How Of A Lab Report
How to Write a Lab Report
The purpose of a lab report is to describe your lab experiment in such detail (including what was used,
when it took place, who was present, how the lab went, what happened, what results were found, and
the overall discussions and conclusions) that your described experiment or lab could be replicated by
someone of similar education and training who was not present. A lab report should be written as a
description of what you did, not instructions for doing the lab. Another goal (especially at this level) is
to thoroughly explain what you did and what you learned.
When writing a lab report, do not use personal pronouns such as we or I , and so on. For example,
write, The egg was placed in a container rather than I placed the egg in a container . The report should
be written in past tense. Your paragraphs should be one and a half spaced. Choose a professional font
and use a font size of 10, 11, or 12. ALL WRITING MUST BE YOUR OWN WORDS even if you
were working with other people!
A lab report contains the following components:
Title
The title should be concise (try for less than ten words) and should reflect the factual content or
purpose of the lab / paper. A good title is straightforward and uses keywords that researchers in a
particular field will recognize (such as pH Lab , or Virtual pH Lab ).
Introduction
The introduction of a lab report states the purpose of your experiment. Your hypothesis should be
included in the introduction, as well

The purpose of his proposal is to provide inquiry and identify the best way to implement fundamental
plans to individuals who wish to build and run a small business in addition to the lack of information
they may bear on the importance and sustainability of protecting their networks and data against cyber
attacks.
Figure 1: Map Display of international cyber attacks. Introduction
In recent years, Cybercrime has increased radically and it is becoming more vital for people to grant
protection on their computers and data just as they do with anything else they deem needs to be
secured. The improved rate for the need of security also applies to conceptual institutes of small
businesses. Small businesses keep record of client, personal, product, and explicit company finance

I believe that all people are meant to do something special and that everyone has a talent or a knack
for something where they can be extraordinary. The key is to find it and embrace it. Its a sad thing to
see so many people muddle through their lives just living to work, putting in their time and doing just
enough to get by and making just enough to survive. So many people go through life and never find
that one thing that moves them, that inspires them and gives meaning to their career. Other times I see
people that do have a passion for something but are just to afraid to go after it. They are afraid to fail
or that they won t be able to support themselves if they follow their dreams. That fear hangs over them
for a long time before they finally let their dream be extinguished and then just live a life of regret.
Most people never regret the risks they take in life, but they often regret the risks they
DIDN T take. I took that risk and it changed my life forever. I m not only able to take care of my
family and spoil them rotten, but I am able to live my life on my own terms and under my own rules.
If you re like me and dream about the markets at night and on Sunday get goosebumps of excitement
from the mark opening in a few hours...if you sit at your cubicle hating your job and your boss as the
only thing you want to be doing is trading, then this class is going to be the tool that gets you where

How Does Scrooge Change In A Christmas Carol
John F. Kennedy once said, Change is the law of life. And those who look only to the past or present
are certain to miss the future. This means that if you just let the world pass you by then the past is
ruined then the future will be the same until you choose to change it. In the play A Christmas Carol
By: Charles Dickens, the main character Ebenezer Scrooge was looking in the past at how he had love
his sister, and finds out that he can be caring. He just had to try to be nice by changing the way that he
spoke and acted. In the beginning Scrooge was a mean and selfish old man and in the end Scrooge
became a nice, giving and changed man. Whenever somebody would attempt to talk to Scrooge he
would just ignore them or say, Bah, Humbug! When he was invited to come to Fred s Christmas party,
Scrooge said, I ll dine alone, thank you. This was a rude comment in response to a nice gesture from
Fred, his nephew. Are they still in the workhouses? asked Scrooge to the gentleman visitor about the
poor people. You better be here early the next morning, Scrooge said rudely to Bob on his way out.
Scrooge has many more impolite and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Christmases that Scrooge was a better man in the past. Oh I loved her, said Scrooge with a smile on
his face when he saw Fann, his loving little sister. There was also the Ghost of Christmas Present.
With the help of both of them, Scrooge was beginning to become a greater man when he saw how
awfully Mr. Bob Cratchit was struggling. The Ghost of Christmas Present showed Scrooge how the
other people around him cared for him. At Fred s party and at the Cratchit house, they both gave a
toast to Scrooge s good health. Looking at these two instances Scrooge started to turn into a finer man

How Does Watching Tv Corrupts The Mind
When people generally think of television, most may assume it rots the mind. Freelance writer Rachel
Krantz not only believes that TV is not useful for your mind, it may kill you, decrease your chances of
having kids, ruin the ones you do have, and possibly turn you violent. Could any of this have
happened to me as I was binge watching The Simpsons from seasons one to eight during the summer?
I initially thought that this show was prone to dumb me down as I did this, but instead it enlightened
me through its clever writing. Even with gags as dumb as an old man hurt by a football thrown to his
groin, I felt as if no other show was as thoughtful and full of heart as The Simpsons. Despite that
Krantz s claims are backed by academic studies and research on television, it should be the least
concern for our minds. Television does not rot our minds; it intellectually challenges and aptly adjusts
our minds depending on how we use it.
The further time a kid spends watching television, the larger their brains grow. That seems great,
although apparently this is considered unhealthy for them. A recent Japanese study reveals that as kids
between ages 5 through 18 spend, on average, two hours of watching TV per day, certain areas of their
brains were growing. The rise in brain volume of these kids was linked to a fall in their verbal IQ.
However, the data in this study was not clear if TV watching caused this (Sanders). While this study
needs further elaboration and should be

Abraham Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address
Throughout the semester, the readers have been clashing with each other over which label best fits the
author, but they have ignored the minute particulars. These readers are looking at the forest as a broad
generalization, and they are missing out on what the forest really is... a bunch of trees. All of these
trees are diverse but similar: they are American authors, and the forest is American literature. One
might think that this is a flimsy analogy, but it is the most apt and succinct way of explaining this
issue. To truly understand any text, one must couch it within historical context; to be valid, an
interpretation has to make sense within the historical context, and it has to agree with the minute
particulars of the text. If either of these criterion are not met, then the interpretation will not be
representative of the text whatsoever. It is imperative that one pay heed to the minute particulars and
the text s historical context: otherwise, the text will be vastly misinterpreted and misrepresented in any
discussion of the text. The students grossly mischaracterized Abraham Lincoln s Gettysburg Address
as a pro abolitionist tract; they also seemed to think that President Lincoln was some divine martyr for
anti slavery sentiment, and that he was an exemplary person with regards to American identity. They
could not be further from the truth. Historical context is paramount to understanding Lincoln s
Gettysburg Address . The text starts off with an appeal to

