Gas diffusion properties were measured at different positions in pears using an optical sensor setup. Diffusivities were low in the skin but constant in the cortex tissue along the radial direction, while higher in the core. Diffusivities were higher in the vertical axis than the radial direction. O2 diffusivity was not affected by temperature, while temperature had a small effect on CO2 diffusivity. Picking date did not influence diffusivities. Diffusivities were smaller in brown tissue of disordered pears compared to healthy tissue.

This research work was carried out to evaluate the concentrations of some heavy metals (Pb, Cd, Cu, Zn and Mn) in roadside soil along Samaru-Giwa road, Zaria, Nigeria. Four sampling locations were selected (ABUTH, NAPRI, Marabar Guga and ABU Dam Quarters in Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria main campus which served as the control site). Soil samples were collected at 0, 50, 100 and 200 m distances from the roadside in three replicates, air dried at room temperature, sieved and kept in specimen bottles with appropriate labels pending analysis. Samples were digested and analyzed for concentrations of Lead (Pb), Cadmium (Cd), Copper (Cu), Zinc (Zn) and Manganese (Mn) using Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer (AAS). Concentrations of these heavy metals were observed to be significantly higher at 0 m than the other distances from the roadside and this decreased with increasing distance from the roadside. There was generally no significant difference in soil heavy metal concentration at 50- 200 m from the roadside. Soil lead concentration was mostly observed to be higher than that of all other metals studied. The concentrations of heavy metals observed in the soil samples was in the order of Pb>Mn>Zn >Cd >Cu. The contamination factors for individual heavy metal for the locations showed low to moderate contamination by the metals. Among the locations studied, Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital, (ABUTH) showed the highest concentration of the most heavy metals while ABU Dam Quarters (Control), had the lowest concentration of most of the heavy metals. The study showed that, nearness to the roadside increased the soil heavy metal concentrations and this could invariably influence the same in crops planted or farm produce being dried along the roadside.

The values of compression index, Cc and pcpe*, where pc is the preconsolidation pressure and pe* is the equivalent pressure on the compression curve of slurry (1.5wL) sample when the sample yields, of undisturbed samples are different from those of recomposed samples due to the effect of soil structure. The compression lines of slurry samples obtained from the relationship of void index and effective overburden pressure can be expressed by the equations with sufficient accuracy. The values of void index difference, ? Ivy can be used to find the effect of the enhanced resistance to compression of natural soil structure. If ? Ivy value is high, there will be high maximum value of compression index after destroying the resistance of soil structure caused by the aging effect. The proposed compression index ratio, r"™ obtained from the Iv-log p relationship can be considered as a useful index to represent the aging effect. In three neighbouring regions situated in southern Poland, differing in land use, soils, and type of forest vegetation, autecological studies on one of the most invasive alien species of the country, small balsam Impatients parviflora, were conducted. The habitat requirements of I. parviflora were estimated in 139 permanent plots, randomly distributed in various forest communities and varying in the abundance of the examined species. The forest stands were located either in nature reserves (Kraków-Częstochowa Uppland, Silesian Upland) or in old growth forests (Głubczyce Plateau). The physical and chemical properties of soiils (soil reaction, mineral and granulometric composition of substratum), litter depth, slope, and aspect were gathered and showed on ecodiagrams. The study shows that small balsam is a species with a wide ecological amplitude, what probably contributes to its invasiveness and enables success in colonizing and persisting in forest ground vegetation.

nanoparticles. A number of diatoms with partially opened valves were observed on the surface of the diatom,
which indicates that cell contents inside of diatoms could release the nanoparticles into the culture solution.
We believe that the film forming silica nanoparticles are either released by the diatoms during reproduction
or after cell death due to bacterial action. Further research will investigate whether the silica nanoparticles
are produced intracellular and then released or whether synthesis occurs in cell culture medium. This
approach provides an environmentally friendly means for fabricating silica nanoparticles for drug delivery,
disease diagnostics, artificial opal films, decorative coatings and novel optical materials.

Abstract:The level of natural radioactivity in soils and water of 74 samples collected from locations at Aden governorate south of Yemen was measured. Concentrations of radionuclides in soils and water samples were determined by gamma-ray spectrometer using a NaI (Tl) detector with specially designed shield. The mean activity level of the natural radionuclides 226Ra, 232Th and 40K is 30.41 ±2.4, 36.26 ±2.9 and 358.12±26.54 Bq kg-1, respectively. These values are well within values reported elsewhere in the country and in other countries with similar environments. The study also examined some radiation hazard indices. The mean values obtained are, 215±37Bq kg-1, 50.10±6 nGy h-1, 0.34mSv y-1, 0.30 and 0.34 for Radium Equivalent Activity (Raeq), Absorbed Dose Rates (D), Annual Effective Dose Rates (Eff Dose), External Hazard Index (Hex) and Internal Hazard Index (Hin) respectively. All the health hazard indices are well below their recommended limits. The paper recommends further studies to estimate internal and external doses from other suspected radiological sources to the population in Aden governorate.

