THRILLER MOVIE
PITCH PRESENTATION
By Gíordel and Dionne
Brief
 Our task was to produce a two minute opening to a thriller movie
 But what is a thriller movie? Google’s definition is ‘Thriller Film is a
genre that revolves around anticipation and suspense. The aim
for Thrillers is to keep the audience alert and on the edge of their
seats. The protagonist in these films is set against a problem – an
escape, a mission, or a mystery.’
 Through audience research we also found that there should be
tension, with the audience always with the question of ‘what’s going
to happen next?’ on their mind. It is also established that there
needs to be a ‘great plot’ where it is ‘unpredictable’ and constantly
keeps the viewer ‘entertained’ and ‘excited’ throughout the film.
 There are different types of thriller, known as subgenres.
 We chose to go down the path of a thriller-horror theme in our film.
Typical Conventions of the Horror
Genre
 Dark/Lowly lit scenes
 Protagonist and Antagonist
 Death/Violence/Blood
 Tension-building music
 Place with difficult/no escape
 Quick cuts
 Heavy breathing and footsteps
 Hidden identity of the antagonist
 Close up shots
 Places with a past/history
 Weapon
Brief of the Film
 A lock in takes place in a secondary school in Whitechapel, London.
This is an annual event which takes place in order for students to
complete their history projects on the topic of Jack the Ripper only
using items they find around the school. By 8pm all the doors are
locked, leaving Year 11 students and the corresponding teacher
inside. No teacher or student is allowed in or out of the building. The
students are working hard on their projects and end up finishing
around 10:30pm. Suddenly the lights are cut off, resulting in the
teachers heading in different directions to overcome the problem,
but it is seen that only three of them return. As the night goes on,
the group of friends realize that more of their classmates continue to
be taken by something...or someone. Upon the group finding bodies
of the missing people, they realise that the way they were killed has
a resemblance to how Jack the Ripper murdered his victims...
 With death potentially lurking around every corner, the students
must find their way out of the school before this historical fraud kills
them too.
The Idea
 The idea of making this thriller film a horror-
themed one came about through recognising
the fact that the conventions commonly used
in the making of them can be similarly done by
us.
 The fact that we’re situated in a school also
played a part.
 We thought that horror films commonly have a
historical touch to them
 From Hell (2001)
Target Audience
 Gender: Males and females
 Age: Mid-teens to 30
 Social Class Grade: B
 Location: United Kingdom
 Ethnicity: All
 Psychographics: Mainstreamer
BFI Feedback
 The first man speaking in the video says that in an opening sequence he likes when
he is told about where the scene is and what is happening in it, but he doesn’t want
this to be made extremely clear and blatant to him, such as a narrator being
introduced to explain the situation. To extend on this he goes on to talk about
someone who used to write for ‘Doctor Who’ who had an experience similar to what
he had just explained. To conclude, he says that what makes a good opening
sequence for a thriller is to drop clues to explain the scene. Further into the video he
explains that another technique he enjoys is seeing something ‘bloody or dead’ in the
first five minutes to ‘weird’ out the audience early on.
 The second man, along with supporting what was just said, goes on to mention how
music is a big establishing point for an opening scene to attempt on building on the
mood. This is important because it is what gets the audience ‘straight in there’, whilst
the story is what is built on throughout the film. The music is an essential part to the
foundation for the rest of the movie to be enticing.
 Both of them liked the idea of the fact that our film has a historical connection to it
but it is being set in the present day, saying it’s ‘good’ and ‘fun’. It is also mentioned
that if people know about Jack the Ripper they could possibly see things that others
don’t pick up on. Also, the fact that it is set in Whitechapel, also where Jack the
Ripper was situated was also a key factor picked up on, along with the fact that this
type of film is set in a school, which was unexpected for them both. They both also
think our idea would work.
What we changed in response to
the feedback
 We found that we should change the name
from ‘The Ripper Returns’ to only ‘The Ripper’
 The location of our filming
Distribution Company
 We chose for Lionsgate to be our distribution
company
 Has one of the biggest horror thriller movie
series
 Saw I-V all in their top 25 grossing movies
 Better than the other distribution companies
researched
Character Profiles
Each character has their own distinct personality.
