OK GO – Music Video Case Study
OK GO are a rock/ indie band that moved towards a more rock-pop style of music.
The group has created a well-known band image and reputation for their unique and
inspiring music videos for their music. However, this image has grown overtime but
began with one of their very first music videos for the song ‘Here It Goes Again’. This
particular music video saw a choreographed sequence using treadmills run
throughout the entirety of the song. A similar style of music video was also used for
the song ‘A Million Ways’. This video was similar in that there was a choreographed
dance sequence throughout the song. These music videos could be considered
examples of conceptual styled music videos as well as performance based music
videos.
Their music video for the song ‘Get over it’ would be an example of a performance
styled music video. This is because the band is shown to be performing with their
instruments and are the clear focus of the video. Other aspects of a performance
focused music video would be the use of lip syncing to the song with it seen in this
music video. However, this video keeps the audiences interest by including different
shot types and shot angles as well as the inclusion of a slow-motion camera shot.
Some of their more recent music videos, for example, ‘The One Moment’ and ‘Upside
Down & Inside Out’ are clear examples of more creative and unique music videos.
These music videos could therefore be seen as performance videos as they feature
the artists, however, I would also label them as narrative due to the ideas that have
been put into the music video.
Overtime, these music videos that the band have created have become more and
more impressive and creative due to an increase in their overall following. This has
therefore allowed them to generate more income and more views from their videos.
However, people nowadays tend to only really focus on the actual music video rather
than the band actually singing due to the creativeness.
