HOW DID YOU ATTRACT/ADRESS YOUR AUDIENCE?
I thought about a range of specificfeatureson my magazine that wouldassist in making my
magazine successful.
LANGUAGE: I usedinformal language to address my audience;usinginformal language in my
magazine allows my readers to connect to the magazine in a casual and relaxingway. Due to my
audience beingof a young age usinga sort of ‘chatting’ language in my magazine my target market
will be able to understand betterthan usingvery formal language. This style oflanguage also
keepsthe text/articlesmore excitingand interestingthisage group will be able to appreciate and
enjoythe articlesmore. I usedsome buzzwordsand slang inmy magazine this may encourage my
target audience to read and/or buy my magazine as there are words theyrecognise and can relate
to.
FONT: I useda variety of fontsthroughout my magazine; all the fonts are very bold, vibrant and of
a large size this is so that it stands out from other competingmagazinesand is eye catching. I
chose these text fonts due to them beingsimilarto fontsused on other multi-genre magazines.
Usingsimilar fontsgivesme many advantages such as my audience will already have a connection
with these stylesof fontswith these genres.
The textfonts are very aestheticespeciallytothis age group, the textfront also added to the
informalityof the language and the magazine overall.
CONTENTS: the contentsof my magazine reflectthe answers/informationI receivedfrommy
survey; I includedan exclusive interviewwithnewand up comingsingers. This interviewincluded
informationon subjectssuch as theirtours, the new updateson their newCD etc. Interviewsalso
allow my readersto feel more connectedwiththe artist themselfas the interviewisdirect from
the artist straight to the reader. I feel that usingan interviewwitha famousgroup wouldbe very
successful withthis age group; firstlybecause I decidedthisfrom the surveyin which they
answered,secondlybecause
IMAGES: I usedteenage subjectsin my images;I decidedtodo this due to my audience being
teenagers/youngadults.People ofthis age tend to relate/connect better withpeople of similar
age. The subjectsin my imagesare making eye contact with my audience;I chose to use this
technique due to research of otherpopular magazines where theyall usedthis technique. All the
imageswithin my magazine are of a large scale this attracts my audiencesattentionthe images
will also be one of the firstfeatureson a page that my audience noticestherefore will have to be
successful, aestheticand interestingphotograph. The image on the front cover and contents page
will give my audience an indicationof what will be includedwithinthe magazine. The subjectsin
my images are wearingfashionable and up to date clothing whichis what a large majority of this
age group admire.
MASTHEAD: ‘OVERLOAD’ the title of my magazine.I locatedthis in the top lefthand corner of the
front cover this isdue to people readingfrom leftto right therefore this will be the first feature
that people notice.Alsowhenmagazinesare on the shelfthe right hand side of the magazine will
be covered.I useda bright blue colour for the masthead on a white background. Bright colours like
this are very appealingto this age group and are very eye catching. I used a unique font for the
masthead and the main cover line, thiswill be usedcontinuallyfor all ‘OVERLOAD’ magazines
howeverthe otherfonts will change. This allowsme to build up a brand image for ‘OVERLOAD’
and people will be able recognise the brand easier.
CHOICE OF REPRESSENTATION: I chose to add advertisementsandimportant information that
wouldbe relatedto my target market that my magazine is aimed at. The advertisementsinmy
magazine reflectthings that my audience wouldenjoytaking part in for example festivals,
concerts etc and/or thingsthat theywould be interestedininvestingin. Alsothe subjectsand use
of mise-en-scene inmyimagesrepresentsmy audience successfullythe attire for example is
similarto what people ofthat age group wouldwear.
LAYOUT: I useda very simple layouton my front cover; the text was spaced equallyaround the
image.Whenthe elementsare spread equallyacross the page it is more aestheticto look at. I
triedto keepthe image as clear as possible withonlyvery little writinggoing over the image. The
image is one of the most interestingfeatureson the magazine people tendto want to be able to
see the image clearly. Also will text overthe image the front cover becomesuntidyand
unprofessional, won’tbe appealingto my target market. I used differentlevelsinthe composition
of my image one subjectis stood one is kneltdown this worked quite well it makes the visual
elementslookequal and more professional butthe gesturesof the subjects make the magazine
look more ‘relaxed’.
I tried to focus on keepingthe magazine unisex throughout my magazine; thismeant I would get
attentionfrom both a female and male audience which keepsmy target audience wider. However
the colour scheme I usedmay appear more feminine due to thembeingvery bright colours on a
white background thismay give the impressionthat the magazine isaimed at the female gender.
Usingmore neutral colourswould have workedmore successfullytomake the appearance of the
magazine look more unisex.Alsowith it beingboth feminine subjectsonthe front cover this may
also discourage the masculine audience to investin the magazine. In my planningI did decide to
use a female subjecton the front coverbecause it will attract femalesas theywill aspire to be like
the subjectand males may findthe subject/subjectsattractive or just be interestedintheirmusic.
HoweverI plannedto have a masculine subjecton my double page spread so that the magazine
doesn’tappear to be one sided.Howeverwhenundertakinga couple of shoots, the most
successful imageswere of female subjects. The mise-en-scene,the gesturesetclinkedinwell with
the theme of the magazine.
I think I have successfullytakeninformationand knowledge frommy research and effectively
appliedsome of these techniquesand featuresto my final designfor my magazine to make it
appealingto my target market.
