Willpower Discussion Questions
Discussion Question Willpower is something that everyone has, it is just that majority of people do not
know how to use it efficiently. It is explained from the beginning of the willpower instinct that people
often set goals then lose control of themselves. Having experienced failure in obtaining my goals in
the past, now that we are tackling willpower challenges I have been more productive toward my goals.
One of the reasons that we tell ourselves that we can t achieve our goals, is because of the many
changes that we must make in ourselves and it seems impossible. I can build on this because I have
told myself that this will never work but I have had more success now than I have before. When you

Reading Fluency and Its Effect on Reading Comprehension
Reading Fluency and its Effect on Reading Comprehension
Topic Selection As an elementary teacher, I have often thought reading fluency plays a large role in a
child s reading development. Few reading programs give fluency the recognition it deserves. Reading
fluency has been a prominent and reliable benchmark for me, even when students have comprehension
difficulties. Once fluency is assessed, the results were used to place students in their reading ability
group. Often times, the fluent readers were placed in the high ability reading groups. In the past, our
district used a reading program that gave very little focus to reading fluency and few strategies for
improvement. It assessed fluency based on rate and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Reader s theater brings a new, more exciting approach to repeated practice. Like repeated reading,
reader s theater focuses on all three elements of reading fluency.
Reader s theater requires students to reread, memorize, and perform the text, which are key
components to improving fluency. Adding dramatic performance to a student s reading experience will
positively affect the student s expression, or prosody, a key component to reading fluency (Nathan
Stanovich, 2001). Modeling fluency is essential so students can better understand what reading
fluency sounds like. Proper modeling focuses on accuracy, rate, phrasing, and prosody (Worthly
Broaddus, 2001). Evanchan (2010) suggested proper modeling gives students exposure to vocabulary
above their independent reading level. Modeling allows students to be engaged with text they may
wrestle with independently, and comprehension is also enhanced (Worthly Broaddus, 2001). The
student s engagement and evidence of comprehension suggests students listening comprehension level
is at a higher level than their independent reading levels (Evanchan, 2010).
How does reading fluency affect reading comprehension? There are five essential components to
reading. They are phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension. Evanchan
(2010), referred to the components as links in a chain, and comprehension is the link that secures the
chain; however, if one of the four

The Enuma Elin Creation Theth Of The Enlonian Creation Myth
The Enuma Elish is the Babylonian Creation Myth. Written on seven stone tablets, the poem describes
the beginning of the universe as a separating of water from Chaos. Essentially, the universe begins in a
chaos of swirling waters until, with time, the waters separate into Apsu and Tiamat. In response to this
myth, the first book of Genesis was written during the Babylonian Exile. Genesis 1 introduces how
God created the world in six days and rested on the seventh. In addition to this creation story, there
were another one written centuries before and it was written in Genesis two and three. This story,
famously described as The Fall of Man shows how God created the creatures of the earth and humans
that have dominion over them. It ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
God created the sky and the waters like Marduk did as he split Tiamat into sky and land, but it is
important to note that God did this out of love and Marduk created out of vengeance. (Genesis 1:6 7,
Enuma Elish IV:134 146). From the third day forward the order of creation was quite similar. A reader
can assume that the order might infer that the response was not of what order creation, but who the
creator is and why he made creation into existence.
The God in Genesis, through his peaceful speaking into the creation of the world and humanity, can be
seen as humble, peaceful, and is mysterious. In Enuma Elish, the chaos and violence noted can make
the reader infer that the gods are all powerful and they have to make creation right, but from the
spoken mouth of God, all creation was good. On sixth generation of creation the Enuma Elish explains
that they will make man out of gruesome blood and bones from a casualty of war the sixth generation

creation story says that God made man out of the dust of the ground with the breath of God and the

Religion In The Decameron
Religion
Boccaccio also infused The Decameron with his opinions on the Catholic church, which even at that
time was Italy s primary religious institution. Catholicism may have been popular, but Boccaccio was
very blatant in showing that he did not approve of the Church s conduct. In The Decameron, religion
was practiced by fools, the church was a breeding ground for mischief, and marriage was a transaction
devoid of meaning.
Perhaps the most foolish characters readers could come across in The Decameron were Friar Alberto
and Monna Lisetta. Boccaccio masterfully parodied the Church by introducing Friar Alberto as a
former con man who moved to Venice and became a priest: already, Boccaccio has criticized the
vetting process for potential religious officials. Monna Lisetta, the next character introduced, is a vain,
airheaded devotee of the angel Gabriel. By having these silly characters meet in a religious setting,
Boccaccio mocked the Catholics of his day, especially once Friar Alberto used his credibility as a man
of God to trick the gullible Monna Lisetta into having sex with Gabriel, who would be possessing the
friar s own body. Boccaccio could hardly be more derisive toward the Church than with this tragic
story.
But Friar Alberto and Monna Lisetta were not Boccaccio s only example of mischief that had its roots
in a church: the wife of Pietro di Vinciolo essentially asked a friend to arrange extramarital liaisons for
her in exchange for a piece of jerky. According

