Target Audience
Existing Audiences
Looking at a large amount of these magazines, I believe that the audience of these magazines will mostly
be for teenagers and young adults, with a mix of male and female viewers possibly a slightly higher male
audience. These magazines will all have a specific ideology of, indie pop that culture and that way of life,
such as taking an interest in vintage clothing, liking more unique styles and music, they tend to like deep
meaningful stories, poetry and art.
My magazine will create this sense of the indie genre that the reader likes, by making sure the audience can
connect (reception theory) the model used for my magazine will reflect an image the reader will be familiar
with and understand, this allows them to create personal relationships. The facial expression will also
create a sense of mystery and seriousness which provokes the audience to think and question her
expression. My audience will play a big part in the choices I make for my magazine design e.g. colour
schemes. The audience I am aiming for will prefer unique designs, clean covers and darker more plain and
simple colours. They will prefer neutral , duller colours over bright pinks, yellows and oranges. In all these
magazines they use quite neutral colours with only few splashes of colour here and there.
Analysis
 On many of these magazines eye contact is being made with the audience,
this is an important factor to connect the artist with the reader. I will use this
in my production in order to allow the audience to create personal
relationships with the artists. I will use eye contact all the way through my
production to make sure that all throughout the pages they reader still feels
like they can make the connection with the model, this should entice the
reader to read more and feel a stronger personal relationship.
 It is important for the model in my production to reflect my target audience,
my model will therefore be a teenager who can reflect the target audiences
style. I will do this by making sure my model looks more natural, the model
will also be wearing clothing that is similar to what the audience would wear
and that should also help create the relationship between the audience and
the model.
Further Analysis
 Most of these magazine do use Dominant ideology, this creates the stereotype of
the typical “indie kid” these are young people who don’t like mainstream music,
such as the top charts. This genre is more in to soft- style rock, synthesised
music and electronic music. Indies like there unique style and to be themselves,
they are not worries about popularity or being popular. They are seen to not
conform like everyone else in society.
 This stereotype is depicted through magazines, by using bands and artists which
fall in to this category also using unique designs and creating unique images and
makeup/clothing for models. Magazines will also use certain language that the
reader will understand and relate to, this is called preferred reading (reception
theory).
How I will move forward
 To move forward I will create a focus group, this will help me to make the
best design for my magazine and help me make decisions, my focus group
will be made up of a small sample of my target audience, these people will
listen to indie music and be interested in the indie genre.
 I will ask my focus group multiple questions through Facebook messenger as
this is an easy way of communicating with many people at once and also
sharing photos. I will ask many different questions to do with colouring,
photos and fonts. Having this focus group will allow me to make the correct
adjustments to my magazine.
