The Roman Empire A Historical Colossus.pdfkaushalkr1407
The Roman Empire, a vast and enduring power, stands as one of history's most remarkable civilizations, leaving an indelible imprint on the world. It emerged from the Roman Republic, transitioning into an imperial powerhouse under the leadership of Augustus Caesar in 27 BCE. This transformation marked the beginning of an era defined by unprecedented territorial expansion, architectural marvels, and profound cultural influence.
The empire's roots lie in the city of Rome, founded, according to legend, by Romulus in 753 BCE. Over centuries, Rome evolved from a small settlement to a formidable republic, characterized by a complex political system with elected officials and checks on power. However, internal strife, class conflicts, and military ambitions paved the way for the end of the Republic. Julius Caesar’s dictatorship and subsequent assassination in 44 BCE created a power vacuum, leading to a civil war. Octavian, later Augustus, emerged victorious, heralding the Roman Empire’s birth.
Under Augustus, the empire experienced the Pax Romana, a 200-year period of relative peace and stability. Augustus reformed the military, established efficient administrative systems, and initiated grand construction projects. The empire's borders expanded, encompassing territories from Britain to Egypt and from Spain to the Euphrates. Roman legions, renowned for their discipline and engineering prowess, secured and maintained these vast territories, building roads, fortifications, and cities that facilitated control and integration.
The Roman Empire’s society was hierarchical, with a rigid class system. At the top were the patricians, wealthy elites who held significant political power. Below them were the plebeians, free citizens with limited political influence, and the vast numbers of slaves who formed the backbone of the economy. The family unit was central, governed by the paterfamilias, the male head who held absolute authority.
Culturally, the Romans were eclectic, absorbing and adapting elements from the civilizations they encountered, particularly the Greeks. Roman art, literature, and philosophy reflected this synthesis, creating a rich cultural tapestry. Latin, the Roman language, became the lingua franca of the Western world, influencing numerous modern languages.
Roman architecture and engineering achievements were monumental. They perfected the arch, vault, and dome, constructing enduring structures like the Colosseum, Pantheon, and aqueducts. These engineering marvels not only showcased Roman ingenuity but also served practical purposes, from public entertainment to water supply.

This is a presentation by Dada Robert in a Your Skill Boost masterclass organised by the Excellence Foundation for South Sudan (EFSS) on Saturday, the 25th and Sunday, the 26th of May 2024.
He discussed the concept of quality improvement, emphasizing its applicability to various aspects of life, including personal, project, and program improvements. He defined quality as doing the right thing at the right time in the right way to achieve the best possible results and discussed the concept of the "gap" between what we know and what we do, and how this gap represents the areas we need to improve. He explained the scientific approach to quality improvement, which involves systematic performance analysis, testing and learning, and implementing change ideas. He also highlighted the importance of client focus and a team approach to quality improvement.
2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

2. Annabelle
• Black background creates a feeling of isolation and makes the audience feel like they are
alone with the doll
• The rocking chair shows that the doll is clearly an old presents and is older than the
audience is lead to believe and this makes them wonder where the doll is from
• The red rose on the doll suggests innocence and life as the red rose is full and looks real so
the doll is shown to look alive with the rose around her
• The light is shining down on the doll this shows that the darkness is coming from her and
the light is trying to refract the darkness but the only light is on the dress to try and show
an innocent side to the doll
• All of the text is in the bottom 3rd and this is so it can be seen clearly in the shadow and
doesn’t clash with any of the light on Annabelle
• The name of the film and the release date are in red this shows that the doll is the main
focus of the film and as the release date only says coming soon it send a sense of urgency
for the audience as they will want to see the film as soon as and this means that more buzz
will be created and more people will want to see the film.
• The tagline reads “Before The Conjuring there was Annabelle this shows that this evil doll
has been around for much longer than the audience would think if they are familiar with
The Conjuring” series and this will make them want to see the film more and the films will
become more popular.
