Holding Up The Universe Summary
HOLDING UP THE UNIVERSE by:JENNIFER NIVEN
The story that I choose to read was Holding Up The Universe by Jennifer Niven. I originally
choose to read this book because it s cover looked very interesting to me. The title hooked me
and reading the book has been nothing but interesting. The book was about to teenagers whose
worlds were completely different but were both the exact opposite of ideal. They were both
struggling through hard times until they found each other. I would recommend other people my
age to read this book because it is so inspirational and because once you start reading it it is hard to
put it down. It keeps you interested and helps you learn how to get through some hard times.
The setting of Holding Up the Universe ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In today s world it means a lot to a lot of people because they feel as though they are being heard.
Understood. The book goes through a story that happens in everyday life so very often. Holding
Up the Universe goes through many conflicts, the development of characters, immense use of
different author s craft, and a setting that is unreplicatable. The theme throughout Holding Up the
Universe stands strong in teaching that you must always stand up for who you are and what you
stand for no matter who hates against you. You should make decisions that will result in your
happiness and you will get out of life what you have given it. This is a strong message to hold
onto for the young generation of today. We still have massive amounts of peer pressure that try to
get a person to think that it is better to go with the flow instead of standing up for who you are.
Can Holding Up the Universe inspire teenagers to be themselves and defy going with the

Watching Milo Murphy s Law
This week I began to watch Milo Murphy s law. As a true Phineas and Ferb fan, I really enjoyed it,
since there are many jokes and easter eggs hidden in Milo Murphy that date back to Phineas and
Ferb. But, just three episodes in, I began to devise a theory. Maybe it s too early in the show to tell,
but I have a pretty bold theory, and I m prepared to back it up.
My theory: Melissa Chase is Candace s Sister
At first glance, this theory seems impossible. So rather than try to explain my theory all at once, I ll
explain the answers to different arguments against this theory.
Agrument 0: How do we even know the two shows are in the same universe?
Well on Huffington Post, Dan Povenmire, one of the creators of Phineas and Ferb, has been ... Show

Flynn is her maiden name. She was married to someone with the last name Chase, although she
did not change her last name (which is not uncommon). During her marriage, she had three
children, Candace, Mellissa, and Phineas. Once she got divorced, she remarried to Lawrence
Fletcher, who was the father of Ferb. The reason we never see Mellissa with her family, is that
Linda and her first husband have worked out and agreement to allow Mellissa to visit with her
father during the summer. But if this is true, how come Mellissa s last name is Chase, and not
Flynn? I think she goes by Chase, because she doesn t want to be immediately associated with
Phineas and Ferb. We ve already seen throughout the Phineas and Ferb series that Phineas and
Ferb are known all throughout town as the coolest kids ever. I think Melissa uses her former last
name as a way to not be immediately associated as just Phineas and Ferb s older sister.
Argument 2: Why would there be any reason to assume that the two are sisters?
Well, if you look at their pictures, you ll see what I mean.
candace_promotional_image_3melissa
First of all, they have a very similar red shade of hair. While this doesn t seem to be very
compelling evidence, have you ever noticed that both Phineas and his mom are readheads too?

Furthermore, have you ever noticed how few redheads are in the Milo Murphy, and Phineas and
Ferb series?

Pyramid Discipleship Essay
Pyramid Discipleship Discipleship in a mega church
One of the hardest things to do when you are in a mega church is creating a community of
genuine discipleship and not just a Sunday Church . It can seem like a giant task to take on when
looked at head first because creating personal relationships with a thousand or more people is a
lot of relationships, but there are ways to do it, and following the mold of pyramid discipleship can
be very effective.
So what is it?
Pyramid discipleship is a system set up in a way to where one person will only take on 5 to 10 (at
the very most) people at a time to disciple. And as they continue in their discipling there will be
others above them to disciple them as they go. When you actually look at this inside of the
church it becomes clearer and easier to understand. At the top of the pyramid would be the senior
pastor, a maybe some of the elders or other staff members. Moving down the pyramid would be
the staff that would oversee the discipleship program. Weather this be one or two people, this is
where the discipleship starts. These leaders will be discipled by the elders or senior pastor, this is
including not only questions about the program but also walking with them through their spiritual
life, and life in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
With what kind of hearts? Part of what we are giving to our leaders is the ongoing discipleship
they will have. This is the same thing our leaders are giving to their disciples. Along with that
we will hold different fellowship nights to give our leaders a night of rest and fun as they can
come and eat and talk to the other leaders. This will also be available for the leaders to hold for
their own groups. We want true, genuine, Christ like hearts of love for this to be done at all. If it
does not stem from love, then it is nothing we want to promote. From the beginning we will push
the idea of having a loving heart and always leading from that same

Why People Should Not Wear Seat Belts
In the state of Connecticut, drivers and front seat passengers must wear safety seat belts.
Passengers who sit in the rear must be restrained by an appropriate seat belt system. The law
doesn t require it but it should. People in the rear must be required to wear safety restraints.
Obviously, if anyone fails to not wear a seat beltwill be charged a $92 dollar fine or even worse
death. It is a simple fact that wearing your seat belt can reduce your risk of dying in a car crash. I
urge everyone to permanently use seat belts and the correct child restraints whenever people are
drivingor riding in any automobile. Passengers in the rear are as much vulnerable than those in the
front. Although, it may seem that they won t get direct impact when

Electronic Medical Record ( Emr )
HIS, also known as healthcare information system is a broad system used in healthcare settings.
Depending on the needs of the facility, determines the complexity of the system. This can range
from basic needs such as billing to the more complex which encompasses several systems that help
manage every service available to the patient. Learning to use and integrate this into the nursing
field is crucial to effectively care for and manage patients. In 2004, the Office of the National
Coordinator (ONC) was established. This merged healthcare and IT programing in the United
States. In 2008, ONC decided on terms used to identify patient s records. Within the clinical
information system, there are three different types of patient records being... Show more content on

If a HIE is not present, the EMRs are not able to communicate with other facilities EMRs causing
duplicate information on patient that isn t always correct. A situation where this is common is
when a patient has surgery and then goes to another facility for complications due to the surgery,
the patients knowledge doesn t always coincide with the actual events that took place. While
EHRs have several benefits, they still come at a cost to the provider and the consumer. It wasn t
until 2009 when the Health Information Technology for Economics and Clinical Health
(HITECH) Act, signed the largest US initiative to date. This enticed the widespread of use of
EHRs as a part of the stimulus package(4). Electronic health records have propelled IT into the
next generation of healthcare. Not only is everything at the providers fingertips, it allows
autonomy for the patient. Our world is becoming very digital, from purchasing concert tickets, to
applying for college, this is done at the click of a fingertip. Yet healthcare has aspects that are still
stuck in the paper documentation era. From receive paper prescriptions from their doctors to filling
out patient history every time someone sees a different physician, there is still work to be done to
seamlessly transition to a digital platform. According to Collum and Menachemi, EHRs are defined
as a longitudinal electronic record of patient health information generated by one or more
encounters in

Has Pos-Fordism Replaced Fordism in Capitalist Society
The beginning of the 20th century when Henry Ford first time put his genius idea of dividing
works into separate parts by using assemble line into practice was marked as the start of massive
production. It is also the debut for Taylorism in the massive production area. After that such
method of massive standard production was named as Foedism. Based on the scientific
management theory that comes from Taylorism, the manufacturing area began to be dominated by
Fordism. However, since the 1960s when a series of new technologies appeared, manufacturing did
not have to be formed in a fixed method. A more flexible production method, which was named as
Post Fordism turned up. From then on a controversy appears between two groups of... Show more

