This document discusses how the author's music magazine represents different social groups. The target audience is 17-30 year olds who enjoy rock and alternative rock music. Both males and females interested in rock music are represented through the genre-specific content. Younger females may also feel represented by the female models used, who accurately portray the intended readers. The contents page image of a young female at a music festival is meant to interest readers who enjoy such events and challenge stereotypes by depicting her having a positive experience.
1. How does your media product represent different social groups?
QUESTION 4
2. My Target Audience
The target audience for my music magazine are
17 – 30 year olds who enjoy listening to rock and
alternative rock music.
I chose this target audience because in the
questionnaire that I carried out it showed that
people of that age range enjoyed the rock genre
the most. I was also interested most in the rock
magazines upon my research so as I have an
interest in the genre of music it will make my
product much more desirable to produce and
make and it means I can have a better
understanding about the particular genre.
3. Genre Associations
When I chose the genre of rock music I began to
think about intimate gigs and hardcore fans. This
meant that throughout my magazine I could have a
more sophisticated approach as it was obvious that
readers would be taking the magazine seriously as it
is quite an individual genre to be interested in so
therefore to have an individual magazine for their
tastes would mean that readers would be interested
in the magazine and the information that it put
across. It also meant that it was easier for me to
incorporate specific information into my magazine
such as intimate gigs and new rising artists, which I
knew would make the magazine appealling.
4. Does my magazine represent a
social group
My magazine could represent many different social groups as it
has quite a wide target audience.
It could be representing younger females as my main model
throughout the magazine is a young female and this means that
people similar to her could relate more and take things away
from the magazine such as style tips and advice from the model
etc.
However males who are specifically interested in the particular
genre of rock are represented throughout the whole magazine as
there is information in the magazine which is specific to the
genre so it includes everyone in the target audience.
The models in my magazine quite accurately represent the
people who I think would be reading my magazine so therefore
readers can also take away things that they see in the magazine.
5. Genre Representations
On the contents page of my magazine I have a picture of a
young female at a festival. This would interest readers who
enjoy going to festivals and taking part in all the musical
activities that festivals offer. The model looks happy and like
she’s having fun in the image. This adds a positive tone to the
magazine to encourage the readers to get involved and to
make readers who
already go to festivals feel more positive
about their existing experiences.
You could say that the image challenges
typical stereotypes about young people,
as they are said to be relatively anti social
and moody, where as in this picture they
are seen to be happy, p0sitive and having
fun.