Psychology of the Unconscious
Introduction Through the different processes of social attachment and detachment, individuals are
shaped and influenced because of the way people and entities become connected in our shared worlds
(Redman, 2008a, p. 181). These processes are important mechanisms by which collective worlds and
the individuals who reside in these worlds are created (Redman, 2008b, p. 4). From a psychoanalytic
point of view, sociologists suggest that these social attachments happen through processes that are, to
some extent, unconscious (The Open University, 2014a). These processes, which range from thoughts
and feelings to impulses and emotional textures, are not easily available to conscious reflection.
However, the effects of unconscious activity can be located in conscious thought and witnessed in
human interactions (Redman and Whitehouse Hart, 2008, p. 60). These unconscious processes
mediate our personal awareness of social worlds by translating the individuals and entities we
encounter in the outer world into forms that resonate with internal experiences, preoccupations,
fantasies and senses of self other relationships (Chodorow, 1999, cited in Redman, 2008a, p. 177).
This assignment will explore how social worlds are mediated by unconscious processes using research
surveillance from the television programme Big Brother , the Northern Ireland Troubles and the case
of Victoria Climbié. Furthermore, it will outline some potential criticisms of this claim. Transference,

Understanding Cultural Communication
Language is a communication method that makes everything easy to communicate with others. The
language barrier is the biggest challenge and hurdle of most people whom their English is a second
language. Growing up in a family with parents that only speak another language could be viewed very
similarly to a double edged sword. This challenge with society forces people to learn the English
language. Although there a lot of difficulties with the second language, eventually the transition
between both languages would become easier by time and more practice. Starting to be able to
comprehend the English language is the best way overcomes this barrier. Although these challenges
were not easy to overcome, persistence, dedication and hard work would facilitate everything. Despite
the fact that language is considered the biggest barrier, culture comes as a second harder barrier in
means of communication. Effective communication with people of different cultures is especially
challenging. Culture on the other hand, provides people with ways of thinking, seeing and hearing
and, then understands the things around. Thus, the same word can mean different things to people
from different cultures, even when they talk the same language. Stella Ting Toomey describes how
culture involves with cultural understanding where ach culture has its own rules about proper behavior
which affect verbal and nonverbal communication. How close the people stand to each

Nato s Justification Of The Security Council
NATO s 11 week bombing campaign against the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia (FRY) in March
1999 was a challenge in the history of the North Atlantic alliance. For the first time, NATO launched
an armed intervention outside its borders in order to avert a humanitarian crisis (Solana 1999: 114).
The bombing campaign was intended to stop Belgrade s repression of Kosovo s Albanian population
and to oblige the Milosevic regime to accept NATO s demands regarding the future political status of
Kosovo (Wippman 2001: 129).
NATO s decision to intervene in Kosovo without the authorization of the Security Council raised
doubts in the international arena among human rights activists about the legitimacy of the operation.
This essay will argue that NATO s intervention in Kosovo was legitimate because it was both legal
and just. In so doing, this essay will start by carefully reading the U.N. Charter provisions that permit
the use of force on limited grounds in order to set the legal conditions for intervention (Mertus 2000:
1751). NATO s legitimacy in Kosovo will be scrutinized focusing on the emerging body of
international law, which permits intervention for humanitarian purposes. Likewise, a just war analysis
will be applied to examine the morality of the decision to wage war, and the morality of the means and
methods by which the war was conducted (Schroeder 2004: 180). The essay will eventually conclude
that humanitarian intervention is now legal and widely accepted by most states

Hip Hop s Effect on American Culture Essay

It began in the ?70s with funky beats resonating at house parties, at basement parties, and the streets of
New York (Fernando, 1994.)
In the early ?70s, a Jamaican d.j. known as Kool Herc moved from Kingston to NY?s West Bronx. He
attempted to incorporate his Jamaican style of dj, which involved reciting improvised rhymes over the
dub versions of his reggae records. Unfortunately New Yorkers were not into reggae at this time.
Because of this, he adapted his style by chanting over instrumental percussion sections of the day?s
popular songs. Since these breaks were relatively short, he learned to extend them indefinitely by
using an audio mixer and two identical records in which he continuously replaced the desires segment.
In those early days, young partygoers initially recited popular phrases and used the slang of the day.
This would usually evoke a response from the crowd, who began to call out their own names and
slogans. As this culture evolved, the party shouts became more elaborate as the dj, in an effort to be
different, began to incorporate little rhymes. It was not long before people began drawing upon
outdated dozens and schoolyard rhymes. Many would add their own twist and customize these rhymes
to make them suitable for the party environment (George, 1998).
At that time it was not yet known as ?rap? but called emceeing. As the interest in rap music grew, so
did its message. Rap caught on because

The Joker In The Clown Prince Of Crime
The Joker is often understood as Batman s antithesis, as the yang to his yin, as the agent of chaos that
threatens his need for order. Thus, while they function as opposites, they are also intrinsically tied to
each other. In the case of the Clown Prince of Crime, Batman s true nemesis, this Trickster like quality
is relevant. The Joker is a particular kind of commentary on Batman, one that essentially derives from
the characters antithetical logics (order vs chaos). The Joker is not only a counter to Batman, but a
satirical figure in which a subversive attitude towards contemporary society is realized. In this role,
the Joker figure s origin and history is clearly referenced. The Jokers a fool, prankster, jester, trickster,
clown; the derivations of the fool archetype are many, but joining them together is a sense of mischief
and a ridicule of authority. In the many incarnations of the Joker, these characteristics vary
considerably in both degree and force, making the character quite versatile. There is, for example, a
significant difference in tone between Cesar Romero s comic Joker of the campy 1960s Batman
television series and film, and Heath Ledger s portrayal of a sardonic psychopath in The Dark Night.
Also, like the medieval fool, the Joker wears motley, bright colored ... Show more content on

which wisdom and folly confront each other, thus allowing for sustained irony. This can only mean
that irony takes on particular significance because the Joker is a very tragic and violent figure at a
psychological level, but he wears the face of comedy. It is this dialectic between these two traits, the
psychological and the superficial, that we find the Joker s potential as a vehicle for

is just school and my business. I will mention later on what this business consists of. Also, in this
point of my life I also do stuff beside school and my business. For example, I like to hangout with my
cousins and family on weekends and spend quality time with my family during the week. We take
family trips out of state every year and also do fun activities around the city.
With that being said, my living status is that I m still living with my parents and i m not planning to
move out anytime soon. It really doesn t affect me at all living their, I enjoy being with my family I
don t know what i ll do if I ever move out like around this age. I still feel like I need a lot of more time

sometimes girls want to move out as soon as they hit 18. Why would they want to leave their family?