• As well as this there is text in the bottom of the screen this gives reference to previous
films and who will be staring in this upcoming film and who produced the film
3. Finders Keepers
• Black background creates a feeling of isolation and makes the audience feel like they are
alone with the doll and the girl as suspicious happenings may occur when they are
together.
• The doll is holding a serrated blade which instantly makes the audience feel unsafe and
this clearly shows that something bad will happen.
• The tagline “no soul is safe” is shown in a bold red font and this means that the audience
can associate the red font with blood and death and this is furthered by the fact the doll
is holding a sharp object.
• The dolls piercing black eyes suggest an evil presence is near and this will make the
audience feel on edge and as the piercing black eyes are the first noticeable thing it
means that the main focus is the doll.
• The title of the film is in a bold red font as well and this again makes the audience think
of blood and makes the audience feel uneasy about the film
• The doll and the girl are seen in very dull clothing and this is to show the audience that
the doll is very evil and that the girl is being consumed by the darkness and with this the
doll is in the foreground and the girl is in the background and this means that the doll is
the main focus and is the dominant evil in the film
4. The Conjuring• When looking at this poster the first thing you notice is a big tree to the right of the poster this shows
the tree is bare and lifeless as there are no leaves on the tree and this shows that the tree has died or
is dying.
• As well as this there is a noose on the biggest branch there is a shadow cast on the ground but no
body is suspended in the air this shows there are suspicious events that may take place and this links
to the genre of horror as things are occurring in the poster that cant be explained and this will make
the audience want to know what has happened.
• The dark clouds establish this is an eerie scene and this links to the themes and colours in a horror film
as most horrors are very dark and lifeless and this shows that the film is easy to identify as a horror
• The skyline is always important as it shows a link between products as it reads “From the director of
Saw and Insidious”. This shows that the audience may be familiar with these films and will want to
watch The Conjuring more
• The tagline which reads “Based on the true case files of the Warrens”, this makes the audience
wonder who the Warrens are and what they experienced and this sense of awe will make the
audience want to see the film more to see what these people experienced as they were real life
people living their lives solving these mysteries
• At the bottom of the screen you have the release date this shows when the film will be released to the
public. And this will help to generate buzz and get people excited for the film and will make them want
to watch the film
• The title of the film is in the top 3rd of the screen this shows the clearly what the film is called and as it
is in a bold black font it can be seen in the clouds. This is also in a bold black font because it could
represent the possibility of a dark demonic presence and this means that the audience will be aware
of what to expect. The particular typeface is quite chilling as it is Times New Roman and this makes
the font look very old and sharp and this means that the audience is able to see it and the fact the text
looks somewhat older it means the audience can make a link to the film as these events that may
occur would have happened a long time ago
5. The Conjuring 2
• The first thing you notice is a little girl standing on a window ledge this shows a striking almost blinding
white light piercing through the open window this shows that she is trying to escape the horrors that lie
inside the home to get to freedom
• As well as this there is a nun in black and white clothing in the far right of the poster, they are almost
invisible to the audience and this means that if they audience have trouble seeing this character then
the people in the film will be almost totally oblivious to the evil presence and this means that the
audience will be able to identify who the evil presence is
• Then in the top 3rd of the screen there is a woman's hand. Her hand looks pale and cold to show that
she is in a scary and chilling location and that she is frightened of the evil presence in the house. In her
hand is a cross this is used in most exorcisms to expel evil spirits. The cross is dangling out of her hand
as this means the cross may not be enough to stop the evil lurking in the darkness
• The Tagine reads “The next true story from the case file of Ed and Lorraine Warren” this shows that the
audience may be aware of the prequel and this means that the audience may know who the ghost
hunters are and this is why their first names are used in the tagline
• The Skyline which reads from the director of The Conjuring and Insidious this shows the audience who
has made the film and just like the prequel gives reference to previous films and as they have The
Conjuring in their Skyline the audience will know what the film will entail if they have seen the previous
film
• The title of the film is in the lower 3rd this way it doesn’t clash with the light coming through the
window and this means that the audience can see the name of the film clearly as it is in a bold white
font against the black hardwood floor and this means that the audience can see the name of the film
clearly and identify what the film is.