Essay On SARS
Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome or SARS for short, is an internationally known epidemic that first
broke out in 2002 in southern China. SARS is caused by the SARS coronavirus, or SARS CoV which
was genetically proven to have originated from Guangzhou. Guangzhou is the origin of which caused
the spread of SARS into other countries. By 2003 SARS became a global disease severely affecting
several other countries such as, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Vietnam, Canada, and Singapore. SARS causes
numerous respiratory complications, some of which become fatal if not properly treated in adequate
time. Treatment options for SARS vary depending on the severity of the disease, how strong or weak

Lots of times when respiratory failure and hypoxemia become present, and as the infected patient s
health continues to deteriorate they are placed in the hospital s ICU. If further decline of the
respiratory system takes place and treatment does not succumb to the disease ARDS can take place,
which will require invasive mechanical ventilation. Death has occurred as a result from this disease
which is why the seriousness of seeking treatment early on is momentous. Due to SARS being a
newly discovered disease in 2002 2003, treatment options, possible cures, and plans for care of this
disease were unprecedented. Oxygen therapy was normally initiated in the preliminary stages of
SARS. Non Invasive Ventilation (NIV) was reported to be found efficacious in those with respiratory
failure as a result from SARS. NIV reduced the occurrence of intubation or invasive ventilation, as
well as reduced the length of hospital stays in patients researched with SARS. Ribavirin which is a
drug that is helpful in fighting certain viruses by preventing replication of viral cells has been greatly
used in the treatment of SARS. Research later provided that the drug had no notable effect on the
disease. Lopinavir, another antiviral drug was another drug that was experimented with as a treatment
of SARS and was found to reduce overall death rate by 2.3% as well as intubations. Other drugs such

HBS Case Innovation and Collaboration at Merrill Lynch
In a rapidly changing world, organizations need to continually identify new opportunities beyond
existing competencies if they are to survive and prosper. Customers also increasingly want customized
products. Customer service has become a hygiene factor and customer loyalty is now being driven by
faster innovation, rapid concept to market and product co creation. This has led to the extension of the
collaboration paradigm to customer facing functions in the supply chain, namely the product design
and prototyping phase. Collaboration is becoming a new and important source of competitive
advantage.

To achieve the further successful innovation and collaboration, there are many important things
Browning as the director of the research department should have thought about.
As a leader for change, Browning should set the theme by communicating inspiring visions, which
provide a picture of the future combining poetry and prose, imagination and pragmatism, drawing on
destination, dream, prize, target, message, and first step. So, first, as a leader Browing must be
secure about team s charter, mission, goals and objectives to team members. And employees must
believe a certain level of individual effort will lead to achieving the corporation s standards of
performance. So Browing should set stretch goals which they energize people. And Browing must
confront the key questions that must be answered and then communicate the inherent truth that
inspires. The communication of that inspiring vision is arguably the indispensable condition. So For
this, he should launch internal website for his innovative project and this website will help team
members expedite project s vision communication as well as timely information access. To be
specific, formally, the analysts can share information about each sector regularly through email, e
news letter, and regular cross sector meeting. For example, the equity analyst can have the summary
about current bond market or derivative market weekly or biweekly. Also, through inner information

Green Children By Samuel Foust
The Green Children of Woolpit There have been many legends and myths told throughout history.
There are so many different versions and theories of these stories that have been formed by one s
opinions of what they think happened. There are usually no hard facts to prove details of these events,
or if they even occurred. One of these stories is the green children of woolpit. There are many
different opinions and theories about it. Although there are many accounts of this story, they are all
pretty similar in telling the same story. It starts with two children, a girl and a boy, with green tinted
skin who had wondered to the village of Woolpit speaking a foreign language. The boy eventually
died when he and his sister became ill, but the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The argument that Foust presents is The reason I believe they are aliens is their green skin and the
language they spoke was all unknown and mysterious to us humans. Also, the place filled with
perpetual twilight is not a place that is on Earth (Foust n.p.). Even though I do not agree with this
theory, it is sensible as to why one would believe this. Without being presented with the facts of the
matter, it could seem as if there would be no other explanation other than aliens. However, the green
skin is easily explained by illness. The language the children might have seemed strange to the
villagers of woolpit, but they could have just been speaking Dutch, which is the language that most
Flemish people speak. Since the children were Flemish fleeing from their hometown, they most likely
used underground passages and even maybe sewer holes, it is possible the children could have
mistaken the places they traveled as being in perpetual twilight. In Foust s essay Green Children Are
Aliens , he presents the logical fallacy, Hasty Generalization, which means the author jumps to
conclusions based on little evidence. This logical fallacy is used when Foust says The reason I believe
they are aliens is their green skin and the language they spoke was all unknown and mysterious to us
humans. Foust provides little evidence to prove his theory that the children were aliens, the only
evidence he provides is they had green skin and spoke a language the villagers could not understand.
There are so many possibilities of what the green skin could have been caused by such as: arsenic
poisoning, hypochromic anemia, malnourishment, etc. Just because they had green skin does not mean
they were aliens. Also, the language the children spoke may have been just strange to the villagers of
Woolpit, chances are they were speaking Dutch. Dutch is the common

Economic Growth And Development Of Host Countries
The world has experienced economic growth and development over the past years. As a result of this,
some countries experience high growth of mega cities and urbanization in general. Wang et al. (2009)
noted that, migration of the world population into the world cities have almost doubled since 20th
century. The growth of cities has been associated to high living standards and high social status of the
people. Fujita (2012) in his report realized that, the booming urbanization has led to the growth of
most countries GDP.
Even though, there is already massive development in growth of urbanization across the globe, the
growth is projected to continue at a greater rate than before. With the developing countries expected to
experience rising number of megacities. In addition, a greater population is expected to invade the
cities continuously. Moreover, the increasing number of cities has been noted to contribute
tremendously to economic development of host countries. According to Liotta (2012), a booming
political economy within the cities drives the development of developing countries.
However, despite the huge benefits of the growth and development of megacities across the world,
most urbanists and economists have realized that, there is persistent overpopulation and poverty in
most Asia, Africa and Latin America countries. This has incapacitated the urbanization efforts and
strengths of most countries. Kaplan (2012) points out that, most megacities across the globe face

Crimes
I. Intro What is a hate crime
. A hate crime is when a person intentionally selects a victim because of the race, color, religion,
national origin, ethnicity, gender or sexual orientation. A person who commits a hate crime can come
from any background and be any race. The term hate crime is meant to differentiate criminal behavior
that is caused by prejudice from behavior that is motivated by greed jealously, anger, politics and like.
Hate groups differ from one another in terms of membership, ideology and activities but do share one
thing in common; they direct violence towards and against groups of people they do not understand.