This study analyzed the physicochemical properties of soil near a microbiology laboratory at the University of Ilorin in Nigeria over six sampling periods. The pH ranged from 7.10 to 7.82, moisture content was between 2.10-5.23%, organic matter was 3.42-4.70%, and water holding capacity was 0.28-0.53 ml/g. The soil texture was determined to be loamy sand with 89% sand, 7% silt, and 4% clay on average. The results indicate the soil properties were suitable for microbial growth and plant development.
Ultrafiltration is used in waste water treatment and process water purification to reduce pollution and costs. Membrane fouling reduces flux over time. Chemical cleaning can restore flux but may degrade membranes through chemical aging. This study examined the chemical resistance of four polymeric membranes to alkaline and acidic cleaning agents over time periods simulating one and two years of industrial use. Polyethersulfone and polysulfone membranes withstood all exposures with no degradation detected. Cellulose-based membranes showed minor changes at high alkaline pH, indicating hydrolysis of their chemical structure. Alkaline cleaning was compatible with cellulose membranes at pH below 11. The study investigated the microbiological quality of indoor and outdoor air of certain locations – the chapel, basement, classroom, hostel, as well as the old and new microbiology laboratories in Veritas University, Abuja. The settle plate technique using open Petri dishes containing different culture media was employed to collect samples daily for 5 weeks at 7 days intervals. Standard microbiological methods were employed for the identification of bacterial and fungal isolates. The bacterial counts ranged from 1.90×106 to 5.3×106 and 2.90 x 106 to 6.20 x 106 for indoor and outdoor air while the fungal counts ranged from 2.30 x106 to 3.70 x 106 and 2.10 x 106 to 4.40 x 106 also for indoor and outdoor air respectively. The bacterial isolates were identified to include Bacillus species and Staphylococcus aureus with percentage occurrence of 44.0% and 56.0% respectively. The results obtained also showed the occurrence of three major fungal species namely Aspergillus sp (60.0%), Rhodotolura sp (5.0%), and Rhizopus sp (35.00%). The bacterial isolate, Staphylococcus aureus (56.0%) was shown to be the most predominant airborne bacteria while Aspergillus sp (60.0%) was the most frequently isolated fungal species. The 95% confidence level statistical analysis showed a significant difference between the indoor and outdoor air microbial load of the selected locations. Data generated underline the usefulness of monitoring the air quality of the selected locations because the contamination of indoor and outdoor habitats can cause health problems and even an increase in human mortality.

This study examines how the presence of an endophytic fungus affects decomposition rates and fungal diversity in the grass Festuca thurberi along elevation gradients. In the first experiment, litter bags containing either endophyte-infected or endophyte-free F. thurberi litter were placed along three mountain transects to measure decomposition rates over time. The second experiment investigates how the endophyte affects host plant survival, growth, and biomass. Preliminary results show endophyte presence reduces plant biomass and survival. Oyster mushroom slices (Pleurotus ostreatus) were exposed to ɣ-radiation as a pretreatment and
solar dried to investigate the influence of irradiation on drying kinetics. Processing conditions
included exposure of mushrooms to 0 kGy (control), 0.5 kGy, 1.0 kGy, 1.5 kGy and 2.0 kGy
of ɣ-radiation at a dose rate of 1.7 kGy/h and drying at a mean temperature of 53.2±6.4°C.
Experimental drying data were fitted to 5 thin layer drying models by non-linear regression.
Irradiation was observed to enhance the drying rate of mushroom slices, with higher doses
causing faster moisture removal. Drying characteristics of slices exposed to lower dosages were
best described by Page’s model (R2=0.9878, 0.9967, 0.9925 correspondingly for “control” (0.0
kGy), 0.5 and 1.0 kGy while the Diffusion model best fit the data for those exposed to higher
doses of radiation (R2=0.9938, 0.9890 for 1.5 and 2.0 kGy respectively). Deff ranged from 1.88
to 2.44 x 10-08 and increase from “control”, 0.5 kGy, 1.0 kGy, 1.5 kGy to 2.0 kGy. Irradiation
of mushrooms as a pretreatment for drying increases moisture diffusivity and drying rate with
higher doses having the most effect.

Stored for different periods in different kinds of stores. Five potato varieties: Nicola, Bertita, Diamant, BR63-18
and Roslin Ruaka were stored for three periods: 12, 24 and 32 weeks in three types of stores, the Room
temperature Store, Diffused light store (DLS) and Air conditioned store. During storage, the experimental
design was completely randomized design in factorial combination of 5 potato varieties, 3 storage conditions
and 3 storage durations. There were 45 treatment combinations replicated 3 times. During field evaluation, a
split-split plot in Randomized complete block design was used with the potato varieties as the main plots, store
type as the sub plots and storage duration as the sub- sub plots. A fourth replication was added for growth
analysis study. Weekly temperatures and Relative humidity were recorded in each type of store. Leaf area index
measurement was done weekly from six weeks after planting (WAP) using the disc method. The result showed
that in all the varieties, storage durations and store types, LAI increased from 6WAP. Optimum LAI varied with
variety with Roslin Ruaka having the highest (3.45) while BR62-18 had the lowest (2.16) with other varieties
were in between. Leaf area index also varied with storage period with tubers stored for 32 weeks having the
highest LAI, followed by storage for 12 weeks while storage for 24 weeks resulted in lowest LAI. Leaf area
index also varied with store typewith seed tubers stored under Air condition having the highest followed by the
Diffused light store while the Room temperature store had the lowest. Leaf area duration (LAD) varied with
variety, storage period and store type. Roslin Ruaka had the highest LAD of 14.22 weeks while BR63-18 had the
lowest LAD of 10.28 weeks while the other varieties were in between. Seed tuber storage under Air condition
resulted in the highest LAD of 14.93 weeks followed by storage in Diffused light store with12.88 weeks while
Room temperature storage had the lowest LAD of 11.13 weeks. The differences in leaf area index and leaf area
duration between varieties, storage period and store type may be as a result of genotype, physiological age or environmental factors during subsequent crop growth in the field. Variety, storage period and store type with higher LAI values are expected to result in ahigher yield of crop compared to those with lower LAI values. LAI
values gives information about crop growth and subsequent yield of the crop.

