- As an ever-greater share of economic and customer value is delivered through digital services, data centers are fueling our digital economy. Today’s enterprise for example…88% of workloads and 80% + of spend is accounted for…Leaving little room for innovation. Leveraging cloud is a path to rationalizing cost out and striking the right balance. Security and control continue to be natural sticking points, Equinix can help address.
- Focusing in on data, there are many aspects the Enterprise needs to solve for: Data Growth: Key variables are data volume (how much), variability (number of types of data) and velocity (the speed of data processing). At Equinix, the Ad-IX allows advertising participants to quickly analyze the ad opportunity and bid in real time. Sovereignty & Compliance: Are country specific regulations requiring that data must not leave the point from which is originated. What is made in Germany must stay in Germany. On October 6, 2015 the European Court of Justice invalidated the US/EU Data Transfer Pact. “The so-called safe harbor agreement was flawed because it allowed American government authorities to gain routine access to Europeans’ online information.” Integrated Cloud: A key concern of Enterprises is vendor lock-in. CSPs typically make it easy to migrate (free ingress) but hard to leave (cost to egress). With large data sets, accessing CSPs over the Internet becomes problematic as well as expensive vs direct, proximate interconnection.
- Availability of the data center is fundamental. As we live in a 24/7/365 world, we need the data center to be always on, every day, all the time. In a world where mobile devices are the new standard interface to IT Systems, we need to ensure a quality experience for the user or customer experience In a global world we need to be ready for growth and scale. To energize productivity for birds-of-feather companies and organizations, we need to have common place for buyers and sellers to exchange data, information and transact. As the Hybrid IT Model emerges as a new norm, we need to enable the journey to the hybrid-cloud.
- Background: As covered in our discussion on Interconnection Oriented Architecture there are 3 main challenges associated with disruption: Market challenges: shifting from cost take out to growth; global competition and growing to new markets & locations; M&A Business challenges: Shift from a product to a product and service company; Omni-channel to engage your partners, customers and employees; workplace is becoming virtualized Technology challenges: SMAC (social, mobile, analytics, cloud); Internet of Things; Real-time collaboration => all change business processes This disruption is leading to a transformation of the business architecture and the need to become an interconnected Enterprise Where you are able to: Respond instantly via any channel Growth via digital ecosystems Make real time decisions Innovate quickly