Baroque Movement And Religion
This article explores the production of religious images by the Baroque movement as a mass
production of icons and superimposing images. Although, this piece of work focuses mainly on this art
movement and is effects on Mexican culture, it also describes how the appropriation of certain
symbols can influence culture, religion, and politics of other societies.
The sculptures, paintings, and churches influenced by the Baroque period are described as symbols
that can evoke magic and transcendence which might corroborate to the perception that the Roman
Catholic Church used the Baroque glamour to appeal all the senses of the society in contact with it.
The holy objects used by the church were designed to be very functional and ornamental, in order to
impress and touch the feelings of its followers.
The author of this publication, Renee De La Torre, addresses with confidence how the aspects of
baroque art were used by the Catholic Church to create icons that could influence the spread of the
Catholic reformation. De La Torre has a Master s degree in Communication Studies from ITESO, a
PhD in Social Sciences, and is specialized in Social Anthropology.
Baroque is addressed objectively but also in a lot of detail in this reference entry. From the definition
to the different aspects of the movement in Europe, this encyclopedia brings the historical background
and general characteristics of baroque art that can be used as a foundation for arguments concerning

Analysis Of The Movie I Chose Silver Linings Playbook
The analysis of the movie I chose was Silver Linings Playbook. This movie was a revamping of the
publication Silver Linings Playbook by Matthew Quick. Patrick, known as Pat throughout the movie,
Solatano, Jr. is portrayed by Bradley Cooper. Although it is unclear what is different about Pat in the
very beginning, the story soon unravels his skeletons in the closet. The opening scene starts as Pat is
being released from the Karel psychiatric facility in Baltimore. Pat was institutionalized after he
walked in on his wife and the history teacher having an affair in the shower, blacked out, and beat the
man nearly to death. He is ordered to attend therapy as part of his plea bargain and release deal. Even
though medication is almost required to treat his condition, Pat decides it is better to change his
outlook on life and find the silver linings, he even shouts his motto excelsior meaning always upward
(Excelsior dictionary definition). To me this meant, finding the positive in every negative situation.
However, even though it sounds good on the surface, it can also be used as a crutch to fuel self
delusion. Pat ends up being set up on a dinner date in order to get over the fact that his wife has since
moved. After the dinner date, Pat finds himself spending much time with Tiffany, another main
character with a mental illness, who he enters a dance competition with and ends up falling for. This
analysis will cover the symptoms/diagnosis, nature versus nurture,

The Adlerian Theory focuses on how the person s perception of the past and his or her interpretation
of early events have a continuing influence. Alder believed that biological and physiological factors
provided probabilities for future growth but that, the self , with creative power as part of its inner
nature, is the important intervening variable (Selgiman Reichenberg, 2010, p. 63). Behavior is
purposeful and goal directed when using Adlerian theory. Adler s theory focuses on inferiority
feelings, which he sees as a normal condition for all people and as a source of all human striving.
Inferiority can be the wellspring of creativity. Alder believes this is what motivates us to strive for
mastery, superiority, and completion. From an Adlerian perspective, human behavior is not determined
solely by heredity and the environment. Instead, we have the capacity to interpret, influence, and
create events. Alder asserts that what we were born with is not as important as what we choose to do
with the abilities and limitations we possess. According to Adler, we must master three universal life
tasks: building friendships, establishing intimacy, and contributing to society (Corey, 2005, p.99).
These life tasks are so fundamental to human living that dysfunction in any one of them is often an
indicator of a psychological disorder (American Psychiatric Association, 2000). According to Stein

Proposition 2 Argumentative Analysis
Proposition 2 explains that what someone does and how others view the actions one does in
coordination with one another is closely tied to identities (Christiansen, 1999). Furthermore,
Proposition 2 states that language, verbal or nonverbal, is an important influence on identities because
one learns self awareness which then impacts how that person acts around others due to societal cues.
For example, a child learns that a behavior is not acceptable due to language spoken to them through
someone else s facial expressions, like a frown, or direct communication between the child and
someone else. People learn how to act and how to set their goals in life by the experience of doing
things that others will approve or disapprove of. 6. Discuss and provide an example of Proposition 3
and 4 from the Christiansen article. Proposition 3 explains that identities can impact someone s
behavior and view on his or her life depending on how that person views an event that occurred in his

