Exponents, also called powers or indices, indicate how many times a number is used as a factor in a multiplication. For example, 82 means 8 × 8 = 64, where the exponent 2 tells us to multiply 8 by itself twice. In general, an exponent tells us to multiply the base number a by itself n times, where n is the exponent. Exponents provide an easier way to write repeated multiplications like 96 rather than writing out 9 × 9 × 9 × 9 × 9 × 6. Negative exponents indicate how many times to divide one by the base number.

5. What if the Exponent is 1, or 0?
if the exponent is 1, then you just have
the number itself (example 91 = 9)
If the exponent is 0, then you get 1
(example 90 = 1)
But what about 00 ? It could be either 1 or
0, and so people say it is "indeterminate".

6. Be Careful About Grouping
With () : (ab)2 = ab × ab
Without () : ab2 = a × (b)2 = a × b × b
Examples
With () : (-2)2 = (-2) × (-2) = 4
Without () : -22 = -(22) = - (2 × 2) = -4
