This document summarizes a music video project that aimed to both use conventions of typical music videos while also challenging them. The video focused entirely on a narrative rather than a musical performance, using film style titles and a multi-stranded narrative about a poker match and crippling debt. This break from conventions brought the video closer in line with narrative film theories. The goal was to create something unique but still appeal to audiences familiar with standard music video tropes.
2. Throughout the creation of my media
product (Music Video) me and my group
used a mix of conventions of music videos
whilst also using many ways that would
challenge the typical music video.
This was done to provide a sense of
uniqueness to our music video whilst also
not alienating our audience. Throughout the
creation of our music video we found many
music videos that we were able to find
examples that we then further developed
our ideas off of.
16. Overall I think that our music video goes against the typical
conventions of a music video due mostly to it having no
performance in it whatsoever and focusing entirely on a
narrative. This break in conventions was emphasised by the
film style titles that were included in the music video and the
fact that we opted for a multi-stranded narrative that focused
on the realism of a poker match with a man suffering from
crippling debt.
The fact that our music video is able to relate closer with
narrative theories based off Andrew Goodwin is another clear
factor that our music video breaks the typical conventions of
a music video.