The Nazi Regime Essay
The Nazi Regime
In this essay I will be analyzing the statement; The most important reason why there was little
opposition towards the Nazi regime was because of its use of propaganda. In order to do this I will
explain how the Nazis actions and the events leading up to the war prevented opposition.
During the pre ww2 era and particularly in the 1930s Hitler focused a lot of his attention on the
propaganda surrounding himself and the policies of his Nazi party. A massive propaganda campaign
was launched which aimed to convince the German people that all the Nazis did was right and good.
The man behind this campaign was Josef Goebbles, a vain, ambitious, anti Semitic womanizer.
Geobbles ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Of course, Hitler seized on this event and claimed that a bolshevist revolution was underway in
Germany and that communist were attempting to seize power.
The church was also involved in opposing Nazi regimes. An organization called the confessing church
was formed. It spoke out against Nazism, how it infiltrated the church and the Nazi anti Semitic
policies. Members of the Confessing Church also helped approximately 2000 Jews escape to freedom.
Probably one of the most significant and blatant acts of opposition towards Nazism occurred during
the latter stages of the war in July 1944 when a bomb plot executed by members of the German army
took place. The intent was to kill Hitler and hopefully end his regime, however the plan failed and
Hitler survived despite badly injuring his right arm. The plan was nicknamed the Stauffenberg bomb
plot.
Although the opposition instances mentioned caused the Nazis some concern, Goebbles and his Nazi
propaganda machine managed to overcome them. They did this by taking control of the medial and
cultural aspects of Germany to win over the German people. They also manipulated events (e.g. the
Reichstag fire) using propaganda to abolish any opponents who were seen as a threat towards the Nazi
power struggle. Goebbles fought for control of newspaper companies and radio stations and hundreds
of pro Nazi films were made. Germany

Charlotte Bronte created Jane Eyre, a revolutionary novel that since first released in 1847 and ever
since then still remains relevant despite being a classic piece of literature. The novel persistently not
only known for its new ideas, such as a relatable female protagonist, and defying the gender
constraints placed on women during that time period, but for its extensive use of symbolism
throughout the novel. Symbolism occurs when seemingly meaningless words and events lead to a
deeper meaning. The splitting of the chestnut tree happens to symbolize and foreshadow an upcoming
break in Jane and Rochester s relationship, and while their relationship faces hardships, and may never
be the the same, somehow their relationship stays intact. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Jane views water to be a distancing from passion and emotion. The character St. John Rivers has been
compared to and placed near water and cold elements many times throughout the novel. The most
prominent being that his name. The first time Jane views him, she says, I have never seen that
handsome face of his look more like chiseled marble as he put aside his snow wet hair from his
forehead. When he is placed by the fire he s described as being gloomy and out of place, when placed
near the fire. Because of Rivers aversion to heat and him being cold, he does not seem suitable nor
compatible for Jane since she is full of warmth and passion and he seems to be out of place when near
the fire. When Jane spoke of how he would be as a husband, she says, He has no more a husbands
heart for me than that frowning giant of a rock, down which the stream is frothing over yonder gorge.
she uses water imagery to express his feelings. Moreover Jane being a very passionate person sees the
absence of passion and emotion to be as bad as death itself.
Charlotte Bronte s use of symbolism helps give the reader an in depth understanding into what the
characters in Jane Eyre are thinking and feeling. As a result the reader connects with the characters on
a deeper level. Charlotte Bronte created a masterpiece in writing this novel. One of the greatest
qualities she imbued into this book happens to be its use of repeated symbolism and themes, which
came together and created one unified

Financial Analysis Of The Performance Of Burberry
Introduction
In this assignment, I have chosen Burberry as the company to report. Burberry is one of the global
luxury brand leader with a long history. It operates in three regions, Asia Pacific, Europe , Middle
East, India and Africa (EMEIA) and Americas. I am interested in the firm s performance in recent
years. I am going to measure and analysis the performance of the corporate through Annual report
2015/16 and 2016/17 which published on 06 06 16 and 06 06 17 respectively.
Overview
According to the financial statement, during 2015 2017, Burberry were making profit in the three year
however the firm had a drop in the net profit constantly. In 2015, the profit for the year was 341.1m, it
was down by 7.77% to 314.6m in 2016 and it ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In 2017, the firm had a higher percentage of cost of sales in term of revenue than 2016, the cost of
sales was 30.11% which was higher than 2016 for 0.21%, that means the firm s gross margin in 2017
(69.89%) will also lower than the gross margin in 2016 for 0.21%. Burberry had a higher net
operating expenses in 2017. The net operating expenses was 55.63% which was higher than 2016 for
1.56%, that also lower the operating margin, therefore the operating margin for the firm has decreased
from 16.02% to 14.26% ( 1.76%).
The 9.9m put option liability finance income in 2016 turn to 3.2m finance charge, so the net finance
income dropped for 88.19% to 0.5m. This lead to a 5% decline in profit before tax from 415.6m to
394.8m. Moreover for the profit for the year, Burberry had a drop of 8.55% to 287.7m from 314.6m.
The trend of the firm is decreasing in related to the three financial years. The reason of the decline can
be due to the increase of the geopolitical concern in the Middle East and Russia and Uncertainty in
Eurozone. These factors have any huge negative impact on the performance of the luxury sector.