Isabelle is seen as the mother of the group. Making sure that
everyone is looked after.
Martha is the one who teases everyone else, but makes sure
they all know it’s a joke. She admires everyone in her
friendship group but doesn’t make it obvious.
Sara is the youngest of the group. She is usually seen as being
a little bit ditzy and unaware of most things.
William is the ‘victim’ of the group as he is also the one who
gets the short end of the stick when the girls decide to go up
against him.
We will try to cast people who’s normal personalities match
those of the characters we have created that way we can get a
somewhat authentic character. We would also like them to end
up making the character their own in some way. This would
help make it look as if they are the character and not just an
actor playing a part.
Risk Assessment and Location Plannin
These are the 4 main locations that we would like to film our thriller in.
We’ve decided to chose these area as they fit with our script and fit beautifully with our storyline. The
other reason we have chosen these locations is because they are all vital parts of a school meaning it
will come across very clearly that it is set in a school. Like any location there can be some risks we
come across, however we have assessed those possible risks and have created solutions for them.
To avoid this
happening we can
find out before we
shoot whether or not
exams, assemblies
or PE lessons are
going to be taking
place.
This is a
classroom. This
would result in
lessons being
taken place here
causing this
room to be
unavailable.
This area is often
used for assemblies,
examination
purposes or for PE
lessons causing
theses areas to be
out of bounds.
To avoid any clashes
we can either use a
different art classroom
if it is in use or find out
when it is free or to
use it out of normal
school hours.
This corridor is
used very often
meaning
people will walk
in and out of
our shot.
The corridor is dark
which means
injuries can happen
more easily. It is
also quite a
frequently used
corridor
To avoid injury we
can wait for the
lights to turn on
ensuring a safe
working
environment. We
can also try to use
this corridor on a
different level of the
school where its not
used as much.
To try and combat
this we could shoot
during lesson time
that way most people
will be in class and
out of the corridor.
We can also be
aware of our timings
and know when
lunch or break is
happening and try to
Risk Assessment and Location Plannin
Script
The script helps to portray the characters in a different light. It also shows how unaware they are
to what will eventually happen. The script draws in the audience at 3 distinct parts.
The first one is when the film opens up. The
audience will hear a poem read aloud by a
unknown character. The words he says draw in
the audience as it is very vague and can be
interpreted in different way.
The third is the aftermath of the main
character seeing something that shouldn’t
rightly be there. This also helps to build
suspense because it becomes aware to the
audience that there is something in the school
and that it may do something to harm the
children. It also enhances the sense of the
unknown.
The next time the script helps to build
suspense is in the stage direction. This is
when one of the main characters notices
someone inside the school, when
everyone is actually in their designated
areas. This builds suspense because it
creates a sense of being unaware and not
knowing for the audience.
Storyboard
We have chosen for the figure to be all in black
as it creates a mysterious and eerie feeling. It
also conforms to the enigmas of having some
dark and/or unexplainable, because at that point
no one know who or what it is.
We have chosen to do this as it conforms to
the typically thriller enigmas of being dark. As
it starts off dark it conveys an eerie emotion
as schools are usually seen in the day so it
goes against how a school is typically viewed
as.
We have chosen our last scene to be where the one of
the main characters sees the figure. However, it is in the
same corridor but its now empty. It now becomes clear
to the audience tat there is someone in the school that
shouldn’t be. This conforms to thriller enigmas as it has
a variety of unanswered questions which intrigue the
audience and entice them into watching more.
Music choice
 We have chosen a track called ‘Tension’
Production Schedule
We plan to have everything
finished and edited by the 24th
March 2016. In-between we
have set a variety of deadlines
to ensure that we can create
and editing our film before the
24th March. In between we also
have two viewing point so we
are able to get some audience
feedback. This would be helpful
as we can get first hand
opinions and will be able to see
if we are heading in the right
tracks.

