This document discusses how the film represents particular social groups through its target audience and characters. The main character is a middle-aged man who dresses smartly and has a superior attitude, allowing middle-aged audiences to relate to feeling young at heart. References to British gangster films and use of cockney dialogue and James Brown music attract British audiences familiar with these genres. How does your
media product
represent
particular
social groups?
• Representing my media product can be seen as difficult
as I would want my film to fit in certain, and as many as
possible, groups. But by doing this it could effect other
aspects of different groups. However, following what
target audience I wanted and the genre of
drama/thriller, then my film should reach out to the
right people and represent them.

3. Targeting a
middle aged
audience
Character
• Firstly, the main character I have chosen is a middle-aged man who has a superior
attitude, he doesn’t really care of what people think and still goes around
assassinating people, which gives an idea that he is still this young person at
heart and believes he is capable of doing things that possibly young adults can do
e.g. having so much energy and the sense of adrenalin to go do this.This gives an
element to the middle aged audience that they can relate to themselves, as
possibly they still feel this way too.
• The way he’s dressed also shows relevance to this point. He wants to look smartly
dressed, so having his costume be a long coat, smart shoes, shirt really
improvises this and possibly makes him have a sense of hierarchy. Having trends
like this can also then be influential to the middle aged audience.From viewing the film, you can clearly
assume that it’s aimed at an older
audience as they are able to understand
the context of the film. But there are
other conventions and reasons to why
else its targeting them.

4. Relevance
to British
gangster
films
• With my film it has a link to typical British gangster films due to
the use of my main character and the obvious cockney voice over
I made him use. I think relating my film to this genre and films by
directors such as Guy Ritchie, who has made popular gangster
films such and Snatch and Lock, Stock andTwo Smoking Barrels.
With having my film be significant to films like these it will
attract audiences that enjoy films like these, which in
generalisation is British people. As they are more likely to
understand the film and cockney slang than audiences from
other places who have never heard of certain terms used.
• The music I used over the top of the intro is also I find relevant to
the character.The song I chose is ‘The Boss’ by James Brown.The
lyrics include things like “Paid the cost to be the boss.” “look at
me you know what you see, you see a bad mutha.” I think this is a
key significance to my character and it fits in with the feel of this
gangster ego. Furthermore, in films like ‘Snatch’ they also use
James Brown songs. Using songs that are related to these certain
films again brings in a wider audience and possibly even fans of
the artist, which therefore involves cross-media convergence.
• Furthermore, having references to this type of drama genre it
again targets an older audience that are able to understand
these ethnic group and language used.

5. Quentin
Tarantino
• Another relevant director is QuentinTarantino, due to
his films containing all the blood, guts and swearing,
which is linked to concepts in my film.Again containing
things like this draws in audiences that like these
aspects in a movie. Obviously the link is that in the first
2 minutes of my film I already have a shooting, which is
unseen, but then to seeing my main character with
bloody all on his hands and face.
• So having these aspects means older audiences again
are mainly targeted and people that don’t mind gore in
films.

6. Targeting a
younger
audience
• Because I aimed my film at 15+ it means I would have
to target the “younger” audience as well. By doing that
I think have concepts such as gore and a more
contextual storyline that some younger people will find
it interesting and therefore watch it.
• I also think my main character may also be influential
to them. Having an older character that acts the way
he does, a care-free person may be someone they look
up to or would want to be like in the future. But
obviously not being an assassin.
