In our A2 Media Studies we decided to use the song ‘ThnksFrThMmrs’ by
Fall Out Boy. In A2 progression in the previous year, we created a lip sync
video to the song ‘That’s what makes you beautiful’ by One Direction. We
followed many conventions of a pop punk music video and tried to put as
many of these into our music video as possible. One of these conventions
that we followed was our music video was a video of a band performing.
This is a common convention in pop punk music videos where it shows the
band playing at a concert on in a studio. We tried to follow this convention
by having our band also perform in a studio and having close-ups of
individual band members at different parts of the music video. This
follows the conventions of a stereotypical pop punk music video. Another
convention we followed was having the band wearing modern, casual
clothing. We developed some conventions from the original video by Fall
Out Boy by taking out the narrative and replacing it with memories. We
did this as it we felt it would co-ordinate with the song’s lyrics better and
link in with the song. We also found this easier than a narrative to do.
However, we challenged conventions by adding in little videos of a photoshoot with the band. We changed the colour to make it black and white, to
help show that these little videos were memories. This challenges the
conventions as pop punk videos do not usually show memories of the band
but instead can show other videos such as their fans at concerts. Our video
relates to Andrew Goodwins theory of visuals. During the video when the
line ‘Thanks for the memories’ said, a memory occurs of the photo-shoot.
This is well timed with the lyrics and works well as the visuals and audio
are in sync. We also focused on star image, which is another part of
Goodwins theory. At the beginning of the video, we have the lead singer
singing the opening in the studio by his self. The lead singer was also on
camera more than the other band members. We felt this showed the
importance of the lead singer in the band as other band members
gradually joined him in the studio as the song progressed. This also shows
the lead singer not only as a role model but also as a key member of the
band.
