Identity In Good Country People
Identity in Good Country People
Characterization is the biggest component that helps build on the themes of identity in the short
story Good Country People written by Flannery O connor. The theme itself is dependent where as
the characters are independent of each other. The characters behaviors build within each other.
Firstly, the main character in this short story is thirty two year old Joy who is now known as
Hulga. Her character is described as vulnerable to other people but in her eyes is seen as superior
to every other character. The feeling of superiority plays a role with her numerous degrees in
philosophy. The perspective of Hulgas identity to other people is indebtedness, this is because of
her hunting accident when she was ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Hulga, limited by her disabilities of being handicapped and her weak heart as she grew older,
her life has been restricted to the home she grew up in which is why she distants herself from
everyone and has only sticked with her belief in philosophy. Mrs. Hopewell s character is based
on her simplistic view of everyone either being a good country people whom are described as
poorer than landowners like mrs Hopewell and Hulga or white trash describes as poor and
uncultured. She is just like Hulga in the sense that she believes she is superior to everyone else
and thinks she can distinguish between these two classes which are the hard working people or
the untrustworthy people. Mrs. Hopewell has never really let Hulga grow up and still treats her
as if she was still a ten year old because she does think philosophy would open many doors for her
daughter and has never accepted her the way she is. Hulga has all the education and degrees to
start her own life but her mother is the cause of this pause in her life. In comparison to, Mrs.
Freeman who is the complete opposite of Mrs. Hopewell whom she has worked for, for four
years. O connor does not show her point of view in this short story only what Mrs. Hopewell and
Hulga describe her to be. She is described as very outspoken on whatever he thoughts are. She is
very familiar and used to the unexpected due to her daughter Carramaes early marriage and
pregnancy at the age of fifteen.

Did the fact that I am gay slip your mind? I asked Cassidy, who seemed to be bouncing off the

The Importance Of Equal Employment Opportunity
Equal employment opportunity is vital and considered important to be practiced in organization. If
employees in their jobs perceived that they have the same opportunity they in turn will have lower
intention to leave the organization (Konovsky, 1989). If an organization may offers its employee
equal opportunity and also equal benefits for recognizing their efforts, employee in return for this
opportunity and benefits will become highly committed to the organization and develops in them a
sense of obligation to reciprocate to the organization. It helps in reducing the turnover intentions in
the organization among employees (Tansky Cohen, 2001). For example, provide equal opportunity
for salary growth and training. There was another researcher illustrating main emphasize in an
organization should be on improving the issues related to fair hiring practices, fair workload
distribution and enhancing equal opportunities in career development or promotion in order to
reduce turnover intentions (Chambers, 2008).
According to Poon (2004), there are reported results which show that employees intentions to quit
will be affected due to lack of equal employment opportunities in the organization. Moreover, it is
found that an employee in the work place who feels that an organization provide equal employment
opportunity by showing support in terms of caring or his or her well being will be motivated to
stay with that organization (Godfrey, 2010).

Political, Social, Legal And Economic System
Introduction
China, the world s second largest economic power, one of five permanent members of the United
Nations Security Council, and the only Communist Party led authoritarian state in the G 20
grouping of major economies (Susan V. Lawrence, 2012). Over the last three decades, the value
of Chinese trade has approximately doubled every four years. This rapid growth has transformed
the country from a negligible player in world trade to the world s second largest exporter, as well
as a substantial importer of raw materials, intermediate inputs, and other goods. What businesses
must focus on is how a country s political system impacts the economy and the particular industry.

The Communist Party of China (CPC), which has 80 million members currently, has been in power
in China for more than six decades (Thomas Lum, 2009). CPC is fundamentally different from the
multiparty or two party system in Western capitalism countries. CPC is also different with some
countries imposed a one party system. Political stability is a critical point for a country to attract
foreign company investing in their country. Businesses need to assess if a country believes in free
markets, government control, or heavy intervention in industry.
Social System China, the world s largest society, is created by a set of institutions that across
extensive linguistic, environmental, and subcultural differences (Hays, 2012). Residents of the
southern and northern regions of the country might not understand each other s language, enjoy
each other s foods, or make a living from each other s land. China has diversity of people and

the other groups include Tibetans, Mongolians, Zhuang, Li and Miao whose languages and
customs are quite different from those of the Han (SACU, 2001). The official language in China is
Mandarin (Beijing dialect), as spoken in Beijing (the Capital), but there are also many different
dialects to listen for. The main different in China is Mainland such as Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Shanghai

Intel Corporation (INTC)
The first company I invested in was Intel Corporation (INTC). In 1968 the Intel Corporation was
founded by Bob Noyce and Gordon Moore. They originally went with the name MN Electronics
as More Noise but concluded it has a bad connotation on their image and Noise associated with
electronics was not what they wanted their image looking like. They eventually moved to