This document summarizes a study that characterized fungal communities on coarse particulate organic matter (CPOM) like leaves and fine particulate organic matter (FPOM) in a stream in Nova Scotia, Canada using metabarcoding. Maple leaves were exposed in the stream for 4 weeks and 4 FPOM size fractions were collected over the same period by filtration. Pyrosequencing of the samples identified a total of 821 fungal operational taxonomic units, with 726 exclusive to particle samples and 47 to leaf samples. The study aimed to shed light on fungal processing of organic matter in streams and broaden understanding of freshwater fungal diversity.

Introduction
Speciation is the process by which new species arise through evolutionary processes. New species arise via a number of mechanisms referred to as modes of speciation. These are classified into three: allopathic, parapatric and sympatric speciation.
Purpose
This paper is a lab report sought to uniquely explain the allopathic mechanism of speciation. It attempts to answer what would happen to a species in a population if such were split into two by a geographical process like earthquake creating a physical barrier. (Coyne, & Orr 2004).
Hypothesis
The barrier creates a separation that causes each of the individual species to evolve into new other species.
Assumptions
The barrier created was such that there is no total or partial mixing of the two groups of a population. It is also assumed that each of the two created geographical regions has conditions necessary for survival of both of the two groups. (Darwin & Quammen 2008).
Discussion
A major factor fueling divergence of species into two or more other types is having a barrier to the flow of genes. This means there wont be interbreeding between populations and hence no gene pool sharing. In the case provided here, the geographic isolation will result into reproductive isolation forming new species. This mechanism is taken as the main mechanism of speciation. (Nosil 2012).
Conclusion
Creation of a barrier to gene flow is required for speciation to occur. Under allopatric mode, populations become isolated geographically isolated. They are exposed to various conditions and in response diverge genetically such that they will be unable to interbreed incase their ranges overlap later. A plant or animal species separated this way will yield new species with time.

Highly diverse biological system of solar salterns with different salinities, often provide high densities of mycofloral populations, makes the salterns excellent model systems for both its diverse and activity. In this study, diversity of halophilic fungi in six stations which includes reservoir, evaporator and crystallizer pond of both Marakkanam and Tuticorin saltpans in relation to environmental parameters were carried out for a period of two years. 95 species of halophilic fungi from water and sediment samples belongs to 41 genera were recorded in both saltpans. Aspergillus and Penicillium species were recorded as dominant, vast differences in growth of each isolate at different salt concentrations in the ponds were observed. This paper also elucidated the slight fluctuations in physico-chemical parameter among the ponds with respect to seasonal variations were also recorded.

Energy efficiency has been important since the latter part of the last century. The main object of this survey is to determine the energy efficiency knowledge among consumers. Two separate districts in Bangladesh are selected to conduct the survey on households and showrooms about the energy and seller also. The survey uses the data to find some regression equations from which it is easy to predict energy efficiency knowledge. The data is analyzed and calculated based on five important criteria. The initial target was to find some factors that help predict a person's energy efficiency knowledge. From the survey, it is found that the energy efficiency awareness among the people of our country is very low. Relationships between household energy use behaviors are estimated using a unique dataset of about 40 households and 20 showrooms in Bangladesh's Chapainawabganj and Bagerhat districts. Knowledge of energy consumption and energy efficiency technology options is found to be associated with household use of energy conservation practices. Household characteristics also influence household energy use behavior. Younger household cohorts are more likely to adopt energy-efficient technologies and energy conservation practices and place primary importance on energy saving for environmental reasons. Education also influences attitudes toward energy conservation in Bangladesh. Low-education households indicate they primarily save electricity for the environment while high-education households indicate they are motivated by environmental concerns.

This paper describes a speed control device for generating electrical energy on an electricity network based on the doubly fed induction generator (DFIG) used for wind power conversion systems. At first, a double-fed induction generator model was constructed. A control law is formulated to govern the flow of energy between the stator of a DFIG and the energy network using three types of controllers: proportional integral (PI), sliding mode controller (SMC) and second order sliding mode controller (SOSMC). Their different results in terms of power reference tracking, reaction to unexpected speed fluctuations, sensitivity to perturbations, and resilience against machine parameter alterations are compared. MATLAB/Simulink was used to conduct the simulations for the preceding study. Multiple simulations have shown very satisfying results, and the investigations demonstrate the efficacy and power-enhancing capabilities of the suggested control system.