Since it is such a unusual idea to the dominant opinions, theories of post Fordism have suffered
some strong criticism. Pollert(1988), one who is opposed to the opinion that Taylorism and
Fordism have been replaced by post Fordism , argues that theories of flexibility are too simple to
believe and at times incorrect. She says that the comments, which indicate the Fordism once
dominated the production method are incorrect. She otherwise, points out that the flexibility to
produce specialized products are nothing new and the key of Japanese business success is cheap,
well designed and reliable products rather than a small amount of specialized products. Thus,
flexible specialization and post Fordism was not that successful. To the issue about relationships
between flexibility and skill levels, she maintains a different view that flexibility at times also leads
to some opposite effects. In addition, Pollert(1988) also worried about introducing new technology
or new management proposals into practices, since it may cause conflicts between workers and
management. Apart from Pollert, Stephen Wood(1989) also questions whether the flexibility has
led to a greater requirement of skills. And he doubts that the people who support the post Fordism
theories exaggerate their cases. Just as Hall(1988) claims that there is still no evidence that

The Concept Of Compassion By Using Walker And Avant s (...
The concept compassion is heart felt and used by many to cover a subjective feeling.
Compassion is experienced by people across the world in healthcare and in many aspects of life.
It is well known in many disciplines, and has been deemed a quality in which nurses possess in
their profession. The idea is one that is familiarized by many, but is not clearly defined in nursing
education or practice but has been the foundation regarding the high quality of care nurses are
thought to contribute to the medical world. The purpose of this concept analysis is to understand
the experience of compassion. By using Walker and Avant s (2011) eight step guideline for
concept analysis on compassion, this analysis will provide examples and definitions resulting in
an explanation of the importance of the concept related to nursing practice. To gain a better
overview of the concept compassion, an extensive search using EBSCOhost Academic Search
Elite online database was used. The Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature
(CINAHL), Medline, PubMed, and Cochrane Library databases were searched using compassion,
empathy, sympathy, and compassion analysis. A literature review was conducted in nursing,
medicine, sociology, psychology, ethics, and religion to help define compassion for this concept
analysis. In this concept analysis, compassion will be defined using ideas from many historical
views and taking the key concepts from an array of disciplines as well as expanding on the

Letter To Zeitoun
As a student of Mills High School, I am writing you this letter in hopes that you will consider my
position on the continued authorization of Zeitoun being read at Mills. In the best interest of the
student body of Mills, I firmly believe that Zeitoun should continue as summer reading due to the
numerous positive effects it can have on students.
Despite the now verified illegal actions of the main character, Abdulrahman Zeitoun, after the
book s publication, Zeitoun still serves its original purpose of illustrating discrimination towards
Muslims in order to educate Americans of the prevalence of Islamophobia in a post 9/11 society.
Zeitoun, as a Syrian American, and his wife Kathy, a converted Muslim, have both endured the
negative consequences of Islamophobia. However, days after Hurricane Katrina, Zeitoun s heroic
actions such as navigating the flood waters in order to rescue others, were disregarded when he
and his friends were arrested on the fictitious charge of looting and the assumption of a connection
to radical Islamic groups due to the common stereotype of all Muslims being radicals. This ... Show

Upon discovering the indictment of Zeitoun, students, like I have, begin to develop caution in
reading text that only shows one point of view. Instead of aimlessly reading bodies of text, students
learn to question the integrity of the piece and keep an open mind by having to consider another
point of view or other factors that may affect the writing. Additionally, Eggers employs many
rhetorical strategies to accomplish his purpose, thus allowing students to further practice analyzing
and understanding the use rhetorical strategies in achieving a purpose. These skills can then be put
into use through rhetorical analysis or argumentative essays, such as in the AP English Language

Case Study Of KFC In South Africa
With the development of business world, people became busy and the
importance of time has increased for them. Today, people want to save their as
much time as possible and most of people don t have enough time to cook food
so they usually prefer eating fast food so fast food sector focus on high volume ,
low cost and high speed product. With this high demand of fast foods, there
are lots of different brands and restaurants that are selling fast foods and their
numbers are increasing day by day. The fast food companies are serving in over 100 countries and

scandal that workers caught while they were washing row chicken on the

does not have bright history about food safety and business ethic. A brand of the popular fast food
outlet, KFC in Braamfontein, south Africa is struggling with a
new scandal that the KFC workers caught when they are washing row chicken
on the ground. This time, the problem looks like more serious than the other
scandals. Because, this problem is directly about the company, not about its
supplier and also, there are evidences about the issue of KFC which are video and
some photos. These video and photos are shared on social media websites such

With this big scandal, the reputation of KFC took a knock and this scandal

Powerful Women In Ancient Greece
I realized how powerful women are on my 10th birthday. After an eventful day that consisted of
everlasting hugs and conventional speeches about how much I had grown during the past ten
years, my grandfather and I found ourselves sitting outside on the balcony alone, capturing the
infinite darkness of the woods and hearing the humming sounds of the wind chimes. As if the age
of ten had suddenly turned me into an adult, my grandfather began to give me advice on women:
Women love diamonds , women love flowers , women will fall in love with you if you grow up
to be a man with an abundance of money . Above all, however, he emphasized one idea: he told me
that the ideal womanto marry is one who is less than me less intelligent than me, less... Show more

If they left the house they were to be accompanied (97). Just like many other early civilizations,
ancient Greece portrayed women as insignificant individuals who were enslaved to their own
homes living life without the opportunity to make their own choices or being able to leave their
homes without being accompanied. As time went by, one would expect that the slavish social
conditions that women experienced during early civilizations would change, but that was not the
case. Hundreds of years later during the age of the Renaissance in Europe, which was portrayed
as an age of recovery and the birthplace of the modern world (Spielgovel 378), women s role of
society remained bleak. In an era where everything seemed to be progressing, women were still
expected to remain at home, under the supervision of their father or husband and that most wives

Jaws Response Paper. Throughout Steven Spielberg’S Jaws
Jaws Response Paper Throughout Steven Spielberg s Jaws social class and wealth play a large
role in character development as well as story progression. As seen from the beginning, the town
of Amity is the hotspot for vacationers and in most cases, those of higher economic status. A
stark difference can be seen between the status of islanders (those who live in Amity) versus
those who only come to vacation, such as between Sheriff Brody and Dr. Hooper. Money and
stature are also key throughout the film as a motivator for several of the film s characters,
specifically Mayor Larry Vaughn, Quint and Dr. Hooper to drive their major decisions. In the very
beginning of the film we are shown a group of teenagers having a bonfire on the beach and... Show

In contrast to the first incident the townspeople are now immediately swarming over the attack
and searching for answers. Mrs. Kinter, in her desperation for justice, even goes as far as
blaming Brody (again a non islander) for her son s death rather than Mayor Vaughn who had
been the real culprit behind keeping the beaches open. She also enables two more examples of
money and status driven character development by offering a cash reward to anyone that can
catch and kill the shark that attacked her son. The character most obviously driven by financial
gain is the fisherman Quint who at the town meeting immediately following the attack on Alex
Kintner explains that he will bring in the shark for $10,000 instead of the $3,000 offered by Mrs.
Kintner. Just as Mayor Vaughn seeks to capitalize on the summertime and tourists, Quint is
interested in his own financial gain rather than the safety and wellbeing of the town. Dr. Hooper,
as Mayor Vaughn points out, is also likely motivated by money and stature related to finding and
killing the monstrous shark. While trying to explain how big and dangerous the shark really is,
Mayor Vaughn criticizes Hooper for only wanting to get fame and fortune by having his name in a
National Geographic magazine. Although he insists that he is strictly interested in the science
behind the beast and protecting the people of Amity the act of discovery often can harbor monetary
and status related gain. As a researcher, Hooper fully

What Are The Jurors In 12 Angry Men
Twelve Angry Men is a very interesting film with the debate of twelve jurors in the jury room.
They debated about a teenage boy who has just been tried for the murder of his father. The case
is if all jurors vote guilty, the boy will die and if all jurors vote not guilty, the boy will be free. They
started to find their chairs in the juryroom and they started to vote. The result was very funny when
eleven jurors voted guilty and only one against, not guilty. Juror number 8 was the only one against
them. He put more thought into the case than any of the other jurors. He tried to do his best even
in the face of seemingly impossible odds.

