FILE?
“TIFs preserve alpha channel information, and can be saved in all colour
modes, but, unfortunately, won’t preserve layer data”- Digital Manga
Workshop. TIFF stands for Tag Image File Format and is used for exchanging
raster graphics images between different programs and is one of the most
common graphic image formats. They are mostly used in desktop publishing
and 3-D applications. The TIFF file is does not get compressed so no data
gets lost and it keeps the high quality of the file’s contents. This file format is
larger than similar file formats so it makes it harder to email them and the TIFF
is not supported by most photo sharing website.

14. TIFF VS JPEG
HTTP://HOWTOSCAN.CA/ASSETS/IMAGES/DIFFERENCE-BETWEEN-JPG-TIFF-SCAN2.JPG
TIFF JPEG
Usually a Tiff is a bigger size
than a JPEG which makes them
harder to upload onto the internet
or attach onto E-mails. Due to
the larger file size a TIFF has, as
the file has no compression
100% of the data is saved
meaning the image quality is the
best it can possible be unlike a
JPEG. A TIFF is not supported
on most photo sharing formats
like Facebook and Twitter. Due to
the quality of a TIFF image not
decreasing, it can be used within
formats such as Photoshop for
editing as it will not degrade in
quality during each edit.
Usually a JPEG is a smaller file
size which is perfect to use on
the internet or E-mails. Due to
the smaller file size a JPEG has,
as the file is compressed smaller
the image quality decreases as it
loses some of its image data.
JPEGs do retain a high quality
image just not as high as a TIFF.
A JPEG is supported on nearly
all software types. This includes
Facebook, Twitter and Google
Images. When it comes to editing
the JPEG losses its quality with
each edit unlike the TIFF file.
15. WHAT IS A RAW FILE?
A RAW is used by many top of the range digital cameras. Also the RAW file format is
considered the best type of image file due to the RAW not processing the image which
leaves the image to be controlled. This file format can be edited using Adobe
Photoshop and Corel Paintshop Pro. This file format has no loss of data between the
camera and the file. Also the white balance and colour saturation settings on the
camera can be changed before using editing software like Photoshop and the file size
may be smaller than a TIFF. “Every Detail is in the file for the photographer to
download onto the computer and make adjustments to later”- Collins Complete
Photography Course.
Due to the large file size, it may take longer to take images off the camera and it is
also difficult to work with the images because they need to be converted to a different
file format EG: TIFF. The RAW file format may be made redundant quickly due to the
advancement of the compatible software.
16. AN EXAMPLE OF A RAW

17. RAW VS JPEG
HTTP://UW-PIX.COM/WP-CONTENT/UPLOADS/2015/02/RAW-VS-JPEG-700X380.JPG
RAW JPEG
A Raw file has a higher quality
image than a JPEG before and
after any editing or compression.
Unlike the JPEG, RAW files can
only be used on a very small
range of software which also
needs a computer with high
processing power to edit and
view the image. RAW files also
cannot be Email or uploaded
onto photo sharing websites like
Facebook and Twitter without
editing the file first. The RAW file,
unlike a JPEG file it needs the
user to spend time developing
the file.
Due to the JPEG file being
smaller, less space is taken by
the files but the quality of the
images decreases. However, a
JPEG file is perfect to use on the
internet or E-mails. A JPEG is
supported on nearly all software
types. This includes Facebook,
Twitter and Google Images. A
JPEG file is also hard to correct
mistakes of the exposure and the
colour.
18. WHAT IS A EPS FILE?
EPS stands for Encapsulated Post Script and is an extension of graphic
file formats which are used in veter-based images found in Adobe
Illustrator. The contents of a EPS file can be text, graphics or both and
in most cases contains bit-map which makes viewing simpler than a
vector would.
The EPS file format does not loose image quality and detail when the
detentions of the image size have been altered and this file format is
excepted widely. The EPS is also may contain clipping path and true
font data and a vide verity of metadata. The EPS file format can be
opened by graphic design software packages only.

20. WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN
RASTER AND VECTOR IMAGES?
A raster image is an image which is made up of different
coloured pixels that create the bigger image. The quality of
the image would decrease if the image size were to be
increased as Raster images are resolution dependant unlike
a Vector image. A Vector image is an image which is not
made up of pixels but of basic geometric shapes. This allows
the image quality to stay the same when the image size is
increased.
21. RASTER AND VECTOR IMAGES
HTTPS://WWW.PSPRINT.COM/RESOURCES/DIFFERENCE-BETWEEN-RASTER-VECTOR/
22. APPLICATIONS USED TO CREATE
RASTER AND VECTOR IMAGES
Adobe Photoshop or GIMP are used to create Raster images
as they are perfect for editing photographs as well as adding
effects and textures to the designs. Raster images are mostly
used within web design and print. Adobe Illustrator, Corel
Draw and Inkscape are used to create Vector images. These
Vector images range from logo designs to illustrations and
print work such as brochures and posters.
24. WHAT IS A METAFILE?
A Metafile is a file format that contains Metadata which
describes another file and gives an overview of what the file
contains. For example the details of a photograph. This file
can tell the time and date in which the photograph was taken
as well as the location. Some advanced versions of Metafiles
can pinpoint the location of the image taken within 10 meters.