In 1976 Intel releases its first single board computer, this gave the company endless possibilities
when it came to the expansion of technology and the growth of the internet. Fast forwarding about
twenty years brings us to the release of the Pentium processor in 1993, this revolutionized the
computing standard of the public, computers were growing more and more getting faster and faster.
In 1999 Dow Jones added Intel to its list triggering a spike in the price of share to around $70. It
dropped back down but has been on a steady rise ever since. I purchased the stock when it was at a
low of about $27, the stock is currently around $35. I noticed in recent trends that they make most
of their profit around Christmas time so I knew it was a good investment that was bound to go up.
Although the price goes up around the end of the year I have to make sure I don t hold on to the
stock too long because just like anything whatever goes up must come down and after Christmas on
past graphs show the price dropping significantly.
Intel is to this day working on not only making processors (what most of us know them by) but
keeping up with the constant change in modern technology and working towards the future of
technology making the average person s life easier.
Intel did financially phenomenal this year. As of September 26th

Relationship Between Grey And Cameron
The relationship between Grey and Cameron deteriorated rapidly throughout the Waikato Wars.
Grey was constantly searching for one determining knockout blow to defeat Maori forces, while
Cameron was a realist who realised that attacking the Maori Pa head on was suicidal. This
difference in opinion led to the two men arguing constantly which had a profound impact on the war.
The Waikato Wars (1863 1864) were a component of the New ZealandWars which were active
from 1845 to 1872. The wars have also commonly been known as the Maori Wars or the Land
Wars . During these wars there was a huge divide in society. Many people debate whether these
wars were over land or sovereignty. The New Zealand wars were a series of individual battles
between the higher government and various Maori tribes.
The Wars were caused by a miss understanding of ownership between Maori and Pakeha. When the
British settlers came to New Zealand they thought that the Maori were utilising the land like they
should. The settlers wanted to buy the land off the Maori but they refused. But of course, they all
had different views. Maori pass on land from generations and inherit it from their ancestors, whereas
Pakeha can just trade the land more money.
Grey and Cameron s relationship deteriorated hugely during the Invasion of the Waikato. Sir
George Grey (born 1812) made a huge impact on New Zealand during the Waikato Wars. He played
a lead role in the wars between 1863 and 1864.

Polish Tradition And Culture
This past Christmas Eve, my Polish grandmother joined us to make our traditional Polish dinner,
and she insisted that we make pierogies, a Polish dumpling, from scratch. The process was long
and messy, but worth it. During the nine hour cooking period I began to think that I have always
loved Polish food, but I don t know much about it. This experience points out my limited
knowledge of my own culture. With better understanding of Polish traditions and culture, I can be

The first thing to do when making pierogies is to put together the dough. Usually, The dough is
made from flour, eggs, and warm water ( History of Polish Pierogi ). This is most important part of
the pierogi, because if the dough is not good the whole thing will fall apart. Next, is the filling.
The pierogi commonly come in three varieties, pierogi with cabbage, cheese and potatoes
(pierogi ruskie), and meat (pierogi miesem). Once the type is decided, The filling is placed in the
middle, and the dough folded over to form a half circle or rounded triangle shape. The edges are
pressed together to seal the pierogi, so that the filling stays inside during the cooking process. The
pierogi are cooked in boiling water until they float on the surface ( History of Polish Pierogi ).
The dough is the most important step, even though this part is crucial, it decides whether or not
the pierogi survives through cooking. Pierogies also come in sweet varieties along with savory.
Sweet pierogies are filed with applesauce or jam ( History of Polish Pierogi ). Leaving sweet
varieties aside, the last step in cooking pierogies is topping them off. They are usually finished
with onions, mushrooms, bacon, and melted butter ( History of Polish Pierogi ). There are many
different ways to make a pierogi, but this is the most common way and probably the most

Marjane Satrapi uses different techniques to effect the reality of occurring events and culture in
the graphic novel, Persepolis. The author uses social class, gender, and racial differences within
the graphic novel to effect the reality of occurring events such as the Iranian revolution during
1979. Social class differences are effective in the graphic novel Persepolis because the way
Marjane presents the information shows how everyone is treated differently depending on their
social class. There are many events that occur during the graphic novel that give example of the
difference in treatment of social classes. Even during the 20th century, men and women were not

Dad, are you for or against social classes? Soon after there was a new maid in Marji s home. The
author utilizes this in her graphic novel to show the reader how social class affected Iranians in
different ways than just how wealthy they are or are not. Gender partially relates to how the
social class affects Iranians because women were not treated respectively as they should have
and men were also at times not treated respectively. For example, children at the age of eight had
to leave their homes to go work for other families, such as Mehri. Boys and girls left their homes
to work as maids, window washers, or carpet weavers. These children of Iranian families and
citizens of Iran had to leave their homes to work because their families grew large and because of

Changing Native American Stereotypes in the Film, Dances with Wolves
The film Dances with Wolves, that was written by Michael Blake and directed by Kevin Costner,
helps to shift our perspective of Native Americans from one of stereotypical distaste, to one of
support and respect. According to an anonymous critic on www.eFilmcritic.com This is one of the
few westerns that devotes its time to looking at the plight of the American Indians (particularly the
Sioux), who were thought by some as even more subhuman than blacks during the 1800 s (and even
during parts of the 1900 s). It has always been thought that Native Americans of old were savage,

