           Fonts-Many music magazines change
the font dependant on what is
written as you can see I have used

           Justification-I have justified my

           magazines do not do this.
Evaluation-Question 1
“In what way does your media product use, develop or
challenge forms and conventions of real media products?”

During the production of my music magazine I have mostly followed the

  • 1. Evaluation-Question 1 “In what way does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?” Throughout the production of my music magazine I have predominantly adhere to the codes and conventions of a typical indie-pop magazine to interest and target my audience. Use of a pull quote-using quotes from within Header-the header is usually above the masthead to give more Main Image-The main image is a two shot of my artists; the magazine helps interest the reader as they information which I have followed. In my research part of the brief I have Huw & Florence which is clearly visible as they are are not simply cover lines, it’s what the artists gained information that many magazines use this to create a frame positioned at a focal point in the middle of the page to around the actual magazine. I have used uppercase lettering within the draw the audiences attention. Florence's eye contact is are saying. This is shown typically in the ‘pop’ header as I have found out that this helps draw the attention of my target very direct to the audience which shows her confidence genre which I have tried to emulate and follow. audience, but also using lowercase to help portray a friendly, informal and shows the connection she wants to make with the Language- The Front Cover vibe. viewers. Whereas, Huw is a little more submissive very direct and in white back drop behind the artists allow the why the way he is behind Florence and not looking some parts audiences gaze to predominantly her and Huw. Males directly at the camera which can imply he is not of commanding would also appeal to this as it’s not very busy to a importance. Florence reflects the genre from the image, ensuring that the traditional pop magazine and be put off. as dark subtle colours are normally associated with the reader does what the magazine genre of indie and the blue could have traits with pop of Masthead-“ENCHORD!” is clearly shown to the buyers being bright and colourful. Using Florence directly in wants to entice of this particular magazine the masthead is stretched them in this front of the page represents the stereotype of female out at the top of this publication- which takes up artists on pop magazine. Huw is wearing a checked red again is follows almost a fifth of the page and uses a dramatic font the conventions coloured shirt which again links in with the overall style that is sans serif. The font is very bold with arrangement of this front cover to reflect the genre of a typical indie- almost bits torn out of it to give it some edge, this pop magazine as through the way the colours are being portrayed here. could suggest a rebellion act but sophisticated by the they use informal use of colour. The exclamation mark chosen at the lexis to help end of the masthead gives the front cover a dramatic The sell lines/cover lines-The use of thin yet quirky font make the reader effect to stress the masthead being at the top. Most relaxes the importance of the typography and what it feel comfortable magazines emphasise the masthead through the use means, the use of sans serif shows the heavy message too. of colour and how big it is therefore I have followed coming across which in my research I have found out is this. important when dealing with serious matters. In the pop Barcodes. genre you don’t normally see this as it for a younger Dates. Issue. Use of flash- by using an auto shape gives a quirky, audience however I have rejected this convention and Price-by using fun feel to the magazine, which is also a common aimed this at a more mature age appropriate range. the barcode, convention used in indie-pop magazines. The use of date and price in the short snappy use of lexis show the clarity to the magazine. By placing a black boarder around the Rule of thirds- The layout observes the rule of thirds to the right hand add interest to the target audience. • 3. Contents Page Dates. Website. Issue No. Many magazines usually have the date etc on the contents page too which helps promote their magazine I have abided this convention and Subheadings- I have used features Rule of thirds- Still following the rule of used it as a header. and subheading which are justified thirds throughout my contents page to centred which I have seen most help align all my work this again positions magazines due to keep everything everything to help attract my intended clear, as you can see I have only audience. picked a couple of features from within the magazine and anchored page numbers on them which has Masthead-I have used the same been seen on indie magazines that I masthead typography from the front have tried to emulate. cover which is usually represented in typical magazines so I am following the conventions. The sell lines/cover lines-The use of cover lines is essential on a contents page which helps attract audience Editors Note-Most contents pages have inside so I have followed this and editors note which I have found out used only one as I feel this is during my research so I have adhered to important. this and used it in my contents page as this helps make the audience feel involved and comfortable. Images- The use of images is beneficial on a contents page which helps bring out what my magazine is all about. A typical indie-pop magazine has many images on the Colours-By using the same colours on the contents page so I have tried to contents page I am keeping the pages follow this and used two big, main consistent and clear which many indie images either side. magazines do in order to follow the conventions of a magazine.
