Blacks and the Media Essay example
Racism and discrimination continue to be a prevalent problem in American society. Although
minorities have made significant strides toward autonomy and equality, the images in media,
specifically television, continue to misrepresent and manipulate the public opinion of blacks. It is no
longer a blatant practice upheld by the law and celebrated with hangings and beatings, but instead it is
a subtle practice that is perceived in the entertainment and media industries. Whether it s appearing in
disparaging roles or being negatively portrayed in newscasts, blacks continue to be the victims of an
industry that relies on old ideas to appeal to the majority. The viscous cycle that is the unconscious
racism of the media continues to not only be ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In the television show The First 48, which is promoted as being an authentic form of reality television,
the depiction of blacks as criminals is evident. In most cases, it is a black person who is suspected,
accused and arrested for a crime; although, one might argue the show does its job to follow along with
the calls received and crimes reported, the overrepresentation of blacks relative to the population
numbers is evident. Ardis C. Martin, in an Academic Psychiatry Journal, writes, People develop
conceptions about the world as a result of repeated exposure to consistent and repetitive images in the
media. In watching The First 48, it is no surprise why a white consumer would come to the realization
that all blacks are deviant criminals, while a black consumer would be susceptible to being a criminal
because of a media that has already defined him or her by the color of his or her skin. Black
Entertainment Television, which was created to empower black people in a predominantly white
media, has strayed away from its roots and marketed its programming to mimic and compete with
other stations for ratings. As a television station that once had a variety of journalism programs and
shows dedicated to a diversity of music genres within the black culture, it has now centered its model
on reality television and limited selection of rap music videos. The Encyclopedia of African American
History states the ascendancy of rap music from a black, ghetto art form to a

The Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) is a program that was set in place, in 1975, to improve the
economic status of low income persons [...] granting nearly $40 billion to low income households
(Borjas, 59). As is clear from the name of the program, The EITC is a program that provides tax
credits to those who qualify, the EITC could even produce a negative tax liability for some
households, in particular the type I will discuss, which would provide substantial income increases for
these households. In order to qualify for the EITC, the recipients must be active members of the labor
force, in that they must have labor income, and for the group that I will be focusing on, single

I will look at the performance of the Earned Income Tax Credit, in terms of its ability to increase the
labor supply of single mothers, as well as any complications that may arise from the EITC program.
(Athreya, 2012) The benefits of the Earned Income Tax Credit for single mothers have been outlined
by numerous studies written by renowned Economists, such as Bruce D. Meyer and Dan T.
Rosenbaum of the University of Chicago and the University of North Carolina at Greensburg
respectively. The article by Meyer and Rosenbaum, Welfare, The Earned Income Tax Credit, and The
Labor Supply of Single Mothers, contains the data and statistics that I will use as the basis of my
analysis and where I will draw the bulk of my conclusions on the benefits and drawbacks of the
Earned Income Tax Credit on the labor supply of single mothers. Meyer s and Rosenbaum s research
is extremely significant to the particular topic that I am outlining as it uses data collected from a well
known survey and furthermore, looks specifically at the groups that are of particular interest of my

What Is The Dominant Spoken Language In Chile

an integral part of doing business in foreign territories. According to Satterlee (2014), Individuals and
organizations within each culture communicate in manners unique to their culture (p. 43). Thus,
understanding the culture and forms of communication is vital to conducting business around the

Comparing Modern Day Society In The Giver And Modern Society
Jonas´s society and our society have nothing in common. Image living in a world where you can t
make your own choices. Jonas the protagonist in The Giver society tried to create a utopia but led to a
dystopia. Comparing modern day society to Jonas s society they have very little in common. Jonas s
society has No love, No Individuality , and they re controlled, While our society has love, we
celebrate Individual differences, and we have freedom. First of all Jonas s society does not allow them
to love anyone or anything, while our society we can. For example, when Jonas asked his father and
mother if they loved him his mom said, ¨Your father means that it s become almost obsolete¨, (lowry
160). For these reasons, you can tell that the word love is not used in their community. While Jonas s
society has no love, our society is full of it. In our society we use the word love each day, towards our
loved ones. We use the this word because, it s a word to describe a number of different emotional
experiences. Therefore you can see that Jonas s society has no emotions towards anything or anyone,
while in our society we do. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

everyone s birthday is on the same day, and after age twelve age no longer matters. On the contrary,
We celebrate our Individual differences. For instance, in our society age matters, and we celebrate our
birthdays on the day we were born, which are on different days. Finally you can see that we value
everyone s differences, unlike Jonas s

The Selma March And The Voting Rights Movement
Around the 1950s, there was a large struggle for African Americans to vote. The main issues were
barriers to voting. Alabama was one example of severe obstacles for voting. Literacy tests were
mandatory for being allowed to vote and often led to discrimination as test proctors would give harder
questions to those they disfavored. Poll taxes meant lower income citizens could not vote. Black
Americans often lived far away from voting centers so restrictions were placed on transportation so
they could not have a chance of voting. These conditions led to a small minority of African Americans
that could actually vote. Demonstrations began by two groups of civil right advocates, Southern
Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) and Student Nonviolent ... Show more content on

