The document provides details on the planning for a music magazine pitch. It outlines the working title ("EMBERS"), genres of music to be included (indie, alternative, chart, rock, country, jazz, soul), planned monthly publication schedule and cost (£4-4.50). It includes style sheets for fonts, layouts and color schemes for the front cover, contents page and double page spread. A reader profile, mission statement and digital dummies of sample pages are also presented to outline the vision for the magazine.

2. INTRODUCTION TO
MY PITCH
After having completed my Audience Research, I am beginning the planning of my music magazine. From
the data I have already collected from questionnaire responses and interview answers, I need to outline the
basics of what my magazine will be like and why I chose to do this. This includes the discussion of my
working title, the genre of music I intend on including, the price I would charge for the magazine if it was to
be officially published and the style and attitude I want it to have. All of these factors will contribute to how
my final product will be produced and it will work as a base in which my initial ideas will be displayed. In
addition to this I will create a reader profile for my magazine and the purpose of this is to provide a fiction
but example person who would be interested in reading my magazine. This allows the reader to determine
if my magazine is suited to their taste. Furthermore, I will create a mission statement that will inform
companies that might want to advertise in my magazine, what it’s purpose is and it’s style and attitude. I
will also include a style sheet which will contain the colours, text types, layout and style I will use for my
magazine. By hand and on the computer, I will do a Dummy plan of what I would like my Front Cover,
Contents Page and Double Page Spread to look like in terms of layout and colours etc and I plan to attach
annotations with these.
All of these can been seen on the following slides…
3. WORKING
TITLE
The purpose of having a working title during the planning stage, prior to the final production of
a magazine, is to get ‘a feel’ and idea of the possible title ideas you have. This can change as you
may develop the style or content you have chosen to include. The title that I am currently
working with is “EMBERS” magazine.
My reason for this choice of name is quite alternative. The definition of an ember is a piece of
wood or coal that continues to burn after the fire has no flame. In relation to my music
magazine, I want this to portray that music is continuous and timeless. Not only will it
appeal to avid music fans, it doesn’t particularly target a niche market which is very
important when you’re advertising your product to attract a wide range of people with
different music tastes and preferred genres. The unisex title doesn’t favourably appeal to
one gender.
In terms of the typography and fonts that I may choose to present my title, I have two trialling styles. While both of the examples have
sans serif typography, in attempt to provide more of a trendy and modern appearance to attract the majority audience of teenagers and
young people, they are both quite different. The top one is quite simplistic yet stylistic however, the bottom one is more playful and
diverse, so maybe this is more suited to target a selection of youthful people.
4. GENRE OF
MUSIC
When reflecting on the research I have gathered, both from my online questionnaire and my
interviews, it is apparent that there are many people who listen to large range of music,
covering a variety of genres. From my further research that I carried out before audience
research, I have noticed that there is a huge gap in the market for magazines that covers a
widespread of music styles, Q magazine being the only one that provides a diverse
selection. An advantage of this in terms of selling, is that there will be little competition.
For this reason, I have decided that my product will offer a range. A few examples are
indie/alternative for our more eccentric characters, chart music for youngsters, rock for
those who love to listen to something heavy, country music for our cowboys and cowgirls
and finally a splash of jazz and soul for some feel good music. This will in turn attract an
assortment of the public. As mentioned previously, the title “EMBERS” doesn’t indicate that
the magazine is genre specific. Another advantage of creating a magazine encompassing
all/most of the genres, is that there can be a variety of different article styles, images and
interactive features which wouldn’t be on offer if I was restricted to one genre.
5. FREQUENCY AND COST OF
PUBICATION
The item that I will produce will be published monthly, meaning that the issue will consist of approximately 130-140
pages. The advantage of this being that I can incorporate a variety of text formats and styles, including : reviews,
articles, interviews, picture spreads and feature specials covering all the genres that I choose to embrace. I would like
to release my magazine at the end of each month with the idea of reviewing all the music that has been issued that
month and to give my clientele an idea of what is coming up in the following month. This may consist of tours, album
and or song releases, news of a music artist and up and coming events. In terms of the monthly production, it will
allow the quality of the paper and additional features to be of a higher standard because the magazine is released less
frequently, it will be viable to spend more money on the quality of the issue rather than frequency of the issue.