  • 4. Double Page Spread By-line-I have added a by-line in the Pull Quote-By Drop Cap-By using a drop cap at the corner which helps show who has using a pull quote start of the intro gives the article a taken the photograph and written the from the article more feminine approach as she has article, this sticks to the conventions helps interests the written it herself. of a typical music magazine. readers into this, I have seen many indie magazines Colour scheme-I have do this in my used the same 4 colours research, in my again on this page which questionnaire too sticks the conventions of my target a real music magazine. audience like this. Artists name-By House Style-The overall using ‘Florence’ house style of this double underneath the page spread is very clear, artist allows the simple and attracts my readers to clearly target audience as see that this is her. everything within this This is usually a follows the code of an common indie-pop magazine. convention in typical pop The mis-en-scene magazines. represented through this helps attract certain audience such as the way Page Numbers-On a double page her make up and facial Main Image-I have used my main artist on the right spread page numbers are visible so I expression is expressed hand side of the double page which is more than an A4 have to added page numbers in which helps depict the side this helps reveal that this is image dominated and either side which I saw in one indie genre of this magazine. only small amounts of text which I have gained magazines called ‘Blink-186’ I feel that this links in with the knowledge from my focus group that 16-24year olds conventions of a music magazine. prefer.
  • 5. Introduction-I have a conventional standfirst to introduce the article. Colour Scheme-I again kept with the same colour scheme of using the initials of the speaker in red to correspond with Florence’s lips, this usually is seen in pop music magazines . Fonts-Many music magazines change the font dependant on what is written as you can see I have used many different types of styles and sizes to help encourage the audience to read this article this fits with genre and conventions of a real music product. Language-The Language of the article is very informal and chatty which is a typical convention of a question and answer format article, this allows readers to feel at ease and find out about the artist once reading this. Justification-I have justified my lettering to make sure everything is in line and does not run off the page I have researched this and many magazines do not do this.
  • 6. Evaluation-Question 1 “In what way does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?” During the production of my music magazine I have mostly followed the codes and conventions of a typically indie-pop magazine however feel I needed to reject some in order to aim and target my specific intended audience.
  • 7. Front Cover Audience- Many pop magazines are intended at women, Mis-en-scene- Huw’s cap could I have rejected this convention and made my magazine challenge this genre of indie-pop as Main Artists-I have used a medium be predominantly aimed at women and men, by the use this apparel is seen generally to be two shot on my front cover whereas of colours and my chosen artists. Also the direct eye contact is medium two shot on my front only from Florence which suggests cover whereas normally on the she is the dominate one in charge front cover there is usually one therefore Huw is rejecting to do this main artist who is at a mid-shot which again challenges the I have rejected the conventions conventions. of music magazine and decided to this to help attract my Cover Lines-I have slightly audiences more as these are slanted my cover line opposed both my artists. to which is normally justified and straight within the rule of thirds to help give the Barcode-The use of the magazine a sense of informality barcode in the terminal and persona to my magazine. area is typical convention The main cover line on the used in most magazines page ‘be free’ is not capitalized however I have increased which gives an effect of being the scale of this which is more softer and less harsh bigger to show the price, which again anchors the issue number and date meaning of being free. I feel therefore have discarded fans would be draw to this as this convention to attract this its less direct and my audience. highlights them being involved and together.
  • 8. Contents Page Main Artists-Here I have only two images on my contents Subheadings-Again I have page which is uncommon as this denied the conventions tells the audience what is inside here as I have selected only the magazine therefore I have a few features that is in the challenged this convention and magazine by skipping some developed it by making the pages and only featuring core focus being on the two the most important i.e. main artists as this is a ‘new’ ‘gigs 10’ which shows that music magazine bringing in new gigs is on page 10. I feel positioning them finishing off the either side of the contents is subheadings with ‘online very different to most indie-pop 50’ shows the audience magazines, Florence and Huws that there are a lot pages eye contact with each other and that they have done gives the audience an involved this for a reason. of them being a couple and brings out the artists personality. Cover Lines-I have only got one cover line on the contents page which again I rejected as this links in with the front cover.

Editor's Notes

  1. What challenges have I made different? i.e. barcode being bigger than usual. Medium shot rather than a mid-shot using a two shot not only one artist!! Why I have rejected them make sure you justify why??How have I followed the conventions of the music magazine? i.e. masthead being across the top third.