Social structures, such as the police and government, and representation, such as people who actively
opposed the movement, were contested with success as the result was a big jump for civil rights by the
Voting Rights Act. The march concluded with the ensured ability to vote for African Americans, which
meant justice was achieved. However, while the march overall the Selma March seemed just, there
was disagreement between SNCC and SCLC. Both groups knew that there was injustice being done as
a result of the voting laws in Alabama, but their leaders had a different approach to solving the issue.
SCLC wanted to maintain the idea of peaceful protest while SCLC was more active in their movement
and promoted civil disobedience. While the march was successful in showing the nation needed to
reform its voting legislation, there were many injuries and some deaths associated with the events of
the march. These deaths and injuries were unjust as they were a result of unjust ideologies. To achieve
justice, the SCLC s method of peaceful protest may have been a viable option as opposed to checking
demonstrations and marches which had

Kilamuwa Relief Summary
In the article The Kilamuwa Relief: Ethnicity, Class and Power in Iron Age North Syria, the author
Brian Brown argues that the Kilamuwa relief expresses the ethnic identity of its makers, as understood
by the members of the ruling class. He writes that the relief does not reflect a long standing identity,
but rather, expresses a new identity created for the upper class by the king Kilamuwa. The author
supports his thesis by analyzing several aspects of the relief. He first notes the architectural setting.
The relief is located in a royal monumental building, which is a typical Assyrian practice, and it is not
near the town s gates (344 5). Brown believes that this, along with the ruler s comment of the
ineffectiveness of past rulers, may indicate a rejection of those who came before him (345). This may
be the king s way of representing a distinct break from earlier practices (348). By breaking from
architectural practices, he is representing his break from past cultural practices and forming a new
definition of his people s identity. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The use of this language was a major innovation. The author connects the use of this script with the
conflict occurring between two groups of people in this king s state, the mushkabim and B RRM,
which some believe to be Aramaens and Luwians (345). Phoenician is a non native language, and
would have therefore been neutral (346). Brown speculates that Kilamuwa used a neutral language in
order to strengthen his claim in the text of being a reconciler of conflict and a just and fair ruler (346).
Brown also believes that his action would have served to unify Kilamuwa s people and dispel internal
division

Clinical Decision Support System
During the course of my two year program in the Healthcare Informatics, we have touch on many
aspect of the field to get us ready for the work field. We had taken courses from: computer application,
data communication, information system analysis to creating organizational values. All of these
courses were great, but the one that comes to mind that will be best integrated with my thesis project
is decision support system. My key focus for this thesis project is, interoperability equal continuity
through standards. As a result, the course decision support system will be a perfect complement.
Clinical decision support systems (CDSSs) are interactive systems that emulate human reasoning in a
given domain. CDSSs were first developed about 40 year ago and have a successful track record in
improving the clinical intervention process (Antonio, et al., 2014). They are designed to analyze data

Italian merchants at the city of kaffa were besieged by the mongols in 1345. As the mongols started

the italian city walls. The disease killing the mongols was the bubonic Plague during medieval times
there was no cure for this disease and it was spread easily. The italian merchants returned to their port
city and the disease spread rapidly throughout Europe symptoms included large blisters called buboes
high fevers and delirium cures such as donating gold to the church self flagellation and using leeches

The Middle Ages came to a close through the innovations of Renaissance, the discovery and

We are only as good as our equipment or at least that is how the saying goes, but what happens when
we have the best equipment and our bodies no longer tolerate atmospheric conditions? Into Thin Air,
written by Jon Krakauer, shows how individuals vary greatly in how well they can tolerate changes in
pressure, temperature or oxygen content of the air. This allows them to be one with themselves by
bounding with survival, while simultaneously displaying how slowly environmental changes set in,
but how rapidly the effects take a toll on the body. Despite breaking down the climb into camps the
climb s structure was one that was also hard to tackle. There was the base camp, camp one, camp two,

Background
Eastern Waves Inc. is a steel manufacturing company located in Kuantan, Malaysia. In 2009, Eastern
Waves cash on hand was 188 ringgits (RM). In the previous year, they had an even lower cash balance
of RM188. Without cash, Eastern Waves are unable to purchase raw materials from local raw material
suppliers. Eastern currently has a joint venture relationship with Jinan amp; Iron Steel Corp., which
enables Eastern to buy scrap steel on credit from the Jinan plate mill operation. This scrap steel is
crucial to Eastern s success given the market price of the purchased raw steel billets. However, the
scrap steel is of a lower grade than the standard raw steel billet.

