How does your media product
represent particular social groups?
         Evaluation Part 2
What is a social group?
• A social group can be defined as 2 or more humans who
interact with each other, share similar interests and have a
sense of unity. Social groups can come in various sizes
varieties. For example, a society can be seen as a large
    social group.
Gender-
My magazine, is targeted at girls in particular teenagers. The
magazines I have been using as templates like top of the pops
and I heart pop, there issues are ,mainly directed towards
teenage girls. On my front cover, there is a female artist and I
am aiming on using this to inspire and act as a role model for
my readers. Also, the female artist is wearing very casual
clothing, so this creates a good calm atmosphere for the
audience. Furthermore, having a picture of Rihanna on the
front cover advertising how she has changed her hair colour it
shows that my reader will be very focused on there
appearance. Lastly, the use of free boy posters acts as a sex
appeal to my reader. Having the use of the male pictures
attracts and incises females to want to buy my magazine. This
represents that my social group is aimed at females, as they
are boy-addicted and they care what they look like.
Age-
The age at which my magazine is aimed at is at 14-17 years
old. Teenage girls at that age, tend to look inspiration and a
role model, as at this age they can become very vulnerable.
When, I picked pop as my genre for my magazine as it the
most popular genre with young teenage girls. The use of the
bright colours on my front cover, like pink and yellow, are
quite feminine and are more suitable for young teenagers
rather than someone who is in there 20’s.
Teenage girls are very prone to doodling different t shapes as
they can be very creative. On my front cover I included a
bright yellow star shape, to attract my social group, as this is
a convention which I believed was essential to follow in order
to incise more readers.
Class-
The class I have selected for my social group is middle class.,
as this is very conventional is most pop magazines. The price
of my magazine at £2.30, is reflected to be seen as a
reasonable price for someone in the middle class social
group. People, in a lower class social class may not spend
that much on a magazine , and upper class people may think
that this is a cheap price. Therefore, I believe this is a very
good price for my magazine. However, the content in my
magazine I believe anyone can read whether they are upper
class, middle class or lower class, as all girls no matter what
there class is, can wish to be like celebrities that I have
included in my magazine.
Ethnicity-
The majority of my magazine includes and is aimed
at white Caucasian people and artists. However, my
magazine isn't to be portrayed at one ethnicity
throughout. Although, my main picture on my front
cover is of a white person, I do have a smaller
picture of Rihanna on my magazine. Therefore, I
hope that my magazine will attract more of an
ethnic variety. I decided that I didn’t want my
magazine to be based on one ethnic social group,
so I intentionally included different ethnicity's to
attract a wider audience.
Background-
In my magazine, I haven't aimed it at a specific audience,
because I believe this would decrease the amount of potential
readers. My main model on the front cover is to be seen as
from quite a wealthy family with a good education and good
up-bringing. Throughout my magazine though I have included
artists and celebrity's who may be wealthy and successful
now but they might have had a poor background growing up.
Many artists and celebrity's who are successful now are
sometimes shown in the media to have had a very tough
childhood, however I think having examples of a variety of
people will appeal to more people and the reader may be able
to relate to a particular artist. My magazine doesn't have a
limited audience when it comes to background because I want
a variety of wealthy and not wealthy back grounded people to
both enjoy my magazine.
Interests-
In my social group which I hope to target my reader would
typically be very girly and feminine. There main interests
would be boys, fashion and makeup as well as pop music.
In my magazine I have included a popular convention which Is
seen a lot in pop magazines. This is advertising free posters of
men artists which the reader may see as a sex appeal. Also,
on my contents page I have included photos of a model on a
fashion runway and pictures of shoes. When the reader see’s
these photos they will be intrigued and what to purchase and
read my magazine. Furthermore, on my front cover, I advertise
that my magazine has tips on how to “keep your makeup on
all day”. Again this would attract to the sort of interests I
expect my social group to have. As, well as boys I included
many girl pop stars who my reader may wish to look up to or
use as a role model.
Overall…
I believe social groups are represented
positively in my magazine and I believe they
follow the typical social group which would
read a pop magazine like mine.
I think I have followed the conventions of
other magazines which I used as a style
model , so I have made a true representation
of a social group which my magazine would
appeal too.