I like juror number 8 because if he votes guilty like everybody in the jury room a boy is dead, but
he votes not guilty and the result is changed. Juror number 8 was the only one stand up to against
another and defends a murderer when they had 11 ballot votes that is guilty and convicted to die.
First thing he convinces other jurors in the film we could see the murder weapon. Some people

victim, to see if he could have gotten to the door in time to see the murderer fleeing. By that detail
he makes juror 9 change his mind.
Juror 9 is a wise old man with his great life experience. he has quite a unique way of looking at
the case. And I liked juror 9 because he is an elderly juror and the second person who changed his
mind, when he heard another juror s thought. Juror 9 is supporting with his experience life when

Mega Cities And World Cities
Mega Cities and World Cities have key differences that distinguish them, allowing us to identify
what makes them unique, and the role they play in society, culturally and on the world stage.
Where Mega Cities are purely defined by the population that lives within them, only cities that have
a global and national significance qualify as a World City. World Cities are cities that are major
centres of finance, politics, trade and culturethat extend globally well beyond their local region.
World Cities are the centre for the flow of money to and from their local regions into the global
community. They attract the headquarters for multi national companies. They also host national

This can have its downsides. In the developing countries where growth has been rapid,
overurbanisation can occur where not enough jobs are provided for the population living in the city,
and infrastructure is inadequate.
Manila is the only mega city in the Philippines and is located in the southwest of the island of
Luzon on an isthmus bounded by Manila Bay. Its origins go back to the 16th century when it was a
trading post to China and Vietnam. It fits the scenario of being the major urban growth area for the
country.
Los Angles was founded in 1781, and grew rapidly with a strong economic base from farming and
oil. More recently, tourism, logistics and the movie industry have become very important which
increases the flow of capital through Los Angeles.
Population
The United Nation s criteria for Mega Cities is for cities with a population of over 10 million
people. Generally, Mega Cities have a high population density, that are well above smaller cities.
Manila s population in the 2015 census was 12.8 million people. Manila has a very strong
population growth rate which is expected to continue until 2050 and is responsible for more than
50% of the urban growth in the cities in the Philippines.

concerning. It has a density of 71,000 people per square kilometre in the CBD and an overall

Jack Warner Scandal Essay
The second individual that was a major player of this scandal was Jack Warner, the former VP of
CONCACAF. Warner was charged for the same crimes as Blazer that included wire fraud,
racketeering, and money laundering. However, his scheming was on a much larger scale. Not only
was he involved with Blazer during their time at CONCACAF, Warner was also involved in his
own bribery dealings, black market transactions, fraudmismanagement, and misuse of funds.
Warner s charges extend all the back into the 1980 s, however his more impactful charges came
during the 2000 s. He was involved on two different occasions of selling World Cup tickets
valued at a premium within the Black Market, in which he made $350,000 during the 2002 and

How To Write A Narrative Essay About My Identity
As an Iranian American, my identity comes with plenty of downsides. The severity of these

I had been unable to accomplish this. Whenever I had free time, I would turn on The Food

Nothing. As months went by, my confidence began to diminish. I was about to lost all hope
when I stumbled upon the recipe in an unexpected environment. Left. LEFT! Paddle faster, I
shouted, trying to instruct our raft team to avoid rocks as we soared down the white rapids. We
were flying down waterfalls, avoiding other rafts, and trying to reach our destination, where we
would feast on cold cuts. Our raft was rocketing around a turnabout when it suddenly crashed and
lodged itself between two massive boulders. We were stuck. Our guide radioed in for help as we all

Avon s Investments Fall Short by Hannah Karp, Wall Street Journal, December 8, 2011
QUESTIONS:
1: Briefly describe the main points of the article.
The article highlights Avon ProductsInc. s financial and regulatory woes.
Avon s wide and persistent gap between net income and free cash flows have been highlighted as
the main reason for the company s problems. The gap indicates that the company s investments aren
t paying off very well and that its net income doesn t fully reflect depreciation and other costs of
those investments.
Other problems like computerized supply management system in Latin America, Avon s direct

Due to the company s reliance on its direct selling business model, earning potential and
satisfaction of its representatives and maintaining its business model are essential for the company
s success in global markets Thus, I would treat every market with a separate strategy and while
keeping the direct selling model as the core strategy I would capitalize on the local market s
requirements.
For example, in India if we focus on empowering the homemakers as business women from the
comforts of their home we can really work on the people s psyche.
Example 2: Secondly, I would revitalize and streamline the company s product lineup and make
product introductions more consistent with market and consumer needs. I would ensure to
introduce new products in every season to generate excitement and attract consumer attention.
To ensure growth I would look at some inorganic growth mechanisms such as mergers and
acquisitions. I would look to acquire local profit making beauty product companies in emerging
markets that would fit in with Avon s business synergies and help the company recreate its brand
and position in the world market.
5: After this article was published in December 2011, what changes has Avon implemented?
After this article was published in December 2011, Avon indicated that a new management was
needed to rejuvenate itself amid slowing sales. It was announced that Andrea Jung, who had headed

Department stores carried a broad range of merchandise categories and, in that sense were
comparable to
North American department store operations of the 1960s and early 1970s, before the development
of “category killer” specialty stores and price clubs. Each store or chain operated
within a narrow range of price points, with some very noticeable price point differences across
chains. Retail margins were in the range of 10% to 15%, with high price point stores taking even
higher margins. Department stores and supermarkets usually bought directly from manufacturers.
Wholesalers sold to a range of smaller sized stores in both the larger and smaller urban areas.
They generally bought at the same price as the large direct accounts, and worked on margins of
3% to 5% of their selling price. It should be noted that there was not always a clear distinction
between retail and wholesale, in that some retailers acted as a wholesaler for some lines, and some
wholesalers sold at retail as well. Van dealers sold to downscale corner variety stores and small
market stalls. They sold in very small quantities (e.g. three to six pieces) and ex truck and on a
cash basis.
In 1989, approximately 65% of Johnson Johnson sales were direct to retailers, 15% to

Smallpox Smallpox is a highly contagious virus that has no known cure. Variola, is the name of

Comparing Confucius And Siddhartha Gautama
Whether rich or poor, leaders have the power to change the world as long as they have the passion
to do so. Confucius and Siddhartha Gautama were both influential guiders whose ideas contrasted
and overlapped. They transformed and modified the way certain people live and prospect things.
Confucius s train of thoughts were necessary to end the boundless hostility and warfare around
him, while the Buddha sought enlightenment and the elimination of suffering.
Confucius s ideology included the belief that people behave exceptionally because it s in their
spirit to do so. Incredibly, with the cruel, bloody wars surrounding him, he was able to have this set
of mind. He desperately looked for ways to bring structure to deal with those devastating times.
Education and intelligence bring people together and he believed that everyone should have the
opportunity to learn. From then on, a person s position in the social hierarchy hinged on their
education, rather than their birth. Being raised in a violent society, he sought peace and
enlightenment. His empowering thoughts punched brutal wars right out of the way. While
Confucius was raised in struggling times, the Buddha had a great life ahead of him as someone not

The Role Of Centralized Policies On The State Capacities
This part explains the centralized policies with focus on the state capacities, which is the vital
factor of developmental states model, and emphasizes on implications of the centralization for
resource rich developmental states. The initial stage of the extractive industry demands the
centralization in which the governmentexerts the strong state capacities, such as abilities to
autonomously have its policyownership (e.g. design and implement industrial policies), to
efficiently mobilize resources and to rationally allocate revenues from the resources to more
productive sectors in a given society (Arellano Yanguas and MejГa Acosta, 2014). Such a state led
development often results from political leadership based on a strong ideology called
developmentalism and requires the trained and efficient bureaucracy to devise national
development schemes and implement relevant legal frameworks (Reinert, 2010).
In addition to the capacities of setting up development plans, the successful development in
resource based economy depends on their ability to save all or part of the revenues from the
extractive industries (Lewin, 2011). Since the non renewable resources are destined to be depleted
in the future, the mineral wealth is limited, and it means the state should save the revenues as much
as possible to prepare for the future depletion (Lange and Wright, 2002). Moreover, the natural
resources tend to have volatile prices, so the countries need to stabilize the income, for