The protection of Malaysian upstream steel industry was affecting local downstream steel millers as
they were forced to buy from the more expensive domestic suppliers. The government are attempting
to promote cordial relationships between employers and employees and industrial harmony based on

regulations attempt to protect the domestic workers. As a result, the Malaysian industries still rely
heavily on cheap foreign workers. In order to reverse the dependency on foreign workers and promote
domestic workers, the government has recently imposed an annual level of RM125 1500 on each
foreign worker and limited their work stay to only two years per permit. Eastern Wave is a small steel

Pollution and environmental problems of mankind
In recent years, we often hear and use the word ecology , but one can hardly assume that everyone
understands him correctly. About even the experts argue what meaning people should invest in this
concept. In the meantime, they argue, laymen have realized such ecological minimum: it means to
breathe clean air, drink clean water, eat food without nitrates and glow in the dark. The term ecology
(from the Greek oikos a house, dwelling place, and logos science) was provided in 1866 by the
German zoologist Ernst Haeckel, who introduced it into use to refer to general science about the
organisms and their environment.
But now the concept of ecology has already gone far beyond the scope of what to put in it and Ernst
Haeckel as specified in the reference books and encyclopedias. Now it is an independent science about
the environment (in terms of its interactions with living organisms and, above all people). It nourishes
not only and not so much biology, but almost all of Earth science meteorology, hydrology,
oceanography, climatology, geography, geology with the necessary for their physical and

Compare And Contrast Freud And Foucault

First Year Seminar Freud and Foucault
Throughout reading the two books on Sigmund Freud and Foucault we can infer that they have many
views, standpoints on various ideas, points about certain aspects also as to why we act like we do. One
standpoint both philosophers have, is the idea of restraint. Restraint is a measure or condition that
keeps someone or something under control or within limits. As it can also be unemotional,
dispassionate, or moderate behavior; self control. Both Freud and Foucault have their very strong
opinions on the subject of Restraint. Freud talks about restraint through your libido and super ego.

The first time Foucault talks about restraint is in The Means of Correct Training. Here Foucault talks
about the hierarchical observation.
One way Sigmund Freud talks about the idea of restraint as read in his book Civilization and its
Discontents is through sex and the Sex drive every person has. The idea of restraint comes from is that
it is impossible to resist and restrain yourself from sex and sex urges. Every human acts the way they
do due to their libido. Freud informs you that your libido or also known as your sex drive controls on
how you act like you do. It is natural from birth to have a libido and there is no way to stop it. The

Ethnicity is defined as an ethnic group; a social group that shares a common and distinctive culture,

White American, Black or African American, Alaska Native or Native American, Native Hawaiian,
Asian American, or people of two or more races. The US census also groups Americans into the

Ethnic cleansing is defined as the systematic removal of ethnic or religious groups from a given
territory by a more powerful ethnic group, with the intent of making it ethnically homogenous. This
basically means, one ethnic groups removes another group to make a certain place s population just
their ethnic group. Ethnic cleansing can be carried out in many ways, such as forced migration,
intimidation, and mass murder. One of the most cruel and widespread examples of this was the
Holocaust. It was portrayed in the book The Diary of Anne Frank . In 1933, a man named Adolf Hitler
was elected as chancellor of Germany. Germany was angry and embarrassed from WW1, and they
wanted someone to blame. Hitler gave them someone, the jews. He blamed them for Germany s
defeat. The Franks are the main focus of the book The Diary of Anne Frank . After Hitler was elected
the Franks started to notice the anger and hatred around them, so they fled to Amsterdam. In 1940,
Germany invaded The Netherlands and they began to place restrictions on the jews. Anne Frank and
her sister had to switch to an all jewish school, they had to wear stars on their clothes, and they weren
t allowed in certain places. In 1942 Anne s sister received a call up notice to be relocated to a work
camp. Her father then decide it was time to tell them about their hiding place. They left their house a
mess and left a note about leaving for Switzerland to throw the authorities off. They moved into the
attic of Otto Frank s office building. They were joined by a few others shorty after. During her time
there, Anne kept a very detailed diary about her daily life and her thoughts. They lived there for two
years until August 4, 1944 the German police stormed the building and found them from an
anonymous tip. The family was then sent to a concentration camp called Auschwitz. The men and
women were separated and those who were too young or

Srutinize The Quote From Heilbroner And Milberg
Scrutinize the Quote from Heilbroner/Milberg The evolution of the market economy has its roots in
tradition and command systems. Even today, market economies rely on practices that have a
resemblance to those of the middle ages and antiquity. If a person of yester years were exposed to the
workings of the free market, they would be baffled with how resources are allocated to the right places
especially labor and production. The beginnings of the economic society are traced to the relatable but
separate problems that the society faced: the production of sufficient goods and services that would
ensure the survival of the society and the organization of production output to make certain that there
is more production (Heilbroner and Milberg 4). All medieval societies sought for ways to deal with
these problems. Through history, humankind has tried to solve the problems of production and
distribution in three ways: tradition, command and market economies (Heilbroner and Milberg 6). All
these solutions are relatable to each other with some aspects of each overarching on the others. For the
tradition solution, it focused on solving the issue of production. Each member of the society had their
role predefined similar to their parents occupations. Notably, sons ... Show more content on

Milwaukee Cannibal Research Paper
What s for Supper Tonight? The Story of the Milwaukee Cannibal You re probably wondering who the
Milwaukee Cannibal is, right? This grotesque psychopath has a story like no other. His alibis to lure in
his victims are utterly surprising. Even though this very monstrous man is dead, the story of his grisly
murders will never be forgotten. In the year of 1960, Milwaukee, Wisconsin welcomed a new spawn
of Satan. At the mere age of four, a major procedure was performed on this young child to fix a double
hernia. Soon after at six years old, he moved to Bath, Ohio with his family. At age eight, he was