Foreshadowing The Necklace
In the Necklace written by Guy de Maupassant, the plot of the story was emphasized on the physical
action, wanderings and the problems encountered by the main character. From the beginning, although
her name was not being introduced for long until the middle of the story we can observe that the story
grows out of the main character, Mathilde, who was being introduced about her back story, her
character, her unhappiness with her mediocre life. Despite the fact that she lives in comfortable home
with her loving husband, she is so unsatisfied and demanding that she wants to live in illusory world
where her actual life does not match the ideal life she has in her head. The plot also depends on chance
that intertwine with the main character s action when she lost the necklace that she lends from
Madame Forstier. The event turned out making the Loisels live a life of crippling poverty in a really
shabby apartment. Moreover, everything in the story seems relevant and connected with each other in
a proper way making the storyline organized and easy to understand. In middle of the story, we can

The Health Care System Of Ontario
Introduction
The health care system in Ontario has been subjected to a lot of criticism and investigation since its
introduction midway through the twentieth century. In the past decade, there has been a significant
increase in the demand of healthcare, due to increase in the population from immigration and also, an
increase in the chronic diseases among the residents of Ontario, which in turn has affected the overall
quality of the provision of healthcare. Due to its availability to wide range of people it has become
evident that the health care system has been restricted by incorporation of various strict time
consuming policies, which may cause the current healthcare system to be unsustainable in the future.
Therefore, healthcare industry has added resources to accommodate increase in demands and the
needs of the Ontarians, but this does not eliminate the problem that Ontario lacks a system wide and
sustained approach to improve quality of primary healthcare, which will be further discussed in the
paper.
Historical Background
According to the Constitutional Act of 1867, it was the responsibility of the province to publically
establish and maintain hospitals, asylums, charities and charitable institutions. Federal government
took control of the public health care from 1867 1919 after which, healthcare in Canada became a
completely private sector. People who needed health care were expected to pay for the services
themselves. The supply of medical services was minimal

Rhapsody In Blue Essay
Rhapsody In Blue
George Gershwin s Rhapsody in Blue is one of those timeless classics that is instantly recognizable to
many people s ears today, even ninety years after it was first introduced to the world. It is a piece that
has found its way into contemporary movies and advertisements, making it likely as recognizable as
Chopin s Funeral March or Beethoven s Fifth Symphony. But unlike these two pieces of iconic
classical music, Rhapsody in Blue resists classification. 1 In it are elements of classical music, blues
and jazz, making it at once Gershwin s most famous piece but also possibly his least understood
composition. 2 Indeed, while Rhapsody became a popular hit in the ... Show more content on

with even Leonard Bernstein writing for The Atlantic in 1955:

Bullying In America Essay
More than obesity and health care is wrong with America. Not only does the health care system warp
people s mind, but it creates an issue with the way children are taught and how they learn. A large
stance has already changed many people s lives bullying. Children bully for many reasons including
sexual orientation, weight, religious/philosophical beliefs, and some reasons unknown to all. Children
bullied for their weight often times feel insecure and worthless about their bodies scaring them in the
process of always wanting to be in the same physical state and leading more obese children to lead

What Is Prejudice In Pride And Prejudice Essay
Pride is the feeling of pleasure and satisfaction that you get because you or people connected with you
have done or got something good; prejudice is an unreasonable dislike of or preference for others.
Pride and Prejudice is one of the most famous love stories. As I barely see a love story with a
derogatory title; it motivates me to start reading this book.
The book cover draws my attention. It is a portrait of a young, poker faced woman. When I open the
book, I find the words are packed and the book is thick. Hence, my first impression of this book is a
monotonous and classic love story with anticipated ending.

Gay Parent Adoption And Same Sex Adoption
Gay parent adoption or same sex adoption refers to the adoption of children by individuals who prefer
romantic partners of the same sex gays and lesbians. Same sex adoption is portrayed by the media as
being a potentially good thing but with potentially detrimental side effects, most notably for the
adopted children. This type of adoption is often made to look as if it might well be done but perhaps
should not be for the sake of the children involved. With groups such as the religious right,
fundamentalist Christian denominations, and private religiously affiliated adoption agencies backing
the opposition to adoption by gays and lesbians and, on the other side, the American Civil Liberties
Union, the Human Rights Campaign, and various LGBT (lesbian gay bisexual transgender) friendly
groups making up the proponents, the battle over same sex adoption is well defined and entrenched in
a deep and long standing debate. That battle begins with the media and its portrayal of gay parent
adoptions as against the agencies and advocacy groups and their perspectives on placing children in
the homes and care of homosexual individuals.
Adoption remained for a long time a rather homogeneous action, with the placement of children in the
homes of middle class, married couples. Over the course of the last three decades, adoption went
through a metamorphosis, from being merely a source for married, middle class couples to create
families to being a pathway for a number of diverse and

The Islam Means Peace Or Submission
Research Paper Rough Draft Islam means peace or submission. The followers of islam are called
Muslims. Muslims believe that Allah (God) is the only God, is is a monotheistic religion. They also
believe that Allah is beyond human comprehension, and we should never try to draw Allah as a being
but instead beautiful, yet complicated patterns. Muslims also believe that Allah cannot become human,
it is logically impossible, and that there were five prophets who were messengers of him, Noah,
Abraham, Moses, Jesus, and Muhammad. Prophet Muhammed was greatly important to Islam. He is
believed to be the final prophet, and he showed people the way they should live. One day in Makkah,
heavy rain damaged the walls of Kaaba. The black stone fell out the place, and people fell out over
who should put it back. Prophet Muhammad decided on a team effort. The Islamic place of worship is
the Mosque. Muslims do not have priests or any specific leaders, anyone is open to a sermon. Islam is
now becoming increasingly more popular; it is the second largest world religion after Christianity.
Some Muslims believe everyone in the world was born Muslim and anyone who becomes Muslim
does not convert but reverts. Islam also has the five pillars which are extremely important to Muslims.