Despite its name, the NBPP s founding was independent; it is not an official successor organization to
the Black Panther Party. Members of the original Black Panther Party have insisted that this party is
illegitimate and have vociferously objected that there is no new Black Panther Party. Critics
characterize what they see as the NBPP s actively destructive extremism by pointing to examples such
as Muhammad s Million Youth March , a youth equivalent of the Million Man March in Harlem in
which 6000 people protested police brutality but also featured a range of speakers calling for the
extermination of whites in South Africa. The rally ended in scuffles with the NYPD as Muhammad
urged the crowd to attack those officers who had attempted to confiscate the NBPP members guns.
Chairs and bottles were thrown at the police but only a few in the conflict suffered injuries. Perhaps
more significantly was the fact that Al Sharpton appeared and spoke at this event, and was criticized
later for taking part in its controversial rhetoric. The Million Youth March became an annual event
thereafter, but rapidly lost popularity as time progressed. The group believes that 9/11 was conspiracy

1939- 1945 Were Possibly The Worst Years In American History.
1939 1945 were possibly the worst years in American history. During this time, World War II was
occurring. Adolf Hitler was in complete control. He even went outside the battle grounds to wreck
havoc. He went to Babi Yar...the last place where Jews could hide.
Babi Yar is located in Kiev, Ukraine. During World War II, a massacre took place in the small town,
killing more than 1,000 Jews. The Nazis attacked them on September 29, 1943. Afterwards, the war
continued to rage, only to end in 1945. During World War II, Adolf Hitler rose to fame as the harsh
dictator of Germany. Hitler would then form his own army, then known as the Nazis. The Nazis would

During the massacre, over 1,000 Jews, Soviet Officials, and Russian prisoners were killed. They were
executed at the Babi Yar ravine. ( The Einsatgruppen) The total count of people murdered at Babi Yar
was 34,000. The total count of Jews murdered in World war II was 6 million. This massacre occurred
towards the end of the war. Shortly after the massacre, the United States would jump in to save the
day! They would help the Allies defeat the Nazis and their army. Hitler would still go on to terrify the
rest of Europe after Babi Yar. The aftermath of Babi Yar is not a great one. It took over 6 years to
rebuild Babi Yar and everything that was destroyed at Babi Yar. Many shelters, homes, buildings, and
personal stations were destroyed during the massacre. The Nazis showed no mercy. (Hjelnguard, Kim)
After the massacre, the Nazis tried to hide evidence that anything ever happened by covering the dead
bodies with nothing but dirt and rock. The Nazis were convicted of what they tried to escape with, and
some were caught. They not only tired to hide the bodies with dirt and rock, but they even burned
them! When the remains were given to families, they were probably holding some stranger that they
never even met, instead of their loved ones. Shortly after the Nazis were convicted, things slowly
started going against Hitler and the Nazis. With the help of the United States, the Allies defeated the

The Sisterhood Of The Traveling Pants
The Right Attitude
There is a quote from the book The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants by Ann Brashares that the
character Coach Brevin says The problem is not the problem, the problem is your attitude about the
problem, got that? (Brashares 11). This quote, I found , has always helped me when I am facing any
complicated problems in both my college life and my personal life. An example of the meaning of this
quote is found in Grant Berry s A Change of Attitude (Berry 63 73). The problem, as implied by Grant

A way that I find a balance between my college life and my personal life is to have a day planner , a
schedule, or a to do list, that way I know what has to be done first and what can wait to be done. When
planning my life I know when I have the free time to do what I want. For instance, in Grant Berry s A
Change of Attitude, Grant did not find a good balance between his school work and his personal life.
He was consumed by his school work, there was no extra time to spend with his family. Grant
believed that the sacrifice was necessary to succeed in college, even though he didn t like making
those sacrifices. I don t believe that to be true, some of the sacrifices that Grant made could have been
avoided. Having a good day planner or a to do list could have helped Grant find the extra time to
spend with his family. For that reason, having the right attitude and knowing what is important to us
and balancing that in our life can be hard, but if done the right way we can achieve our

Political Ignorance And Its Impact On Politics
A popular Government, without popular information, or the means of acquiring it, is but a Prologue to
a Farce or a Tragedy; or, perhaps both. Knowledge will forever govern ignorance: And a people who
mean to be their own Governors, must arm themselves with the power which knowledge gives. A
quote by James Madison, the author of the bills of rights, in a letter he wrote to W.T. Barry. Even
James Madison was talking about ignorance in his day. However, that is not altogether surprising
considering people were less informed and less educated in his era. Today citizens have arrived at a
dangerous place of ignorance, and that political ignorance seems to be growing and flourishing. I will
admit, I myself, have been found guilty of this very ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Political corruption is one major challenge Mr. Smith comes across. There is a saying in the Bible,
which says, The love of money is the root of all evil. Sadly, Mr. Smith encounters that evil when he
realizes that Senator Paine, one of his role models, is under the grip and control of Mr. Taylor s
manipulation, so much so that they lie when a special committee reviews Mr. Smith s motives for
trying to pass the bill to build the boy s camp. After seeing all of the deceit and darkness Mr. Smith
says, Well, I m gettin out of this town so fast, away from all the words and all the monuments and the
whole rotten show. Mr. Smith, recognizes and calls out the wicked trickery as a game that is being
played. Unfortunately, history is overflowing with examples of corruption such as this, as many
politicians have been swayed by the promise of wealth, fortune, and even one might comment,
seduction. There is corruption, bribery, and deceit found throughout history. Simply search corruption
in politics and articles upon articles pull up referencing scandals and lies committed by those in Senate
or any other branch of government. Take President Bill Clinton, for example, and his many lies
denying the fact that he had unhealthy relations with another woman besides his wife. Another
example would be Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr. who was accused, around 2012, of using money provided by
donors to spruce up his home. So, how do these circumstances