  • 10. What we changed in response to the feedback  We found that we should change the name from ‘The Ripper Returns’ to only ‘The Ripper’  The location of our filming
  • 11. Distribution Company  We chose for Lionsgate to be our distribution company  Has one of the biggest horror thriller movie series  Saw I-V all in their top 25 grossing movies  Better than the other distribution companies researched
  • 12. Character Profiles Each character has their own distinct personality. Isabelle is seen as the mother of the group. Making sure that everyone is looked after. Martha is the one who teases everyone else, but makes sure they all know it’s a joke. She admires everyone in her friendship group but doesn’t make it obvious. Sara is the youngest of the group. She is usually seen as being a little bit ditzy and unaware of most things. William is the ‘victim’ of the group as he is also the one who gets the short end of the stick when the girls decide to go up against him. We will try to cast people who’s normal personalities match those of the characters we have created that way we can get a somewhat authentic character. We would also like them to end up making the character their own in some way. This would help make it look as if they are the character and not just an actor playing a part.
  • 13. Risk Assessment and Location Plannin These are the 4 main locations that we would like to film our thriller in. We’ve decided to chose these area as they fit with our script and fit beautifully with our storyline. The other reason we have chosen these locations is because they are all vital parts of a school meaning it will come across very clearly that it is set in a school. Like any location there can be some risks we come across, however we have assessed those possible risks and have created solutions for them. To avoid this happening we can find out before we shoot whether or not exams, assemblies or PE lessons are going to be taking place. This is a classroom. This would result in lessons being taken place here causing this room to be unavailable. This area is often used for assemblies, examination purposes or for PE lessons causing theses areas to be out of bounds. To avoid any clashes we can either use a different art classroom if it is in use or find out when it is free or to use it out of normal school hours.
  • 14. This corridor is used very often meaning people will walk in and out of our shot. The corridor is dark which means injuries can happen more easily. It is also quite a frequently used corridor To avoid injury we can wait for the lights to turn on ensuring a safe working environment. We can also try to use this corridor on a different level of the school where its not used as much. To try and combat this we could shoot during lesson time that way most people will be in class and out of the corridor. We can also be aware of our timings and know when lunch or break is happening and try to Risk Assessment and Location Plannin
  • 15. Script The script helps to portray the characters in a different light. It also shows how unaware they are to what will eventually happen. The script draws in the audience at 3 distinct parts. The first one is when the film opens up. The audience will hear a poem read aloud by a unknown character. The words he says draw in the audience as it is very vague and can be interpreted in different way. The third is the aftermath of the main character seeing something that shouldn’t rightly be there. This also helps to build suspense because it becomes aware to the audience that there is something in the school and that it may do something to harm the children. It also enhances the sense of the unknown. The next time the script helps to build suspense is in the stage direction. This is when one of the main characters notices someone inside the school, when everyone is actually in their designated areas. This builds suspense because it creates a sense of being unaware and not knowing for the audience.
  • 16. Storyboard We have chosen for the figure to be all in black as it creates a mysterious and eerie feeling. It also conforms to the enigmas of having some dark and/or unexplainable, because at that point no one know who or what it is. We have chosen to do this as it conforms to the typically thriller enigmas of being dark. As it starts off dark it conveys an eerie emotion as schools are usually seen in the day so it goes against how a school is typically viewed as. We have chosen our last scene to be where the one of the main characters sees the figure. However, it is in the same corridor but its now empty. It now becomes clear to the audience tat there is someone in the school that shouldn’t be. This conforms to thriller enigmas as it has a variety of unanswered questions which intrigue the audience and entice them into watching more.
  • 17. Music choice  We have chosen a track called ‘Tension’
  • 18. Production Schedule We plan to have everything finished and edited by the 24th March 2016. In-between we have set a variety of deadlines to ensure that we can create and editing our film before the 24th March. In between we also have two viewing point so we are able to get some audience feedback. This would be helpful as we can get first hand opinions and will be able to see if we are heading in the right tracks.