A Lady in a Machine-Shop Essay
In A Lady in a Machine Shop, Susan Bivin Aller uses creativity, determination, and confidence to

to Manchester, New Hampshire when she was at a young age. At the age of twelve, Knight witnessed
a mill worker injured by a steel tipped shuttle. This motivated her to create a safety mechanism, her
first invention, to prevent any further injuries in cotton mills.
Knight s mind was built with creativeness and that helped her succeed. As Knight grew up with her

Aller also used statistics that demonstrated determination in Knight. At the paper bag company that

a wooden model and made thousands of trial bags in the factory? to help her. Before she had time to
register a patent for the paper bag, a man named Charles F. Annan ?had been spying?he had it copied?

past inventions. Because of Knight?s determination, she tried her best to win her side. After all she

willpower and courage. When Knight died, ?she held patents for twenty two inventions and?sixty
more?? Even though Knight invented a wide range of items, many more were waiting to have a patent,
but never had the chance.
Lastly, the most important thing that led Knight to success was confidence in herself. Knight had self

Examples Of Rite Of Passage In Greasy Lake
Rite of Passage
Greasy Lake by T.C. Boyle is a tale of one young man s quest for the rich scent of possibility on the
breeze. It was a time in a man s life when there was an almost palpable sense of destiny, as if
something was about to happen, like a rite of passage that will thrust him into adulthood or cement his
badness forever. The story opens with our narrator on a night of debauchery with his friends drinking,
eating, and cruising the streets as he had done so many times in the past. What he found on that night
of violence and mayhem would force him to look at himself hard. This is a story of one man s journey
from boyhood to maturity.

The tension this young man feels comes from his internal struggle to come to terms with what he is
and what he is destined to become. The emphasis on his badness suggests that he is insecure in
himself. The thorough thrashing he receives from Greasy Character is representational of the lack of

The narrator is both protagonist and antagonist because the main conflict is an internal one. The bad

Essay on The Effects of Television Violence on Children
The Effects of Television Violence on Children
According to the Article ?Violence on Television? published by the American Psychological
Association at the website http://www.apa.org/pubinfo/violence.html, ?violent programs on television
lead to aggressive behavior by children and teenagers who watch those programs.? That s the word
from a 1982 report by the National Institute of Mental Health, a report that confirmed and extended an

American Psychological Association passed a resolution in February 1985 informing broadcasters and

The researchers noticed real differences between the kids who watched the violent shows and those
who watched nonviolent ones. According to Aletha Huston, Ph.D., ?children who watch the violent
shows, even just funny cartoons, were more likely to hit out at their playmates, argue, disobey class
rules, leave tasks unfinished, and were less willing to wait for things than those who watched the
nonviolent programs.? Findings from the laboratory are further supported by field studies, which have
shown the long range effects of televised violence. Leonard Eron, Ph.D., and his associates at the
University of Illinois, found that children who watched many hours of TV violence when they were in
elementary school tended to also show a ?higher level of aggressive behavior? when they became
teenagers. By observing these youngsters until they were 30 years old, Dr. Eron found that the ones
who ?had watched a lot of TV when they were eight years old were more likely to be arrested and
prosecuted for criminal acts as adults?.
Television does influence children, however parents have tremendous power to moderate that
influence. Because there is a great deal of violence in both adult and children s programming, just
limiting the number of hours children watch television will probably

can have his independence while getting professional care from home. ethical dilemmas are
commonplace, complex, and require critical thinking skills that are honed through practice, and
practice, and more practice. Airth Kindree, N. M., Kirk horn, L. C. (2016).
Emilio S. also seeks medical treatment from a traditional doctor, and this may present some issues

African American Culture In Ralph Ellison s The Invisible Man
American culture had already dominated across the nation by the 1930 s; however, the cherished
traditions of African Americans also began to flourish through the development of their remarkable
presence in the city of Harlem, New York. Ralph Ellison utilizes his perspective on this rise of African
American culture to depict American society during this era, in his 1952 novel, The Invisible Man. His
view on the time is comprised of the prejudice actions against African Americans and the prevalence
of segregation between blacks and whites. Subsequently, Ellison depicts the effects of these actions in
the African American society of Harlem, New York through symbolic features, in order to display how
black stereotypes were a part of the mindset of the typical white American.
Initially, Ellison uses the sambo doll to symbolize these black stereotypes and constant degrading
power of prejudice among the African American societies in the Unites States during the 1930 s. The
sambo doll is mentioned in the instance in which the narrator is looking at a items being sold by a man
he knows, Clifton. Until he takes a closer look at the doll, he doesn t realize its intended purpose and
listens to the seller say, shake him, shake him, you cannot break him For he s Sambo, the dancing,
Sambo, the prancing, Sambo, the entrancing, Sambo Boogie Woogie paper doll. And all for twenty
five cents, the quarter part of a dollar... Ladies and gentlemen, he ll bring you joy, step up and meet
him, Sambo the... (Ellison 358). Through this symbol, Ellison shows how African Americans are just
like puppet dolls used to entertain others, but can be controlled in one way or another, as they are
essentially powerless compared to the whites. The term sambo , in specific, is used as a degrading
term towards African American individuals since the time of slavery, so its reuse during this era gives
the term an even more disheartening connotation. Even today, the use of Sambo Art is a dominant
style of memorabilia in Harvard s Image of the Black in Western Art Archive . This archive contains
around 26,000 images of the blacks in western times; however, gives off a racist impression as the
images they are a part of, are lower quality forms of art