Computer Hacking Is The Scale Of The Problem Essay
Computer hacking has been becoming more and more of a threat in recent years and is being
brought to the public eye more often. Large and small corporations alike, as well as individuals
are at risk of losing personal information to hackers, opening up doors to cyber attacks and theft.
Statistics show that half of American adults have been hacked this year alone (Pagliery). Security
experts and law enforcement say that hackers are actively scanning merchants networks for ways to
gain remote access to their systems. The Department of homeland Security and Secret service
recently, estimated that more than 1,000 businesses in the United States had been infected with
malware programmed to siphon payment card details from cash registers. It is believed that many
of these companies had no idea they were breached and sharing the information of thousands of
customer s credit cardinformation. A main reason for concern with cybercrime is the scale of the
problem. If it were a series of on off events people might be less concerned with it however, it is an
ongoing problem.
Just a few days ago for example, hackers broke into the debit and credit card payment networks
of two of the nation s most popular food chains: Albertson s and SuperValu. Impacted by this
breach are all of the stores related to these chains including: Acme, Jewel Osco, Shaw s, and Star
Markets, as well as Cub Foods, Hornbacher s, Shop N Save, and Shoppers Food and Pharmacy

The Growth of George Eliot s Silas Marner Essay
The Growth of Silas Marner
Silas Marner is introduced as a pallid young man, with prominent, short sighted brown eyes who
led a quiet life in the small country community, Lantern Yard. He is a skilled hand loom weaver
of exemplary life and ardent faith ; His work, friends and faith have a huge part in his life, making
him an open and honest person. Silas certainly possesses a flawed character, which we see quite
clearly in his dealings with others. From the money he made as a weaver, he only kept a small part

sect he belonged to.

Silas comes to the rural village community of Raveloe after his being mistreated by the people he
trusted in Lantern Yard and expelled from his church. He arouses the villagers suspicions and
fears by inviting no comer to step across his door sill . The villagers old fashioned, superstitious
beliefs have not yet been changed by new ideas and inventions. They treat him as an outsider
because they do not know anything about where he came from or about his past. Their unfriendly,
indifferent behaviour is also due to Silas own misunderstood behaviour towards them.
After helping Sally Oates, a woman who had the same illness that Silas own mother had, by
making a potion from herbs that cured her, he refused to help all the other people who turned to
him and believed he was a medicine man. Silas did not act like that out of selfishness. He could

truthfully told them that he did not know much about herbs and did not want to hurt them by
making a mistake or giving them the wrong herb which could be just as deadly as it could be

isolation and utter loneliness, not communicating with any

A Sphere Poem
In his 2006 collection, District and Circle , Seamus Heaney responds to the ever changing and
developing world around him. To do so he often relies upon the exploration of the past, memory,
and personal identity through the use of language. In the second poem of District and Circle , A
Shiver , Seamus Heaney is dependent upon these concepts to construct a thematically rich poem.
Heaney s A Shiver utilises language to explore the themes of the past, memory, and personal
identity. The Petrarchan sonnetdescribes the action of wielding a tool: the energy that is associated
with it, as well as an understanding of the destructive power that it wields: the way you had to stand
to swing the sledge . By using a Petrarchan sonnet Heaney introduces the concept of the past within
his poetry, due to the historical context of the Renaissance style of writing. The description of the
tool, in past tense and therefore illuminating Heaney s fascination of the past, ultimately leads to a
metaphor in regards to what occurs when strength, and therefore power, falls into the wrong hands.
The tool that is used within A Shiver to demonstrate this power is a sledgehammer most commonly
used by labourers as a way to demolish material items and it is implied that Heaney himself has
operated the sledgehammer and is, almost, frightened by its power. This can then be contributed to
the overall metaphor of misused power. This metaphor also demonstrates Heaney s personal
narrative voice within

This study represents a parallel to the behavior found in incarcerated humans. Jails cause the
same psychological side effects as prisons, to a smaller degree, in the effects of being en caged,
however, the overall standard of living in jails is much higher. There is a decent relationship
between the guards and the jailers. The jailers are allowed to interact with the same people on
their block between lockdown times. Lock down is when the jailers are confined to their cells,
usually at night and for a short while in the day, during a change of shift. This method allows
inmates to play cards, watch TV together and at very least walk around something else besides
their cell. The prison system, however, usually remains in lockdown all the time, although they
can speak to each other, they usually can t see each other without a mirror. Observing these two
methods, and what little problems there are in jails as opposed to prisons leads me to believe
that if you treat a human being like a human being they will act like a human being. If you lock
them in a cage all day they may as well act like an animal. (Prison Activist Resource Center, 1 3)
People sometimes argue this case stating that the offenses committed by jailers are less serious
than by prisoners and that prisons are more hostile because they house the more serious offenders.
These people forget that jails hold people before they are

side to him, so too might his work. Carroll made this statement in a letter to an American friend,I

we mean to express when we use them; so a whole book ought to mean a great deal more than the

Job Attitude Is defined as the way an individual behaves and perceives things and the output he
delivers in the job he/she is assigned. This affects his/her production which ultimately determines
the organization s success (Brooke, Russell, Price, 1988). According to the success of an individual,
attitude is directly proportional to his/her effectiveness. The attitude and perception employees
approach their work with is the same determinant of their maximum output. Attitude can also be
manipulated by the belief, self values, and attachment towards the specified task assigned (Brooke,

The Importance Of Owning Property With Great Historic And...
Many questions arise regarding the decision of owning property with great historic and economic
value. In the artistic world of museums, there has always been a craving to own the most valuable
antiquities created by human kind. The biggest battle of antiquities relies on the Elgin Marbles,
which were once part of the Parthenon, a magnificent creation of Athenians to worship Athena The
Goddess of War (British Museumweb npg). This temple stands atop the Acropolis, on the site of
another lost temple to Athens patron goddess. Little is known about this first structure except that
it was still under construction in 480 B.C. when Persian forces sacked the city and demolished the
Acropolis. The Parthenon is very famous, and tourists from all over the world visit this temple to
contemplate the talent of past generations. In present times, we have Greece, which claims that the
Elgin Marblesshould be repatriated; on the other hand we have Britain, which currently possesses
the Elgin Marbles displayed in the British Museum. The British Museum acquired these sculptures
thanks to Lord Elgin, a British ambassador to the Ottoman Empire. Lord Elgin was passionate
about the ancient Greek art. Between 1801 1805 he removed about half of the remaining sculptures
back to Britain (BM web npg). This big dispute has garnered extensive media attention. Not all of
the sculptures from the Parthenon are in the British Museum, even though a big portion of them
are. You can also find

Frank Sinatra Research Papers
Frank Sinatra is an American icon who is still touching the hearts and souls through his music and
movies. Frank Sinatra, an American popular singer and actor, was one of the top entertainers of
the 20th century. Over a 50 year span, staring in 1,500 songs and started in almost 60 different
movies made him recognized. In 1935, Sinatra quit his newspaper job to pursue a career as a
singer after attending a Bing Crosbyconcert. (Monica Garving, pg. 1 of 4) Frank joined a group
called the Hoboken Four, who won first place, as a quartet group on a radio station, but Frank

National Security in Foreign Policy
Foreign policy definition: a set of political goals that aims to outline how a particular state will
interact with others
Beach (2012): Foreign policy actions can be undertaken using a variety of different instruments,
ranging from adopting declarations, making speeches, negotiating treaties, giving other states
economic aid, engaging in diplomatic activity such as summits, and the use of military force
No matter which instruments are used, the primary objective of states in outlining their foreign
policies is to maximise their national security.
States can go about maximising national security through different means such as by military force,
economic prosperity and/or the general welfare of its people.
Difficult to analyse to what extent national security is a primary objective of states theories of IR
will help explain states motives and how they go about maximising state security, if it is their prime
objective at all.
This essay will analyse the concept of national security through realism (focused on military power),
liberalism (focused on cooperation through liberal internationalism) and constructivism (focused on
wider definitions of security, such as health and the environment).
A.Realism
1.Core principles of realist view of national security
For realists, the concept of national security is an effective balancing of external threats.
The realist tradition of IR theory is said to have stemmed from the work of Thomas Hobbes, where

