Audience characteristics
I think my work will appeal to my audience because it is everyday people talking about common thoughts about
the environment. This is in contrast to an environmental expert talking about things most people can’t
understand or relate to and hence are unlikely to engage with. The fact these are just people I’ve interviewed in
the street makes the videos more relatable, ‘oh, I was wondering that too.’ or ‘yeah that’s how I feel.’ This
encourages people to go to the website to learn about it or feel they are not alone and there is something they
can do to change and expand their knowledge about wildlife. A good example of this was when the big blue guy
talked about plastic. I think it is a common issue of people not knowing which plastic to use and either not
knowing where to find out of not bothering to find out. This video covers both of these issues as it gives people
the website details to look at and encourages/reminds people to look it up. Another thing about my videos are
there is no scale to the problems. There is no specification, in my research I found that big problems can
overwhelm people so they try to ignore it and small problems can seem insignificant and they have ‘better
things to do.’ I also know people handle problems differently, some break it down and some like to look at the
big picture. In my videos the viewer can take what is being said however they like, as the whole world, just the
UK or just the park down the road. This hopefully will give more viewers something to think about, and
something they might care about. They are all important matters and are all worth acting upon but some issues
will seem more important than others depending upon the viewer. I also think there is even something here for
people who are understanding of environmental matters but just don’t act upon it. For example, they may be
surprised by people’s lack of awareness and knowledge “ I don’t really understanding anything about the
environment” or “ is there such a thing as British wildlife… I don’t know” this may stimulate them to get involved
as they realize everyday people are unaware of how to help the environment.
Design
Colour schemes. I made three short videos for my project and the colour schemes range between each one. In
two of my videos my characters are sat inside where the colours are dull and any man made structures are a
dull or pale colour like grey, brown or light blue. In each piece there is always an small area containing nature
which is a much brighter colour, mostly green, but the person talking doesn’t see it. I designed it this way
because I notice most people don’t appreciate the beauty of nature, even if it isn’t a nature reserve just the
trees or corners of grass in town. It is supposed to draw attention to the ignorance of people (does it exist) but
also draw attention to the questions people ask. This gives environmental agency's a better chance of getting a
message out and helping people save the world. An example of this is the plastic, and not knowing which to
throw away and which not to.
I wanted to add more detail to the animation like wind, leaves, animals, other people, buses or footballs going
past the window and so on. I only had time to have one animated element in each video, not including the lip-
sync. I think if there was more animated elements in my videos it would have a greater effect on people.
Showing how much of nature there is and how much they are missing it.
There is very little text in my work. Only the text right at the end which I wanted to have a voice over for but ran
out of time to include it. The font is very natural looking and I used the colours for the font from the logo. I
think the font is a good choice because it is still easy to read and, to me, looks natural like a forest floor which
fits well with the ending animations.
Client
I think my work meets the clients needs. I needed to create an engaging piece of work that would
encourage people of all ages to be more engaged with wildlife. I needed to look at what wildlife means to
people and persuade them to get involved in the campaign and send their own written or video messages
to their MP to ask them to work towards the strongest possible environmental laws to protect our wild
places. I think I met the needs of most of this, there were some other things I would have liked to add in
for example recording peoples response after being told about the campaign and I wanted the
information at the end to be read out, maybe by the same people. But unfortunately I ran out of time. I
didn't realise how time consuming lip-syncing would be. My client was Yorkshire wildlife so I needed to
highlight issues in Yorkshire. To accomplish this when interviewing people I specifically asked for their
thought on British wildlife but I didn’t push for specific answers. They can interpret the question any way
they like giving the freedom for wider topics and the relatable content.
My client wanted people to engage with the campaign as well as be more aware for the environment. My
videos can be aimed at anyone because I interviewed actual people on the streets and use their audio
there are a wide number of personality's and ideas which everyone will relate to at least one. I was
surprised about how little people knew about the environment. I am always conscious about littering and
taking the car but to others they didn’t seem to care. Some people just responded “I don’t care” when
asked what they thought about the environment.
Personal Development
By doing this project I have learnt a lot about animation and also different types of software. Just by doing an
animated project I felt I was pushing myself as I’ve never done anything like it before and I wasn’t sure how it would
go. I found lip syncing wasn’t very difficult but was very time consuming which I didn’t foresee and I ended up not
being able to add as much detail in other areas as I wanted to because I ran out of time. The few animated animals I
did include I found really fun to make. Getting the movement right were quite difficult and I watched a few videos of
the real animals moving to get accurate movements but I am happy with how they turned out. The way I did it was
on photoshop drawing each frame individually, this was also quite time consuming but tried to keep each image
even in size and I think I did a good job.
The audio I recorded had quite a of wind which was disrupting the voices in some areas but adding the Highpass
filter on premiere it reducing the low frequency noise of the wind and lets high frequency's pass through. To get the
most clear voice you can you need to adjust the cut off of you could end up losing some of the voice as well. This
was a new skill which I have learned thank to this project and one I will remember for future ones.
I think this project went well as my first animated effort and the lessons I have learned about the software and the
different mistakes I made while in production will defiantly help me in the future. As a result of this experience I
want lo learn more about animation and improve the movement of my characters and my drawing skills. Hopefully in
my next project I can do more detail and add different animated element in the background as well as the main
characters.
