2. Q2) how does you magazine represent/
display certain social groups
• My magazine represents the social group of the working class and the lower
middle class, Merge takes on those who are the youngsters in the lower
middle and working class. Although it is not very clear, I have done this
deliberately because my magazine shouldn’t need to belong to certain social
class it is very much for everybody that is interested in the chosen genres of
my magazine, also by committing my magazine to a particular social class it
would just cause stereotyping and minor social class exclusion.
• On the other hand as my magazine is only £3.00 so it is more or less
targeted at the masses in society meaning it is very affordable for both
classes and anybody that would be interested in my magazine. Making my
magazine only three pound is very friendly to the working class as they
might not have enough to buy an issue each week so instead my magazine
has been monthly so that they will be able to afford to have £3.00 with them
for them to buy a new issue each month.
3. Age representation
Age has been represented through the usage of the model, the
readers can clearly see that the model is of a young age (18) and
looks rebellious(as rebellion and being care free is associated with
being young) in general she looks as if she’s in her prime therefore
it represents the nature of being young and everything that
associates itself with being young, meaning from the look of the
model and the front cover it is aimed to represent those who don’t
mind breaking the rules, those who want to be unique and uphold
their own individuality. Although in my pitch I mentioned that it
was for those who are aged between 15-28 I have decided that
although some 35 year olds enjoy the genres of my magazine it is
more suitable for ages between 15-28 which is more of a suitable
age.
4. Gender representation
Whereas gender, my magazine is devoted to males and females but as the
cover of my magazine is a female it might appear to be targeted towards a
female audience more than a male audience and because it is produced by
female it will more or less have a feminine touch to the magazine meaning
that women will feel as if its targeted towards them because the reader sees a
female on the cover and would have the feeling its produced by a women
because of the layout of the magazine, however its targeted towards males too
as my magazine uses synthetic personalisation although my model isn’t
looking directly at my readers that would make it appealing to the male
audience as she seems rebellious and mysterious and the male audience would
be attracted to this because they would want to know who my model is and
the enigma of why she isn’t looking at them.
5. Ethnicity
• My magazine doesn’t represent a certain ethnicity as my genre doesn’t
really have a type of ethnicity that would listen to it. There is only a mixture
of people that listen to the mix of my genres therefore to symbolise a type of
ethnicity wouldn’t be needed. I have purposely done this to help remove the
sense of stereotyping as this may deter a growing audience for my magazine
because some ethnic groups may feel as if they cannot read it as it is mostly
associated with a specific ethnic group.
6. Subcultures
• Whereas subcultures my magazine would relate to skaters and hipsters but
it’s also targeted towards those who tend to dress retro as those people who
do like to dress like this tend to listen to the two styles of the music and if
it’s not one side of my chosen genre then it’s the other side. Skaters, hipsters
and people that listen and dress retro are normally of many different colours
and they vary in ethnicity so it was very hard thinking about which
ethnicity would appeal to this magazine so instead to have an actual target.
The audience I have targeted would give my magazine an actual group of
people that would read my magazine. Although I have not made that clear in
my front cover and DPS I have made it clear in my contents page in the
listing of what’s to come in the magazine if it were real as what I have
included in my magazine is of the nature of skaters, hipsters and those who
like to dress retro.