Hopefully, this will be an attraction to our target audience of most ages, young people in particular interested in the
aesthetics of the magazine and the appealing for all music tastes.
After analysing my audience research, in particular the survey I published, I have gathered that the majority of the
sample would prefer to pay within £1-£3, however, this is not feasible when producing a high quality monthly
magazine as I will need to charge slightly more to cover the costs of production. The rest of the sample where happy
to pay between £4-£7 for my issue. Due to the result of these findings, I will charge between the values of £4-£4.50 in
attempt to please a majority of my buyers.

Reviewing my choice of text
styles for my cover page, it is
evident that the colour scheme is
simply black and white. The
purpose of this being that I am
going to shoot my group shot for
the page with a coloured light gel
filter and I would like the text to
be very prominent against the
background colour. The variety of
fonts have been selected from
dafont.com and the normal
Microsoft menu. The Masthead is
very bold and quirky which works
contrastingly against the
coverlines, which remain more
simplistic.

Looking at the fonts I have
chosen, it is apparent that they
are black and white to keep
consistency throughout. The
purpose of this is to remain
neutral to any specific
connotation attached to any
specific genre, since I am
producing a multi-genre
magazine. The fonts are fairly
minimalistic with a simple detail
added to the typography of the
Masthead enhancing it’s
dominance on the page. Generally
the text is written in a san serif
manner keeping the style of the
magazine mainly modern.

OVERALL…
In summary the fonts continue to follow a
similar pattern as mentioned previously,
remaining mutual to any particular
provoking emotion or vibe because of the
black and white colour scheme. The
Masthead chosen for my double page
spread has a very simple initial font with
a boxing detail which simply emphasises
the title. The article text typography is
extremely basic and the purpose of this is
to not to detract from the image that will
be on the opposite page of the spread.
The font is black to stand out from the
neutral background I plan to have and it is
well spaced a to ensure it is easily
readable for all audiences.
9. STYLE AND ATTITUDE
For my magazine, I plan to incorporate lots of different elements to compliment all the different genres I will be covering. I would
like for these elements to be traditional in their physicallity, however, I would like for the presentation of these, to challenge
conventions.
In terms of the style, it will hopefully represent a neutral yet unique fashion unlike some multi genre magazines I have analysed in
the research of my project. To aid this, I must think about the colour scheme that will be continued throughout and I plan for this to
be purple, representing a sense of luxury yet ambition. I hope this simple stylistic feature will transmit a similar vibe of comfort and
motivation to the readers of “EMBERS” magazine.
Regarding the attitude of my product, I want a sense of sincerity to be delivered but again, it will need to remain impartial to any
over-powering emotions. An example of this could be an atmosphere of aggression which is often depicted in Rock or heavy metal
magazines.
The text fonts I have collected and put in a style sheet presented previously, are quite simple with minor detailing to attract the eye
of my audience. Any coverlines I plan to use will be minimalistic and almost subordinate to the trendy masthead of the cover page
and the main image.
10. FLAT PLAN OF THE CONTENTS OF MY
MAGAZINE IS ON A SEPARATE DOCUMENT-
EXCEL
11. DUMMIES-hand drawn version
Cover Page
This is my hand drawn plan for the front page of my music magazine, Embers, as demonstrated on
the right hand side. Displayed at the top of the page is the masthead with an imitation of the font I
have chosen which is presented in my style sheet further up.
Beneath the Masthead will be the cover-line positioned on the far left third of the page so that it is
prominent for the reader to engage with. Similarly, the font and text has been clarified in my style
sheet previously shown.
The photo I plan to use will be a studio shot of three males modelling as a indie band. My very basic
drawings demonstrate how I intend for my models to be positioned and what props will be part of
my studio shot and the set. This will be clarified in my photography planning later on.
On the far right third, will be placed a few brief and simple coverlines, to inform the reader of what
will be present in the current issue. When analysing my research, I was quite fond of the November
issue of Mixmag magazine and tried to replicate that quite similarly but it is very difficult to tell at
this stage. I will present the comparison at a later stage with my digital version.
