2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.
This is a presentation by Dada Robert in a Your Skill Boost masterclass organised by the Excellence Foundation for South Sudan (EFSS) on Saturday, the 25th and Sunday, the 26th of May 2024.
He discussed the concept of quality improvement, emphasizing its applicability to various aspects of life, including personal, project, and program improvements. He defined quality as doing the right thing at the right time in the right way to achieve the best possible results and discussed the concept of the "gap" between what we know and what we do, and how this gap represents the areas we need to improve. He explained the scientific approach to quality improvement, which involves systematic performance analysis, testing and learning, and implementing change ideas. He also highlighted the importance of client focus and a team approach to quality improvement.

We all have good and bad thoughts from time to time and situation to situation. We are bombarded daily with spiraling thoughts(both negative and positive) creating all-consuming feel , making us difficult to manage with associated suffering. Good thoughts are like our Mob Signal (Positive thought) amidst noise(negative thought) in the atmosphere. Negative thoughts like noise outweigh positive thoughts. These thoughts often create unwanted confusion, trouble, stress and frustration in our mind as well as chaos in our physical world. Negative thoughts are also known as “distorted thinking”.

2. Features
• In my magazine, I asked the respondents on what type of contents they would like to see on my front cover
in terms of cover lines and topics. The majority of respondents chose ‘’Music news and gossip’’, as a result I
added this to my front cover in the form on an interview to attract my audience. I also created a list of music
news and gossip as my cover line to make it more noticeable for the reader.
• As well as using this information for my front cover, I also incorporated this on my contents page. I added
more music news as this was highly requested by the respondents and fits in with the stereotype of my
target audience enjoying news and gossip. However, the second highest requested topic was ‘’Music
reviews, I decided to use that as well to further capture my audience’s attention. This was done through a
cover line on the front cover ‘’20 Club bangers’’.
• For my contents and cover page, I made sure to use well known bands and artists to attract my audience as I
believe that they would listen to them. I made them stand out through the use of a strapline on the top as
well as using different fonts and colours from my coverlines.
3. Images
• The Images I would chose were very significant as they would help set the tone of the overall magazine. The
front cover image would be the very first thing the audience would look at. I felt that the image that I chose
conveyed the approiate tone of my magazine to the reader through the use of mise-en-scene . The eye
contact though the male reader is effective as it establishes a personal connection. This was a convention
that I saw in nearly all the music magazines I researched making it a strong convention. His facial expression
is relaxed and serene reflecting the tone of the poem, it portrays the model in a positive light as well as
making him look inviting and peaceful. By placing an upcoming artist as my main image and using more well
known artists for my strapline and cover lines, I fulfilled my readers request for news and gossip as well as
hearing about new artists. The female model has her eyes closed reflecting the tranquil tone of the
magazine as well as creating an air of mystery, inviting the reader to pick up the magazine. Both of the
models language are relaxed and calm and they are connected through the male model’s hand on the
female’s headphones. This fits in with my audience as they are seen as care-free and relaxed in society
• The images also fit Carl Roger’s theory of an ideal partner as readers may want to have relationship similar to
the cover image. It also fits Micheal Brake’s respectable perception of youths as both models are portrayed
as creative, successful and productive. It can be argued that the male model fits David Gauntlett’s theory
that (male) magazines are about the social construction of masculinity due to his stoic facial expression and
him dominating the female model as he is above and has his hand possessively over her headphones. This
also fits in with my target audience as a large majority are male.
4. Language
• In terms of the language I used, I made sure to refer to my previous magazine research of magazines such as Vibe and the Source. This
influenced the language I decided to use. On the front cover, I used phrases such as ‘’New Arrivals and ‘’Club Bangers’’ to grab my reader’s
attention this was done in bold lettering and the colour Blue was used to make them contrast with the title. The use of the font ‘’Bebas’’
made the text look more striking and professional like.
• Throughout my contents and DPS, I chose to use personal pronouns as this was a music magazine convention when addressing your
audience. For example one of the features on my contents page reads ‘’Your questions, funny jokes and more’’, this was done to make the
reader feel like they’re involved with the magazine fitting in with Janice Winship’s theory of a magazine being a community for its audience.
Within the text of the Dps, there are many examples of slang being used. This was done to mimic the language used by my target audience
as well as create a more conversational tone for the DPS making the audience feel more connected to the story. The informal and humorous
tone also reflects the ideology of my magazine as well as the attitude of my readers.
• The language in the DPS further grabs my readers attention especially through the pull quote ‘’What, No Instagram, Not even twitter?’’ The
use of the rhetorical question invites the reader into the conversation as well as makes them think of their own response to the question. It
stands out due to the different font used and how it is positioned next to the main image similar to a caption for a newspaper. This is
significant as it ensures that the reader’s eye is directed to the pull quote before the main body of text. This was inspired form many
magazines such as Vibe and The Source.
5. Professionalism.
• I feel due to using the responses I received from my questionnaire
created on survey monkey, that the techniques I used to create my
product created a strong sense of professionalism within my product.
To make it believable, I ensured that I used wide variety of different
magazine conventions that wee taken from my research stages. This
allowed me to make a professional product that my audience would
believe and purchase.
