This document provides an evaluation template for a Year Two creative media production project. It guides the student through evaluating various aspects of their football fanzine project, including researching football transfers, developing ideas in Photoshop, challenges faced, skills learned, target audience, and areas for improvement. The student rates their final piece as satisfactory/good, noting strong elements like the Manchester City page design but room for improvement such as varying backgrounds and fonts across pages. They identify skills gained in Photoshop and motivation from their topic.
2. Evaluation Overview
This evaluation form is designed to assist you in the evaluation of your projects.
When using this form it is good practice to:
• Use appropriate terminology.
• Stay concise and focus on key points.
• Evaluate and analyse your statements.
• Focus on judgements about work rather than telling a story of how it was made.
Please find the grading matrix here to help you assess you are working at the right level.

3. Project Overview
In this section you will outline the aim of the project/task and give an
overview of the activates you undertook to complete it.
4. What was the theme of your project and
what attracted you to it?
• The theme for my project was football and more crucially about the
transfers in football. I wanted to do a football piece as football is the
biggest sport in the UK with the most views both on TV and match
attendance compared to other main sports, Rugby, Golf, Tennis, F1 etc.
Making a sport fanzine was always going to be the case with having endless
sources to help design and research a well put together fanzine. The theme
came down to football or F1 but with more researchable content I thought
it would be best to do football. Transfers in recent times had drastically
increased so I believed making that the niche topic would be a great idea.
Especially with the recent Manchester City signing of Jack Grealish. Other
than the matches themselves the transfer windows are probably the next
best thing. With Newcastle United getting their takeover last month I
thought it would be a good idea to get one of my good friends and a
lifetime Newcastle supporter and ask him a few questions about what the
for near future holds for the football club.
5. What research did you undertake and how
did it help develop your project?
• For my topic research I used transfermarkt which is a German based
website with every official football transfer. Once on this I researched all
the main transfers in history, such as the Neymar Jr transfer from FC
Barcelona to Paris Saint-Germain. As well as this transfermarkt was very
useful for researching Romelu Lukaku and finding out his exact transfer fee
combination. In terms of existing products, I mainly used to google with
the search as “football fanzine” and used the top ones that looked like it
could have some good features I could implement into my fanzine. I also
used a YouTube video which helped me change a footballer picture into a
cartoon style design. This helped a lot as manipulating images was very
crucial for this piece. I also used YouTube to help me out with the scaling of
the front cover with the ruler feature and how to create an appealing front
cover to attract the target audience. As well of this it helped with finding
out the right size for the fanzine.
6. How did you develop and improve your ideas
throughout the project?
• With the overall look of the fanzine, I believe it was better than my
initial plans as with spending time developing the piece on Adobe
Photoshop, I got more and more familiar with the software and got
more creative with the features on the software. This could be
anything from the border the designs on the Manchester City slide to
the font make on the front cover. As previously stated, YouTube clips
really helped me improve my ideas with the manipulation of football
players with using Poster Edges, Oil Paint features etc.
7. What was the outcome of the project/task?
• The outcome of the project really gave me a better understanding
and determination for my FYP. Mainly from getting more and more
confident with Adobe Photoshop. Meaning be able to make my
production faster which will lead to be able to spend more time on
certain sections that I could have spent more time on. Also learning
new techniques for photo manipulation and shape creations.
8. Personal Response
This section will explore your thoughts and feelings about the
experience. This will help gain a understand of how your personal
feelings may have impacted the final outcome.
9. How did you feel about the project before
you started?
• When the first brief was talked about for the project, I was looking forward
to it as the niche topic could be anything we wanted. So being given that
choose really worked well as, if we had to do a certain topic it could have
let to de motivation and effort put into the project. Having being able to
pick Football as my topic really boosted the knowledge already known from
me. The niche was a toss up of match day experiences, a certain football
club or football transfers. I thought at the time making a football transfer
fanzine would be the best option with Jack Grealish just breaking the
Premier League transfer record gave football a real boost in terms of
football transfers. As well as this before starting production Newcastle
United were in close completion of the new takeover of the club. So, this
gave me ideas of interviewing one of my close friends who is a lifelong
Newcastle supporter.