He sees them as real people. As people that are just looking out for their families and don t want to
lose their heritage.
The Sioux are very perplexed by John. He comes to the army fort and he doesn t seem to be
afraid of them like everyone else is. They are not just going to go out and kill him. He didn t do
anything to harm or threaten their lifestyle, so why should they bother him. They don t know
how to react to him. Every time they make an appearance to him, he seems friendly and acts like
he wants to get to know them. Now here is a prime instance of how the Sioux do not fit into the
typical view of Indians. The typical view is that Native Americans don t care about other people
and they just go around killing everyone for the fun of it. This is totally opposite of that. In the
film, the Sioux make numerous appearances to John without being threatening at all. They just
want to try and get to know him and see what he is there for.
According to people from our my English Composition class there are a lot of scenes in Dances
with Wolves that illustrate the view of Indians as brutal savages. Some of these include: beating
people on the head with a mace, shooting of dog, wagon train remains, driver of the mule train
killed, yanking captive lady off the horse, and killing of peasant. These are just a few that can be
interpreted as savage. There were also views of when they came to think of the Indians as friends

The United States Postal Service
The United States Postal Service (USPS) has been served as government institute since 1971.
During the nineteenth century, the USPS contributed to many people in several ways across the
United Stated. The twentieth century brought significant growth to the USPS, including different
size of package delivery service and airmail. Over the past decade, however, it has to compete with
electronic mailand various package delivery companies and it causes to have bad result. The
USPS faced with decreasing of total mail volume. The loss of income has induced the USPS to
consider changing their system of service such as shortage of delivery days. The online article in
a national newspaper (Source C) refers customers are continuing to migrate to the Internet and to
cheaper standard mail options and this causes to find new service system such as an end to
Saturday deliveries, longer delivery times for letters and packages, higher postage stamp prices that
exceed the rate of inflation, and the potential for future layoffs. I agree the USPS need to make
some significant changes at this point. However, I think that they need opposite way to continuing
their services such as getting into the e business, increase service, and advertise with coupons
(Source A). The 2009 annual report of the United States Postal Service(Source B) shows the
problems in a graphic. Since 2000 to 2009, mail volumes are decreasing whereas the delivery
points are increasing and the employees are decreasing.

Edmund Spenser s Dazzling Quest for Virtue in The Faerie Queene
Voyeur: one who habitually seeks sexual stimulation by visual means (Webster s Ninth New
Collegiate Dictionary). According to Baby s Record, as a child my favorite stories included
Daniel in the Lions Den, Jonah and the Whale, Elisha and the 40 Children Eaten by the Bears,
The Three Little Pigs, and Goldilocks and the Three Bears. Before sex came violence, tamed by a
mother s lap and blessed by the inspired Word. Voyeurism may well be the relation . . . of every
reader to every novel, of every spectator to every painting, play and film (Paglia 191); as an
innocent child, I had already allowed my untamed pagan eye to feast fully upon the delightful

In my teaching I privileged the ethical voice, neglecting undoubtedly a wanton voice, dissolving
the other into lust by its delicacy and splendor (Paglia 190). But now that I have read Sexual
Personae I can no longer absolve myself of guilt for the pornographic eye in Spenser always wins
(192).
As a maverick literary critic, Paglia resists easy categorization. She rejects certain assumptions of
contemporary criticism which substitutes political criteria for esthetic values. (It is easier to devise
a quota system for the canon and its priesthood than to worship together). But her appreciation of
Spenser is based upon a central tenant of deconstructionism: suspicion of the text. Paglia asserts that
The Faerie Queene is didactic but also self pleasuring (190). Spenser does not say what he means,
for imagination can overwhelm moral intention (191). In other words, the visual fireworks
generated by the poet contradict his intended message, that of showing us how to achieve holiness
in the midst of a perverse world. The fight against evil stimulates rather than quenches the desires of
the flesh.
A serious charge indeed. No less surprising is Paglia s comparison of Spenser with Chaucer who
opposes extremism in all things (172). The earthy, natural Chaucer who accepts humanity with all
its foibles is seen as more Christian than Spenser with his dazzling quest for virtue. Apparently
Spenser glories, like Paglia, in an aristocratic,

used in everywhere, from bags for groceries to bones holder for surgery. But plastic have become

effective way to reduce the amount of plastic, but researcher found only 5% of plastic bags

three of the stories in different parts of the hero s journey. In the Crossing the Threshold part of
the hero s journey, Star Wars and the Hunger games are very alike because Katniss and Luke have
both only ever lived in one place. The minute that they leave their towns, it s like they enter a
whole different world even though they haven t quite gone on their adventure yet. But A Wrinkle in

risks her life to go save her little brother Charles Wallace from IT. But in Star Wars it is a little bit
different because Luke is the only one left to blow up the death star, and he is not only fighting to