Using data from 41 years in Patna’ India’ the study’s goal is to analyze the trends of how often it rains on a weekly, seasonal, and annual basis (1981−2020). First, utilizing the intensity-duration-frequency (IDF) curve and the relationship by statistically analyzing rainfall’ the historical rainfall data set for Patna’ India’ during a 41 year period (1981−2020), was evaluated for its quality. Changes in the hydrologic cycle as a result of increased greenhouse gas emissions are expected to induce variations in the intensity, length, and frequency of precipitation events. One strategy to lessen vulnerability is to quantify probable changes and adapt to them. Techniques such as log-normal, normal, and Gumbel are used (EV-I). Distributions were created with durations of 1, 2, 3, 6, and 24 h and return times of 2, 5, 10, 25, and 100 years. There were also mathematical correlations discovered between rainfall and recurrence interval.
Findings: Based on findings, the Gumbel approach produced the highest intensity values, whereas the other approaches produced values that were close to each other. The data indicates that 461.9 mm of rain fell during the monsoon season’s 301st week. However, it was found that the 29th week had the greatest average rainfall, 92.6 mm. With 952.6 mm on average, the monsoon season saw the highest rainfall. Calculations revealed that the yearly rainfall averaged 1171.1 mm. Using Weibull’s method, the study was subsequently expanded to examine rainfall distribution at different recurrence intervals of 2, 5, 10, and 25 years. Rainfall and recurrence interval mathematical correlations were also developed. Further regression analysis revealed that short wave irrigation, wind direction, wind speed, pressure, relative humidity, and temperature all had a substantial influence on rainfall.
Originality and value: The results of the rainfall IDF curves can provide useful information to policymakers in making appropriate decisions in managing and minimizing floods in the study area.

al., 2002). This disorder is due to membrane damage, result-
ing in cell death and as a consequence the leaking of cell
liquid into the intercellular space, possibly affecting the dif-
fusion coefficients. Therefore, it would be interesting to know
the gas diffusivity of brown tissue of a disordered pear. Also,
reducing the temperature has been known to be the main fac-
tor in retarding the metabolism of fruit and extending the shelf
life of the produce. The effect of temperature on the respi-
ration has been described using Arrhenius’ Law (Cameron
et al., 1994; Lammertyn et al., 2001b). However, the effect
of temperature on gas diffusion should be known as well
to understand the internal atmosphere corresponding to the
external atmosphere conditions at a certain temperature.
Several methods have been developed to measure the
gas transport properties of various horticultural commodi-
ties (Cameron and Yang, 1982; Banks, 1985) for which it
was assumed that the skin was the only barrier to gas dif-
fusion and the fruit internal gas concentration was constant.
Fick’s first law of diffusion has some limitations to estimate
diffusion properties of fruit in this way since the concentra-
tion gradient in the skin or tissue is often transient. Further,
the assumptions of constant internal gas concentration within
the fruit and considering the skin as the only barrier to gas
diffusion do not hold for all types of commodities, espe-
cially not for fruit with a high tissue density. Recently, some
authors (Lammertyn et al., 2001a; Schotsmans et al., 2003,
2004; Ho et al., 2006) have been studying gas exchange prop-
erties at the tissue level. Lammertyn et al. (2001a,b) and
Schotsmans et al. (2003) determined the diffusion proper-
ties of the tissue taking into account tissue respiration. Their
measurementset-upconsistedoftwochambersseparatedbya
tissue sample. The changes in the gas concentration in the two
chambers were measured after applying an initial gas con-
centration difference between the two chambers. Lammertyn
et al. (2001a) determined on this way diffusion properties
of pear tissue taking into account respiration. However, the
measurement of gas diffusion properties of fruit tissue is dif-
ficult due to the available gas measurement techniques, the
inherentbiologicalvariabilityofbiologicalmaterialaswellas
fast deterioration and respiration activity of cut tissue sam-
ples. Recently, Ho et al. (2006) developed a measurement
set-up for gas diffusivities in tissue using fluorescent opti-
cal probes. The optical sensors produced good informative
O2 and CO2 partial pressure versus time profiles. Diffusivi-
ties of O2 and CO2 were estimated based on a finite element
model describing simultaneous O2 and CO2 gas transport as
well as respiration in the tissue. The authors found that the
diffusivity of CO2 in the tissue was one order of magnitude
higher than O2 diffusivity.
The specific objectives of this study were (1) to deter-
mine the O2 and CO2 diffusivities at different positions and
directions in the pear and (2) to study whether the diffu-
sion properties of pear tissue were affected by maturity stage,
storage browning-inducing conditions and temperature. The
novel measurement setup described by Ho et al. (2006) will
be used for this purpose.
2. Materials and methods
2.1. Fruit material
Pears (Pyrus communis cv. Conference) were harvested
in September at the Fruitteeltcentrum (Rillaar, Belgium). To
investigate maturity effects on diffusivity properties of pear
during storage, pears were harvested at the commercial har-
vest time (8 September 2004) and a late harvest time (22
September 2004). Then, pears were cooled and stored accord-
ing to commercial protocols for a period of 21 days at −0.5 ◦C
preceding CA storage (2.5 kPa O2, 0.7 kPa CO2 at −0.5 ◦C)
until they were used for the experiments.
An investigation of the O2 and CO2 diffusivities at differ-
ent positions in the pear was carried out. A schematic view of
sampling is given in Fig. 1. In order to assess the distribution
of diffusivities along the radial direction, in total 44 tissue
samples from 14 different pears were taken along the radial
direction at the equatorial region of the fruit from the cortex
to the core of the pear. Additionally, the diffusivities of seven
skin samples from seven pears were measured. The sampling
procedure is described in detail in Ho et al. (2006). Because
of the shape of the pear we did not expect large gradients
in the two tangential directions perpendicular to the radial
direction. It is, therefore, not important to know the diffusivi-
ties in these directions accurately. The sample position on the
radial direction was expressed as the relative distance (x/R)
from the center of the pear. In addition, sampling was also
done in the vertical axis of the pear from top to bottom. In
the vertical axis, the sample position was expressed as the
relative distance (y/L) from the stem end of the pear. Four-
teen samples of 14 different pears were used to measure the
diffusivity in the vertical axis.
To study storage condition effects on diffusivity proper-
ties, pears were stored according to commercial protocols
for a period of 21 days at −0.5 ◦C preceding CA stor-
age (described above) and browning-inducing conditions
(0.5 kPa O2, 5 kPa CO2 at −0.5 ◦C). Pears in browning-
inducing conditions were stored at least 6 months until the
presence of the storage disorder (browning) was observed.