John Augustine s The Confessions St. Augustine
In Chapter IV of his Confessions, St. Augustine describes his terrible grief at the death of a friend, and
then to the adherence to mortal things, and why he regrets them. He writes that everybody experiences
death differently, but the death of his close friend made him realize that this life is temporal. He
continues saying that he was stricken with grief from the death of his friend and that made him want to
move away from his hometown. Everything there brought his friend to mind, and he was always
looking for him. He was constantly in tears and was miserable. My home became a torture to me, a
strange world of unhappiness, all that I shared with him was transformed into a cruel torment. My
eyes looked for him everywhere . Augustine ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
And if he sought comfort from this fantasy, it only made him more downcast. Finally, though, time
brought a measure of healing, and here is where Augustine begins a subtle argument about sorrow and
the nature of God. He says that the sorrow he felt at his friend s death was so extreme because he had
poured his soul onto the dust, but loving a man as if he would never die who nevertheless had to die.
(IV, viii).
Augustine s draws the distinction between caritas, as seeking one s final end in God, and cupiditas, as
seeking one s final end in that which is other than God. He seems to ask this question of himself The
things which are in the world God made, that is, the sky and the earth, the sea, the sun, the moon, the
stars, all adornments of the heavens. What about the adornments of the sea? Fish and all swimming
creatures. And those of the land? Animals, trees, flying creatures. These are all in the world, God made
them. Why should I not love what God has made?
Augustine carries on with; all persons want to be happy; and no persons are happy who do not have
what they want. From this statement, he proceeds with questioning what a person should obtain to
achieve happiness since happiness is a matter of having what one wants in order to be happy. The
answer proposed by Augustine is that happiness constitutes something that can be had when it is
wanted

The Pompeii Exhibition
When I attended the Pompeii exhibition, several antiquities from different sections captured my
attention. The first section allows one to experience how a Pompeii citizen would spend the day in the
city. From the lively and vibrant markets and shops to relaxing Roman baths, this city had it all. The
first object to catch my eye was a water sprout in the shape of a satyr. The water spout was made of
two main components. The first element was a circular disc made of bronze and attached to it was the
satyr. On the border of the disc laid meticulous designs that closely resembled leaves. As for the satyr,
on its head rested a wreath composed of leaves. With high arched eyebrows, frown lines and tight lips,
the satyr is a perfect representation ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Made of terracotta, this statue was easily over six feet tall and it represented a male actor
impersonating a female character. The actor in question was wearing a floor length short sleeved
dress. Even if the dress lacked motifs and intricate designs, the soft creases that ran along the entire
dress brings a feminine touch to the overall image. Another factor adding a feminine touch was the
detailed hair updo. Both of these soft and delicate features contrast greatly with the face of the
character. Unlike the rest of the features, the character s face is harsh. This had to do with the mask
that the actor is wearing. With his eyes and mouth wide open, he is projecting strong emotions. During
that time period, since men were the only ones allowed to participate in theatrical plays, they were
required to wear masks to present a character. This sculpture expresses the importance of activities and
shows how far people were willing to push boundaries just for the sake of entertainment. I was
impressed by this figure as nowadays play producers look for a certain type of person to play a certain
role whereas back in time, men only had to wear mask to portray a

Inventions That Shaped America Essay
20th Century Inventions that Shaped America
Throughout history many inventions were invented, but did not have a lasting use like the siege
weapons of medieval times, they had there one use and when that uses was no longer needed the
invention was replaced. However, many things we use and take for granted today were invented in the
20th century. The first invention to impact the country was the wright brothers invention the airplane
in 1903, the second advancement in technology was from Fritz Harber in 1909 with the process of
ammonia synthesis, the third and final invention was from Henry Ford in 1913 with the assembly line
production process. These inventions may not have been looked at the time they were invented as
something that would last forever and always be in use.

In order for his vison to become reality he would have to come up with a plan to lower the cost of
production while increasing product output. Product output could be raised if production time could be
reduced according to Vaclav Smil Data from Ford cost books show that 151 hours was needed to make
a car in 1906, 39 in 1914 . This reduction in time spent making one car increased the affordability of
cars for the common people. The price drop was pretty substantial prior to 1913 a car cost $850 $875,
but after 1913 the price dropped 35% to $550 then the next year it was down to $440, after WWII the
price of a car was around $265 (Smil 133). The process of mass production not only worked for the
automotive companies but many other consumer items followed suite, so prices dropped and more

1970 Environmental Issues
The Environmental Protection Agency was created in 1970 to help provide solutions to the
environmental issues and problems that need to be addressed. The name of the agency tells us that
they are here to protect the environment and hold those who would harm our earth responsible for
their actions. Unfortunately, the very agency that has been tasked with our protection has now become
the perpetrator of an environmental disaster in Colorado. Last week, the EPA accidently dumped over
three million gallons of toxic waste into Animus River (Kinkaid, 2015). It would appear that the good

The amount of pollution that has spilled is three times more than was previously reported (Garrison,
2015). As of August 10th, the mine was still discharging 500 gallons a minute into the Animus River.
The EPA administrator Shaun McGrath has stated that the EPA has contained the rest of the spill in
two ponds near the spill site and they are treating it (Garrison, 2015). Another group of people affected
by the spill is the Navajo Nation, and the Navajo Nation commission has declared a state of
emergency. The Nation is 27,000 square miles and has been considered to be the size of some of the
smaller states like West Virginia. Navajo Nation president Russel Begaye has asked an attorney to
look into filing a lawsuit against the EPA (Garrison, 2015). Russel has also stated his dissatisfaction
with the EPA s handling of this disaster, along with not being clear about exactly what toxins have
been released into the river. The people of the Nation are concerned about the water quality and how it
will affect drinking water, cattle, and crops. The EPA seems to have made quite a few mistakes in
dealing with this spill; New Mexico s Governor Martinez says that she did not even find out about the
spill from the EPA. She received the information from tribal officials in Southern Ute (Garrison,

Discussing Critically Religious and Secular Ethical Arguments About Environmental Issues
In his book, The End Of Nature , Bill McKibben highlights the fact that we are destroying the natural
environment at an increasing rate, for our own short term gain. Since the day that man created
agriculture, and industrialisation to follow, the imbalance between man and nature has been
growing[1/2]. This has been accompanied by a massive population increase, tripling in the twentieth
century alone[3]. Human pressure on nature has never been so great. Such pressure has resulted in
environmental issues , ranging from global warming and eutrophication, to the depletion of natural
resources and an increase in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
These are things such as the right to life, freedom of speech, and equality[4]. This tends to be where
the unanimity of opinion ends, some may then consider animal rights, and more extremely, the rights
of non sentient beings like plants, or even inanimate entities, such as rocks.
Views towards ecology on the basis of rights can be separated into deep ecology and shallow ecology ,
distinguished by the Norwegian philosopher Arne Naess[5]. Quite broadly, shallow ecology dictates
that only human beings have rights, other organisms and the environment itself do not. Deep ecology
believes that this is not so, and that animals and the natural world do have rights. Shallow ecology is
anthropocentric, maintaining that the environment should be handled in whichever way is most
beneficial to humankind. No value is placed in the existence of non human animals, other organisms,
and the environment, further than their instrumental use to us.
Shallow ecologists would argue strongly against the idea of inanimate entities such as mountains and
other ecosystems having rights or interests . However, regardless of whether the mountain itself is able
to be interested in its own continued existence, it sustains a great number