12. DUMMIES-hand drawn version
Contents Page
On the right hand side is my drawing plan for Contents Page. As illustrated, the masthead, is positioned at
the top of the page, commencing on the left hand third and this feature I have incorporated, like on the
front page, has not particularly challenged any conventions of a magazine. The month of the issue will be
present, closely positioned next to the masthead.
Beneath this, will be the contents of my magazine listed with the page numbers that will also correspond
with my flat-plan. It will be structured so that it is placed in the dominant third on the left to capture the
immediate reading attention of the reader.
The group of photos on the right will show the reader what artists are included in the Embers magazine,
visually. These photos will be decided and the camera work will be planned in my photography planning.
Underneath that, I intend on having a short article displayed to encourage my audience to buy he
magazine for further reading.
13. DUMMIES-hand drawn version
Double Page Spread
The Double Page Spread from Mixmag also sparked my interest and I tried to
imitate some of the quirky presentations . I will make a visual comparison between
the one I analysed in my research and my digital dummy. The headline/masthead
will be split between two different sides and ends of the double page spread to
lengthen the dominance of my title across the entirety of my article. Also a
coverline will be present above part of the title on the second page.
On the left hand side, I plan to have a large photograph and in terms of camera
work, the photo taken will be close up, side profile of the subject in which I am
writing about. Beside that, will be a collection of approximately four images that
will be related to the article significantly.
The article itself will be located on the right page in a traditional, simple column
format, however the widths of these columns will not be even in order to stray
from all magazines conventions.
14. DUMMIES-digital version
Front Page
These are my digital dummies which provide a very basic idea of
what I intend the end product to vaguely replicate. I was limited
with the edits I could do with images, fonts etc on the publisher
software, but it is still evident that the basic elements for
example the Masthead, the image, the main coverline plus
others are shown.
Very amateur edits have been put in place to give a very vague
idea of how I would like to adopt a similar style of the Mixmag
magazine. Whilst it is not a multi-genre magazine, the colours
used, black, white and purple as well as the mis-en-scene of the
photograph, promote very neutral style which gives me a lot of
scope to present that this magazine will be one of many genres.
15. DUMMIES-digital version
Contents Page
This page has been created from scratch without any major influence from the contents pages I
analysed in my research done previously. The purple hue of the background will be continued
throughout the magazine to keep consistency of style of the magazine.
The mis-en-sen of the picture I plan to mimic, is focused yet quite neutral which achieves my
aim to produce a multi-genre product.
At the top of the page is the Masthead which clearly informs the reader of its purpose and
beneath will the list of contents that are within this issue of ‘EMBERS’, as demonstrated by the
basic box outlined.
On the side of that will be an assortment of images that are related to the artists featured on
this page. To ensure I am constantly sticking to my plan of producing an varied genre magazine, I
will guarantee that this page presents the wide range that I declare my magazine has to offer.
At the bottom of the page, there will be a snapshot article and image to entice my reader to
proceed.
16. DUMMIES-digital version
Double Page Spread
The double page spread will be the final thing I will create in the production of my music issue.
Again, I have displayed one of Mixmag’s double page spreads as I intend to feature some
similar details in my end product.
I very much liked the separation of the title and their way of challenging simple conventions. It
also will be very reflective of my article I plan to write – about how an artist separates with his
alternative, indie band to become a solo artist. Aesthetically, it broadens the focus across the
whole page which will hopefully encourage the reader to be drawn to this article which is
competing against others within magazine.
As mentioned previously, the purple shade will be pursued to sustain continuity. The subject of
the article will dominate the left page with the camera work discussed previously applied.
Next to that will be a collection of other images in relation to the text shown on the right page.
This text will be organized in a regular column format so that it is easily readable for the
majority of our large target audience.
17. READER PROFILE As part of my audience
research that I have
completed, an element that
is part of many music
magazines is the reader
profile. The purpose of this
being published in the issue,
is to allow the audience to
get “a feel” for what type of
person would read it, their
characteristics, interests and
most importantly their music
tastes and choices.
18. MISSION STATEMENT
Exploring all music…
Our mission is to encourage a new ear for listening to the unheard sounds that surround us.
Whether it be rock, pop, classical, indie or jazz, we can provide a sight and content for all. We
want all stages in our generation to appreciate what is going on in the world of music, known and
unknown, big or small names.
