SCIENTIFIC NOTATION
is a system of notation used to express very
large or very small numbers conveniently. It
uses exponents so as not to require the use of
many zeros which can be confusing and lead to
errors.
A scientific notation is written in the form ,
……... where . It is written
as a number from 1 through 9 multiplied by
10 raised to the appropriate exponent.

The distance of the earth from the sun is approximately
93 000 000 miles. Write this distance in scientific
notation.
93 000 000
The original number
is greater than 1,
so the exponent is
positive.
93 000 000 = 9.3
Solution:
10

Write 0.00000000734 in scientific notation.
0.00000000734
The original number
is less than 1, so
the exponent is
negative.
0. 00000000734 = 7.34
Solution:
x 10

Write 4.7 x 10 in decimal form or standard form.
4.7
Since, the given
exponent of 10 is
positive ,move the
decimal point to the
right.
4.7 x 10 = 470 000 000
Solution:
0000000
The positive exponent
indicates a large
number.

Write 2.51 x 10 in decimal form or standard
form.
2.51
Since, the given
exponent of 10 is
negative ,move the
decimal point to the
left.
2.51 x 10 = 0. 000251
Solution:
