2. Social Group
In my magazine, I chose to use the
middle/working class representations to
fall inline with my target audience. I
made sure that the models were of the
same age as my target audience. I did
this so the audience could easily relate
and see themselves as the models in the
magazine. All the models used on my
magazine were male as Hip Hop/Rap is
mainly by males and the fans are also
prominently male.
3. Front Cover
On my front cover, I used a male model to try engage
the male audience. In doing so, it would be more likely
they could associate themselves with the model, which
creates a personal relationship and pulls in the
audience. The facial expression is quite unclear, which is
very conventional as a lot of magazines do the same.
The mise-en-scene is another factor which represents
my target audience; the clothing. The top worn by my
model is a popular brand worn by the target audience.
Therefor having similar clothing makes the model a sort
of inspiration. The wording on the clothing ‘Billionaire
Boys Club’ can make an audience member feel as they
could be part of the same ‘club’ if they wear what the
model wears.
Finally during my research I found out that the typical
Hip Hop/Rap magazine model had a black/half cast skin
colour. I followed along with this and got myself a half
cast model.
4. Shot Types
In all of my images, I created a direct mode of
address with the audience through eye
contact. This creates a personal relationship
with the reader. Some of my images shot were
actually taken with the model looking away
from the camera, but after referring with my
focus group, they found it to be less effective.
I mainly used mid shots and medium close ups
in my photographs which enabled the reader
to understand the importance of the artists in
the magazines.
5. Layout
On my contents page I used more
pictures than any other page in my
magazine. I kept the text to a minimum
on this page, just giving the audience key
information.
I used rows and columns in order to allow
my audience to go directly to the
information they want to view, therefor
fulfilling their needs. Sub headings
allowed the reader to find a section
quickly.
6. Ideology
For my magazine I prioritized appealing to my target audience.
In doing so, this allowed me to create personal relationships
between the images of artists and the reader. The reader can
relate to the artist, which entices them to get the magazine. It
creates an inspiration for them resulting in a loyal fan base.
Using similar aged models to the target audience played a huge
part in who would be my audience, as this is a key aspect in
how they perceive the magazine and therefore whether they
can relate to it or not.