The Importance Of Cultural Imperialism
The Kiowa are a Native American people who have been greatly impacted by cultural imperialism.
They were forced to adapt to western culture, and in this many of the Kiowa people were converted
to Christianity. Christianity is said to be a very important aspect of many Native American cultures
still today, but the way in which Christianity is portrayed and practiced in such societies, including
that of the Kiowa, stays true to both the religion itself and their Native practices. The Kiowa are
said to have kiowanized Christianity. The Kiowa version of Christianity is said to differ from the
white man s way. This means that they believe in God, integrate their culture and lifestyles into
Christianity, and they also relay the importance of their religion in a different manner. They use
their native language in their hymns, and these hymns are comprised primarily of those elements
that pertain directly to Kiowa culture. In the text Lassiter states, Kiowa hymns give life to a unique
Kiowa experience, preserve the language, and affirm and ongoing (and continually unfolding)
Kiowa spirituality. This reveals the effectiveness and importance of the integration of Christianity
and native Kiowa practices. Language has been a central focus of anthropological interest for many
reasons. List three reasons and discuss why they are important. Think about language in broad or
general anthropological sense when addressing this question. What are the connections among play,

Malaria Is A Disease That Affects The World s Poorest
CUNY Nobel Science Challenge Malaria is a disease that affects nearly 600 million people and
causes more than a million deaths a year, the most coming from children under five. This disease is
regularly found in more than 100 countries around the world and affects 40% of the world s
population. It is most commonly transmitted by an infected Anopheles mosquito. The most deadly
form of malariais known as Plasmodium falciparum because almost all deaths from malaria are
caused by this specific one. Some of the symptoms that are affiliated with this strand of malaria are
the destruction of red blood cells along with complications with the kidneys, lungs, and brain. In
more serious cases, it can cause permanent neurological effects and even death. As the Nobel
Assembly said at the announcement of the Nobel Prizein Physiology or Medicine, Diseases caused
by parasites have plagued humankind for a millennium and constitute a major global health
problem. In particular, parasitic diseases affect the world s poorest populations and represent a huge
barrier to improving human health and wellbeing . Youyou Tu, one of the winners of the prize,
discovered Artemisinin, a drug that has significantly reduced the mortality rates for patients
suffering from malaria by killing the malaria parasites an early stage of their development. The
story on the creation of the drug Artemisinin is an interesting one. During the Chinese Cultural

For the purpose of this assignment the focus will be on children and young people who are
placed on the Child Protection Register and the Integrated Children s Computer System. It will
look at the current legal, social and policy framework for the child protection register and the
integrated children s computer system and provide an analytical review on how they have been
developed. Included for each of these three areas will be an evaluation of how and why they
have evolved to contain a higher contribution from the service user and carer and the effect these
have had on the delivery of anti oppressive services to a diverse range of individuals and service

The law delivers the structure for social work with children and families, through a basis of duties
and powers that reinforce and deliver protective actions when necessary (Wilson et al, 2011).
The Children Act 1989 was to provide every child with the right to be safeguarded from
mistreatment and the right for investigations to take place to protect their well being. Its vital
principle was that, for children, it is more beneficial for them to be looked after within their own
family if possible (Parliament, 1989). The act did not come into force in England and Wales until
1991 although it was given royal accent in 1989. It is comprehensive and incorporates virtually
all the law relating to children. The Act introduced new principles, powers and duties on local
authorities. Following the statutory guidance in Working Together under the Children Act 1989
(Department of Health, Home Office and Department for Education and Skills, 1999) the Child
Protection Register was designed. It was a documentation of all children in each area for whom
there were unresolved child protection matters. The aim of the child protection register was to
enable agencies and professionals to be aware of those children who are judged to be at continuing
risk of Significant Harm (Department of Health, Home Office and Department for Education and
Skills, 1999). During 2004 the Children Act 1989 was overhauled and amended by

Atlantis Vision Center Research Paper
July is Sunglass Awareness Month at Atlantis Vision Center. Seems like a great time to explore the
history of the accessory that s fashionable, functional, and fun to wear.
Did you know people have been using eyewear to block out the sun for about two thousand
years? The first people to use sun blocking eyewear were the people of the Thule culture, who
were ancestors of the modern Inuit. They wore snow goggles, made of bone, leather, and wood.
They cut small slits which only let through a small sliver of light, effectively shielding the eyes from
the bright glare of sunlight that reflected off the snow.
In the 12th century, Chinese judges would wear sunglasses to hide their expression as they
questioned witnesses. These spectacles were made of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
They didn t protect from the sun s rays, but the idea of altering the vision through colored lenses
makes these items a predecessor of modern day sunglasses.
For centuries, glasses were held in place by either metal that pinched the nose or loops of ribbon
that wrapped around the ears. People who wore these glasses surely grew tired of pushing them
back into place, so English optician Edward Scarlett invented temple gripping sidepieces around
1730.
The first glasses with UVA lenses were made in 18th century Venice. Because they were used by
noblemen to shield their eyes from the sun s reflection on the lagoon, these shades were known as
gondola glasses
James Ayscough was the first to start experimenting with tinted lenses in the 18th century. These
weren t sunglasses, however. The blue or green tinted glass was believed to correct for specific
vision impairments. And yellow and brown tinted glasses were used by victims of syphilis in the
19th century because one of the symptoms of syphilis is sensitivity to