Generational Differences in the Classroom
Most people have a learning style that mirrors how they were taught when they were younger. It
should be noted that there is not a one size fits all method when it comes to learning. The key to being
able to appeal to each of the different generations is to offer diversity in teaching styles in order to
satisfy the different preferences. As of now, there are four generations that are in the workforce and
those four generations are: The Silent Generation, Baby Boomers, Generation X, and the Millennials.
This paper will examine the characteristics of these four generations, how their learning styles differ,

It is important for these adult students to have time to understand concepts that involve the use of
technology. The next generation to be examined is the Baby Boomers, the Baby Boomers were born in
the early 1940 s to early 1960 s. This generation occupies a lot of top executive roles in the workforce
and are not retiring as they were expected to (Levonius, 2015). The Baby Boomers were taught to
grow up questioning authority and standing up for themselves when they needed to. Around the time
this generation was in school there was a grade inflation in the educational system, and the Boomer s
strived to achieve these high grade marks. Baby Boomers were taught in a linear fashion, they were
taught by lecture, and the technology they had included overhead projectors and some videos (Warren,
2012). Since this generation was accustomed to trying to achieve high grades they became
achievement oriented adults. Education was quite a bit different from earlier generations in this era
(Olson, 2011). There was more emphasis placed on students to finish high school, and for the first
time in history more students were attending college. From both the size of the generation as well as
their impact to society, Baby Boomers have strong sense of self and a desire for involvement in their
world, particularly at work (Olson, 2011). They have a strong work ethic, and a desire to receive

The Education System Of The 21st Century
In the 21st century, many American students are wondering why they are even going to college at all,
which begs to question, what is the purpose of education in the 21st century. As with any big question,
there are multiple takes on the higher education system in America. Walter Kirn, a Princeton Alumni,
describes education as a meritocracy, where those with merit, or wealth in this case, can rise to the top,
in a personal narrative Lost in the Meritocracy describing what education in the 21st century is. His
experiences show us the life of an Ivy Leaguer in modern times, which is very different from the
common portrayal of an Ivy League student. Kirn s experiences and life at Princeton comically
contradict his own university s mission statement, while still highlighting the pressure put on Ivy
League students with an aptitude for showing aptitude (Kirn 143) Kirn s narrative shows the flaws and
cracks in higher education, cracks that Liz Coleman former president of Bennington College believes
call for a reform of liberal arts education. In her TedTalk, Coleman shows us how to get education
back to its roots, or what it should be. Using rhetorical devices created by Aristotle, pathos, appealing
to emotion; ethos, appealing to expertise; or logos, appealing to logic; Kirn, Coleman, and various
universities are able to convince the reader of their point of view. Whether it is the images of a broken
education system, or the idealistic dreams of the universities

What Is Pecola s Standards For Beauty In The Bluest Eye
In Toni Morrison s The Bluest Eye, Morrison presents a young black girl, Pecola, who embodies the
issue of racial self contempt in the 1940s. Pecola prays for blue eyes because she longs to be viewed
with the same beauty as that of white people; however, as Morrison states, Implicit in her desire [is]
racial self loathing. (Morrison 210) She hates her dark skin and her dark eyes because she has
conformed to her society s definition of beauty: light skin and light eyes. On the other hand, Morrison
introduces Claudia, another black girl who demonstrates the opposite outlook. Claudia sees Pecola s
wish for blue eyes as radical and shameful; namely, she is astonished by the desecration (Morrison

Automobiles Then and Now Essay
Automobiles Then and Now
The automobile has become an important part in our nations economy. In fact such an important part
that is has called for many changes through out its history. One of the main changes is the body. In the
1950 s the body was made mostly of steel. This was okay if you like bulky, heavy, gas guzzling cars.
The main reason why steel was so widely used is that the steel industry was so huge and steel was so
cheep that it was the logical thing to use. However with all the advances in plastics it did not make
sense to use steel when a lighter more durable substitute became readily available and much cheaper.
Steel is still used though today because of its strength and protection to the passengers. Changes in ...

In the 1950 s the automobile hade drum brakes all the way around. The problem with drum brakes was
that they heated up easily and by heating up that would cause failure to the brakes, (Coates Del, Brake
System 1). Drum brakes would mostly heat up when traveling down hill, as one would have to apply
the brake often and there being no ventilation it was a accident waiting to happen. Most drum brakes
where mechanically actuated (Coates, Brake systems 2). This means that the brakes where actuated by
a cable and caused them to lock up very easily. The hydraulic brake was introduced in the 1950 s
(Coates Brakes Systems 3). This new braking system used fluid to apply pressure and greatly reduced
lock up. Disc Brakes have become the premiere stopping system on cars today. Disc brakes do not trap
water as drum brakes tend to do which causes them to slip and fail. Disc brakes also allow more
surface area to accept pressure from the brake pads making stopping faster. In addition to disc brakes
ABS (Anti lock Braking System) was introduced on motor vehicles in the United States as a safety
feature (Coates ABS Brake Systems). ABS brake system uses wheel speed sensors, a computer and a
modulator unit to prevent loss of tire adhesion during braking. ABS is now available on over 90
percent of all new vehicles. The ABS brake system does not operate when you apply the brake unless

