What kind of media institution might
distribute your media product and
why?
To distribute our film we
looked at many distribution
companies, such as:
• Universal studios
• Paramount Pictures
Corporation
• 20th Century Fox
• New Line Cinema
As our film is a horror with
a sub genre of a slasher, we
wanted a production
company who was
experienced and successful
in the distribution of our
genre.
We therefore did further
research into these distribution
companies. Here are brief
summaries of each of the
distribution companies with
our decision and reasoning for
using New Line Cinema
distribution company.
Universal
Studios
Is an American production company,
creating films such as Jaws1975,
Jurassic park and The Lost World:
Jurassic Park which are they’re
most successful horror films. In
the table below you can see the
ranking compared to other films.
They are one of the oldest and
constant film studios with
successful films, this is one of the
reasons we was thinking of using
them. After more research into
this distribution company we
realised that they have distributed
sci-fi and thrillerhorrors and a lot
of comedies and family films that
are successful, they have not
distributed many horror slasher
films so we came to the
conclusion that this was not the
right distribution company for us.
Paramount
Pictures
Corporation
This distribution company is one of
the largest top grossing film studios.
It has distributed films like
Paranormal Activity that has
become very successful which is a
supernatural horror followed by a lot
more Paranormal Activity films, the
first Paranormal Activity had a
worldwide gross of $193,355,800 on
a production budget of $15,000.
It does a lot of digital distribution
with the availability to watch films
through Xbox 360 and play station
consoles, digital sites like iTunes
gives apps for gaming with film
content on mobile phones and
Paramount-inspired videogames. As
a group we felt that they had not
distributed our type of film, of a
slasher film, this is something we
are looking for.

20th
Century
Fox
Is one of the major American film
studios, this is the reason we
wanted to use them as they are
one of the most recognizable film
distributors with lots of
successful films. When we did
further research into this
distribution company we found
the horror films they had
distributed were Devil’s Due a
supernatural horror, Jennifer’s
Body a dark horror comedy, and
Wrong Turn all of which where
very successful. Looking at the
rank below we can see that they
have no horror movies in their
top 10 movies, this again was the
reason we didn’t choose them.
New Line Cinema
Is an American Studio founded in
1967 by Robert Shaye, and its
parent company is Warner Bros
since March 2008. They have made
horror films like A Night Mare on
Elm Street films, Freddy vs Jason,
Jason X and Jason Goes to Hell,
which are all horror slasher films,
which is the genre of our film. They
have also done Final Destination
and The Conjuring so they are well
recognized as a distributor of horror
films. As seen from the picture on
the right, the ranking of the Warner
Bro’s is at the top, as they are the
parent company of New Line
Cinemas this should bring more
success to our film is we was to use
them. A Night Mare on Elm Street
2010 had a gross of $63,059,655
and on the opening weekend
had $63,059,655 this is on
the budget of $63,059,655

had a gross of $63,059,655 and

is why we have chosen to
use New Line Cinema to
distribute our film as they
have experience in
distributing horrors with a
sub genre of slasher, not
only they have done this
multiple times but they have
been successful. Another
reason is that the parent
company of New Line
Cinema is Warner Bros is
the most successful
distributor.