Summary Of A Bust Of Julius Caesar
In response to the reading, the lecturer presents new conclusions that have been drawn about a bust

lecturer explains why this is probably not the case.
First, the lecturer agrees that realism was a prevalent art style during the life of Julius Caesar;
however, it was also a prevalent style of art throughout many eras of human history. Since realism
has been a style of art in many periods, this information does little to prove the date of the bust.
Additionally, while the reading references the similarities in the hairline of the bust with that of
Roman coins of the time, the lecturer notices some differences. He explains that the nose

Further, highlighting positive elements and concealing negative ones is another form of doublespeak

makes the simple appear complex, the ordinary profound, and the obvious insightful. In this
sense it is not used to express but to impress (3). That is, instead of delivering a simple answer,
instead, a rather complex or probably not comprehended one is offered. For example, car dealers
use a tricky language of doublespeak such as, base price, add on interest, blue book, dealer

Analyzing Women in Abusive Relationships
One can be harmed socially from an abusive relationship. With women, abuse in a prior
relationship can lead to difficulty committing to someone in a new relationship. Abuse can also
develop trust issues. This not only negatively affects relationships in regards to dating people,
but friendships and relationships with family members, and other people. Thankfully there are
many resources for males and females to use if they ve been abused in a relationship. However,
if one has developed trust issues, it may also be difficult for them to open up not only to people
who they ve had prior relationships with of different types, but also new people. Sending
someone for counseling that was in an abusive relationship can only help if the person who was
abused is willing to open up to the counselor. A person who was abused may not be willing to
speak about how they were abused because they are embarrassed or scared. Many other factors can
lead to one not wanting to open up. One can be impacted physically from an emotional relationship
in many negative ways. Bruises, cuts, and broken bones are all common from physical abuse. Males
and females who were abused sexually may experience pain during sexual intercourse in the area
of their genitals. Some people who are abused use things such as alcohol, drugs, or tobacco to help
them cope. All of these choices can negatively impact one s physical state. Medical conditions such
as heart disease can be brought on from physical abuse in the

Theme Of Barbie Doll And The Death Of Marilyn Monroie
Poetry has a way of expressing its rage, grief, and irony at society and its social pressures.
Although each poem is different, they can carry a similar message that resonance with its
audience. Barbie Doll by Marge Piercy and The Death of Marilyn Monroe by Sharon Olds
express how beauty weighs women s lives and cause a tragic end from being the perfect specimen.
Both discuss a similar theme but carry the message out a difference way. In order to understand its
similarities and differences it is necessary to analyze the text to find its denotation and connotation.

Both poems use names from iconic beauty icons. Barbies are seen by little girls and are the first
things to influence how they should define beauty. Normally the dolls have skinny bodies and
small noses and are able to have multiple careers and are admired by men. Thus, little girls grow
up wanting to be like Barbie. Marilyn Monroe is a sex icon who looks other women began to
copy. Unlike Barbie she was curvy and had an acting career, but she was also adored by men.
Both icons influenced women on how to look and impress men, but the influence becomes
problematic and difficult to maintain because only dolls and superstars to can survive that life.
Even idols cannot survive that life, as proven by Monroe. Only Barbie, an object can be seen as the
perfect woman. Both poems use these names to highlight how impossible it is for women to seen
as normal or to be accepted as they are. Thus, an early death can happen when the pressure is too
much to handle and each poem has a tone of sadness at both women s death. However, the Death
of Marilyn Monroe encourages women to live and not be like the icons they admire, while Barbie

Nowadays, aggressive and violent behaviour have been said to be caused by media violence in

aggression by one human or human like character against another while violent behaviour is
defined as overt and intentional physically aggressive behaviour against another person.

The findings indicated that despite the existence of a history of aggressive behaviour, the
hypothesis are supported. It was also consistent with the hypothesis that extensive television
viewing helps to explain the association between certain environmental risks and subsequent
aggressive behaviour, and also the bidirectional relationship between television violence and
aggressive behaviour.
The difference in the content of programs watched by males and females during adolescence and
early adulthood is yet to be explored. There has been little research has tested the general effect of
violent lyrics on aggressive behaviour while holding musical tone constant, even very little research

This study was aimed to examine the effect of violent lyrics with musical tone held constant and
compare the violent visual and auditory media effects.
There were two hypotheses raised from this study:
1. Music lyric combinations would arouse more aggression than music alone or lyric alone
aggression. 2. Violent music lyrics, adding to any priming effects from violent visual media, would
further increase the probability of aggressive behaviour.
Participants in this study were 194 university students and staff (99 females, 85 males) most of

