Evaluation Question 3
What kind of media institution might distribute your
media product and why?
The stages my film would go through for production
are as follows:
• Preproduction- thinking about my film in terms of genre,
cinematography and sound and how to alter all of these elements
to create effect in my film
• Storyboarding- writing down my ideas in a chronological order to
act as the foundation and frame for the film
• Location- researching different locations that are accessible and
would, again, create effect in my film
• Technical Concerns- thinking about camera work, costumes and
editing and also how to light my film in a good way
• Creation- filming the final product and editing the pieces together
to create a professional product
• Distribution- selling my film to cinemas, distribution companies and
shops to sell to the public
The Distributor
In short, the distributor of my film will help sell it to different mediums such as
television, cinemas and festivals that showcase films. The distribution company
handles the theatrical release of the film in certain countries as well as, like I said
before, on different platforms. Some independent film distributors include
Metrodome, Optimum Releasing and Film 4 which I have decided to include as
my film will progress to challenge the conventions of feature film releases.
Distributors find films at film festivals and such events like them which they would
like to invest in and ask the producers and directors for a chance to promote and
distribute their films.
Columbia Pictures
Columbia Pictures distributed Zombieland, which I
have closely based my own product on. They have
also distributed films such as Ghost Rider, Casino
Royale and 30 Days of Night which are all within
the horror/ thriller genre. Columbia Pictures also
distribute non-horror related films such as
Superbad, Spiderman 3 and Step Brothers. I think
that Columbia Pictures may distribute my film as
they produce and distribute different genres of
film therefore mine would coincide. For example,
they distribute a number of horror films therefore
mine would fit in with them and relate to them
whilst also considering the target audience the
distribution company is aiming towards.
Furthermore, there is a range of genres within the
distribution company so my film won’t be lost in
the vast amount of horrors. Because it is the sub-
genre zombie, my film may be more popular than
if it was about a murderer of a cabin in the woods.
20th Century fox
20th Century Fox distributed Gone Girl as well as
many other thriller titles that relate to my film. For
example, Devil’s Due, X-Men: Days of Future Past and
Poltergeist were distributed by them meaning that
my film would fit in with the intended audience of
some of the films chosen for distribution. 20th
Century Fox obviously intended for teenagers and
people who enjoy thrillers and horrors to watch their
films otherwise they wouldn’t distribute or produce
them and therefore I feel my film would fit in well as
it’s intended audience is 16-25 year old males and
females. Furthermore, much like the point I made
with Columbia Pictures, 20th Century Fox distribute a
variation of genres so my film would stand out as the
company doesn’t solely focus on horrors or thrillers.
Big name films such as Penguins of Madagascar, Let’s
Be Cops and Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods help
support my point as there is a mixture of children’s
films, comedies and developments of television
series’.
Film 4
Film 4 distributes a number of genre films including
12 years a Slave (period drama), Attack the Block
(comedy horror) and 127 (thriller drama) however I
didn’t choose this distribution company because of
it’s variation in genres. Although it would be a good
candidate for this as my horror/ thriller film would
stand out and wouldn’t be lost in an abundance of
films of the same genre, Film 4 also distributes
independent films as well as big name films. A Field in
England, with a budget of £300,000, is an indie film
and was distributed by Film 4 and therefore I feel that
my film would benefit from this company as it is more
of an indie and as the film progresses from just the
opening titles it would focus on more controversial
issues and alter the stereotypical film narrative
(equilibrium, disequilibrium, re-equilibrium). These
themes are common in independent films so I think
my film would do well if screened in a multiplex art-
house cinema and then gained views worldwide with
the help of social media and sites such as YouTube.
