How does your media product
represent particular social
groups?
Evaluation – Question 2
The social groups that are represented in my are British
and American young adults which is in coordination with
my target audience as it allows the reader to be able to
connect & relate more with the magazine. All images of
models in my magazine are males as this follows typical
conventions of my magazine genre however I did want to
use a female model as well to help with the gender
imbalance. Despite this the magazine is still targeted at
males and females equally and I tried to overcome the
lack of female images by tailoring the model’s pose in
order to be less intimidating and go against hegemonic
norms to be equally as appealing to the female audience.
Mise En Scene
The general idea was to dress the model appropriately and
relative to my target audience. The front cover features a
model wearing typical attire for the genre of my magazine –
leather jacket, gold chains, dark tee – this gives an instant
impression and allows readers to tell the genre through visual
recognition. The gold chains were further used on the contents
page and dark jeans and a white tee also followed the genre’s
conventions along with a gold watch to give a more affluent look
to the model and something that a young, impressionable adult
would want to aspire to. The double page spread was designed
to show the individual nature of the artist which was further
highlighted by wearing a hat to reduce chances of eye contact
even more. The general clothing again relates to the target
audience – jeans, tee and a hoodie allowing the reader to relate
without using means such as direct mode of address.
Shot Types
Two of my three shots of a model were eye line shots with the
model looking directly down the camera lens in order to create
direct mode of address and allow the reader to make a connection
with the model (uses and grat.) Furthermore the facial
expressions used aren’t the typical intimidating or challenging
types, instead they are much softer which will allow the female
audience to create a better connection with the magazine. The
double page spread image is again purposefully challenging typical
conventions in order to create the desired atmosphere for that
particular image. The use of a long shot captures the artist and
the background and shows the importance of the subject which
enables the idea of independence and individuality to be created.
Layout
The layout of the magazine is designed specifically to be
representative of young adults through the simplicity of the
text and the use of colour and bold letters. All text is designed to
be easily read and allow readers to be able to follow words
across a line as well as capture all information from top to
bottom. All features are also current and feature big names to
keep attention from the audience and there isn’t excessive
amounts of text which would be more commonly found in
magazines aimed at older generations.
Ideology
In my production I prioritised the reception theory with the ability to relate the audience and their
age to the featured artists in the magazine. This creates a personal relationship between reader
and artist which entices the reader and can create a big fan base through the relation between
reader and magazine. This was achieved by shot positioning such as direct mode of address and
confident posing which creates an image that my target audience would aspire to. Furthermore the
informality of the text similar to that of VIBE and XXL which can grab the audience through relation
in the text and increases the likelihood of them receiving the intended message and keeping
attention.