He refers to a term used by Samuel Huntington to describe the shifting of powers in the world. Zakaria
states that the international system is more accurately described by Samuel Huntington s term uni
multipolarity. (Zakaria 413) The meaning in this is that in coming new world that there will be other
countries that hold significant power with one superpower still remaining. Zakaria remains optimistic
that the United States will still hold the spot as the most powerful country even as other countries rise,
as long as the U.S. can accept the changes of no longer being the only country with power and learn to
compromise with other countries in order to succeed in what he claims to be the post American world.
Zakaria shows concern for America if they are unable to adapt. He states The irony is that the rise of
the rest is a consequence of American ideas and actions. (418) By that Zakaria means that that the
United States has pushed for other countries to open up to new concepts concerning politics, trade,
and technology and now that other countries have embraced these ideas and America failed to use its
own advice. Overall, Zakaria has a realistic ideology of the effect globalization will have on The

a level ground for all countries to compete for power, global knowledge, and advancement. His main

Rfid Is An Acronym For Radio Frequency Identification
Variations of RFID technology have been in use since the 1940 s. RFID is an acronym for radio
frequency identification. In application RFID is the use of radio signals to wirelessly track and
identify tags that have been placed on an item. RFID is an emerging technology that is helping
transportation companies, retailers, and manufacturers decrease handling times of goods and increase
efficiencies at factories, warehouses, and store fronts by tracking objects with greater flexibility and
less human involvement. RFID technology is unique and more adaptable than other tracking systems
because it does not require a direct line of sight between the scanner and the object being identified.
RFID systems can also identify more than one object simultaneously. This flexibility and efficiency
adds the type of value that is paramount in just in time principles. This paper will describe RFID
technology in detail, and discuss its current uses in security and access control, toll roads, and supply
chain management. RFID had its infancy during World War 2 with an expansion of research in radar
and radio. As with other products that had an initial military application RFID has progressed over
decades to become much more main stream. RFID was first widely used commercially in the 1960 s
as an anti theft device in retail stores. Retailers used a device called an EAS or electronic article

Jesus s Blood With The Cup
One question brought up as a result of reading the narrative. Is Jesus relating the wine to his body in a
literal sense? Jesus identifies his blood with the cup. In the NT, αἷμα may refer to the red fluid within
the body s circulatory system; however, it more often has metaphorical connotations. It may denote
the death of a person, generally as the result of violence or execution...This metaphorical corollary is
especially true when αἷμα is found with ἐκχύννω in 23:35 and 26:28. Thus, in his saying over the cup,
Jesus also speaks of his violent death. The reason this has to be clarified is that it could easily lead a
person to say the cup is his blood in a literal sense. D. A. Carson in his practical counsel to Pastors
said, make sure that your own theology of the Lord s Supper is stable, mature, exegetically grounded,
and thought through. I suspect that one of the reasons why we settle for mere rote in our celebration of
the Lord s Supper is that we have not done the work that would enable us to be much fresher and more
evocative. In personal reflection, this paper and the research to get to this point has helped become
more stable and avoid a rote celebration of the Lord s Supper. This study has codified the connection
to fellowship and philanthropy in a completely different manner than ever before. The historic
development of the doctrines surrounding the Lord s Supper is clearer. I also understand many of the

The Omnipotence And Omniscience Of God Essay
William Maillis
PHL 111
Reaction Paper #2
Professor M. Scott Mayberry
13 December 2016
The Omnipotence and Omniscience of God
Does God exist in the universe, or does the universe exist in God? This is the question mankind must
answer when we discuss the attributes of God. Many times humanity attempts to place God in the
universe and placing universal laws and limitations on God, but God is not bound by the laws of the
universe, because the universe exists in God. If it true that God has created everything than how can
he be limited by anything? Only God could limit Himself, by His own choice to do so. Thomas V.
Morris in his article on the omnipotence of God asks; can God do everything that is logically possible?
Who s logic? Are we made in the Image and Likeness of God, or are we attempting to make Him in
ours? The difficulty is this: as humans, we are imperfect, with our viewpoints so limited is it God we
connect to, or merely our own impression of Him? As imperfect humans, we know only ourselves. We
connect to others, but we can never truly go into anybody s mind but our own. Every person exists in a
specific manner, completely immersed in his individual awareness, which is egocentric and exclusive.
As human beings, we look towards reason and logic to try to understand existence and our place in it.
However, there is no human being who is omniscient, so therefore our logic can be flawed, so what is

Essay on A Review of Peter Brown’s Augustine of Hippo
A Review of Peter Brown s Augustine of Hippo
Peter Brown s Augustine of Hippo is a dense, scholarly work outlining the entire life of the Catholic
bishop. The University of California Press in Berkeley, California published the work in 1967. My
version was the 1973 second paperback printing, found in the University library. Its smallish,
scholarly, serifed, typewritten font allows for a instant respect for the subject matter: the words are at
first imposing, but then revealing as their serious tone complements the complexity of the text. The
pages are studded with footnotes, filling out this work with evidence of Brown s exhaustive research.
There is a three page preface before the work, and, after the work, a ... Show more content on

This want of something more concrete but metaphysical leads straight into the fifth chapter,
Manichaeism. This details the future bishop s obsession with the mysteries and dualism of the
Manichean teaching, as well as Augustine s work at spreading the Manichee philosophy, as well as his
love for what it made him, rather that what it actually taught. Friends, the sixth chapter, details his life
with his unnamed concubine among his celibate Manichee comrades. Next, the seventh chapter, titled
Success, outlines Augustine s first taste of fame as a writer and as a public speaker. Thus, Brown ends
part I.
Brown begins part II, after the chronology, with a chapter on Ambrose, the bishop of Milan that
helped Augustine to convert with his interpretation of the pagan philosophers and the similarities in
the Hebrew prophets that the future bishop had misread, and their influence on the great Greek minds.
Chapter nine, titled The Platonists, describes Augustine s influence by the Plato revivalists Plotinus
and Porphyry, who brought back the old master s works into the mainstream mindset, and how
Augustine reconciled Christianity with this existential thought, leading directly to the next chapter,
Philosophy. It describes the problems that arose in and around Augustine with such reconciliation; the
Platonist teaching

