Prize for her work and devotion to bettering the lives of suffering children. The 1976 Nobel Peace
Prize was jointly awarded to Betty Williams and her partner Mairead Corrigan in 1977 because the
Norwegian Nobel Committee decided that the 1976 prize had to be reserved for the following year

After the incident, Williams joined forces with the aunt of the three children, Mairead Corrigan, and
the two of them co founded Women for Peace. In 1977, Williams and Corrigan were awarded the
Nobel Peace Prize for their work to find a nonviolent resolution to the tensions between Catholics and
Protestants in Northern Ireland. Williams drew inspiration from Martin Luther King, Jr. and took
many of the same peaceful approaches that he did. Mrs. Williams states that nonviolence is the