Subject: Cost Benefit Analytical Reviews for the New Health Care Insurance Package in Arapahoe
County.
Healthcare is expensive and Americans look for the best healthcare they can possibly get. Since
consumers are always demanding for better insurance covers, employers are trying to provide the
resources that have an effective prices and not raising costs. The Human Resources department in
Arapahoe County has recently developed a new health care insurance guide in order to control the
County s rising cost for health care insurance. This project will be experienced on all County s
departments, including Clerk Recorder s Office. In this memo, I provide you with a cost benefit
analysis of this new project to change the way benefits are provided on an experimental basis.
Based on my analysis, there will be a slight positive return with Benefit cost Ratio 1.07; however,
this new project would be not smart financial decision to be applied on Clerk Recorder s Office.
Lately, a guide program for a new health care insurance package has designed by the Human
Resources department to reduce the rising cost for health care insurance in Arapahoe County. We
have been informed that this program has been designed for employees who presently get their
health insurance through the County. In contrast with the traditional health care insurance package,
this guide is provided with a choice of a

The Presence Of Vitamin C
Introduction:
The presence of Vitamin C (Ascorbic Acid) in an individual s diet is critical since humans, in fact,
does not have the ability to synthesize them ourselves. Vitamin C is essential for human health. It is
an antioxidant scavenger and it is also vital for tissue maintenance and repair. The lack of Vitamin C
in one s system can lead to numerous kinds of illnesses. For example, severe Vitamin C in a
prolonged period can lead to scurvy.
Vitamin C can be obtained from fruit, vegetables, and lab made Vitamin C tablets. The synthesis
of Vitamin C supplements in the laboratory was found to be extremely efficient in 1933. They are
now largely manufactured in laboratories and sold to the market. However, degradation of
Vitamin C occurs over time. The rate of degradation will be accelerated when exposed to air, light,
and heat. Therefore, it is essential for the manufacturers to acknowledge the rate of degradation so
they could estimate how much Vitamin C should be made and when the expiry date should be.
In this experiment a solution of Vitamin C is added to a solution containing of known excess of
iodine. At this point, the solution will turn blue black in colour and this excess amount of iodine
can then be titrated against standardized sodium thiosulphate. (^citation here) This technique is
called back titration.
The Iodine is produced by the mixture of the following reagents: KIO3,KI,and H2SO4.
KIO3+ 5KI+ 3H2SO4пѓ 3I2+ 3K2SO4+ 3H2O(1)

Their mutual love and hatred for one another, and for themselves, provides an intensely dark
comedy that exposes their inner conflicts, their racial bigotry and their low self esteem, as they
struggle to survive in a contrived culture to which neither will ever really belong.
John Fante s description of Los Angeles during the depression of gaunt faces and lost humanity is
haunting and riveting, as told through the eyes of a young man who is not altogether stable. The
smog, traffic, dust, grime and shallow lifestyles of southern California were already present in
1939, making this story relevant still today. The earthquake scene in the story is just as realistic as
it might be today, complete with military intervention and the emergence of human kindness in the
face of disaster.
Camilla, Arturo, Sammy, Vera and Hellfrick are all non entities in the bustle of L.A. culture, but all
are profoundly human in their suffering, confusion, and vices. All are battling a poor sense of self
worth and struggling to survive in an indifferent world. Arturo Bandini takes us through this story in
intimate first person, exposing us to his mood swings, his astute observations and his growth as an
author and a man.
In the Alta Loma Hotel in the Bunker Hill district of Los Angeles, writer Arturo Bandini s hotel

The Nature Of Knowledge, Reality, Existence, And Academic...
For centuries now, philosophers from countries all over the world have dedicated their lives to
the study of the nature of knowledge, reality, existence, and academic discipline. These studies
have taken them places within their field that question their own existence, the existence of
everyone and everything around them, and even what is right and wrong in the world they live
in. However, today s philosophy is somewhat different than it once was in the age of Aristotle,
Plato, and Descartes. One of the more current and controversial questions that has been pondered
by philosophers of the Twenty and Twenty First Centuries is whether or not it is possible for
artificial intelligence, such as phones, laptops, or Smart TV s, to function like a human brain
would. These days, we have the capability of signaling somebody halfway across the world or
finding out any piece of information within seconds. Our treasured pieces of technology are kept
near us at all times and it is a comfortable feeling knowing that we have them around, even when
there s no interaction with them. We treat and care about our technology as if it were a friend. And
despite the fact that technology often seems to have the ability to communicate back to us, they do
not actually think like a human would. Although artificial intelligence is able to process
information easily and quickly, it can not in fact properly interpret, therefore it will never measure
up to a human s capability of processing. It is

Descriptive Essay On Softball
Laura is a nice, shy, smart girl and she loves to play all kinds of sports like volleyball and
basketball, but her most favorite sport of all is softball. Today is Laura s first softball game she
is excited and nervous at the same time, and all day all she could think about is what if I throw
the ball the wrong way or what if I make a terrible throw or can t catch the ball when the ball was
being thrown right to her glove. Laura is also thinking about all of the good things that could
happen too like she gets the last out or she scores a homerun with the bases loaded. With all of
these emotions Laura is having a hard time concentrating at school and doesn t get a to good of
a grade on an assignment. Then when one of Laura s friends Riley walks up to her to ask Laura
what is wrong she said that the same thing was happening to her to so that made them both feel
better about everything knowing that they weren t the only ones feeling that way. When school
was over Riley went over to Laura s house so they could practice a little bit before their game and
they both practiced really well and that made them more confident and ready to play but Laura
was still nervous because she didn t want to do anything really embarrassing at their game in
Trenton. It has been an hour and Laura and Riley were off to the Trenton field to play softball.
When they finally arrived they were the first ones there because Laura s dad was one of the

the grass, specimen 4 without clothing on the grass, specimen 5 clothed partly buried, specimen 6

Gabby more specifically thought the piglet on the concrete would decompose first because it is left
in the sun. She thought the sun combined with the bugs would increase the rate of decomposition. If
a piglet was left suspended it could be placed in the shade and less bugs would reach it. Laney
thought, Yes, it might decompose slower because everything goes to the head instead of staying in
the original areas, or since everything goes to the head it might just decompose mostly in the head
and everything fall out .
Another question that we put a theory to was, Does a piglet decompose faster if it is on the grass
/dirt versus being on the cement? I, Allison, thought a piglet on the grass would decompose faster
than on the cement. Gabby thought it was more likely for decomposition to occur faster on grass
because there are more bugs in the grass. Laney also agreed the piglets on the grass would
decompose faster because bugs could reach the body faster and help with decomposition. By
remaining on the cement, bugs would not be attracted to it as

Archetypal Hero Journey
The monumental piece of non fiction work titled The Hero with a Thousand Faces, first published
in 1949 by Joseph Campbell points out an apparent monomyth of the hero through superb use of
example and literary analysis. In this book Campbell presents three main phases of the archetypal
hero; The Departure, The Initiation, and The Return. Within these three main phases there exist
numerous sub phases that describe nearly all aspects of the heros journey and its impact upon the
entire monomyth. I have chosen to analyze the amazing journeys of the heroes Herakles, and
Odysseus. Herakles (whose name can be translated as Glory of Hera ) was a first generation
descendent of the great god Zeus; a result of the offspring produced by a... Show more content on

It is interesting to note that Herakles receives little to no supernatural aide in this story, contrary
to the monomyth perhaps identifying as one of the great gods of the time. The journey s road of
trials is very evident in this myth as Herakles must perform ten (actually twelve due to
stipulations by the king) labors in order to achieve forgiveness and ultimately become immortal.
Most heroes also experience a metaphysical death in which they have to cross into the realm of
the underworld and return with knowledge or an item. Herakles does this for his twelfth and final
labor, by traveling to the underworld in order to capture the guardian of the underworld, Cerberus,
and return him once the king saw that he had completed the task. The final act that Herakles does
that fits into the monomyth archetype of the hero is his act of becoming immortal. Upon his death
funeral pyre, when the flame is lit he is risen up to Olympus and is granted the gift of immortality.
This is significant for several reasons; firstly it shows that Hera in fact did embrace him at the end
of his journey by allowing him to have immortality. Also his immortality