Why I Taught Proper Nouns Should Be Capitalized
Ever since I can remember, I was taught proper nouns should be capitalized. I was taught to capitalize
my name, to capitalize the United States and even to capitalize ethnic identifiers like Asian or Latino.
Naturally when I wrote my first essay with reference to black people I capitalized the word Black. Yet,
when my paper was returned to me I found a note in the margin. The teacher had written, Why did you
capitalize Black? I thought I had made a grammatical mistake, so for a period of time, I stopped
capitalizing the word. Today, I am writing to my elementary school teacher to tell her she was wrong.
I am writing to tell her it is absurd to posit that an entire people do not deserve the respect of a proper
noun. It is absurd to encourage the trivialization of a complex and varied race of people, regarding
them as equally simplistic as the color of a shoe. Today I am making it clear that Black is distinct from
black.
I decided to scan for the definition of the lowercase form of black in The Merriam Webster Dictionary:
thoroughly sinister or evil; very sad, gloomy or calamitous; characterized by hostility or angry
discontent. Immediately I reflected on Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. s words (inspired by Ossie Davis),
maybe the English language should be reconstructed so that teachers will not be forced to teach the
Negro child sixty ways to despise himself, and thereby perpetuate his false sense of inferiority, and the
white child 134 ways to adore himself, and

Symbolism And Symbolism In Wuthering Heights By Emily Bronte
A heart shape symbolizes love, a star shape symbolizes fame, and a diamond shape symbolizes
wealth. Isn t is crazy that a something physical can be utilized within writing to represent something
emotional or figurative? Symbolism is the art of using an object or situation to represent an abstract
idea. It is when an object, person, or situation have both a literal meaning, and a figurative meaning.
Many authors use symbolism to add personality and emotion to their writing. Symbols within pieces
of literature make the writing more enjoyable and interesting to read. Emily Bronte efficiently uses
symbolism throughout her novel Wuthering Heights to enhance her writing and give her work more
richness. Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte takes place in England on two very contrasting estates,
Wuthering Heights, owned by the Earnshaw family, and Thrushcross Grange, owned by the Linton
family. Both of the estates in this novel can be considered symbolic. Wuthering Heights symbolizes
the dark, cold, and gloomy nature of the circumstances around it. They even proclaim in the novel that
the name of the estate is descriptive of the atmosphere tumult to which its station is exposed in stormy
weather (4). The weather around Wuthering Heights also contributes to its symbolic meaning. The
strong winds symbolize the tough times presented to those who live there, along with exemplifying
the toughness of the inhabitants themselves. When Catherine is at Wuthering Heights she often feels

Underground Man Analysis
Dostoevsky s Underground Man is quite possibly the most interesting anti hero in all of literature. His
unique worldview has both shocked and puzzled readers since the novella s publication. One of his
key characteristics is his tendency towards paradox, especially concerning doubt, shame, and
spitefulness. These paradoxes seem to reflect his era, of which he is often critical to the point of
exhaustion. Other features of the Underground Man s psyche mirror the nineteenth century as well.
For example, his anomie is a result of his life as a clerk in (then) modern Saint Petersburg. The
Underground Man s true self may be shrouded by mystery, but it is clear that he is either telling us that
he lives in all of us through our experiences with alienation, or that if we were anywhere near as self
aware as he is, we would live underground as well. One of the most apparent themes in Notes from
Underground is shame. The famous opening lines, I am a sick man.... I am a spiteful man. I am a most
unpleasant man. set the tone for the rest of the book (707). These are clearly not the words of a person
who holds themselves in very high regard. The Underground Man s shame goes beyond self
deprecation as a human. At one point, he admits that he had wished to become an insect many times
(709). Imagery of pests and vermin continues later on when the Underground Man writes about his
propensity for dwelling on the past. He compares himself to a mouse, who retreats to a hole each night
to go over the day s shortcomings. The forty year old narrator says of the mouse: For forty years on
end it will recall its insult down to the last, most shameful detail; and each time it will add more
shameful details of its own, spitefully teasing and irritating itself with its own fantasy (712). The
section continues like this for a considerable length. The significance of the passage lies in that not
only does the Underground Man compare himself to a mouse, but it is a shame filled mouse that
dwells on the past, twisting the truth just as he does in his writings. The psychological root of this
shame is defined by the Underground Man on page 709, where he writes, I swear to you, gentlemen,
that being overly conscious is a disease, a

Jose Mouurinho Research Paper
All Soccer fans know it is not easy to be a back to back champion in any computations, which is the
glamour of soccer. Teams spent a lot of money to buy new players; however, it won t work out all the
time unless the boss is Jose Mourinho. He is considered as the best manager in Europe by many
people or even some say he is the best in the history of soccer. His track record is very impressive.
Since his career began in Barcelona 13 years ago, he won 2 champions league, 1 UEFA super cup,