Self-Obsessive Nature Of The Millennial Generation
Millennials are the most intriguing generation the country of the United States has ever seen. The GI
Generation were forced to deal with the First World War where they became the Lost Generation
whose morals, including God, family, life and death, were flipped on their heads. The Greatest
Generation had the responsibility of facing Nazis and dealing with the post traumatic stress disorder.
The Baby Boomers were the post world war generations who introduced credit and were the first TV
generation. Generation X dealt with Civil Rights Movement and a rapid increase in divorce amongst
parents creating trauma for children. However, Millennials seem to deal with several issues that
previous generations of the past as well as the scrutiny of previous generations alongside threats like
terrorism and the threat of infringement on privacy or how self obsessed we are by our social media
use. However, despite things being much harder in the millennial generation, such as education, we
are viewed as weak.
The self obsessive nature of my generation comes from the use of social media and how we crave the
liking and approval of others through our pictures or posts. Since 2005 the emergence of social media
sites such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, or VSCO has allowed this generation to share their lives in
a glorified fashion in order to gain followers and attention from likers. However, this creates an issue
for our generation as the more we glorify the events in our life the more disappointing life is. For
instance, say you go to a Washington Nationals game and you send out an amazing selfie to post for
Instagram with the caption reading, Had an amazing day with my fam!, but the question is...did you
really? Based off of most peoples posts now a days it seems like their lives are just splendid. However,
life is not as hyped up as it is on social media
which will set everyone up for disappointment. That to me is the worst issue that Millennials face is
that they try to live up to a standard of life that doesn t exist.
The other issue my generation experiences is known as the Sins of the Father. The previous
generations never dealt with their own issues so they push it on to the younger generation to fix the
issue. The

Reading Fluency and Its Effect on Reading Comprehension Reading Fluency and its Effect on Reading Comprehension Topic Selection As an elementary teacher, I have often thought reading fluency plays a large role in a child s reading development. Few reading programs give fluency the recognition it deserves. Reading fluency has been a prominent and reliable benchmark for me, even when students have comprehension difficulties. Once fluency is assessed, the results were used to place students in their reading ability group. Often times, the fluent readers were placed in the high ability reading groups. In the past, our district used a reading program that gave very little focus to reading fluency and few strategies for improvement. It assessed fluency based on rate and ... Like repeated reading, reader s theater focuses on all three elements of reading fluency. Reader s theater requires students to reread, memorize, and perform the text, which are key components to improving fluency. Adding dramatic performance to a student s reading experience will positively affect the student s expression, or prosody, a key component to reading fluency (Nathan Stanovich, 2001). Modeling fluency is essential so students can better understand what reading fluency sounds like. Proper modeling focuses on accuracy, rate, phrasing, and prosody (Worthly Broaddus, 2001). Evanchan (2010) suggested proper modeling gives students exposure to vocabulary above their independent reading level. Modeling allows students to be engaged with text they may wrestle with independently, and comprehension is also enhanced (Worthly Broaddus, 2001). The student s engagement and evidence of comprehension suggests students listening comprehension level is at a higher level than their independent reading levels (Evanchan, 2010). How does reading fluency affect reading comprehension? There are five essential components to reading. They are phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension. Written on seven stone tablets, the poem describes the beginning of the universe as a separating of water from Chaos. Essentially, the universe begins in a chaos of swirling waters until, with time, the waters separate into Apsu and Tiamat. In response to this myth, the first book of Genesis was written during the Babylonian Exile. Genesis 1 introduces how God created the world in six days and rested on the seventh. A reader can assume that the order might infer that the response was not of what order creation, but who the creator is and why he made creation into existence. The God in Genesis, through his peaceful speaking into the creation of the world and humanity, can be seen as humble, peaceful, and is mysterious. • 6. Religion In The Decameron Religion Boccaccio also infused The Decameron with his opinions on the Catholic church, which even at that time was Italy s primary religious institution. Catholicism may have been popular, but Boccaccio was very blatant in showing that he did not approve of the Church s conduct. In The Decameron, religion was practiced by fools, the church was a breeding ground for mischief, and marriage was a transaction devoid of meaning. Perhaps the most foolish characters readers could come across in The Decameron were Friar Alberto and Monna Lisetta. Boccaccio masterfully parodied the Church by introducing Friar Alberto as a former con man who moved to Venice and became a priest: already, Boccaccio has criticized the vetting process for potential religious officials. Monna Lisetta, the next character introduced, is a vain, airheaded devotee of the angel Gabriel. By having these silly characters meet in a religious setting, Boccaccio mocked the Catholics of his day, especially once Friar Alberto used his credibility as a man of God to trick the gullible Monna Lisetta into having sex with Gabriel, who would be possessing the friar s own body. Boccaccio could hardly be more derisive toward the Church than with this tragic story. But Friar Alberto and Monna Lisetta were not Boccaccio s only example of mischief that had its roots in a church: the wife of Pietro di Vinciolo essentially asked a friend to arrange extramarital liaisons for her in exchange for a piece of jerky. • 7. Psychology of the Unconscious Introduction Through the different processes of social attachment and detachment, individuals are shaped and influenced because of the way people and entities become connected in our shared worlds (Redman, 2008a, p. 181). These processes are important mechanisms by which collective worlds and the individuals who reside in these worlds are created (Redman, 2008b, p. 4). From a psychoanalytic point of view, sociologists suggest that these social attachments happen through processes that are, to some extent, unconscious (The Open University, 2014a). These processes, which range from thoughts and feelings to impulses and emotional textures, are not easily available to conscious reflection. However, the effects of unconscious activity can be located in conscious thought and witnessed in human interactions (Redman and Whitehouse Hart, 2008, p. 60). These unconscious processes mediate our personal awareness of social worlds by translating the individuals and entities we encounter in the outer world into forms that resonate with internal experiences, preoccupations, fantasies and senses of self other relationships (Chodorow, 1999, cited in Redman, 2008a, p. 177). This assignment will explore how social worlds are mediated by unconscious processes using research surveillance from the television programme Big Brother , the Northern Ireland Troubles and the case of Victoria Climbié. • 10. Nato s Justification Of The Security Council NATO s 11 week bombing campaign against the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia (FRY) in March 1999 was a challenge in the history of the North Atlantic alliance. For the first time, NATO launched an armed intervention outside its borders in order to avert a humanitarian crisis (Solana 1999: 114). The bombing campaign was intended to stop Belgrade s repression of Kosovo s Albanian population and to oblige the Milosevic regime to accept NATO s demands regarding the future political status of Kosovo (Wippman 2001: 129). NATO s decision to intervene in Kosovo without the authorization of the Security Council raised doubts in the international arena among human rights activists about the legitimacy of the operation. This essay will argue that NATO s intervention in Kosovo was legitimate because it was both legal and just. In so doing, this essay will start by carefully reading the U.N. Charter provisions that permit the use of force on limited grounds in order to set the legal conditions for intervention (Mertus 2000: 1751). NATO s legitimacy in Kosovo will be scrutinized focusing on the emerging body of international law, which permits intervention for humanitarian purposes. Likewise, a just war analysis will be applied to examine the morality of the decision to wage war, and the morality of the means and methods by which the war was conducted (Schroeder 2004: 180). The essay will eventually conclude that humanitarian intervention is now legal and widely accepted by most states ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

