How media theory influenced a horror trailer
1. How did (media theory) research
impact/influence your ideas?
2. Narrative
We learnt about Todorov’s narrative theory.
We took his ideas into consideration when
planning and developing our trailer. Our
story started with an equilibrium as Evie’s
life isn’t tampered with. A disruption is
caused when Evie is prescribed with illegal
medication that causes her natural anxieties
to worsen. A realisation is found when she
has experienced traumatic hallucinations
that show her insanity. A slight attempt to
restore the equilibrium is made my Evie’s
friend but it is unsuccessful, which is typical
of the horror genre.
We also used binary oppositions such as
known vs. unknown and darkness vs. light in
relation to safety.
3. Genre
• All films follows specific conventions, depending on the
classified genre. We stuck to iconic conventions such as
setting. This is because as a supernatural trailer, we
wanted the audience to feel isolated and woods are
associated with widespread, desolate areas.
• We used sound as a way of strengthening the other
conventions by creating suspense and misleading scares.
4. Representation
• Jeremy Tunstall identified four character
roles for women in films. This was
helpful when planning our trailer as both
the villain and false victim are female.
• Most shots in our trailer will be of
females, as the main character is a
female herself. According to Mulvey’s
Male Gaze theory, a use of multiple
point of view shots, allows the females
to be seen from a male perspective.
They are then seen as objects. We plan
to use these shots so males will be more
tempted to watch our film, broadening
our audience from predominantly
females that are attracted to the
supernatural genre.
5. Audience
Our target audience is mostly under
25s, both males and females. We
think females will enjoy our film more
as it is part of the supernatural
subgenre.
Males will also be drawn towards this
film due to the male gaze. Our film
features young, pretty females so will
be attractive to males.
Our film may also be relatable as
some people have experienced
trauma in their lives. By using
actresses/actors who are of similar
age to the target audience it creates a
story for them to relate to.