INTRODUCTION
Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) take the form of cylindrical carbon molecules and have untapped
properties that make them potentially useful in a wide variety of applications in nanotechnology,
electronics, optics, and other fields of materials science. They exhibit extraordinary strength and
unique electrical properties, apart from being efficient conductors of heat. Inorganic nanotubes have
also been synthesized, by researchers intrigued by this particular field.
Manufacturing a nanotube is dependent on applied quantum chemistry, specifically, orbital
hybridization. Nanotubes are composed entirely of sp2 bonds, like the ones seen in graphite. This
bonding structure, stronger than the sp3 bonds found in diamond, provides the molecules with their
unique strength. Nanotubes naturally align themselves into ropes held together by Van der Waals
forces. Under high pressure, nanotubes can merge together, trading some sp2 bonds for sp3 bonds,
thus acquiring great possibility for producing strong, unlimited length wires through high pressure
nanotube linking.
Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are allotropes of carbon with a cylindrical nanostructure. Nanotubes have
been constructed with length to diameter ratio of up to 132,000,000:1, significantly larger than for
any other material.

Body Image And Self Image
Body image refers to how the physical self is perceived. Different cultures and different periods
have different concerns and standards. In Western countries, the female body image is regarded
as good if it is attractive, thin and fit. Therefore, consumers will look for clothing that can help
them in building this image. Self image refers to the physical and psychological perception that
one has of oneself. One can evaluate one s self image through feedback from others on his/her
appearance and simply by looking at the reflection of one s image on the mirror. Correct selection
of clothinghelps in building the self image.

themselves to others with similar lifestyle. The values, attitudes and interests of each individual
determine lifestyle. Some contemporary lifestyle trends and their implications on clothing selection
are indicated in the following table:
Values Values come from one s culture, environment, family, peers and social experience. Family
members, peers and media influence them. Values are also very individualistic. They cause conflict
between people and sometimes tension between generations. Different values occur in length of

The following are examples of value orientation and their relationship to clothing:
Income The amount of money that consumers spend on clothing and other goods mostly depends
on their income. Consumers living in developed countries may choose a wide variety of goods.
Their income is higher than those in developing and under developing countries. Consumers
income can be measured in three ways: personal income, disposable income and discretionary

society which holds the best hope of satisfying the needs each of us brings as an individual. For
countless immigrants, the struggle to arrive in America was rivaled only by the struggle to gain

money to buy farms or farming equipment. Others settled in cities because farming in America was
very different from that of Europe. Some immigrants, such as the Slavs, simply came to America
too late to acquire land. Jewish and Irish preferred the city because it provided a chance to worship
with other Jewish or Irish without persecution.
Germans America, and what they faced after they landed on our shores. We will begin with the

many Germans from their respective family businesses. In the United States, most Germans lived in

Introduction It is so important that managers understand how to manage. This word manage is not
just getting employees to conform to a specific thing or a standard. As a leader being able to
manage involves planning and leading, organizing and controlling. A good leader or manager may
not be able to hone these four areas as an expert right away, but with mentoring, training, and time

would include examining areas such as strengths and weaknesses from current documentation, tax

Retirement Benefits And Benefits Of The Social Security...
Pensions are company sponsored funds aimed to provide a firm s employees income after
retirement but are not offered by all employers. With the uncertainty of the future of the Social
Security program in the United States and its inadequate benefits for many, a lot of people find
themselves having to rely on their own savings to prepare for income beyond retirement through
savings and retirement accounts such as 401(k)s and IRAs. In order to lessen the burden of finding
their own source of post retirement income, employees need to consider not only wages and other
current benefits when choosing between employment opportunities, but should also consider post
retirement benefits such as pensions and healthcare when calculating total compensation. From a
company s perspective, firm sponsored pension plans and other post retirement benefits are
additional ways to attract employees and retain them, reducing costs associated with turnover and
being able to keep talent within the company. In response to the implementation of post retirement
benefit plans, standards were established outlining the guidelines for accounting in US GAAP and
IFRS. However, different accounting issues exist with regards to pensions that are due to different
causes. NATURE OF ACCOUNTING ISSUES A few of the accounting issues for pension plans
stem from the fact that inherently, pension benefit obligations (PBO) are estimations, projections of