Last but not least, this measure provides product characteristics with which compliance is mandatory .
Thus, all stipulations or rules on characteristics of tobacco products and their packages, which satisfy
the foregoing elements, can be considered as technical regulations and they will fall within the scope
of the TBT Agreement. However, Article 1.5 of the TBT Agreement provides that provisions of the
Agreement do not cover and control measures falling within the scope of the Agreement on the
Application of Sanitary and Phytosanitary Measures ( SPS Agreement ). In order to ensure that
tobacco control measures fall within the TBT Agreement, these measures shall be out of the SPS
Agreement. Both SPS Agreement and TBT Agreement provide the limit in which WTO members have
the right to adopt and enforce measures to protect their public health. The TBT Agreement control
protective measures applied to all kinds of goods, except foods, beverages and feedstuffs which are
under the power of the SPS Agreement. Tobacco products cannot be witnessed as foods, beverages
and feedstuffs so protective measures imposed on them, certainly, fall outside the scope of the SPS
Agreement. According to Article 1.5 of the TBT Agreement, the legitimate of tobacco commercial
measures will be examined in the framework of the TBT Agreement, rather than the SPS Agreement.

the novel seems entirely fairly sympathetic for the case Jim, the one who was at the forefront of it all.
Steinbeck highlights his character and humanity. He s not made to be necessarily perfect, however his

Biological Branches Of The Complex Study Of Life
ABSTRACT Throughout history, there have been many studies conducted regarding different
biological branches of the complex study of life. Amylase, an enzyme that catabolizes starch
polymers, is one of the most important enzymes needed for the production of certain foods, such as
syrups, and different processes such as fermentation. Like everything s biological nature, these certain
enzymes are affected by different factors ranging from pH levels to temperature. Finding out the
temperature at which these enzymes reach their optimal condition (conditions at which these enzymes
work the best), is one of the most revealing studies of all. In this experiment, the affect that
temperature has on the enzymatic activity of Amylase was the leading role, whether it was to
determine if it was slowing it down or speeding it up. For both experiments, iodine was used as the
control. First, the optimal temperatures of fungal Amylase were tested. For this particular task, there
was not too much changed noticed. For most of the temperatures, the activity change seen was very
minimal. With iodine and starch by itself, the activity remained the same as well as with the amylase
at the 85 degrees test. When testing for the bacterial Amylase, the most change was seen at the 55
degrees test. Overall, it can be said that as temperature rises or decreases, enzymatic activity is
affected, but of course with a certain plateau.

Our recommendation to San Juan Cell Phones, taking in consideration the risk is to accept the order
from Big Box and buy the 100,000 phones from the OEM Company, which will be able to meet the
deadline, make an identical phone to the Alpha model, and the price will be fourteen dollars for each
unit. This alternative will generate a profit $100,000.00, since cell phones would be sold at fifteen
dollars as shown in Table 1 3. The earning are not going to be substantial but at the end we are not
going to lose the customer; promote our company, attract potential customers, which will bring even
bigger profits to the company without cost control. Also we can expand the company and at the end is
going to generate new employments and the possibility of take the company to a major chain level. In
conclusion San Juan Cell Phones is a company that has the opportunity to grow and already have
products that gave them a good profit, but there is always some space to improve their products. At

with the cost comparison, identify alternatives that increment the cost, analyze the different risk,

3. The type of compensation, or damages you can hope to recover?
I thought this would be a good question to ask because in the end, anyone who files a lawsuit is
looking to get something out of it. By the attorney asking what the clients expected outcome should
be, this allows the attorney to prepare the case in the correct manner. It also gives the attorney the
opportunity to talk with the client about what the realistic outcomes could be and how the process will
work.
4. Did you speak with Human Resources regarding the interview process?
This is a good question to ask the Ms. Shewin because if she went to the HR department or an upper
management person to talk to them about the inappropriate interview circumstances, then it give the
case more leverage that these alleged allegations did in fact take place and when they took place. This
also gives the attorney additional people to talk with to get a better understanding of what they thought

states that the international system is more accurately described by Samuel Huntington s term uni
multipolarity. (Zakaria 413) The meaning in this is that in coming new world that there will be other
countries that hold significant power with one superpower still remaining. Zakaria remains optimistic
that the United States will still hold the spot as the most powerful country even as other countries rise,
as long as the U.S. can accept the changes of no longer being the only country with power and learn to

Zakaria shows concern for America if they are unable to adapt. He states The irony is that the rise of

United States has pushed for other countries to open up to new concepts concerning politics, trade,

Experiment one primarily dealt with mutualism, where the chimpanzees allow the recipient to have

the recipients. When experiment one was conducted, the chimpanzees were all socially housed at the