disordered pears for each combination of picking time and
storage condition were taken to measure diffusion properties.
The samples were taken in the cortex tissue along the radial
direction at relative positions from the center ranging from
0.4 to 0.8.
2.2. Diffusion measurement
The set-up developed by Ho et al. (2006) was used. The
set-up consisted of two chambers separated by a disked shape
tissue sample (Fig. 2). Due to different gas concentrations in
the measurement and flushing chambers, diffusion took place
through the tissue sample in between. The method involved
measuring O2 and CO2 partial pressure profiles as a func-
tion of time in a small measurement chamber closed from
the environment with the tissue disk. At the initial time, the
measurement chamber contained 30 kPa O2, 3 kPa CO2 and
67 kPa N2. In the flushing chamber the gas concentration was
maintained constant by gas flushing with N2 containing 5 kPa
O2, 8 kPa CO2, at 10 L/h. O2 concentrations were chosen high
enough to avoid fermentation activity. Additionally the O2
and CO2 gradients were chosen in a way that the resulting
O2 and CO2 fluxes through the sample would compensate
each other avoiding a total pressure difference between the
two chambers. Total pressure difference is to be avoided as it
would result in hydraulic gas transport rather than diffusion
transport (Ho et al., 2006). The gas mixtures were prepared
from pure gases by means of mass flow controllers (5850 S,
Brooks Instruments, The Netherlands). The O2 and CO2 con-
centrations were measured in the measurement chamber with
fluorescent optical probes (Foxy-Resp and FCO2-R, Ocean
Optics, Duiven, The Netherlands). Pressure sensors (PMP
4070, GE Druck, Germany) monitored the pressure changes
in each chamber during the measurements.
Most of the measurements were carried out at 20 ± 0.3 ◦C.
Except when investigating temperature effects on diffu-
sivity properties of pear, experiments were carried out at
temperatures of 5, 10 and 20 ◦C. The temperature of the
system was kept constant by submerging the set-up in a
temperature-controlled water bath (F10-HC, Julabo Labor
Technik GmbH, Seelbach, Germany). To take into account
the temperature dependency of the optical sensor signals, the
sensors were recalibrated for each measurement at a different
temperature. Eight cortex tissue samples were taken from the
fruit to measure the O2 and CO2 diffusivities at each tempera-
ture condition. Samples of cortex tissue were taken along the
radial direction at a relative position x/R between 0.4 and 0.8
(Fig. 1). Sampling and experimental procedures have been
described in more details by Ho et al. (2006).
2.3. Respiration measurement
A non-competitive inhibition model (Peppelenbos and
van’t Leven, 1996) was used to describe the respiration of
the tissue as follows:

sumption, PO2 (kPa) the O2 partial pressure, PCO2 (kPa) the
CO2 partial pressure, Kmn,CO2 (kPa) the Michaelis–Menten
constant for non-competitive CO2 inhibition, rqox the respira-
tion quotient at high O2 partial pressure, and RO2 (mol/m3s)
and RCO2 (mol/m3s) is the O2 consumption rate and CO2
production rate of the sample, respectively. Since gas dif-
fusion was studied at a high O2 partial pressure (from 5 to
35 kPa O2), no fermentative CO2 production term needed to
be included in Eq. (2).
The respiration parameters of Eqs. (1) and (2) at 20 ◦C
were measured by Ho et al. (2006) on similar samples as
used in the current study but on other pears from the same
harvest batch and are listed in Table 1. To study the effect of
temperature on the maximal O2 consumption rate (Vm,O2 ),
respiration measurements were carried out at 5, 10 and 20 ◦C
at 30 kPa O2 combined with 0 kPa of CO2 as described by Ho
et al. (2006). The samples were prepared in the same manner
as the samples for the diffusion set-up to approach the same
amount of wounding and respiration. The temperature effect
on Vm,O2 was described by Arrhenius’s law.

