CHAPTER 8 PROCESS TECHNOLOGY 247
WHAT IS PROCESS TECHNOLOGY?
How operations managers deal with process technology is now one of the most important
decisions that shape the capabilities of operations. This was not always the case, at least not
for all operations. There used to be a simple division between those operations that used a
lot of process technology, usually manufacturing operations, and those that used little or no
process technology, usually service operations. But this is no longer true, and arguably has
not been true for decades. High-volume services have for years understood the value of pro-
cess technology. Online transactions for retail and other services are vital for their success.
Yet even professional services such as legal and medical services can benefit from new and
value-adding technologies (see the section on telemedicine later in this chapter).
So what do operations managers need to know about process technology? It must be
important to them because they are continually involved in the choice, installation and man-
agement of process technology. But operations managers are not (or need not be) technolo-
gists as such. They do not need to be experts in engineering, computing, biology, electronics
or whatever constitutes the core science of the technology. Yet they should be able to do three
things. First, they need to understand the technology to the extent that they are able to articu-
late what it should be able to do. Second, they should be able to evaluate alternative technol-
ogies and share in the decisions of which te.
This document presents a study on tool wear and its relationship to cutting conditions. It designed and conducted a test to better understand how wear affects tool and part geometry during a CNC machining process. The results showed a strong correlation between increased wear and decreased circularity of machined parts. Evidence was also found of the tool flank becoming more stepped as wear progressed. Additionally, the study discovered the test's Taylor constants for tool life were different than typically expected values. The conclusions provide potential directions for future research to help prolong tool life while maintaining manufacturing quality and efficiency.

Enhance VR with in process model for advance personalized learning of cnc pro...Liu PeiLing
Enhance Virtual Reality (VR) for advance personalized learning has been listed as the grand engineering challenge [1]. However, current VR model is not deformable to describe the shape change of manufacturing processes, such as subtractive machining or additive layer manufacturing (LM). Further more, current VR model is not precise enough to simulate the measurement of workpiece, which may go to submicron level. This paper reviewed the current industrial needs of virtual computer numerical control (CNC) training, listed the critical technology issues, traced the 20 years evolution of in-process models of CNC machining, and proposed a new solution. Based on the proposed in-process model, a virtual CNC training system has been developed and used in training courses. Comparisons with conventional on-site manual training and VR based e-learning concluded this new approach could greatly improve safety, increase learning efficiency, and save machine and material.
Advanced manufacturing technology adoption in manufacturing companies in kenyaeSAT Journals
Abstract Over the past few decades, manufacturing has evolved from a more labor-intensive set of mechanical processes to a sophisticated set of information based technology processes. With the existence of various advanced manufacturing technologies (AMTs), more and more functions or jobs are performed by these machines instead of human labour. This study was undertaken in order to research the extent of AMTs adoption in manufacturing companies in Kenya. In order to investigate a survey was conducted via questionnaires that were sent to 183 selected AMT manufacturing companies in Kenya. 92 companies responded positively. All the surveyed companies were found to have a measure of investment in at least two of the 14 types of AMTs investigated. In general the company surveyed showed that the level of AMT adoption in Kenya is very low with investments levels at a mean of 2.057 and integration levels at a mean of 1.639 in a scale of 1-5. The document discusses deburring methods for eliminating chips in the internal tubes of front forks. It aims to develop new techniques to prevent chip formation during machining and modify existing machining processes to optimize cycle times. Currently, additional deburring operations are needed but can damage parts. The authors propose using the coolant pump and adding flushing jets and programs to the CNC machines to clear burrs internally without extra steps. This would increase production from 21,150 to 24,000 parts per month while eliminating labor for deburring. The solutions aim to improve quality, productivity and safety while reducing costs.

STUDY THE EFFECT OF RESPONSE REDUCTION FACTOR ON RC FRAMED STRUCTUREIRJET Journal
This study examines the effect of response reduction factors (R factors) on reinforced concrete (RC) framed structures through nonlinear dynamic analysis. Three RC frame models with varying heights (4, 8, and 12 stories) were analyzed in ETABS software under different R factors ranging from 1 to 5. The results showed that displacement increased as the R factor decreased, indicating less linear behavior for lower R factors. Drift also decreased proportionally with increasing R factors from 1 to 5. Shear forces in the frames decreased with higher R factors. In general, R factors of 3 to 5 produced more satisfactory performance with less displacement and drift. The displacement variations between different building heights were consistent at different R factors. This study evaluated how R factors influence

DEEP LEARNING FOR SMART GRID INTRUSION DETECTION: A HYBRID CNN-LSTM-BASED MODELgerogepatton
As digital technology becomes more deeply embedded in power systems, protecting the communication
networks of Smart Grids (SG) has emerged as a critical concern. Distributed Network Protocol 3 (DNP3)
represents a multi-tiered application layer protocol extensively utilized in Supervisory Control and Data
Acquisition (SCADA)-based smart grids to facilitate real-time data gathering and control functionalities.
Robust Intrusion Detection Systems (IDS) are necessary for early threat detection and mitigation because
of the interconnection of these networks, which makes them vulnerable to a variety of cyberattacks. To
solve this issue, this paper develops a hybrid Deep Learning (DL) model specifically designed for intrusion
detection in smart grids. The proposed approach is a combination of the Convolutional Neural Network
(CNN) and the Long-Short-Term Memory algorithms (LSTM). We employed a recent intrusion detection
dataset (DNP3), which focuses on unauthorized commands and Denial of Service (DoS) cyberattacks, to
train and test our model. The results of our experiments show that our CNN-LSTM method is much better
at finding smart grid intrusions than other deep learning algorithms used for classification. In addition,
our proposed approach improves accuracy, precision, recall, and F1 score, achieving a high detection
accuracy rate of 99.50%.