10. What do you think about your project development and
how did it help you to refine your idea?
• The project development went very smoothly as I knew exactly what I
wanted to do and with all the sources on the internet it was quite
easy to develop a successful structure for my fanzine. One example
that helped me refine my idea was watching a YouTube video on how
to successful structure a fanzine front cover. This helped me gain
knowledge on Photoshop I didn’t know prior to this project.
11. How did you feel when the project was
completed and why?
• Overall, I was pleased with the outcome of my piece as I believe it
was structured well with a right balance of photo to text ratio.
However, things I could improve on is time management as I think
with better planning, I could schedule a better timetable for my piece
giving more time and effort on individual pages.
12. Evaluating the project
In the previous sections, you have been commenting upon the project development. The
evaluation may include some similar information but it will also include critical comment.
An evaluation must include information about the good and bad points of the project and it
is important to be honest. Finally, you should make a judgment about the effectiveness of
the success of the project
13. What were the good points about the project/task and what did you
learn from them? [try and think of at least 3, more if possible]
• The first good point from this task was the right colour scheme for
individual pages, this was helped using coolors.co which is a very easy way
to auto generate colour schemes that work well with each other, and I used
that website for all the pages. So, I will be defiantly using this in my FMP
• Another good point from this task was the making of the images. As I
previously stated the process of turning a stock image into a cartoon style
image. After doing this for all the images I felt it was good for the style of
fanzine I was going for. Using those features will be used in my FMP.
• Another good point from this task was the usage of YouTube as I learnt so
many new things from it and really helped me produce my piece. This will
defiantly be being used for my FMP
14. What challenges did you face and how did you
respond to them? Try and think of at least 3...
• The main challenge that I faced was not knowing exactly how to edit
images from stock to a certain style. Using YouTube videos defiantly
helped me in this.
• Another main challenge was keeping focused and consternated in
lessons for both research and practical work. My response to that
was using earphones to listen to music which helped a lot and using
my free time at home to work on this piece as well.
15. What were the negative points about the
experience, and what could you have done to
improve them?
• The main negative point of my experience with this piece was my
attendance. I can improve this by keeping well and more motivated
with the pieces we are studying.
• Another negative point of my experience with this piece was using
the same background on all my pages. This could be improved with
additional time to free time to develop individual unique backgrounds
for all the pages.
16. How would you rate the final piece? [think along the lines of
poor, satisfactory, good or excellent...justify your rating]
• I would rate my final piece as satisfactory/good. I think the overall
look of the piece and the information on the pages are very good with
surprising stats/information. With the look being quite unique and
original. However, the same background for all the pages except the
front and back cover is a bit of a letdown. As well as this having a
similar title style for the pages as well and not moving from only 1
font style is also a bit of a letdown. But overall, with the piece over I
am defiantly satisfied with what I have completed.
17. What is your opinion of your final piece? What
elements do you think are successful and why?
• I am defiantly proud of the structure of the Manchester City page. It
really works well with the more stand out stats over boring texts
about the team/players.
• I am also satisfied by the Interview page with it having the
appropriate information based on Newcastle working well with the
interview itself and the images.
18. How well did your project apply the characteristics
and conventions of the medium you worked in?
• I believe it worked well with the characteristics and conventions of
the medium as like I stated before it was a good ratio of images to
text so the viewer would never get bored reading the fanzine but
would learn about a certain club/player/record. Also, the colour
scheme worked well with the medium being mostly "football
colours".
19. How did you design appeal to your target
audience?
