Reflection on images:
What does the clothing codes tell you?
The model in my photo is wearing very causal comfortable clothes which reflect her feelings about
college. This implies it’s a relaxed enjoyable place which would appeal to the target audience of
students. The model is wearing a dark red jumper which is gender neutral and suggests the
magazine isn’t targeted at one gender. My model is holding a mobile phone which appeals to
students because everyone has one.
Facial expression:
On the front cover my model is smiling using direct address. This creates a friendly feel to the
magazine and suggests she is happy being part of the college. The direct address creates a
connection with the reader and invites the target audience to read and buy the magazine.
Posture:
My model is presenting a very relaxed tone to the cover by not having formal posture. She is
slouching and appears comfotable in her surroundings which suggets the college is an easy place to
be. The image also shows the model facing towards the camera which makes the reader feel as if
they are sat at the table too.
What roles and stereotypes are being presented or challenged?
The model on my cover conforms to the college magazine conventions because she is young (like the
readers) and in a popular location of the college. If my model was outside of college in an unfamilliar
location the students wouldnt be able to relate to the magazine and if the model was much older or
younger this would go against the conventions because the reader wouldnt connect. The model on
my cover is female which could be seen as appealing to female readers but i was careful not to use
stereotypically female colours; for instance pink. This keeps my magazine gender neautral.
Is the representation of race significant:
No, there is no emphasis on the race of the model in any way on the front cover of the magazine
because there are many races in the college which would make the target audience drastically
limited if it was aimed at a specific race.
Who is the magazine aimed at? How does it attract the target audience?
My magazine is for Solihull Sixthform College which only had students aged 16-18 so this is who i
chose to aim the magazine at. My magazine wasnt dedicated to one interest e.g. Art or Sport, this
allows a wide range of people to be interested in the magazine. My magazine is gender neautral
because no stereotypical colouring was used. I chose to photograph the model in the Costa canteen
section fo college because i wanted the main image to relate to the promotions i was going to
include e.g ‘free costa coffee inside’.
How text and images are used to address the audience?
I used simple casual language in my magazine because its aimed at teenagers. If i used formal diffuclt
language it would put young people off reading the contents inside and would suit a mature age
group.