2.4. Respiration diffusion model and parameter
estimation
The model construction and parameter estimation pro-
cedure was described by Lammertyn et al. (2001a). The

Γ is the surface of the tissue exposed to the flushing chamber.
Index ∞ refers to the gas atmosphere in the flushing chamber.
The concentration change in the measurement chamber
was due to the diffusion of the gas through the tissue and the
respiration taking place in the tissue. The tissue respiration
as a function of the O2 and CO2 partial pressure described
above was incorporated in Eq. (3).
Eqs. (3) and (4) were solved using the finite element
method in one dimension using the FemLab finite element
code (Femlab 3.1, Comsol AB, Stockholm). The gases in the
measurement chamber and the sample tissue were considered
astwomaterialsconsistingof20elementseachresultingin41
nodes in total. The diffusion coefficient of the gas molecules
in air at 20 ◦C was set equal to 6 × 10−5 m2/s (Lide, 1999).
The sample was modeled as the second material, for which
the diffusion coefficient was to be estimated. The gas trans-
fer from the flushing chamber to the tissue or the skin was
expressed by Eq. (4) as a convection boundary condition. The
convective mass transfer coefficient was taken as very high
(1 × 106 m/s). This means it was assumed that no resistance
to gas transport occurred at this interface.
An iterative least squares estimation procedure written in
MATLAB (The Mathworks, Inc., Natick, USA) was used to
determine gas diffusivities of the pear tissues by fitting the
model solutions to the measured O2 and CO2 concentration
change profiles.
The position dependent O2 and CO2 diffusivities of the
cortex tissue along the radial direction were described by the
following expression:

with Dc (m2/s) is the diffusivity in the center of the pear, x/R
the relative position along the radial direction of the fruit,
D0 (m2/s) the asymptotic diffusivity and a is the coefficient
which determines how fast diffusivity D decreases towards
D0 along the radial direction. Eq. (5) was fitted to the data
by non-linear regression. A logarithmic transformation of the
data was applied to stabilize the variance.
To investigate the variability of diffusivity within a pear
and between pears, an analysis of variance was carried out
on the gas diffusivities of the four samples per pear of nine
pears that were measured along the radial axis in the cortex
tissue at the relative position from the center ranging from
0.35 to 0.9.
Estimation of the activation energy described by Arrhe-
nius’s Law, and statistical analyses were performed using
the SAS/STAT software 8.2 (SAS Institute Inc., Cary NC.
USA).
3. Results
3.1. Position-dependent diffusivity in a fruit
To study the effect of position in the fruit on gas diffusion,
tissue samples were taken along the radial direction at the
equatorial region of the fruit from the skin to the core of the
pear as well as in the vertical axis from the top to the bottom
of the pear. The skin had the lowest diffusivity values which
were (1.86 ± 0.78) × 10−10 and (5.06 ± 3.15) × 10−10 m2/s
for O2 and CO2, respectively. Along the radial direction, O2
and CO2 diffusivities seemed uniform throughout the cortex
tissue while diffusivities were high in the core of the pear
(Fig. 3). CO2 diffusivities were much higher compared to
O2 diffusivity. The model parameters of Eq. (5) for the O2
and CO2 diffusivity along the radial direction are given in
Table 2. A high variation among the samples was also found.
The analysis of variance carried out on the O2 and CO2 dif-
fusivities from the samples coming from the relative position
from the center ranging from 0.35 to 0.9 showed that the vari-
ability of the O2 and CO2 diffusivity within a pear was the
same as the variability between pears.

Since the coefficient a was 0.1 for both O2 and CO2 diffu-
sivityalongtheradialdirection,thediffusivityalmostreached
the value of D0 at positions near the skin (Fig. 3). Therefore,
D0 can be considered as diffusivity near the skin.
Gas diffusion along the vertical axis of the pear was more
or less constant (Fig. 4). Results showed that the gas dif-
fusivities in the tissue along the vertical axis of the pear
were (11.1 ± 7.2) × 10−10 and (6.97 ± 3.79) × 10−9 m2/s for
O2 and CO2, respectively. Gas diffusion properties in the
vertical axis were higher than along the equatorial radial
direction.
3.2. Maturity effect and storage condition on gas
diffusivities
To study the effect of fruit maturity and storage con-
ditions on the gas diffusion properties, the optimal picked
pears and late picked pears were stored at normal storage and
browning-inducing conditions. During 6 months of storage
in browning-inducing conditions, brown heart disorder was
found in the late picked pears only. The tissue of disordered
pears was classified into two classes. Non-browning tissue of
disordered pears was classified as sound tissue and browning
tissue of disordered pears was categorized as brown tissue.
Diffusion properties of tissue of healthy pears, sound tissue
of brown pears and brown tissue of brown pears are shown in
Fig. 5.

