The femoral nerve arises from the lumbar plexus and descends between the psoas major and iliacus muscles. It supplies sensation to the front of the thigh and branches into the anterior cutaneous nerve and saphenous nerve. An injury to the femoral nerve can cause paralysis of the quadriceps femoris muscle, resulting in an inability to fully extend the knee. It can also lead to loss of sensation in the front of the thigh and medial side of the leg and foot. Entrapment of the femoral nerve can occur due to a herniated disc in the lower back or at the inguinal ligament in the thigh.