The Great Gatsby Nick Carraway Narrator
Some would argue the most vital character of the story is the protagonist, however many more
would say it is the narrator. The narrator describes what his happening in the story, and we see
every moment through their eyes. But alas, not all narrators can be trusted. Especially in a time
like when The Great Gatsby, by F. Scott Fitzgerald, was written. The narrator for this book is Nick
Carraway, who grew up with his well off family in Chicago and then went to Yale. Throughout the
book, he reveals attributes about him that make him seem like a reliable narrator, however he may
very not be.
With the first few paragraphs of the novel, Fitzgerald starts to build a narrator that readers feel
they can really trust. For example, Nick begins the book quoting the advice he received from his
father remember that all the people in this world haven t had all the advantages that you ve had
(Fitzgerald 1). Then he goes on to state that he usually tries to reserve his judgements. One after
another, he stresses that he is not judgemental. Nick also has a secondary role, which means that he
is the one observing most situations rather than taking part in them. Fitzgerald makes him ... Show

Utilitarianism in Government
In its political philosophy utilitarianism provides an alternative to theories of natural law and the
social contract by basing the authority of government and the sanctity of individual rights upon
their utility, or measure of happiness gained. As an egalitarian doctrine, where everyone s happiness
counts equally, the rational, relatively straightforward nature of utilitarianismoffers an attractive
model for democratic government. It offers practical methods for deciding the morally right course
of action ...an action is right as it tends to promote happiness, wrong as it tends to diminish it, for
the party whose interests are in question (Bentham, 1780). To discover what we should do in a
given situation, we identify the various... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
One major point of contention, however, is that it is often difficult, if not impossible, to
measure and compare the values of certain benefits and costs. How does one assign value to
human life, or time, or artistic pleasures such as literature and music? Mill s response was to
introduce variables to pleasure. While Bentham concentrated on quantity (the pleasure s
duration, intensity, etc), Mill stressed quality. Adding the feature of quality to pleasure
differentiates higher , intellectual pleasures from common, physical ones. He argues in his
famous quote It is better to be a human being dissatisfied than a pig satisfied; better to be
Socrates dissatisfied than a fool satisfied. And if the fool, or the pig, are of a different opinion, it
is only because they only know their own side of the question . This reasoning is not very
satisfactory if we consider how subjective (and elitist) it can be. Who is to determine which
activities are more high brow or low brow, and what makes a competent judge? Mill states it
should be person who has experience of the activities in question, but a key aspect of utilitarianism
it the requirement of making these judgements impartially and impersonally. With the diversity of
this world it is highly unlikely that the tastes and preferences will all align in accord. Even if we
attempt to make our decisions based on how others would be affected, it is impossible for us to

When Does Fair Use Become Theft and Viceversa
Who really owns ideas, and how long should they hold them? When does Fair Use become Theft
and vice versa?
Those are the question raised in Brett Gaylor s documentary RiP: A Remix Manifesto, raises alarms
for those who think copyright holders have become too aggressive about protecting their
intellectual property.
The documentary highlights the popular music artist known as Girl Talk. Girl Talk consists of
one man named Gregg Gillis and he takes parts from different songs (usually popular ones) and
creates new music of his own. He doesn t use any of his own materials at all. A lot of people
consider his work stealing and what is known as Copyright infringement; even though he changes
the music so much, you can t even tell what all of the songs he uses are. Girl Talk is known as a
mash up artist, and according to the documentary, mash up artists have stirred up quite a
controversy with both the Copyright Company and the other artists they take their material from.
Copyright problems arose with the advent of the free availability of information on the Internet. It
was easy for people to steal music, movies and images from the internet and use them to create their
own mash up piece. Prior to the internet copyrighting actually encouraged creativity. Once music
sharing websites like Napster began, musicians and other artists began suing and copyright laws
became more rigouous in their scope and enforcement.

Gender Roles In STEM
Over the course of history, advances made by women in Science, Technology, Engineering, and
Mathematics (STEM) have been overshadowed and downplayed due to a male dominant culture
in these fields. The primary reason for these fields being dominated by males is the way women
have been forced into gender roles over the course of history. Women with ambition to build,
create, and discover have been discouraged from following their passions and are instead told to
focus on raising their children. This discrimination has hurt the overall progress in scientific
communities as it has limited women in the resources available to them and has forced them to
work in the shadows. Yet there has still been great progress in STEM made by women. Over the past

Many women end up surrounded by male peers with no one to relate to in their coursework. Women
may find themselves isolated in their classes and unable to find academic organizations on campus
that support women majoring in STEM. Being unrepresented in STEM academia and having a
limited amount of peers to relate to leads to discouragement. Women also face harsher criticism due
to male bias within the STEM communities. This criticism comes not only from their male peers,
but from administrative staff at institutions as well. One study shows that many woman applying for
STEM related scholarships have had to be up to 2.5 times more productive than men to be
considered equally competent (Barres, 386). This is again due to the gender stereotypes that have
become imbedded within society. This bias also means women pursuing STEM degrees are put at
a disadvantage in regards to selective processes for internships and academic clubs. By constantly
having to prove themselves and repeatedly being discouraged by their environment, women
studying STEM have a much harder time than men staying motivated in their courses. This of
course leads to lower grades and a greater likelihood of dropping out of their programs. It is also
safe to assume that creating an environment that causes women to constantly doubt themselves will
have a negative impact on their academic performance; any student male or female must believe in
themselves to be able to

