2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.
The French Revolution, which began in 1789, was a period of radical social and political upheaval in France. It marked the decline of absolute monarchies, the rise of secular and democratic republics, and the eventual rise of Napoleon Bonaparte. This revolutionary period is crucial in understanding the transition from feudalism to modernity in Europe.

Operation “Blue Star” is the only event in the history of Independent India where the state went into war with its own people. Even after about 40 years it is not clear if it was culmination of states anger over people of the region, a political game of power or start of dictatorial chapter in the democratic setup.
The people of Punjab felt alienated from main stream due to denial of their just demands during a long democratic struggle since independence. As it happen all over the word, it led to militant struggle with great loss of lives of military, police and civilian personnel. Killing of Indira Gandhi and massacre of innocent Sikhs in Delhi and other India cities was also associated with this movement.

2. How have I posed/ dressed my actors?
■ The two main characters are both intelligent female 17 year olds. Both characters are
English that are well spoken which the audience can connote to being fairly posh
leading to them being from a middle class family. I used a low angle shot of the two
characters to portray them being confident with the task ahead to alert the audience
how they would approach it which links in with the characters being courageous and
ready for a challenge. The clothes I dressed them in are fashionable and fairly
expensive meaning people notice they come from a family that has money to spend
on luxury’s. Both girls are represented as mature and fast-thinking through their
dialogue which highlight’s there intelligence.Children that come from middle-class
family's have connotations of having a good education.
3. What does my mise-en-scene communicate
about the people represented?
■ The grandmothers attic/garage is where the opening of my film is mainly set. Its fairly
modern which is unusual because most attic’s are quite dark and dingy. This is because
I wanted my film to be set in modern day.The props such as the furniture looks
expensive and the ring the two characters find looks like it’s worth a lot of money. This
communicates to the audience that middle class family’s like to own luxury items. The
costumes that my actors wear are relatable to the target audience because that is
what they would wear so they can relate to the characters. One of the main characters
are presented on their phone at the end of the opening. This represents her as a
modern day teenager as technology is growing and lots of teenagers use their phone
more than ever before. The phone she uses is an IPhone, it is a luxury item and
highlights her class and ability to use modern day technology.
4. How does my product represent its
target audience?
■ The Clothes I dressed the characters in are fashionable in the present day. Lots of middle -
class young female adults ranging from early teens to mid twenties buy their jeans from
Topshop so therefore I put them both inTopshop “Jamie” jeans. These jeans are around £40
pounds which links to the target audience because they can look up to my characters and
relate to them. This represents my target audience as being able to keep up with trends
and following the norm. It also represents my audience as being quite appearance
conscious and wanting to look nice. My characters are faced with a challenge that would
unfold later on in the film. This may represent my target audience wanting to aspire to be
my like my characters and therefore aspire to be courageous and confident. One of my
characters are represented as quieter than the other on purpose so it widens how my
target audience can relate. If people in my target audience are not so confident I wanted
them to watch the character grow later on in the film so they think that could happen to
them. Overall my product represents its target audience as stereotypical young adult
females.
5. Have I conformed to conventions?
■ Personally I don’t think that I have conformed to conventions of the adventure genre.
The fact both main characters are females is quite uncommon within the genre. Also
many lead characters in adventure films are from relatively poor backgrounds. I
haven’t conformed to this convention as my lead characters are from a middle class
family. I wanted to escape from natural conventions of the characters being from a
poor background because I thought it would attract my target audience better and
doesn’t just put the characters in a positive light due to their courageousness. I think
that posing my actors in nice clothes and portray them being from a middle class
family attracts my target audience from the start and enables them to relate straight
away. This also makes my media product different from others in the same genre and
therefore opens up a gap in my distribution company’s portfolio which I intended to
do.