Odette Book Report Essay
Odette has been captured in the forest by the evil sorcerer, Von Rothbart, and was cursed by the evil
sorcerer to only be able to remain as a maiden at night, and to be turned into a white swan by the time
it hits daylight.
Prince Seigfried arrives at his birthday party, only to realise that people of kingdom and the royal
families are at his party dancing and celebrating, and bachelorettes are nervously trying to get his
attention on them. Prince Seigfried s mother passes him a crossbow and tells him that his marriage
would be arranged as soon as possible, due to his age of 21. The prince realized how much
responsibility he is lined up with in the future, so he decided to take his crossbow with him, as he
headed into the woods with his hunting mates.
The Prince finally finds himself alone in a secluded part of the forest, where is it peaceful, by an
enchanted lake with swans floating across it gracefully. As the prince watched them, he notices the
most beautiful looking swan he has ever ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
As night falls, the swan with the crown transforms into a gorgeous young lady, and is by far, the most
beautiful woman the prince has ever laid eyes on. Her name is Odette, Queen of the Swans. She
warned the prince to be wary of the evil sorcerer,Von Rothbart, who is apparently disguised as the
prince s mentor. The evil sorcerer turned Odette and the other girls into swans, and the lake was made
up by the tears of their parents. She told him that the only way to break the spell would be if a man,
pure in heart, pledges his love to her. Just as the prince was about to pledge his love for Odette, they
were interrupted by the evil sorcerer, who then proceeds to take Odette away from the prince and
commands the swans to dance around the lake and the shore to avoid the prince from chasing them.
Prince Seigfried was then left by himself, all alone on the shore of Swan

The Biological And Environmental Causes Of Alpine Ecosystems
Introduction
Alpine Ecosystems Alpine lands account for approximately 20% of the Earth s total terrestrial land
mass and house almost 10% of the world s population (Ives and Messerli, 1999). Alpine ecosystems
are categorized similarly to high latitudinal locations as extreme ecosystems . In these ecosystems,
there are controls to the environmental variables that govern their hydrological and biological cycles.
For example, they often experience extreme conditions of light, temperature, and precipitation that
may restrict and limit vegetation growing conditions and the abundance of live animals. However,
these limiting conditions have also established the ideal conditions for a wide distribution of snow and
ice across mountains and plateaus (Xiao et al., 2002) and are characterized by rapid seasonal changes,
which plays an important role in the regional climate and any available water resources (Goodison et
al., 1999).
The fourth assessment report published by the International Panel on Climate Change (IPCC 4AR)
found that global warming is unequivocal, and has been confirmed by a rise in average air and ocean
temperatures, the widespread melting of snow and ice, and a rise in mean sea level. The IPCC 4AR
also concluded that warming is expected to be greatest in the extreme environments of high northern
latitudes and upper alpine basins. It is anticipated that snow cover will diminish and that heat waves
and heavy precipitation events will become more frequent.

Going After Cacciato by Tim O Brien Essay
Going After Cacciato #65279;It is generally recognized that Tim O Brien s Going After Cacciato
(1978) is most likely the best novel of the Vietnam war, albeit an unusual one in that it innovatively
combines the experiential realism of war with surrealism, primarily through the overactive
imagination of the protagonist, Spec Four Paul Berlin. The first chapter of this novel is of more than
usual importance. Designed to be a self sufficient story (McCaffery 137) and often anthologized as
one, this chapter is crucial to the novel in that it not only introduces us to the characters and the
situation but also sets the tenor of the novel and reveals its author s view of this war in relation to
which all else in the novel must be ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
One thing that the book misses, however, is the same suffering, perhaps even worse, that was imposed
upon the Vietnamese people. This is typical of novels from this time; they all exhibit a bold
ethnocentricism (Lomperis 5).
However, the first chapter does contain one very powerful image of destruction from the Vietnamese
viewpoint, which helps to make this somber portrait of the Vietnam War more complete. We are told
that Berlin and his squad are taking refuge inside a nearly ruined Buddhist pagoda: ...in shadows was
the cross legged Buddha, smiling from its elevated stone perch. The pagoda was cold. Dank from a
month of rain, the place smelled of clays and silicates and dope and old incense. It was a single square
room built like a pillbox with stone walls and a flat ceiling that forced the men to stoop or kneel. Once
it might have been a fine house of worship, but now it was junk. Sandbags blocked the windows. Bits
of broken pottery lay under chipped pedestals. The buddha s right arm was missing, but the smile was
intact. Head cocked, the statue seemed interested in the lieutenant s long sigh. (O Brien 4) In this
otherwise very American novel, which focuses on the American soldiers experiences, feelings, and
minds (Lomperis 63), and in which Vietnam is presented primarily as merely a terrain and a climate,
this image of the pagoda seems to be symbolic of the country of Vietnam at this time. Invaded,
desecrated, nearly destroyed, it still endured,

Merchant of Venice Antonio
Bigoted and spiteful and well intentioned and loyal , which of these views best describes the character
of Antonio in your question. In Merchant of Venice , Antonio is the main character as he is the
merchant in the story in Venice. As Antonio is a Christian, he is quite anti Semitic and rude to
Shylock, making some people believe that he is spiteful and bigoted. However, most of the play
centers on him being the victim of the villain of the play, Shylock due to their bond they made. As
Antonio is willing to give everything for Bassanio without any payment and he strikes at any chance
to help Bassanio, I believe Shakespearian and modern audiences would believe him to be more of a
well intentioned and loyal friend. At the start ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The word dare shows his bravery in helping Bassanio, seeing as his first time bounding himself for
Bassanio turned out to be a life and death situation. This time, Antonio doesn t need Shylock or
anyone else s taunting to agree to a bond, but for the sake of Bassanio and Portia s happiness, he is
willing to put his soul upon the forfeit . He not only gives his life, he also gives his soul. This sounds
more religious and important than dying, so Antonio shows his most extreme means and greater
commitment in ensuring Bassanio s happiness. This strongly displays his well intentions behind his
actions. However, this also suggests that this bond will not end well, because in the first bond, Antonio
failed to return the money. All in all, Antonio is well intentioned and certainly very loyal towards
Bassanio, as he helps his friend as well as he can quite a few times and the only reason behind his
actions is their friendship, showing his benevolence. Even though Antonio is quite mean to Shylock,
showing anti semitism but overall, this main character is surely seen as a kind hearted and faithful
friend in audiences of all ages and