Being homeless and on the streets, it gives the minors less chances in life and it also influences

The homeless minors have no one to look up to as a role model and have limited amounts of

there has been many cases of young adults and minors breaking into neighborhood houses and
robbing families. Around a month ago, there was a situation that I witnessed where this young
teen was going around a neighborhood stealing items from various houses. During that time, I was
also notified that these types of situations have been occurring a lot recently. Aside from this
incident, a couple months back a teen went into my aunt s shop and attempted to steal some of her

The Waikato Wars (1863 1864) were a component of the New ZealandWars which were active from 1845 to 1872. The wars have also commonly been known as the Maori Wars or the Land Wars . During these wars there was a huge divide in society. Many people debate whether these wars were over land or sovereignty. The New Zealand wars were a series of individual battles between the higher government and various Maori tribes. The Wars were caused by a miss understanding of ownership between Maori and Pakeha. When the British settlers came to New Zealand they thought that the Maori were utilising the land like they should. The settlers wanted to buy the land off the Maori but they refused. But of course, they all had different views. Maori pass on land from generations and inherit it from their ancestors, whereas Pakeha can just trade the land more money. Grey and Cameron s relationship deteriorated hugely during the Invasion of the Waikato. Sir George Grey (born 1812) made a huge impact on New Zealand during the Waikato Wars. Polish Tradition And Culture This past Christmas Eve, my Polish grandmother joined us to make our traditional Polish dinner, and she insisted that we make pierogies, a Polish dumpling, from scratch. This experience points out my limited knowledge of my own culture. With better understanding of Polish traditions and culture, I can be more helpful next time Christmas rolls around. Usually, The dough is made from flour, eggs, and warm water ( History of Polish Pierogi ). This is most important part of the pierogi, because if the dough is not good the whole thing will fall apart. Next, is the filling. The pierogi commonly come in three varieties, pierogi with cabbage, cheese and potatoes (pierogi ruskie), and meat (pierogi miesem). Once the type is decided, The filling is placed in the middle, and the dough folded over to form a half circle or rounded triangle shape. The edges are pressed together to seal the pierogi, so that the filling stays inside during the cooking process. The pierogi are cooked in boiling water until they float on the surface ( History of Polish Pierogi ). The dough is the most important step, even though this part is crucial, it decides whether or not the pierogi survives through cooking. Pierogies also come in sweet varieties along with savory. The author uses social class, gender, and racial differences within the graphic novel to effect the reality of occurring events such as the Iranian revolution during 1979. Changing Native American Stereotypes in the Film, Dances with Wolves The film Dances with Wolves, that was written by Michael Blake and directed by Kevin Costner, helps to shift our perspective of Native Americans from one of stereotypical distaste, to one of support and respect. According to an anonymous critic on www.eFilmcritic.com This is one of the few westerns that devotes its time to looking at the plight of the American Indians (particularly the Sioux), who were thought by some as even more subhuman than blacks during the 1800 s (and even during parts of the 1900 s). The Sioux are very perplexed by John. He comes to the army fort and he doesn t seem to be afraid of them like everyone else is. They are not just going to go out and kill him. He didn t do anything to harm or threaten their lifestyle, so why should they bother him. They don t know how to react to him. Every time they make an appearance to him, he seems friendly and acts like he wants to get to know them. Now here is a prime instance of how the Sioux do not fit into the typical view of Indians. The typical view is that Native Americans don t care about other people and they just go around killing everyone for the fun of it. This is totally opposite of that. In the film, the Sioux make numerous appearances to John without being threatening at all. They just want to try and get to know him and see what he is there for. According to people from our my English Composition class there are a lot of scenes in Dances with Wolves that illustrate the view of Indians as brutal savages. Some of these include: beating people on the head with a mace, shooting of dog, wagon train remains, driver of the mule train killed, yanking captive lady off the horse, and killing of peasant. As a maverick literary critic, Paglia resists easy categorization. She rejects certain assumptions of contemporary criticism which substitutes political criteria for esthetic values. (It is easier to devise a quota system for the canon and its priesthood than to worship together). But her appreciation of Spenser is based upon a central tenant of deconstructionism: suspicion of the text. Paglia asserts that The Faerie Queene is didactic but also self pleasuring (190). Spenser does not say what he means, for imagination can overwhelm moral intention (191). In other words, the visual fireworks generated by the poet contradict his intended message, that of showing us how to achieve holiness in the midst of a perverse world. The fight against evil stimulates rather than quenches the desires of the flesh. A serious charge indeed. No less surprising is Paglia s comparison of Spenser with Chaucer who opposes extremism in all things (172). The difference in the content of programs watched by males and females during adolescence and early adulthood is yet to be explored. • 30. The Great Gatsby Nick Carraway Narrator Some would argue the most vital character of the story is the protagonist, however many more would say it is the narrator. The narrator describes what his happening in the story, and we see every moment through their eyes. But alas, not all narrators can be trusted. Especially in a time like when The Great Gatsby, by F. Scott Fitzgerald, was written. The narrator for this book is Nick Carraway, who grew up with his well off family in Chicago and then went to Yale. Throughout the book, he reveals attributes about him that make him seem like a reliable narrator, however he may very not be. With the first few paragraphs of the novel, Fitzgerald starts to build a narrator that readers feel they can really