  • 2. How Of A Lab Report How to Write a Lab Report The purpose of a lab report is to describe your lab experiment in such detail (including what was used, when it took place, who was present, how the lab went, what happened, what results were found, and the overall discussions and conclusions) that your described experiment or lab could be replicated by someone of similar education and training who was not present. A lab report should be written as a description of what you did, not instructions for doing the lab. Another goal (especially at this level) is to thoroughly explain what you did and what you learned. When writing a lab report, do not use personal pronouns such as we or I , and so on. For example, write, The egg was placed in a container rather than I placed the egg in a container . The report should be written in past tense. Your paragraphs should be one and a half spaced. Choose a professional font and use a font size of 10, 11, or 12. ALL WRITING MUST BE YOUR OWN WORDS even if you were working with other people! A lab report contains the following components: Title The title should be concise (try for less than ten words) and should reflect the factual content or purpose of the lab / paper. This means that if you just let the world pass you by then the past is ruined then the future will be the same until you choose to change it. In the play A Christmas Carol By: Charles Dickens, the main character Ebenezer Scrooge was looking in the past at how he had love his sister, and finds out that he can be caring. He just had to try to be nice by changing the way that he spoke and acted. In the beginning Scrooge was a mean and selfish old man and in the end Scrooge became a nice, giving and changed man. Whenever somebody would attempt to talk to Scrooge he would just ignore them or say, Bah, Humbug! When he was invited to come to Fred s Christmas party, Scrooge said, I ll dine alone, thank you. This was a rude comment in response to a nice gesture from Fred, his nephew. Are they still in the workhouses? asked Scrooge to the gentleman visitor about the poor people. • 9. How Does Watching Tv Corrupts The Mind When people generally think of television, most may assume it rots the mind. Freelance writer Rachel Krantz not only believes that TV is not useful for your mind, it may kill you, decrease your chances of having kids, ruin the ones you do have, and possibly turn you violent. Could any of this have happened to me as I was binge watching The Simpsons from seasons one to eight during the summer? I initially thought that this show was prone to dumb me down as I did this, but instead it enlightened me through its clever writing. Even with gags as dumb as an old man hurt by a football thrown to his groin, I felt as if no other show was as thoughtful and full of heart as The Simpsons. Despite that Krantz s claims are backed by academic studies and research on television, it should be the least concern for our minds. Television does not rot our minds; it intellectually challenges and aptly adjusts our minds depending on how we use it. The further time a kid spends watching television, the larger their brains grow. That seems great, although apparently this is considered unhealthy for them. A recent Japanese study reveals that as kids between ages 5 through 18 spend, on average, two hours of watching TV per day, certain areas of their brains were growing. The rise in brain volume of these kids was linked to a fall in their verbal IQ. However, the data in this study was not clear if TV watching caused this (Sanders). • 10. Abraham Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address Throughout the semester, the readers have been clashing with each other over which label best fits the author, but they have ignored the minute particulars. These readers are looking at the forest as a broad generalization, and they are missing out on what the forest really is... a bunch of trees. All of these trees are diverse but similar: they are American authors, and the forest is American literature. One might think that this is a flimsy analogy, but it is the most apt and succinct way of explaining this issue. To truly understand any text, one must couch it within historical context; to be valid, an interpretation has to make sense within the historical context, and it has to agree with the minute particulars of the text. If either of these criterion are not met, then the interpretation will not be representative of the text whatsoever. It is imperative that one pay heed to the minute particulars and the text s historical context: otherwise, the text will be vastly misinterpreted and misrepresented in any discussion of the text. The students grossly mischaracterized Abraham Lincoln s Gettysburg Address as a pro abolitionist tract; they also seemed to think that President Lincoln was some divine martyr for anti slavery sentiment, and that he was an exemplary person with regards to American identity. They could not be further from the truth. Historical context is paramount to understanding Lincoln s Gettysburg Address . The text starts off with an appeal to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