We would hate do half a job, so employing the cream of fellow media experts is at our best
interest; alongside getting to the root of the most enlivening and stimulating stories and music out
there for our largely sparse audience to relish in. With our partnership with Radio 1, our
contemporary website and our dynamic social media channels, we reach nearly one million
music fans each month!
Fortunately, the refined crew are well equipped and are desperate to share our knowledge with
anyone who wants a friendly and informative guide for buying the best records, for hearing the
best tunes and for absorbing our ever developing music culture.
To complete a music
magazine, like most
magazines, I have
constructed a mission
statement to discuss what I
my magazine’s aims and
goals are. The purpose of
this is to ensure and inform
the readers of what the
magazine attempts to
deliver generally and
specifically in each issue.
19. PHOTOGRAPHY
PLANNING
COVER PAGE
GROUP SHOT
CAMERA WORK
Demonstrated on the left hand side is a group studio shot of a music band. This
is the closest example I could get to illustrate how I plan to shoot my cover
page image. My indie band, “The Commas” will be arranged with musical
equipment in place, similarly shown in the chosen shot and I would also like a
light gel filter so that the background could have some colour, considering
purple or green as they are quite calm, neutral colours which won’t reflect any
particular genre. As this frame has been taken in a landscape orientation and I
need my cover page shot to be portrait, I intend on positioning my members a
little differently, embracing different levels and I will take my shot from a
further distance in order to ensure it will fit to the right orientation.
SET/LOCATION
Evidently, the photograph I have chosen as an example has been taken in a
studio. I plan to do the same, taking advantage of the college’s own studio
facilities. It is usually a general magazine convention, particularly of magazines
presenting entertainment ie. Music, for the front cover page to illustrate a
studio shot. It is clean and allows the producers to add finer details to
complete their end product.
20. PHOTOGRAPHY
PLANNINGCOVER PAGE – Mis-en-senLIGHTING
In terms of lighting, I will be using the college studio and facilities,
so a neutral white background will be set up against a white
screen with high-key lighting.
If it would be possible, I would like to use a purple coloured gel
filter to give the final photograph, that I use for my cover page,
colour which I would like to keep consistent in my magazine. The
choice of purple has been discussed previously.
COSTUMES The costumes I would like my
models who are posing as an
‘Indie Band’ to wear would be
similar to the ones shown on
the left. Very relaxed and trendy
to accompany the genre of
music they produce.
ATTITUDE
When arranging my models, I must think about what style and attitude I want to portray
considering the band on the cover page is of an alternative genre and I must consider that
my magazine is a multi-genre issue. I want my models to be positioned in a close proximity
to demonstrate a sense of focus and tension among the members of the group. Also, I plan
to use different levels to add a dynamic element to the frame which will hopefully in turn
symbolise and represent the dynamic attitude I wish to depict in this one shot.
PROPS To accompany the costumes, I
plan to incorporate music
related props to enhance my
studio shot of the Indie band.
Guitars will definitely be
included.
21. PHOTOGRAPHY
PLANNINGCONTENTS PAGE
TWO SHOT
CAMERA WORK
As shown on the left, I plan for my main contents page image to be a
two shot modelling as a new modern rock duo. I would like the
photograph to be taken so that a medium shot is created, capturing
the posture and attitude of my modelling pair I plan to use. In terms
of production when I am editing my material, it is important that this
image is not over dominating because the purpose of a contents page
is to introduce the variety of artists that my magazine will have to
offer; not to focus on one. In order to ensure this, I plan to edit the
image, turning down the opacity and to take the photo in the studio
for the blank canvas in which I can guarantee a more neutral final
product.
SET/LOCATION
It is difficult to see with the blurred image I
have displayed, but the photograph I have
chosen as an example has been taken in a
studio, however with a dark back drop. I
plan to also use a studio, although with a
white back drop taking advantage of the
college’s facility. As mentioned previously,
this in order to aid my production plans
during the editing stage of my coursework.
Something like this:
22. PHOTOGRAPHY
PLANNINGCONTENTS PAGE – Mis-en-sen
LIGHTING
Regarding the lighting I would like to have, I will be using the college studio and
facilities, so a neutral white background will be set up against a white screen with
high-key lighting.
