4. Progression and learning
There were many changes that I wanted to make from my preliminary task to my final production, mostly
due to the sheer simplicity of my preliminary.
The first thing is the images. In my preliminary I
used one image on my front cover with very
little attention paid to mise en scene as well as
lighting and camera shots. In comparison, my final
production featured pictures which were taken
with focus upon mise en scene, the camera shot
as well as lighting and editing. My images for my
final production were edited and manipulated
whereas in my preliminary task, I just dropped
the image in and cropped out its background. I
was able to do this by learning how to use my
camera’s settings better, such as the ISO and
aperture, as well as learning how to edit
pictures on Photoshop to improve their quality
and fit in well with my production.
As well as images I wanted to improve the text
used. In my preliminary I used standard fonts and
with regards to my contents page, the amount of
text was very minimal and overall any text that
was used didn’t have much focus put upon it. In my
final production I used a sans serif font as I found
this to be a common convention as well as making
it easier to read, the actual content of text
increased and I paid more attention into positioning
and size of text to comply with common codes as
well as being appropriate to the page and
furthermore I made different bodies of text
different sizes; for example the mastheads being
the biggest followed by headings and then the
actual page text.
5. Progression and Learning
Another improvement I wanted to make was with the layout
of my magazine. In my preliminary I learned how to use
layers on a simple level but there was little complexity
shown at all. In my final production I had become a lot more
competent with the general use of Photoshop and I became
comfortable with using layers as well as creating a much
better structured magazine. I also, through tutorials,
learned how to create shadow effects such as on my front
cover which I integrated into my final production to give a
more professional look.
During my research I learned the importance of a masthead and
the role it can play in the magazine. Through research I found that
my masthead should be much larger, more bold and stand out, all of
which my preliminary task lacked. I implemented these
characteristics into my final production as I learnt how to
manipulate text and change individual letter spacing and height and
therefore produce a far better masthead.
6. Final Production
I was able to incorporate all of my findings and research that I learnt from creating my preliminary task into
my final production of my front cover, contents page and double page spread.