  • 2. Holding Up The Universe Summary HOLDING UP THE UNIVERSE by:JENNIFER NIVEN The story that I choose to read was Holding Up The Universe by Jennifer Niven. I originally choose to read this book because it s cover looked very interesting to me. The title hooked me and reading the book has been nothing but interesting. The book was about to teenagers whose worlds were completely different but were both the exact opposite of ideal. They were both struggling through hard times until they found each other. I would recommend other people my age to read this book because it is so inspirational and because once you start reading it it is hard to put it down. It keeps you interested and helps you learn how to get through some hard times. The setting of Holding Up the Universe ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Holding Up the Universe goes through many conflicts, the development of characters, immense use of different author s craft, and a setting that is unreplicatable. The theme throughout Holding Up the Universe stands strong in teaching that you must always stand up for who you are and what you stand for no matter who hates against you. You should make decisions that will result in your happiness and you will get out of life what you have given it. This is a strong message to hold onto for the young generation of today. We still have massive amounts of peer pressure that try to get a person to think that it is better to go with the flow instead of standing up for who you are. • 3. Watching Milo Murphy s Law This week I began to watch Milo Murphy s law. As a true Phineas and Ferb fan, I really enjoyed it, since there are many jokes and easter eggs hidden in Milo Murphy that date back to Phineas and Ferb. But, just three episodes in, I began to devise a theory. Maybe it s too early in the show to tell, but I have a pretty bold theory, and I m prepared to back it up. My theory: Melissa Chase is Candace s Sister At first glance, this theory seems impossible. So rather than try to explain my theory all at once, I ll explain the answers to different arguments against this theory. Agrument 0: How do we even know the two shows are in the same universe? Well on Huffington Post, Dan Povenmire, one of the creators of Phineas and Ferb, has been ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Flynn is her maiden name. She was married to someone with the last name Chase, although she did not change her last name (which is not uncommon). During her marriage, she had three children, Candace, Mellissa, and Phineas. Once she got divorced, she remarried to Lawrence Fletcher, who was the father of Ferb. The reason we never see Mellissa with her family, is that Linda and her first husband have worked out and agreement to allow Mellissa to visit with her father during the summer. But if this is true, how come Mellissa s last name is Chase, and not Flynn? I think she goes by Chase, because she doesn t want to be immediately associated with Phineas and Ferb. We ve already seen throughout the Phineas and Ferb series that Phineas and Ferb are known all throughout town as the coolest kids ever. I think Melissa uses her former last name as a way to not be immediately associated as just Phineas and Ferb s older sister. Argument 2: Why would there be any reason to assume that the two are sisters? Well, if you look at their pictures, you ll see what I mean. candace_promotional_image_3melissa First of all, they have a very similar red shade of hair. While this doesn t seem to be very compelling evidence, have you ever noticed that both Phineas and his mom are readheads too? phineas_image_proposition_5download Furthermore, have you ever noticed how few redheads are in the Milo Murphy, and Phineas and Ferb series? ... • 4. Pyramid Discipleship Essay Pyramid Discipleship Discipleship in a mega church One of the hardest things to do when you are in a mega church is creating a community of genuine discipleship and not just a Sunday Church . It can seem like a giant task to take on when looked at head first because creating personal relationships with a thousand or more people is a lot of relationships, but there are ways to do it, and following the mold of pyramid discipleship can be very effective. So what is it? Pyramid discipleship is a system set up in a way to where one person will only take on 5 to 10 (at the very most) people at a time to disciple. And as they continue in their discipling there will be others above them to disciple them as they go. When you actually look at this inside of the church it becomes clearer and easier to understand. At the top of the pyramid would be the senior pastor, a maybe some of the elders or other staff members. Moving down the pyramid would be the staff that would oversee the discipleship program. Weather this be one or two people, this is where the discipleship starts. These leaders will be discipled by the elders or senior pastor, this is including not only questions about the program but also walking with them through their spiritual life, and life in ... This will also be available for the leaders to hold for their own groups. We want true, genuine, Christ like hearts of love for this to be done at all. Obviously, if anyone fails to not wear a seat beltwill be charged a $92 dollar fine or even worse death. It is a simple fact that wearing your seat belt can reduce your risk of dying in a car crash. Depending on the needs of the facility, determines the complexity of the system. This can range from basic needs such as billing to the more complex which encompasses several systems that help manage every service available to the patient. Learning to use and integrate this into the nursing field is crucial to effectively care for and manage patients. In 2004, the Office of the National Coordinator (ONC) was established. • 7. Has Pos-Fordism Replaced Fordism in Capitalist Society The beginning of the 20th century when Henry Ford first time put his genius idea of dividing works into separate parts by using assemble line into practice was marked as the start of massive production. It is also the debut for Taylorism in the massive production area. After that such method of massive standard production was named as Foedism. Based on the scientific management theory that comes from Taylorism, the manufacturing area began to be dominated by Fordism. However, since the 1960s when a series of new technologies appeared, manufacturing did not have to be formed in a fixed method. Since it is such a unusual idea to the dominant opinions, theories of post Fordism have suffered some strong criticism. Pollert(1988), one who is opposed to the opinion that Taylorism and Fordism have been replaced by post Fordism , argues that theories of flexibility are too simple to believe and at times incorrect. She says that the comments, which indicate the Fordism once dominated the production method are incorrect. She otherwise, points out that the flexibility to produce specialized products are nothing new and the key of Japanese business success is cheap, well designed and reliable products rather than a small amount of specialized products. Thus, flexible specialization and post Fordism was not that successful. To the issue about relationships between flexibility and skill levels, she maintains a different view that flexibility at times also leads to some opposite effects. In addition, Pollert(1988) also worried about introducing new technology or new management proposals into practices, since it may cause conflicts between workers and management. Apart from Pollert, Stephen Wood(1989) also questions whether the flexibility has led to a greater requirement of skills. And he doubts that the people who support the post Fordism theories exaggerate their cases. Just as Hall(1988) claims that there is still no evidence that ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Compassion is experienced by people across the world in healthcare and in many aspects of life. It is well known in many disciplines, and has been deemed a quality in which nurses possess in their profession. The idea is one that is familiarized by many, but is not clearly defined in nursing education or practice but has been the foundation regarding the high quality of care nurses are thought to contribute to the medical world. • 9. Letter To Zeitoun As a student of Mills High School, I am writing you this letter in hopes that you will consider my position on the continued authorization of Zeitoun being read at Mills. In the best interest of the student body of Mills, I firmly believe that Zeitoun should continue as summer reading due to the numerous positive effects it can have on students. Despite the now verified illegal actions of the main character, Abdulrahman Zeitoun, after the book s publication, Zeitoun still serves its original purpose of illustrating discrimination towards Muslims in order to educate Americans of the prevalence of Islamophobia in a post 9/11 society. Zeitoun, as a Syrian American, and his wife Kathy, a converted Muslim, have both endured the negative consequences of Islamophobia. However, days after Hurricane Katrina, Zeitoun s heroic actions such as navigating the flood waters in order to rescue others, were disregarded when he and his friends were arrested on the fictitious charge of looting and the assumption of a connection to radical Islamic groups due to the common stereotype of all Muslims being radicals. Throughout Steven Spielberg’S Jaws Jaws Response Paper Throughout Steven Spielberg s Jaws social class and wealth play a large role in character development as well as story progression. As seen from the beginning, the town of Amity is the hotspot for vacationers and in most cases, those of higher economic status. A stark difference can be seen between the status of islanders (those who live in Amity) versus those who only come to vacation, such as between Sheriff Brody and Dr. Hooper. Money and stature are also key throughout the film as a motivator for several of the film s characters, specifically Mayor Larry Vaughn, Quint and Dr. Hooper to drive their major decisions. In contrast to the first incident the townspeople are now immediately swarming over the attack and searching for answers. Mrs. Kinter, in her desperation for justice, even goes as far as blaming Brody (again a non islander) for her son s death rather than Mayor Vaughn who had been the real culprit behind keeping the beaches open. She also enables two more examples of money and status driven character development by offering a cash reward to anyone that can catch and kill the shark that attacked her son. The character most obviously driven by financial gain is the fisherman Quint who at the town meeting immediately following the attack on Alex Kintner explains that he will bring in the shark for $10,000 instead of the $3,000 offered by Mrs. Kintner. Just as Mayor Vaughn seeks to capitalize on the summertime and tourists, Quint is interested in his own financial gain rather than the safety and wellbeing of the town. Dr. Hooper, as Mayor Vaughn points out, is also likely motivated by money and stature related to finding and killing the monstrous shark. While trying to explain how big and dangerous the shark really is, Mayor Vaughn criticizes Hooper for only wanting to get fame and fortune by having his name in a National Geographic magazine. Although he insists that he is strictly interested in the science behind the beast and protecting the people of Amity the act of discovery often can harbor monetary and status related gain. Its origins go back to the 16th century when it was a trading post to China and Vietnam. It fits the scenario of being the major urban growth area for the country. • 30. The Role Of Centralized Policies On The State Capacities This part explains the centralized policies with focus on the state capacities, which is the vital factor of developmental states model, and emphasizes on implications of the centralization for resource rich developmental states. The initial stage of the extractive industry demands the centralization in which the governmentexerts the strong state capacities, such as abilities to autonomously have its policyownership (e.g. design and implement industrial policies), to efficiently mobilize resources and to rationally allocate revenues from the resources to more productive sectors in a given society (Arellano Yanguas and MejГa Acosta, 2014). Such a state led development often results from political leadership based on a strong ideology called developmentalism and requires the trained and efficient bureaucracy to devise national development schemes and implement relevant legal frameworks (Reinert, 2010). In addition to the capacities of setting up development plans, the successful development in resource based economy depends on their ability to save all or part of the revenues from the extractive industries (Lewin, 2011). Since the non renewable resources are destined to be depleted in the future, the mineral wealth is limited, and it means the state should save the revenues as much as possible to prepare for the future depletion (Lange and Wright, 2002). Large and small corporations alike, as well as individuals are at risk of losing personal information to hackers, opening up doors to cyber attacks and theft. Statistics show that half of American adults have been hacked this year alone (Pagliery). Security experts and law enforcement say that hackers are actively scanning merchants networks for ways to gain remote access to their systems. The Department of homeland Security and Secret service recently, estimated that more than 1,000 businesses in the United States had been infected with malware programmed to siphon payment card details from cash registers. • 34. A Sphere Poem In his 2006 collection, District and Circle , Seamus Heaney responds to the ever changing and developing world around him. To do so he often relies upon the exploration of the past, memory, and personal identity through the use of language. In the second poem of District and Circle , A Shiver , Seamus Heaney is dependent upon these concepts to construct a thematically rich poem. Heaney s A Shiver utilises language to explore the themes of the past, memory, and personal identity. The Petrarchan sonnetdescribes the action of wielding a tool: the energy that is associated with it, as well as an understanding of the destructive power that it wields: the way you had to stand to swing the sledge . By using a Petrarchan sonnet Heaney introduces the concept of the past within his poetry, due to the historical context of the Renaissance style of writing. The description of the tool, in past tense and therefore illuminating Heaney s fascination of the past, ultimately leads to a metaphor in regards to what occurs when strength, and therefore power, falls into the wrong hands. The tool that is used within A Shiver to demonstrate this power is a sledgehammer most commonly used by labourers as a way to demolish material items and it is implied that Heaney himself has operated the sledgehammer and is, almost, frightened by its power. This can then be contributed to the overall metaphor of misused power. This metaphor also demonstrates Heaney s personal narrative voice within ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This study represents a parallel to the behavior found in incarcerated humans. Jails cause the same psychological side effects as prisons, to a smaller degree, in the effects of being en caged, however, the overall standard of living in jails is much higher. There is a decent relationship between the guards and the jailers. The jailers are allowed to interact with the same people on their block between lockdown times. Lock down is when the jailers are confined to their cells, usually at night and for a short while in the day, during a change of shift. This method allows inmates to play cards, watch TV together and at very least walk around something else besides their cell. The prison system, however, usually remains in lockdown all the time, although they can speak to each other, they usually can t see each other without a mirror. Observing these two methods, and what little problems there are in jails as opposed to prisons leads me to believe that if you treat a human being like a human being they will act like a human being. If you lock them in a cage all day they may as well act like an animal. The time has come, the Walrus said,? To talk of many things:?Of shoes and ships and sealing wax ?Of cabbages and kings ?And why the sea is boiling hot ?And whether pigs have wings. (Carroll 61 66 qtd. in Shaw)The Walrus s speech is a remark on politicians gathering listeners and mesmerizing them into thinking that everything they say is pertinent to them when really it is all nonsense (De Rooy). Oysters do not care about shoes, they do not even have feet, which Carroll points out in a previous line. Before the walk, the oysters did make sure that ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