If it would be possible, I would like to use a purple coloured gel filter to give the final
photograph, , that I use for my cover page, colour which I would like to keep consistent
in my magazine. The choice of purple has been discussed previously.
COSTUMES + PROPS
When I take the photographs of my
models, I would like them to be wearing
black clothes to clearly replicate a rock
nature, however, this duo will be
presenting a new style of rock. The ‘mesh’
fabric and sight of skin, will portray a sense
of elegance and femininity which are not
the most common connotations attached
to the rock genre. But to support the rock
style I want to portray, I would like the two
shot to feature an electric guitar to ensure
the genre reinforcement and to accompany
conventions.
ATTITUDE
When arranging my models, I must think about what style and attitude I want to
portray considering the duet that will be displayed will be of a new rock genre and I
must consider that my magazine is a multi-genre issue. I want my models to be
positioned in a close proximity to demonstrate the close relationship between the
girls, physically and musically. Also, I would like for models not to be focused on the
camera, looking elsewhere perhaps. The aim of this small detail will be to create a
more dynamic yet casual end product that will be the background of my contents
page. The advantage of this is while it is only demonstrating one group out of the
many genres it will have to offer, it is not over zealous, supporting my multi-genre
intentions and conventions I will aim to include.
23. PHOTOGRAPHY
PLANNINGDOUBLE PAGE SPREAD
SIDE PROFILE CLOSE UP SHOT
CAMERA WORK
For my double page spread article, I will be writing about a member of a band who decides to go solo so an
intimate close up shot of the main subject of my article would highlight his significance amongst the others
mentioned in the piece. When production arrives, like the photo shown on the left, I would like for the photo to
be edited similarly with a classic black and white filter put in place.
SET/LOCATION
It is difficult to see where the photo I have presented as an example has been taken, but the photo I will be
taking will be in a studio. I plan to also use a studio with a white back drop taking, advantage of the college’s
facility. The purpose of using this is so that I have a blank canvas in which the model’s presence will be the
complete focus of the image, no scenery of location which would detract from that.
24. PHOTOGRAPHY
PLANNINGDOUBLE PAGE SPREAD-Mis-en-
sen LIGHTING
Regarding the lighting I would like to have, I will be using the college studio and
facilities, so a neutral white background will be set up against a white screen with
high-key lighting.
This choice of lighting will be dynamic and refining for the model, hopefully
highlighting the artist’s facial features and attitude.
COSTUMES
When the production
commences, I have a plan
for what I would like my
model to wear for this
specific shot. Due to the
subject being an ex band
member of an indie band,
his look will be very
quirky with a alternative
looking jumper or shirt to
represent his taste in
music.
ATTITUDE
The attitude of this photograph will be very significant to the piece that I will be
writing. I aim for the model to be demonstrating a facial expression of great
sincerity, similar to the mood and attitude created by the model example on the
left.
25. COPYWRITING – DPS
ARTICLE…Former band member of THE COMMAS, Flynn Wilder, has made the conscious decision to CHANGE STATES, change music and change
his life. Not only has our ex indie troop re-identified himself as an up and coming solo jazz artist, he has moved from the countryside
of North Carolina, where he was based with his Indie band, to move to live the ‘high-life’ with girlfriend Grace Walters in the liveliness
of Los Angeles.
While girlfriend Grace, was partly lodging with her roommate just outside LA, she was also staying with Flynn on romantic weekends
and special holidays. However last Christmas, Wilder spent his favourite holiday with the potential in-laws back in Grace’s hometown
and this sparked a possible new taste of living for him. As part of tradition, on Christmas Eve, the couple and her folks ventured to
their local jazz bar upstate for a calming evening with nothing but the soothing sounds surrounding them. He was transformed!
How did we catch wind of this? The following week THE COMMAS were lined up to do a live session in the studio and announce the
name of their latest piece of artistry, when Flynn spontaneously broadcasted, “I will no longer be working with the band
unfortunately, due to my career being steered down a different road but it has been surreal working with such a talented pair and I
am fortunate to have them as friends. Well brothers really. I wish you guys all the best with your future as a newly defined duo.” It
was said by Tom and Olly (remaining band members) that this news was not all surprising as they knew that Wilder was desperate to
aspire to new things all the time, but they will support him channel these ambitions and watch him reach a new level of fame.
