Distribution
Once your film is created you are ready to begin distributing your
product. This is often achieved through distribution companies.
These companies represent your film at film festivals, on your
DVD or where ever else you might want to place your movie. The
role of a distributor is to get as many people as possible to see
your product, so it’s often a good idea for films to have multiple
distributors representing their product in different areas of the
world. Distribution companies will source new films that are
being produced, seeking for new media to distribute to their
audiences.
Part 2
Who could distribute my product?
Paramount
As you can see, Paramount pictures
distribute a huge range of genres. In
particular, American comedy films
which have large budgets (such as Bad
Grandpa) and achieve global
distribution. As my film is low budget,
the distribution will probably only go as
far as the UK. I also believe Paramount
wouldn’t be attracted to distributing
my product, this is because we are a
low budget, independent horror film.
As you can see from their list of films,
very few are independent and even less
are of the horror genre. Having said
that, they may be interested in
distributing my product as they have
distributed Paranormal Activity – a film
which partly inspired my narrative.
Disney
Something that is apparent from the
Disney distribution film list is that
they only really distribute the films
that they produce. As a result of my
film not being produced by Disney, I
don’t believe my film would be at the
top of their distribution ‘hit list’. They
are also distributing films which have
a target audience much younger
than mine (younger than 15).
Therefore it would be strange for
them to suddenly distribute a horror
film – I also don’t believe they would
want my film to represent their
company as it is for an older target
audience. Ultimately, I don’t believe
Disney is the best distribution
company for my film.
20th Century Fox
Just like the Paramount, 20th century
fox distributes a wide range of film
genres. From the list of films on the
right, there are no very big horror
films – or any of the horror film genre.
All of the films are also of a big
budget, there are no independent
films in the list. Therefore, I don’t
believe 20th century fox will distribute
my film as it is a horror film (genre
they don’t tend to focus on) and it is
independent/low budget.
Film4
Film4 distribute mostly in the UK – this is
something that is instantly more suitable
for my film. They also distribute a wide
range of genres and film types. They do
distribute horror and thriller films, there
my indie low budget horror would work.
Although they do distribute films with
global distribution (such as The
Inbetweeners 2), they do also distribute
independent films. Film4 might want to
distribute my film because it’s thrilling,
scary and would work in the companies
film list. I hope they would be happy for
my film to represent their company,
however for this to happen they will have
to take a liking to my film. My film is also
different to other films they distribute,
giving their company more of a variety.
Part 3
Why would my film4 distribute my
product?
Being Distributed by Film4
Film4 have a fantastic reputation in the film industry,
distributing many films which have turned out to be
successful. This is important to me as I want my film
distributor to be well know (to increase my audience reach)
and to have a reputation of distributing good films, therefore
people want judge my film because of the company
representing it. Film4 are known for distributing to audiences
aged 15-24 with films like The Inbetweeners, this is the exact
age of my target audience, meaning that the company are
known for releasing films to my target audience. My product
is less mainstream, meaning it might be a financial risk for the
company to distribute my film as they’re unaware of how
much money it will make. However, if Film4 enjoys it, I believe
this company is perfect to distribute my film.
Part 4
How would my product be
advertised?
Before The Film is Released
My film could be advertised in many ways, for example; on the side of a bus, at a bus
stop, in a tube station or on a billboard. It could also be advertised on TV as a trailer,
or a poster in the street. Here are some examples of professional films doing what I
have in mind.
Online Advertisement
Today, nearly everything we do somehow involves
in the internet, and film advertising is no stranger to
this. A good example of how you can advertise a
film online is by creating a website where fans can
view behind the scene pictures and interviews from
people involved in the film. You could also make a
twitter account where fans could follow the page
and be the first to receive news on the film release.
Youtube is another option – creating a channel
where you can upload the film trailer.
Part 5
How would my product be
distributed?
Distribution Options
With the rise of web 2.0, many film distribution
companies are being much more involved with the
internet. As appose to picking up the DVD of my
film in a shop, people can now watch the films
online. Therefore, my film could be distributed onto
streaming sites such as Netflix and Amazon Prime.
People could also subscribe to the Youtube channel
and the website, meaning they will been first to see
updates on the film. My film could also be
distributed to film festivals and cinemas around the
country too, with the ultimate aim to get the most
amount of people to see my film.