In the early ?70s, a Jamaican d.j. known as Kool Herc moved from Kingston to NY?s West Bronx. He attempted to incorporate his Jamaican style of dj, which involved reciting improvised rhymes over the dub versions of his reggae records. Unfortunately New Yorkers were not into reggae at this time. Because of this, he adapted his style by chanting over instrumental percussion sections of the day?s popular songs. Since these breaks were relatively short, he learned to extend them indefinitely by using an audio mixer and two identical records in which he continuously replaced the desires segment. In those early days, young partygoers initially recited popular phrases and used the slang of the day. This would usually evoke a response from the crowd, who began to call out their own names and slogans. As this culture evolved, the party shouts became more elaborate as the dj, in an effort to be different, began to incorporate little rhymes. It was not long before people began drawing upon outdated dozens and schoolyard rhymes. Many would add their own twist and customize these rhymes to make them suitable for the party environment (George, 1998). At that time it was not yet known as ?rap? but called emceeing. Thus, while they function as opposites, they are also intrinsically tied to each other. In the case of the Clown Prince of Crime, Batman s true nemesis, this Trickster like quality is relevant. The Joker is a particular kind of commentary on Batman, one that essentially derives from the characters antithetical logics (order vs chaos). The Joker is not only a counter to Batman, but a satirical figure in which a subversive attitude towards contemporary society is realized. In this role, the Joker figure s origin and history is clearly referenced. The Jokers a fool, prankster, jester, trickster, clown; the derivations of the fool archetype are many, but joining them together is a sense of mischief and a ridicule of authority. Alder believed that biological and physiological factors provided probabilities for future growth but that, the self , with creative power as part of its inner nature, is the important intervening variable (Selgiman Reichenberg, 2010, p. 63). Behavior is purposeful and goal directed when using Adlerian theory. Adler s theory focuses on inferiority feelings, which he sees as a normal condition for all people and as a source of all human striving. Inferiority can be the wellspring of creativity. Alder believes this is what motivates us to strive for mastery, superiority, and completion. From an Adlerian perspective, human behavior is not determined solely by heredity and the environment. Instead, we have the capacity to interpret, influence, and create events. Alder asserts that what we were born with is not as important as what we choose to do with the abilities and limitations we possess. Proposition 2 Argumentative Analysis Proposition 2 explains that what someone does and how others view the actions one does in coordination with one another is closely tied to identities (Christiansen, 1999). Furthermore, Proposition 2 states that language, verbal or nonverbal, is an important influence on identities because one learns self awareness which then impacts how that person acts around others due to societal cues. For example, a child learns that a behavior is not acceptable due to language spoken to them through someone else s facial expressions, like a frown, or direct communication between the child and someone else. People learn how to act and how to set their goals in life by the experience of doing things that others will approve or disapprove of. 6. During the pre ww2 era and particularly in the 1930s Hitler focused a lot of his attention on the propaganda surrounding himself and the policies of his Nazi party. The church was also involved in opposing Nazi regimes. An organization called the confessing church was formed. Probably one of the most significant and blatant acts of opposition towards Nazism occurred during the latter stages of the war in July 1944 when a bomb plot executed by members of the German army took place. The intent was to kill Hitler and hopefully end his regime, however the plan failed and Hitler survived despite badly injuring his right arm. The plan was nicknamed the Stauffenberg bomb plot. Although the opposition instances mentioned caused the Nazis some concern, Goebbles and his Nazi propaganda machine managed to overcome them. They did this by taking control of the medial and cultural aspects of Germany to win over the German people. • 25. The Health Care System Of Ontario Introduction The health care system in Ontario has been subjected to a lot of criticism and investigation since its introduction midway through the twentieth century. In the past decade, there has been a significant increase in the demand of healthcare, due to increase in the population from immigration and also, an increase in the chronic diseases among the residents of Ontario, which in turn has affected the overall quality of the provision of healthcare. • 42. Self-Obsessive Nature Of The Millennial Generation Millennials are the most intriguing generation the country of the United States has ever seen. The previous generations never dealt with their own issues so they push it on to the younger generation to fix the issue. The ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