This affects his/her production which ultimately determines the organization s success (Brooke, Russell, Price, 1988). According to the success of an individual, attitude is directly proportional to his/her effectiveness. The attitude and perception employees approach their work with is the same determinant of their maximum output. Attitude can also be manipulated by the belief, self values, and attachment towards the specified task assigned (Brooke, Russell Price, 1988). In the artistic world of museums, there has always been a craving to own the most valuable antiquities created by human kind. The biggest battle of antiquities relies on the Elgin Marbles, which were once part of the Parthenon, a magnificent creation of Athenians to worship Athena The Goddess of War (British Museumweb npg). This temple stands atop the Acropolis, on the site of another lost temple to Athens patron goddess. Little is known about this first structure except that it was still under construction in 480 B.C. when Persian forces sacked the city and demolished the Acropolis. The Parthenon is very famous, and tourists from all over the world visit this temple to contemplate the talent of past generations. In present times, we have Greece, which claims that the Elgin Marblesshould be repatriated; on the other hand we have Britain, which currently possesses the Elgin Marbles displayed in the British Museum. The British Museum acquired these sculptures thanks to Lord Elgin, a British ambassador to the Ottoman Empire. Lord Elgin was passionate about the ancient Greek art. Between 1801 1805 he removed about half of the remaining sculptures back to Britain (BM web npg). This big dispute has garnered extensive media attention. • 44. The Presence Of Vitamin C Introduction: The presence of Vitamin C (Ascorbic Acid) in an individual s diet is critical since humans, in fact, does not have the ability to synthesize them ourselves. Vitamin C is essential for human health. It is an antioxidant scavenger and it is also vital for tissue maintenance and repair. The lack of Vitamin C in one s system can lead to numerous kinds of illnesses. For example, severe Vitamin C in a prolonged period can lead to scurvy. Vitamin C can be obtained from fruit, vegetables, and lab made Vitamin C tablets. The synthesis of Vitamin C supplements in the laboratory was found to be extremely efficient in 1933. They are now largely manufactured in laboratories and sold to the market. However, degradation of Vitamin C occurs over time. The rate of degradation will be accelerated when exposed to air, light, and heat. Therefore, it is essential for the manufacturers to acknowledge the rate of degradation so they could estimate how much Vitamin C should be made and when the expiry date should be. In this experiment a solution of Vitamin C is added to a solution containing of known excess of iodine. At this point, the solution will turn blue black in colour and this excess amount of iodine can then be titrated against standardized sodium thiosulphate. Their mutual love and hatred for one another, and for themselves, provides an intensely dark comedy that exposes their inner conflicts, their racial bigotry and their low self esteem, as they struggle to survive in a contrived culture to which neither will ever really belong. John Fante s description of Los Angeles during the depression of gaunt faces and lost humanity is haunting and riveting, as told through the eyes of a young man who is not altogether stable. The smog, traffic, dust, grime and shallow lifestyles of southern California were already present in 1939, making this story relevant still today. The earthquake scene in the story is just as realistic as it might be today, complete with military intervention and the emergence of human kindness in the face of disaster. For centuries now, philosophers from countries all over the world have dedicated their lives to the study of the nature of knowledge, reality, existence, and academic discipline. These studies have taken them places within their field that question their own existence, the existence of everyone and everything around them, and even what is right and wrong in the world they live in. However, today s philosophy is somewhat different than it once was in the age of Aristotle, Plato, and Descartes. One of the more current and controversial questions that has been pondered by philosophers of the Twenty and Twenty First Centuries is whether or not it is possible for artificial intelligence, such as phones, laptops, or Smart TV s, to function like a human brain would. These days, we have the capability of signaling somebody halfway across the world or finding out any piece of information within seconds. Our treasured pieces of technology are kept near us at all times and it is a comfortable feeling knowing that we have them around, even when there s no interaction with them. We treat and care about our technology as if it were a friend. And despite the fact that technology often seems to have the ability to communicate back to us, they do not actually think like a human would. Although artificial intelligence is able to process information easily and quickly, it can not in fact properly interpret, therefore it will never measure up to a human s capability of processing. Another question that we put a theory to was, Does a piglet decompose faster if it is on the grass /dirt versus being on the cement? Archetypal Hero Journey The monumental piece of non fiction work titled The Hero with a Thousand Faces, first published in 1949 by Joseph Campbell points out an apparent monomyth of the hero through superb use of example and literary analysis. In this book Campbell presents three main phases of the archetypal hero; The Departure, The Initiation, and The Return. Within these three main phases there exist numerous sub phases that describe nearly all aspects of the heros journey and its impact upon the entire monomyth. It is interesting to note that Herakles receives little to no supernatural aide in this story, contrary to the monomyth perhaps identifying as one of the great gods of the time. The journey s road of trials is very evident in this myth as Herakles must perform ten (actually twelve due to stipulations by the king) labors in order to achieve forgiveness and ultimately become immortal. Most heroes also experience a metaphysical death in which they have to cross into the realm of the underworld and return with knowledge or an item. Herakles does this for his twelfth and final labor, by traveling to the underworld in order to capture the guardian of the underworld, Cerberus, and return him once the king saw that he had completed the task. The final act that Herakles does that fits into the monomyth archetype of the hero is his act of becoming immortal. Upon his death funeral pyre, when the flame is lit he is risen up to Olympus and is granted the gift of immortality. This is significant for several reasons; firstly it shows that Hera in fact did embrace him at the end of his journey by allowing him to have immortality. Also his immortality ... They exhibit extraordinary strength and unique electrical properties, apart from being efficient conductors of heat. Inorganic nanotubes have also been synthesized, by researchers intrigued by this particular field. Manufacturing a nanotube is dependent on applied quantum chemistry, specifically, orbital hybridization. Nanotubes are composed entirely of sp2 bonds, like the ones seen in graphite. This bonding structure, stronger than the sp3 bonds found in diamond, provides the molecules with their unique strength. Nanotubes naturally align themselves into ropes held together by Van der Waals forces. Under high pressure, nanotubes can merge together, trading some sp2 bonds for sp3 bonds, thus acquiring great possibility for producing strong, unlimited length wires through high pressure nanotube linking. Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are allotropes of carbon with a cylindrical nanostructure. Nanotubes have been constructed with length to diameter ratio of up to 132,000,000:1, significantly larger than for any other material. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Pensions are company sponsored funds aimed to provide a firm s employees income after retirement but are not offered by all employers. With the uncertainty of the future of the Social Security program in the United States and its inadequate benefits for many, a lot of people find themselves having to rely on their own savings to prepare for income beyond retirement through savings and retirement accounts such as 401(k)s and IRAs. In order to lessen the burden of finding their own source of post retirement income, employees need to consider not only wages and other current benefits when choosing between employment opportunities, but should also consider post retirement benefits such as pensions and healthcare when calculating total compensation. From a company s perspective, firm sponsored pension plans and other post retirement benefits are additional ways to attract employees and retain them, reducing costs associated with turnover and being able to keep talent within the company.