  • 2. Blacks and the Media Essay example Racism and discrimination continue to be a prevalent problem in American society. Although minorities have made significant strides toward autonomy and equality, the images in media, specifically television, continue to misrepresent and manipulate the public opinion of blacks. It is no longer a blatant practice upheld by the law and celebrated with hangings and beatings, but instead it is a subtle practice that is perceived in the entertainment and media industries. Poll taxes meant lower income citizens could not vote. Kilamuwa Relief Summary In the article The Kilamuwa Relief: Ethnicity, Class and Power in Iron Age North Syria, the author Brian Brown argues that the Kilamuwa relief expresses the ethnic identity of its makers, as understood by the members of the ruling class. He writes that the relief does not reflect a long standing identity, but rather, expresses a new identity created for the upper class by the king Kilamuwa. The author supports his thesis by analyzing several aspects of the relief. He first notes the architectural setting. The relief is located in a royal monumental building, which is a typical Assyrian practice, and it is not near the town s gates (344 5). Brown believes that this, along with the ruler s comment of the ineffectiveness of past rulers, may indicate a rejection of those who came before him (345). Even today, market economies rely on practices that have a resemblance to those of the middle ages and antiquity. Jordan Clary Professor Debra Owens Human Resource Management 27 September 2017 Generational Differences in the Classroom Most people have a learning style that mirrors how they were taught when they were younger. It should be noted that there is not a one size fits all method when it comes to learning. The key to being able to appeal to each of the different generations is to offer diversity in teaching styles in order to satisfy the different preferences. This generation occupies a lot of top executive roles in the workforce and are not retiring as they were expected to (Levonius, 2015). The Baby Boomers were taught to grow up questioning authority and standing up for themselves when they needed to. Around the time this generation was in school there was a grade inflation in the educational system, and the Boomer s strived to achieve these high grade marks. Baby Boomers were taught in a linear fashion, they were taught by lecture, and the technology they had included overhead projectors and some videos (Warren, 2012). Since this generation was accustomed to trying to achieve high grades they became achievement oriented adults. Education was quite a bit different from earlier generations in this era (Olson, 2011). There was more emphasis placed on students to finish high school, and for the first time in history more students were attending college. • 25. The Education System Of The 21st Century In the 21st century, many American students are wondering why they are even going to college at all, which begs to question, what is the purpose of education in the 21st century. As with any big question, there are multiple takes on the higher education system in America. Walter Kirn, a Princeton Alumni, describes education as a meritocracy, where those with merit, or wealth in this case, can rise to the top, in a personal narrative Lost in the Meritocracy describing what education in the 21st century is. His experiences show us the life of an Ivy Leaguer in modern times, which is very different from the common portrayal of an Ivy League student. Kirn s experiences and life at Princeton comically contradict his own university s mission statement, while still highlighting the pressure put on Ivy League students with an aptitude for showing aptitude (Kirn 143) Kirn s narrative shows the flaws and cracks in higher education, cracks that Liz Coleman former president of Bennington College believes call for a reform of liberal arts education. In her TedTalk, Coleman shows us how to get education back to its roots, or what it should be. Using rhetorical devices created by Aristotle, pathos, appealing to emotion; ethos, appealing to expertise; or logos, appealing to logic; Kirn, Coleman, and various universities are able to convince the reader of their point of view. In fact such an important part that is has called for many changes through out its history. One of the main changes is the body. In the 1950 s the body was made mostly of steel. This was okay if you like bulky, heavy, gas guzzling cars. The main reason why steel was so widely used is that the steel industry was so huge and steel was so cheep that it was the logical thing to use. The problem with drum brakes was that they heated up easily and by heating up that would cause failure to the brakes, (Coates Del, Brake System 1). Drum brakes would mostly heat up when traveling down hill, as one would have to apply the brake often and there being no ventilation it was a accident waiting to happen. Most drum brakes where mechanically actuated (Coates, Brake systems 2). This means that the brakes where actuated by a cable and caused them to lock up very easily. The hydraulic brake was introduced in the 1950 s (Coates Brakes Systems 3). This new braking system used fluid to apply pressure and greatly reduced lock up. Disc Brakes have become the premiere stopping system on cars today. Disc brakes do not trap water as drum brakes tend to do which causes them to slip and fail. Disc brakes also allow more surface area to accept pressure from the brake pads making stopping faster. In addition to disc brakes ABS (Anti lock Braking System) was introduced on motor vehicles in the United States as a safety feature (Coates ABS Brake Systems). • 32. Biological Branches Of The Complex Study Of Life ABSTRACT Throughout history, there have been many studies conducted regarding different biological branches of the complex study of life. Amylase, an enzyme that catabolizes starch polymers, is one of the most important enzymes needed for the production of certain foods, such as syrups, and different processes such as fermentation. Like everything s biological nature, these certain enzymes are affected by different factors ranging