• With my target audience being a young era of football fans, I made
the content relatable with mostly all current players. As well as giving
the target audience a look at what previously happened in football
with the transfer records. Another way my design appealed to my
target audience was the colour/structure of the pages with it being
bright and good to look at style and not to boring to view.
20. Analysis
In this section, you will focus on the details of the project and make
sense of what happened in the project. You should demonstrate how
your decisions informed the project development and the success of the
outcome.
21. In what ways was the overall project a
success?
• The main success of this piece was getting to use Photoshop a lot and
developing my skills on it. As this has worked well and I believe I am
much more adapt to the programme then beforehand. This is only
going to improve my standard of work and most importantly improve
my FMP.
• Another way this project was a success was the fact I
was researching/developing a piece I was passionate about which
defiantly helped as it kept me motivated and I really enjoyed making
this piece as a whole.
22. What elements did not go well and why?
• The main fault element I had was the understanding of doing proper
research and planning into my piece. This was due to me being over
ambition when it came to my planning as I thought using Photoshop
would be a lot more second nature to me then it was.
23. How did your skills develop during the portfolio? [remember,
skills aren't just technical, remember things like organisation,
time management, communication, etc as well]
• Defiantly the main skill I developed was my overall usage of
Photoshop, having been only working at a restaurant for the past year
I never really used Adobe Photoshop so lost grips with most of the
functions of the programme so doing this piece defiantly jogged my
memory and helped improve it. Another main skill was the
motivation of making this piece. I believe it is one of the most
important elements to have when making anything. Having being able
to make whatever we wanted really worked well with the standard of
my piece.
24. What meaning and messages did you want to
convey and were you successful?
• The main message I wanted my viewers to think of was how messed
up the transfer cost for football players are in present time. I believe it
worked well with talking about previous transfers in the 1900's to
Lukaku combined transfer cost and the Neymar move to PSG.
26. What would you do differently in the future
and why?
• Defiantly try structure more piece my reachable with more realistic
expectations. As the planning didn’t exactly correlate to my end
piece.
• Another thing I would do differently is give myself time more
on everything as there where days where I wasn’t in college which
only weakened my overall piece on the project.
27. What knowledge have you gained that would help you in the
future to improve your project? Also, what knowledge from
academic literature and professionals has helped and why?
• Using transfermarkt really helped with getting the right information
and stats I needed for the piece, such as the correct fee for player
prices for the Manchester City page.
• Also, the knowledge I gained from watching YouTube videos on
working on Adobe Photoshop really helped as it made me think of
ideas I never would have thought about before hand.
28. Action Plan
This section will identify what you would do differently in the future and
identify ways you could develop.
29. If you were making a similar project in the
future, what would you do differently?
• The main difference I would do is try contact a former teacher of
mine who played football for Middlesbrough and even signed for £1m
his name was Andy Cambell. He would be very good to conduct an
interview with as he would be very relatable to this niche topic I was
working on.
• Another difference I would make would be give more time
on the practical sides of things as I believe I may have rushed the last
couple slides; this would help as it would make my overall piece
look more professional and overall look better.
30. How could you develop your skills for future projects? Please
identify the appropriate resources and courses. For example,
webpages, tutorials, books, short courses and qualifications.
• Defiantly I would watch more YouTube videos on any types of
photoshop techniques as personally I find them much easier to follow
and adapt to then reading texts. This is due to it being much more
viewer friendly so very easy to adapt to.
• Another way I could develop my skills is from just doing concepts on
my own and learning from it, for example I made music video posters
and albums about a month ago and the main technique was trial and
error until I was satisfied and helped me develop my skills.
31. What personal attributes could you develop to
ensure you are working at a professional level?
• Concentration in lessons defiantly needs to be improved as I get to
easily destracted using my phone for social media as whenever I get
stuck in a certain scenario, I always resort to thinking going on my
phone for a few minutes will end up working well with thinking of
new ideas.
• Also attendance would defiantly need to be improved if I wanted to
work at a professional level as this will be key to making my pieces
better
