Feminism In Bram Stoker s Dracula
The novel Dracula by Bram Stoker is seen to be a part of feminist literature. Stoker s
story tells the tale of multiple characters, through Jonathan and his ordeal at
Transylvania where he first encounters Dracula. He meets Dracula to buy him a new
estate in England. However, when he stays at the castle, he realizes something wrong
with Dracula. Stoker laters shifts the novel to Mina and Lucy s perspective, writing
to each other about light hearted things. However, it takes a turn for the worst as he

In the Victorian era, there was a movement of feminism and the women who were

When I met my former fiancГ©, we were both in grad school at a very good
program, working on a mix of loans, grants, and small scholarships to make it

In the antebellum era of America, which is the time before America s civil war,
there was a call for justice and liberty. The American Revolution had ended a few
years ago, the new Constitution was in place, and arguments about slavery began.
Abolitionists were demanding that slaves be freed while most of the American
population could not decide what to do or said no. This sparked another argument
and fight, women s rights. Religious reasons were being tossed back and forth
between the fight of elevating a womans status or keeping her where she is. Women
of this time wanted to elevate their status, or change their sphere, from being

African Americans after slavery but since then diversity has increased over time. Not
only is there still activism for racial equality among African Americans, but also for

Throughout time, historians have relied on first person encounters to accurately
depict the world and the people at a certain time. Cotton Mather s, The Wonders of
the Invisible World, does exactly that by giving the reader a perspective into the
Salem witch trials as well as a first person view from Mather himself. Through this
work, Mather shares his opinions on the actions taken in the trials and the works of
the Devil and God inside of New England. During this time period, religion played a
significant part in society such that it was a driving force behind the hysteria created.
This hysteria doesn t seem to reach Mather, but rather he seems to be compelled to
write due to his pre existing concern for society against the Devil and witchcraft....

In the early 19th century a man by the name of Phineas Taylor Barnum changed
popular culture with his extraordinary talent of promoting and advertising. His first
success came with a slave woman known as Joice Heath who he claimed to be the
nurse of George Washington. If this was true it would put Joice at 161 years old,
thousands of people went to see The greatest natural and national curiosity in the
world (Perlman 4/6/16) which turned Joice from an elderly woman to a national
spectacle. I believe that the portrayal of women in 19th century popular culture has
prevented the detachment of gender roles and has actually created confusion in the
eyes of the masses. I will start by comparing the Turkish Dance, Ella Lola which is
a short film of a woman dancing made in 1898 with 1850s megastars Madame
Clofullia and Jenny Swedish Nightingale Lind, then I will compare the film to the
New Women of Barnum and Bailey as well as early 20th century women. In order
to fully understand my argument it is necessary to analyze the film by itself. The

happy, and do it because everything else is all just background noise. George Mason
often spoke powerful words and made decisions that would go on to affect one of the
government s most powerful documents. Being delegate to the Constitutional
Convention of 1787, Mason s refusal to sign the Constitution would only be the start
of his impacts and contributions to the United States. The Articles of Confederation
was the first drafted and documented constitution of the United States. Under these
laws and articles, the states remained dominant and independent with Congress
serving as the last resort to make variations. This document also gave Congress the
right to create treaties and allies, maintain armed forces and coined money. Although
Congress had much authority to make vital decisions, the central government lacked
the ability to standardize commerce and levy taxes. These inabilities to maintain a
constant flow of power and dominance ultimately led to the 1787 Constitutional
Convention to draft a new set of federal laws and provisions.
Who is George Mason? George Mason was a self educated American born in
Virginia in 1725 to George and Ann Thomson Mason. Mason and his family lived
on a Fairfax County Plantation. While Mason was just a young boy, his father
succumbed to illnesses sustained from a boating accident. Unfortunately, Mason s
mother was left to raise three children alone; however, Mason was able to obtain his
inheritance at a young age and create a legacy of his own.
In 1787, Mason agreed to be a delegate to the Constitutional Convention held in
Philadelphia. Prior to accepting his delegate position, Mason had been active in the
Virginia Convention in 1775. Although not frequently mentioned, George Mason
essentially authored the Virginia Declaration of Rights, which would ultimately serve

from American Community Survey 1 Year Estimates for the years 2006, 2009 and
2012 w.r.t. 203 Metropolitan Statistical Areas (MSA) in United States of America.
These MSA have been selected as the most populated MSA in USA for the year 2012.
The most populous MSA in USA included a few MSA from Puerto Rico and
Alaska and was removed to focus only on Mainland USA. It was also observed that
most of the MSA when plotted on the map of USA are in East USA (155 MSA).
Montana and Wyoming did not have any MSA among these 203 MSA. For the
purpose of this report, Microsoft Excel and Tableau where used to store, clean and

Many college students today might say, Stick and stones may break my bones, but
words really offend me, so you can t say that. These students would be wrong
legally to prevent others from freely speaking their minds in public, but in a college
classroom they would be awarded.
Censoring is not only in college classrooms, but in high school classrooms as well.
It impedes on a student s ability to develop and learn, hinders their ability to prepare
for the modern day world. Although clichГ©, and very sadly so, it is very apparent
that today there is almost nothing that can be said that offends nobody. Thick skins
have been replaced with fragile minds, and college students do not even know the
extent of the first amendment. However, these same students believe they have the
right to interpret the amendment their own way, and some believe they have the right
to become the judiciary system if the speech doesn t appeal to them.
When determining an opinion on any argument, it is important to start with the facts.
In a survey taken by John Villasenor, forty percent of college students surveyed
believe that hate speech is not protected by the first amendment, and twenty percent
believe violence used to stop hate speech is acceptable. All those students are wrong.
Hate speech is protected by the first amendment, and using violence as justification
for ending hate speech is not legal.
While not everyone in society has to be a constitutional expert, college students today
are tomorrow s future lawyers, judges, police officers, etc. They need to at least know
the extent of the first amendment in the United States. Additionally, these students
should know that since hate speech is protected, responding with violence is by no

the determinants of health which often occur within this area. According to Know
Fife Dataset Abbeyview s current population is 7,179, this population is broken
down in to three categories children, working age and pensionable age. Abbeyview
population is 20% children, 64.5% working age and 15.5% pensionable age
(Know Fife Dataset, n.d. a). Abbeyview is a small area in the east of Dunfermline

presidential nominee, William Jennings Bryan, flew a new flag; that of the democrats.
