The document outlines a plan for a thriller opening involving a detective with a split personality who is both investigating and committing a murder. The opening scene shows the detective receiving details of the future murder from a client. Her other personality then begins to emerge through camera shots and edits. The film aims to create suspense by revealing the detective is both solving and committing the crime. It is inspired by Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde and targets 18-30 year olds interested in mystery and crime.
Presentation created by Caitlin Bronner, MLIS candidate (anticipated May 2013) at Pratt Institute, NY, USA. Job Talk assignment for Academic Libraries and Scholarly Communication course with Professor Deborah Rabina, PhD. Assignment specifically describes how undergraduate students at Boston College (Boston, USA) may create bibliographic citations with RefWorks (bibliographic citation generator).
3. Genre/Sub Genre
We were given a brief to create a thriller opening. Under
thriller, we chose to do a psychological thriller as it would
create suspense and keep the audience intrigued.
4. The Plot
A detective is asked to solve a murder case; one of the
victims is the man who came to him with the case. The
murder has not taken place yet, but will do in the future so
the detective decides to investigate this and solve the case.
What the audience don’t know is that the detective has a split
personality and is the murderer as well as the detective.
As the case comes to a close, she realises that she is the
murderer but there is nothing she can do to stop it form
happening.
5. The Opening
What seems like a normal day for the detective, soon turns
out to be a life changing day for her. The detective walks into
her office and is approached by a gentleman who asks her to
solve a murder mystery. He hands the detective a cut out of a
newspaper article, then leaves the room. Once he has
left, the detective looks at the article which is dated in the
future and then her other personality begins to slowly
show, which will be demonstrated through the use of camera
shots and edits.

8. Sound
Most sound which we will be adding to our opening will be
diegetic sounds; such as foot steps, door closing, clock
ticking and newspaper being put down on the table.
Background music will be added to help demonstrate what
the detective will be feeling. For example, when she starts
working there will be light and calm music; however, when
her other personality starts to come through, an eerie music
will slowly come in to show confusion and create a
suspenseful atmosphere.
9. Film Target Audience
The target audience of a film is hugely
important because it determines who
watches it and who doesn't, based upon
the content of the film. Our research has
shown that thrillers are mostly particularly
popular with males who are under 25.
We decided that our film would be aimed
and marketed at a niche market – those
who enjoy mystery and crime. Our target
age range is 18-30 year olds as they
would understand and enjoy the film
more.
We will be giving it an age rating of 15
because there will be a strong use of
violence.
10. Inspired By:
Dr Jekyll & Mr Hyde
It is about a London lawyer named Gabriel
John Utterson who investigates strange
occurrences between his old friend, Dr Henry
Jekyll, and the evil Edward Hyde.
The work is commonly associated with the
rare mental condition often spuriously called
"split personality", referred to in psychiatry
as dissociative identity disorder, where within
the same body there exists more than one
distinct personality. In this case, there are two
personalities within Dr Jekyll, one apparently
good and the other evil; completely opposite
levels of morality.
11. Production Schedule
Thursday 7th February: Finalise all filming details
Saturday 9th February: Film the thriller opening
Monday 11th February: Reviewing footages and deciding what
needs to be improved or additional ideas to the opening
Thursday 14th February: Re-shooting/extra filming (if needed) or
begin editing.
12. Risk Assessment
As most of our filming will be done in an office setting, there
may not be many risks we come across. However, there are
some risks such as:
Loosing/damaging the camera and equipment whilst filming
offsite
Weather damage to equipment when shooting the
establishing shot
Health hazards (e.g tripping over wires)
13. Skills Audit To Date
In the lead up to this main project, previous tasks have helped
us strengthen our knowledge and helped us make our
research and plan for the thriller opening to be successful.
Previous tasks have helped us to:
Publish posts, videos, images, PowerPoints, Prezis etc. to
our blog
Switch on and use a camera
Experiment with angles
Information on shot types and lighting
How to handle the camera, tripod and other equipment such
as the lights
Using FinalCut Pro to edit clips
Using SoundTrack Pro to add sounds
14. Institutional Details
For our thriller, we believe that Universal Pictures would be a
suitable production company for us. This is because they
have done movies similar to our thriller, such as The Bourne
Ultimatum.
Using Universal Pictures will help enhance our thriller’s
appeal as they have done many successful movies and will
therefore get more people to watch it.
