citizenship, by the Fourteenth Amendment, in the year of 1868; segregation did not end until almost a
hundred years later, in 1964. The separate but equal doctrine allowed segregation as long as blacks
and whites had equal facilities. During the time of separate but equal many debated whether this
doctrine was constitutional or not. The monumental Supreme Court cases Plessy vs Ferguson and
Brown vs Board of Education shaped America s society by deciding the constitutionality of the
separate but equal doctrine. In the year of 1896, the Supreme Court case Plessy vs Ferguson shaped
America s society by concluding that the separate but equal doctrine was constitutional. This all began
when Homer Plessy, who was one eighth black, sat in the white designated train car. He was arrested
because he was in violation of the 1890 Separate Car Act, which declared that all rail companies must
implement separate but equal accommodations for white and black passengers. Plessy contended in
court that the Act infringed upon the Thirteenth and Fourteenth Amendments. After two unsuccessful
attempts in lower courts, he took his case to the Supreme Court, which upheld the earlier rulings that
segregation is constitutional under the separate but equal doctrine. The Supreme Court decision for
Plessy vs Ferguson ruled in favor of Ferguson, 7 1. The majority found that the separate but equal
doctrine did not violate the Thirteenth and Fourteenth Amendment, while the minority found the

The Safety Man is about a man who is anything but safe. He drinks on work nights several times
throughout the story. He bought a dog and drunkenly left it at the pound. He took several pills and
drank on them. The story had a very solemn tone to it. You could tell that the man was in a downward
spiral. The story climaxed in a scene where the safety man gets into a fight with a coworker because

The advancement of technology has impacted many areas of life, especially the workforce. Advances
in technology, such as the development of the robot, have started to have a significant impact on the
individual worker. These workers come from many different areas of life, some including
manufacturing, service, and jobs that do not require much education. For example, manufacturing jobs
have been impacted by the robot because the robot is able to perform manufacturing skills at an easier
and faster rate than humans. Jobs that also do not require extensive education will be impacted

The industrialization of cities, such as Berlin, greatly increased the price of living for the working
class. Because of this, children who were a cheap source of labor, were often times expected to work
daily for meager earnings. This process is exhibited in the engraving titled Orphan Girls and Boys in a
Welfare Institution. The images are set in Germany in 1846 and display orphaned girls working in a