In healthy pears, the average O2 diffusivity in the tis-
sue of the optimal picked pears and late picked pears
was (2.87 ± 0.45) × 10−10 and (2.45 ± 0.35) × 10−10 m2/s,
respectively, while the average CO2 diffusivity in the tis-
sue of the optimally picked pears and late picked pears
was (2.6 ± 0.36) × 10−9 and (2.22 ± 0.72) × 10−9 m2/s. The
CO2 diffusivity of optimally picked pears and late picked
pears was higher than the O2 diffusivity. Large variability
was found among the experimental values so that there were
no significant differences between the optimally picked pears
and late picked pears.
The average O2 diffusivity of the sound tissue and brown
tissue of late picked pears in browning-inducing conditions
was (2.46 ± 0.65) × 10−10 and (1.85 ± 0.64) × 10−10 m2/s,
respectively, while the average CO2 diffusivity of the
sound tissue and brown tissue of late picked pears were
(1.58 ± 0.76) × 10−9 and (1.42 ± 0.35) × 10−9 m2/s. The O2
and CO2 diffusivities of brown tissue in late picked pears
were less than those of healthy tissue of optimal picked pears
(Fig. 5).
Due to the large variability, the diffusivities of sound tissue
of brown pear were not different from the diffusivities of
healthy tissue of late pears.
3.3. Temperature affected on respiration and gas
diffusivity of tissue
Arrhenius’ law was applied to study the effect of the tem-
perature on the respiration as well as diffusion properties of
pear tissue. Three temperature conditions (5, 10 and 20 ◦C)
were compared for their effect on the respiration and diffu-
sivity in cortex tissue.

In Fig. 6, the Arrhenius plot of the maximal O2 con-
sumption rate (Vm,O2 ) is shown. The Arrhenius equa-
tion described the experiment well as was confirmed by
the high R2 value (R2 = 0.98). The results showed that
tissue respiration was strongly affected by the tempera-
ture since the activation energy for tissue respiration was
80.2 ± 5.6 kJ/mol.
Samples of cortex tissue were taken along the radial direc-
tion to study the effect of temperature on O2 and CO2 dif-
fusivities. Large variability of O2 and CO2 diffusivity was
observed. The CO2 diffusivity was much higher than the O2
diffusivity. Arrhenius plots of O2 and CO2 diffusivities are
shown in Fig. 7. Since the activation energy for O2 diffusivity
Ea,DO2 witha95%confidenceintervalwas(−9 ± 13) kJ/mol,
there was no significant temperature effect on the O2 dif-
fusivity. The activation energy for CO2 diffusivity Ea,DCO2
was 17 ± 13 kJ/mol. A statistically significant effect of tem-
perature on the CO2 diffusivity was found but it was small
compared to the biological variability which was concluded
from the low R2 value (R2 = 0.15).
4. Discussion
4.1. Position-dependent diffusivities in a fruit
The gas diffusivity experiment along the radial direction
showed that O2 and CO2 diffusivities were small in the skin,
uniform throughout the cortex tissue and were high in the core
of the pear. Similar results were also found by Schotsmans et
al. (2003). The diffusivity appeared to be the smallest in the
skin, larger in the cortex region and the largest in the core.
However, due to the very high variability this trend was not
statistically significant.
A report by Schotsmans (2003) showed that diffusivity
distribution along the radial direction in ‘Jonica’ apples was
different. The diffusivity was small in the skin, significantly
larger in the cortex tissue and again significantly smaller near
the core. The apple tissue showed the core had a low intercel-
lular air space volume (11%) which might have resulted in
a significant reduction of gas transport while the intercellu-
lar air space volume of apple cortex tissue was substantially
higher (19%) (Schotsmans, 2003).
Specific features found in cortex tissue are sclereids. The
sclereids seem to be concentrated in the outer cortex tis-
sue and their amount decreases toward the core. Locally,
these sclereid groups can pose local barriers for gas trans-
port. This would result in local adverse gas conditions
and thus trigger the local development of storage disorders
(Schotsmans, 2003). Different amounts and distribution of
sclereids between and in pears might partly explain the highly
biologicalvariabilityofthepearsamples.Postharvestproduct
behavior is inherently affected by the omnipresent biological
variation (Hertog et al., 2002). Biological variation in diffu-
sivities of the pear could be due to for instance difference in
shape and size of the pears during development, the amount
of lignified cells, irregular cell distribution, growing condi-
tions which may depend on the position in the tree (Ho et al.,
2006).
A higher diffusivity along the vertical axis than along the
radial direction was observed. It could be that the vascular