from pH levels to temperature. Finding out the temperature at which these enzymes reach their optimal condition (conditions at which these enzymes work the best), is one of the most revealing studies of all. In this experiment, the affect that temperature has on the enzymatic activity of Amylase was the leading role, whether it was to determine if it was slowing it down or speeding it up. For both experiments, iodine was used as the control. First, the optimal temperatures of fungal Amylase were tested. For this particular task, there was not too much changed noticed. For most of the temperatures, the activity change seen was very minimal. With iodine and starch by itself, the activity remained the same as well as with the amylase at the 85 degrees test. When testing for the bacterial Amylase, the most change was seen at the 55 degrees test. Overall, it can be said that as temperature rises or decreases, enzymatic activity is affected, but of course with a certain plateau. INTRODUCTION When it comes to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 41. The Biological And Environmental Causes Of Alpine Ecosystems Introduction Alpine Ecosystems Alpine lands account for approximately 20% of the Earth s total terrestrial land mass and house almost 10% of the world s population (Ives and Messerli, 1999). Alpine ecosystems are categorized similarly to high latitudinal locations as extreme ecosystems . In these ecosystems, there are controls to the environmental variables that govern their hydrological and biological cycles. For example, they often experience extreme conditions of light, temperature, and precipitation that may restrict and limit vegetation growing conditions and the abundance of live animals. However, these limiting conditions have also established the ideal conditions for a wide distribution of snow and ice across mountains and plateaus (Xiao et al., 2002) and are characterized by rapid seasonal changes, which plays an important role in the regional climate and any available water resources (Goodison et al., 1999). The fourth assessment report published by the International Panel on Climate Change (IPCC 4AR) found that global warming is unequivocal, and has been confirmed by a rise in average air and ocean temperatures, the widespread melting of snow and ice, and a rise in mean sea level. The IPCC 4AR also concluded that warming is expected to be greatest in the extreme environments of high northern latitudes and upper alpine basins. The first chapter of this novel is of more than usual importance. Designed to be a self sufficient story (McCaffery 137) and often anthologized as one, this chapter is crucial to the novel in that it not only introduces us to the characters and the situation but also sets the tenor of the novel and reveals its author s view of this war in relation to which all else in the novel must be ... This is typical of novels from this time; they all exhibit a bold ethnocentricism (Lomperis 5). However, the first chapter does contain one very powerful image of destruction from the Vietnamese viewpoint, which helps to make this somber portrait of the Vietnam War more complete. We are told that Berlin and his squad are taking refuge inside a nearly ruined Buddhist pagoda: ...in shadows was the cross legged Buddha, smiling from its elevated stone perch. The pagoda was cold. Dank from a month of rain, the place smelled of clays and silicates and dope and old incense. It was a single square room built like a pillbox with stone walls and a flat ceiling that forced the men to stoop or kneel. Once it might have been a fine house of worship, but now it was junk. Sandbags blocked the windows. Bits of broken pottery lay under chipped pedestals. The buddha s right arm was missing, but the smile was intact. Head cocked, the statue seemed interested in the lieutenant s long sigh. (O Brien 4) In this otherwise very American novel, which focuses on the American soldiers experiences, feelings, and minds (Lomperis 63), and in which Vietnam is presented primarily as merely a terrain and a climate, this image of the pagoda seems to be symbolic of the country of Vietnam at this time. Invaded, desecrated, nearly destroyed, it still endured, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 43. Merchant of Venice Antonio Bigoted and spiteful and well intentioned and loyal , which of these views best describes the character of Antonio in your question. In Merchant of Venice , Antonio is the main character as he is the merchant in the story in Venice. As Antonio is a Christian, he is quite anti Semitic and rude to Shylock, making some people believe that he is spiteful and bigoted. However, most of the play centers on him being the victim of the villain of the play, Shylock due to their bond they made. As Antonio is willing to give everything for Bassanio without any payment and he strikes at any chance to help Bassanio, I believe Shakespearian and modern audiences would believe him to be more of a well intentioned and loyal friend. At the start ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The word dare shows his bravery in helping Bassanio, seeing as his first time bounding himself for Bassanio turned out to be a life and death situation. This time, Antonio doesn t need Shylock or anyone else s taunting to agree to a bond, but for the sake of Bassanio and Portia s happiness, he is willing to put his soul upon the forfeit . He not only gives his life, he also gives his soul. This sounds more religious and important than dying, so Antonio shows his most extreme means and greater commitment in ensuring Bassanio s happiness. This strongly displays his well intentions behind his actions. However, this also suggests that this bond will not end well, because in the first bond, Antonio failed to return the money. All in all, Antonio is well intentioned and certainly very loyal towards Bassanio, as he helps his friend as well as he can quite a few times and the only reason behind his actions is their friendship, showing his benevolence. Even though Antonio is quite mean to Shylock, showing anti semitism but overall, this main character is surely seen as a kind hearted and faithful friend in audiences of all ages and ...