trust. For example, Nick begins the book quoting the advice he received from his father remember that all the people in this world haven t had all the advantages that you ve had (Fitzgerald 1). Then he goes on to state that he usually tries to reserve his judgements. One after another, he stresses that he is not judgemental. Nick also has a secondary role, which means that he is the one observing most situations rather than taking part in them. Fitzgerald makes him ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... At the beginning of the book, he stresses to the readers that he is a trustworthy character. However, the favoritism he gives certain characters makes him seem unreliable. First of all, he is extremely sympathetic to Gatsby. He barely interacted with the rest of the characters in the book, but for some reason chooses to value Gatsby above all of them. On page 44 he says to Gatsby They re a rotten crowd...you re worth the whole damn bunch put together . It s hard to notice the favoritism he makes with the amount of unreadable characters, but it does over romanticize the root of the story. Utilitarianism in Government In its political philosophy utilitarianism provides an alternative to theories of natural law and the social contract by basing the authority of government and the sanctity of individual rights upon their utility, or measure of happiness gained. As an egalitarian doctrine, where everyone s happiness counts equally, the rational, relatively straightforward nature of utilitarianismoffers an attractive model for democratic government. It offers practical methods for deciding the morally right course of action ...an action is right as it tends to promote happiness, wrong as it tends to diminish it, for the party whose interests are in question (Bentham, 1780). One major point of contention, however, is that it is often difficult, if not impossible, to measure and compare the values of certain benefits and costs. How does one assign value to human life, or time, or artistic pleasures such as literature and music? Mill s response was to introduce variables to pleasure. While Bentham concentrated on quantity (the pleasure s duration, intensity, etc), Mill stressed quality. Adding the feature of quality to pleasure differentiates higher , intellectual pleasures from common, physical ones. He argues in his famous quote It is better to be a human being dissatisfied than a pig satisfied; better to be Socrates dissatisfied than a fool satisfied. And if the fool, or the pig, are of a different opinion, it is only because they only know their own side of the question . This reasoning is not very satisfactory if we consider how subjective (and elitist) it can be. Who is to determine which activities are more high brow or low brow, and what makes a competent judge? Mill states it should be person who has experience of the activities in question, but a key aspect of utilitarianism it the requirement of making these judgements impartially and impersonally. With the diversity of this world it is highly unlikely that the tastes and preferences will all align in accord. Even if we attempt to make our decisions based on how others would be affected, it is impossible for us to know or measure the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Those are the question raised in Brett Gaylor s documentary RiP: A Remix Manifesto, raises alarms for those who think copyright holders have become too aggressive about protecting their intellectual property. The documentary highlights the popular music artist known as Girl Talk. Girl Talk consists of one man named Gregg Gillis and he takes parts from different songs (usually popular ones) and creates new music of his own. He doesn t use any of his own materials at all. A lot of people consider his work stealing and what is known as Copyright infringement; even though he changes the music so much, you can t even tell what all of the songs he uses are. Girl Talk is known as a mash up artist, and according to the documentary, mash up artists have stirred up quite a controversy with both the Copyright Company and the other artists they take their material from. Copyright problems arose with the advent of the free availability of information on the Internet. It was easy for people to steal music, movies and images from the internet and use them to create their own mash up piece. Prior to the internet copyrighting actually encouraged creativity. • 33. Gender Roles In STEM Over the course of history, advances made by women in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) have been overshadowed and downplayed due to a male dominant culture in these fields. The primary reason for these fields being dominated by males is the way women have been forced into gender roles over the course of history. Women with ambition to build, create, and discover have been discouraged from following their passions and are instead told to focus on raising their children. This discrimination has hurt the overall progress in scientific communities as it has limited women in the resources available to them and has forced them to work in the shadows. Yet there has still been great progress in STEM made by women. Over the past ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Many women end up surrounded by male peers with no one to relate to in their coursework. Women may find themselves isolated in their classes and unable to find academic organizations on campus that support women majoring in STEM. Being unrepresented in STEM academia and having a limited amount of peers to relate to leads to discouragement. Women also face harsher criticism due to male bias within the STEM communities. This criticism comes not only from their male peers, but from administrative staff at institutions as well. One study shows that many woman applying for STEM related scholarships have had to be up to 2.5 times more productive than men to be considered equally competent (Barres, 386). This is again due to the gender stereotypes that have become imbedded within society. This bias also means women pursuing STEM degrees are put at a disadvantage in regards to selective processes for internships and academic clubs. By constantly having to prove themselves and repeatedly being discouraged by their environment, women studying STEM have a much harder time than men staying motivated in their courses. This of course leads to lower grades and a greater likelihood of dropping out of their programs. It is also safe to assume that creating an environment that causes women to constantly doubt themselves will have a negative impact on their academic performance; any student male or female must believe in themselves to be able to ...