bundles arranged in the direction from top to bottom of the
pear facilitated the gas transport. Therefore, continuity of gas
transport channels in this direction could be better than along
the radial direction and explain the high diffusivity in the
vertical axis compared to the values along the radial direction.
From our experiments, it appeared that the O2 diffusivity
was smaller than the CO2 diffusivity. CO2 has a higher solu-
bility in water than O2. For instance, the concentration of CO2
in equilibrium with 8 kPa (3.28 mol/m3) CO2 in the gas phase
is 3.1 mol CO2 /m3 at 20 ◦C in water while for O2 the con-
centrationinwaterinequilibriumwith30 kPa(12.31 mol/m3)
for O2 in the gas phase at 20 ◦C is 0.41 mol/m3. The diffu-
sivity of CO2 in air and water at 20 ◦C are 1.6 × 10−5 and
1.67 × 10−9 m2/s,respectively(Lide,1999).Therefore,asig-
nificant portion of CO2 can be transported in the liquid phase
as well while O2 is mainly transported in the gas phase of the
intercellular space of pear fruit tissue. This can explain the
high diffusion coefficient of CO2 compared to O2 diffusion
coefficient.
4.2. Maturity effect and storage condition on gas
diffusivities
Reports about gas exchange properties, more specifically
skin resistance of fruit, are not very consistent. While some
authors (Park et al., 1993) found changes during the harvest-
ing period, others did not. Elgar et al. (1999) found that the
skin resistance to gas diffusion of ‘Braeburn’ apples was not
influenced by harvest date. Schotsmans et al. (2002) reported
no influence of harvest date on skin resistance to gas dif-
fusion for ‘Jonica’ and ‘Braeburn’ apples nor for ‘Doyenn´e
du Comice’ and ‘Conference’ pears. Also no change of dif-
fusivity of O2 and CO2 in cortex tissue of ‘Conference’
pear during 3 weeks before and 3 weeks after the commer-
cial harvesting date was found by Schotsmans et al. (2003).
Schotsmans et al. (2003) reported an average diffusivity of
O2 and CO2 in fruit cortex tissue of (3.8 ± 0.4) × 10−10
and (3.8 ± 0.5) × 10−9 m2/s, respectively. The results of this
experiment also revealed no differences between O2 and CO2
diffusivityoftheoptimallypickedpearsandlatepickedpears.
Even though significant structural and composition changes
occur during the maturation period, this does not necessarily
imply that the diffusivity of the respiratory gases (O2, CO2)
is influenced by these changes (Schotsmans et al., 2003).
Browning of pear tissue is related to membrane damage
due to low O2 and high CO2 concentrations under controlled
atmosphere storage. This phenomenon is probably caused by
a slow gas transport rate with small diffusion in the tissue
leading to a shortage of O2 and accumulation of CO2 in the
centerofthefruit.Thelowerdiffusivityvaluesofbrowntissue
might be due to the fact that the intercellular space system
of brown pear might have low cross-section dimension of air
channels, restricted length and reduced continuity as most of
the intercellular space is flooded by leaking cells. This could
lead to a low efficiency of the intercellular space system as a
means of aerating the tissue.
4.3. Temperature effect on respiration and gas diffusivity
of tissue
Temperature is the most important factor to control fruit
metabolism during storage. The influence of the temperature
onthemaximalO2 consumptionrateisgivenbytheactivation
energy. The activation energy of the maximal O2 consump-
tion rate of pear tissue in this experiment (80.2 ± 5.6 kJ/mol)
was close to the value of intact pear (64.6 ± 4.8 kJ/mol)
described by Lammertyn et al. (2001b).
Temperature effects on respiration rate are well known,
however, attempts to characterize temperature influence on
tissue diffusion have not revealed substantial temperature
effects (Schotsmans, 2003). Moreover, a report by Dadzie
et al. (1993) showed that there was no temperature effect on
skin permeation. Calculating the activation energy of CO2
diffusivity in air and water from literature data (Lide, 1999)
shows values of 6.5 and 19.5 kJ/mol, respectively. The activa-
tion energy of the CO2 diffusion in tissue found in the current
study was in between that in the gas and water phase and can
be considered in agreement with the literature data. The sol-
ubility of O2 in water is low compared to CO2 and therefore
most of the O2 transport occurs in the gas phase. Further-
more, it is likely that O2 and CO2 have the same behavior in
the gas phase. Hence, the low activation energy for diffusivity
of CO2 found in the literature can be considered in agreement
with the value Ea,DO2 of (−9 ± 13) kJ/mol found for O2 in
the current experiments. Temperature has a small influence
on diffusion while it has a large effect on respiration, since
the activation energy for the latter was 80.2 ± 5.6 kJ/mol.
Therefore, the gas diffusivity will not increase much due
to an increase of temperature while the respiration rate on
the other hand will rapidly increase. This could result in O2
depletion and CO2 excess in the pear at high temperature and
development of large gas gradients that can lead to storage
disorders (Schotsmans, 2003). Storage temperatures should
be low enough to have low respiration activity resulting in
small gas gradients.
5. Conclusion
The diffusivity of O2 and CO2 at different positions in the
pear was investigated. Both the diffusivity of O2 and CO2
were low at the skin. Along the equatorial radial direction of
thepear,thediffusivityofbothO2 andCO2 inthecortextissue
was almost constant while they were high in the core of the
pear.Gasdiffusioncoefficientsintheverticalaxiswerehigher
than along the equatorial radial direction. The O2 diffusivity
was not influenced by temperature while temperature had a
statistically significant effect on CO2 diffusivity although it
was small compared to its biological variability. Picking date
had no effect on the gas diffusivity of tissue. Diffusivities in
brown tissue of disordered pears were lower than diffusivities
in sound tissue irrespective whether the sound tissue came
from a healthy or a disordered pear.