There are many different opinions and theories about it. Although there are many accounts of this story, they are all pretty similar in telling the same story. The argument that Foust presents is The reason I believe they are aliens is their green skin and the language they spoke was all unknown and mysterious to us humans. Also, the place filled with perpetual twilight is not a place that is on Earth (Foust n.p.). Even though I do not agree with this theory, it is sensible as to why one would believe this. Without being presented with the facts of the matter, it could seem as if there would be no other explanation other than aliens. However, the green skin is easily explained by illness. The language the children might have seemed strange to the villagers of woolpit, but they could have just been speaking Dutch, which is the language that most Flemish people speak. Since the children were Flemish fleeing from their hometown, they most likely used underground passages and even maybe sewer holes, it is possible the children could have mistaken the places they traveled as being in perpetual twilight. In Foust s essay Green Children Are Aliens , he presents the logical fallacy, Hasty Generalization, which means the author jumps to conclusions based on little evidence. This logical fallacy is used when Foust says The reason I believe they are aliens is their green skin and the language they spoke was all unknown and mysterious to us humans. Foust provides little evidence to prove his theory that the children were aliens, the only evidence he provides is they had green skin and spoke a language the villagers could not understand. There are so many possibilities of what the green skin could have been caused by such as: arsenic poisoning, hypochromic anemia, malnourishment, etc. Just because they had green skin does not mean they were aliens. As a result of this, some countries experience high growth of mega cities and urbanization in general. Wang et al. The growth of cities has been associated to high living standards and high social status of the people. He says that the sorrow he felt at his friend s death was so extreme because he had poured his soul onto the dust, but loving a man as if he would never die who nevertheless had to die. (IV, viii). Augustine s draws the distinction between caritas, as seeking one s final end in God, and cupiditas, as seeking one s final end in that which is other than God. He seems to ask this question of himself The things which are in the world God made, that is, the sky and the earth, the sea, the sun, the moon, the stars, all adornments of the heavens. What about the adornments of the sea? Fish and all swimming creatures. And those of the land? Animals, trees, flying creatures. These are all in the world, God made them. Why should I not love what God has made? Augustine carries on with; all persons want to be happy; and no persons are happy who do not have what they want. From this statement, he proceeds with questioning what a person should obtain to achieve happiness since happiness is a matter of having what one wants in order to be happy. The answer proposed by Augustine is that happiness constitutes something that can be had when it is wanted With the availability these ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 25. The Pompeii Exhibition When I attended the Pompeii exhibition, several antiquities from different sections captured my attention. The first section allows one to experience how a Pompeii citizen would spend the day in the city. From the lively and vibrant markets and shops to relaxing Roman baths, this city had it all. The first object to catch my eye was a water sprout in the shape of a satyr. The water spout was made of two main components. The first element was a circular disc made of bronze and attached to it was the satyr. On the border of the disc laid meticulous designs that closely resembled leaves. As for the satyr, on its head rested a wreath composed of leaves. With high arched eyebrows, frown lines and tight lips, the satyr is a perfect representation ... The actor in question was wearing a floor length short sleeved dress. Even if the dress lacked motifs and intricate designs, the soft creases that ran along the entire dress brings a feminine touch to the overall image. Another factor adding a feminine touch was the detailed hair updo. Both of these soft and delicate features contrast greatly with the face of the character. Unlike the rest of the features, the character s face is harsh. This had to do with the mask that the actor is wearing. With his eyes and mouth wide open, he is projecting strong emotions. During that time period, since men were the only ones allowed to participate in theatrical plays, they were required to wear masks to present a character. This sculpture expresses the importance of activities and shows how far people were willing to push boundaries just for the sake of entertainment. I was impressed by this figure as nowadays play producers look for a certain type of person to play a certain role whereas back in time, men only had to wear mask to portray a ... The first invention to impact the country was the wright brothers invention the airplane in 1903, the second advancement in technology was from Fritz Harber in 1909 with the process of ammonia synthesis, the third and final invention was from Henry Ford in 1913 with the assembly line production process. Views towards ecology on the basis of rights can be separated into deep ecology and shallow ecology , distinguished by the Norwegian philosopher Arne Naess[5]. Quite broadly, shallow ecology dictates that only human beings have rights, other organisms and the environment itself do not. Deep ecology believes that this is not so, and that animals and the natural world do have rights. Shallow ecology is anthropocentric, maintaining that the environment should be handled in whichever way is most beneficial to humankind. No value is placed in the existence of non human animals, other organisms, and the environment, further than their instrumental use to us. In application RFID is the use of radio signals to wirelessly track and identify tags that have been placed on an item. RFID is an emerging technology that is helping transportation companies, retailers, and manufacturers decrease handling times of goods and increase efficiencies at factories, warehouses, and store fronts by tracking objects with greater flexibility and less human involvement. RFID technology is unique and more adaptable than other tracking systems because it does not require a direct line of sight between the scanner and the object being identified. RFID systems can also identify more than one object simultaneously. This flexibility and efficiency adds the type of value that is paramount in just in time principles. This paper will describe RFID technology in detail, and discuss its current uses in security and access control, toll roads, and supply chain management. RFID had its infancy during World War 2 with an expansion of research in radar and radio. As with other products that had an initial military application RFID has progressed over decades to become much more main stream. In the NT, αἷμα may refer to the red fluid within the body s circulatory system; however, it more often has metaphorical connotations. It may denote the death of a person, generally as the result of violence or execution...This metaphorical corollary is especially true when αἷμα is found with ἐκχύννω in 23:35 and 26:28. Thus, in his saying over the cup, Jesus also speaks of his violent death. The reason this has to be clarified is that it could easily lead a person to say the cup is his blood in a literal sense. D. A. Carson in his practical counsel to Pastors said, make sure that your own theology of the Lord s Supper is stable, mature, exegetically grounded, and thought through. • 42. The Omnipotence And Omniscience Of God Essay William Maillis PHL 111 Reaction Paper #2 Professor M. Scott Mayberry 13 December 2016 The Omnipotence and Omniscience of God Does God exist in the universe, or does the universe exist in God? This is the question mankind must answer when we discuss the attributes of God. Many times humanity attempts to place God in the universe and placing universal laws and limitations on God, but God is not bound by the laws of the universe, because the universe exists in God. If it true that God has created everything than how can he be limited by anything? Only God could limit Himself, by His own choice to do so. Thomas V. Morris in his article on the omnipotence of God asks; can God do everything that is logically possible? Who s logic? Are we made in the Image and Likeness of God, or are we attempting to make Him in ours? The difficulty is this: as humans, we are imperfect, with our viewpoints so limited is it God we connect to, or merely our own impression of Him? As imperfect humans, we know only ourselves. We connect to others, but we can never truly go into anybody s mind but our own. Every person exists in a specific manner, completely immersed in his individual awareness, which is egocentric and exclusive. As human beings, we look towards reason and logic to try to understand existence and our place in it. However, there is no human being who is omniscient, so therefore our logic can be flawed, so what is logically possible? In the article; Omniscience and human freedom: a ... Friends, the sixth chapter, details his life with his unnamed concubine among his celibate Manichee comrades. I was taught to capitalize my name, to capitalize the United States and even to capitalize ethnic identifiers like Asian or Latino. Naturally when I wrote my first essay with reference to black people I capitalized the word Black. Yet, when my paper was returned to me I found a note in the margin. The teacher had written, Why did you capitalize Black? I thought I had made a grammatical mistake, so for a period of time, I stopped capitalizing the word. Today, I am writing to my elementary school teacher to tell her she was wrong. I am writing to tell her it is absurd to posit that an entire people do not deserve the respect of a proper noun. It is absurd to encourage the trivialization of a complex and varied race of people, regarding them as equally simplistic as the color of a shoe. Today I am making it clear that Black is distinct from black. I decided to scan for the definition of the lowercase form of black in The Merriam Webster Dictionary: thoroughly sinister or evil; very sad, gloomy or calamitous; characterized by hostility or angry discontent. Immediately I reflected on Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. s words (inspired by Ossie Davis), maybe the English language should be reconstructed so that teachers will not be forced to teach the Negro child sixty ways to despise himself, and thereby perpetuate his false sense of inferiority, and the white child 134 ways to adore himself, and ... Isn t is crazy that a something physical can be utilized within writing to represent something emotional or figurative? Symbolism is the art of using an object or situation to represent an abstract idea. It is when an object, person, or situation have both a literal meaning, and a figurative meaning. Many authors use symbolism to add personality and emotion to their writing. Symbols within pieces of literature make the writing more enjoyable and interesting to read. Emily Bronte efficiently uses symbolism throughout her novel Wuthering Heights to enhance her writing and give her work more richness. Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte takes place in England on two very contrasting estates, Wuthering Heights, owned by the Earnshaw family, and Thrushcross Grange, owned by the Linton family. Both of the estates in this novel can be considered symbolic. Wuthering Heights symbolizes the dark, cold, and gloomy nature of the circumstances around it. They even proclaim in the novel that the name of the estate is descriptive of the atmosphere tumult to which its station is exposed in stormy weather (4). The weather around Wuthering Heights also contributes to its symbolic meaning. His unique worldview has both shocked and puzzled readers since the novella s publication. One of his key characteristics is his tendency towards paradox, especially concerning doubt, shame, and spitefulness. These paradoxes seem to reflect his era, of which he is often critical to the point of exhaustion. Other features of the Underground Man s psyche mirror the nineteenth century as well. For example, his anomie is a result of his life as a clerk in (then) modern Saint Petersburg. The Underground Man s true self may be shrouded by mystery, but it is clear that he is either telling us that he lives in all of us through our experiences with alienation, or that if we were anywhere near as self aware as he is, we would live underground as well. I am a most unpleasant man. set the tone for the rest of the book (707). These are clearly not the words of a person who holds themselves in very high regard. The Underground Man s shame goes beyond self deprecation as a human. At one point, he admits that he had wished to become an insect many times (709). Imagery of pests and vermin continues later on when the Underground Man writes about his propensity for dwelling on the past. He compares himself to a mouse, who retreats to a hole each night to go over the day s shortcomings. The forty year old narrator says of the mouse: For forty years on end it will recall its insult down to the last, most shameful detail; and each time it will add more shameful details of its own, spitefully teasing and irritating itself with its own fantasy (712). The section continues like this for a considerable length. The significance of the passage lies in that not only does the Underground Man compare himself to a mouse, but it is a shame filled mouse that dwells on the past, twisting the truth just as he does in his writings. The psychological root of this shame is defined by the Underground Man on page 709, where he writes, I swear to you, gentlemen, that being overly conscious is a disease, a ...
